So. Gestern. Morgens hat es nat\u00fcrlich geregnet, wir hatten nichts anderes erwartet … Aber f\u00fcr die Gegend um den Vulkan war laut Wettervorhersage die Regenwahrscheinlichkeit nur 60%, also wollten wir zumindest einen Versuch wagen. Und da es, als wir losgefahren sind, gerade mal aufgeh\u00f6rt hat zu regnen, haben wir als erstes einen Halt bei den Rainbow Falls hier in Hilo gemacht. Ein sehr sch\u00f6ner Wasserfall – nach all dem Regen noch viel beeindruckender als normal, wurde uns gesagt.<\/p>\n

So. Yesterday. In the morning it rained of course, we had not expected anything different … But for the area around the volcano the probability of rain was only 60%, so we wanted to at least give it a try. And since it had actually stopped raining for a bit when we left, we first of all stopped at the Rainbow Falls here in Hilo. A very nice waterfall – and after all that rain much more impressive than usual, we were told.<\/p>\n

Und dann ging es Richtung Vulkan. Am Besucherzentrum hatten sie uns gesagt, dass man unterhalb des Vulkans im Lavafeld tats\u00e4chlich Lava flie\u00dfen sehen kann. Eine M\u00f6glichkeit, dahin zu kommen, ist, den Highway 130 zu nehmen, auf der Karte unten rechts.<\/p>\n

And then we went in the direction of the volcano. At the visitor center, they had told us that below the volcano in the lava fields you can actually see lava flowing. One possibility to get there it, to take the highway 130, on the map it is on the lower right.<\/p>\n

Auf den Karten wurde das als „anstrengend“ bezeichnet. Aber w\u00e4re ja nicht unsere erste Wanderung …<\/p>\n

On the maps that was called „strenuous“. But then that would not have been our first hike …<\/p>\n

Wir sind also bis zum Ende der Stra\u00dfe, haben die Wanderstiefel angezogen und sind los. Zun\u00e4chst geht man auf diesem Weg. ZWEI Stunden lang … !<\/p>\n

So we drove to the end of the road, put on our hiking boots and got going. First you walk on this gravel road. For TWO hours …!<\/p>\n

Am Anfang stehen noch ein paar H\u00e4user …<\/p>\n

At the beginning there are still a few houses …<\/p>\n

Dann gibt es nur noch Lava.<\/p>\n

Then there is only lava.<\/p>\n

Und jetzt ratet mal, was es au\u00dferdem gab???<\/p>\n

Ja, Sonnenschein! Wir hatten extremes Gl\u00fcck: Bis abends hat es nicht geregnet. Im Gegenteil, die Sonne hat geschienen! Und nat\u00fcrlich hatten wir das nun \u00fcberhaupt nicht erwartet und die Sonnencreme daher auch vergessen … Aber der Sonnenbrand ist nicht ganz so schlimm …<\/p>\n

Yes, sunshine! We were so very lucky: until evening it did not rain. Quite the contrary, the sun shone! And of course that was one thing that we had not expected at all, and thus we had forgotten the sunscreen … But the sunburn is not all that bad …<\/p>\n

Gl\u00fccklicherweise gab es im Lavafeld viel zu sehen. Peles Haare zum Beispiel im oberen Bild.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, there was lots to see in the lava field. Pele’s hair for example, in the picture above.<\/p>\n

Und tolle Farben mal wieder …<\/p>\n

And once again great colours …<\/p>\n

Trotzdem war es eine lange Wanderung …<\/p>\n

Still, it was a long way to walk …<\/p>\n

… sehr lang …<\/p>\n

… very long …<\/p>\n

Noch einmal zwei Stunden!<\/p>\n

Once again two hours!<\/p>\n

Aber die Lava-Formationen haben uns in Atem gehalten.<\/p>\n

But the lava formations kept us in awe.<\/p>\n

Dann kamen wir in die Gegend, wo ganz viel Dampf aus dem Boden austritt.<\/p>\n

Then we came to the region where lots of steam rises from the ground.<\/p>\n

Hier lief man auch schon hier und da durch w\u00e4rmere Luftmassen.<\/p>\n

Here you also walked through warmer air pockets here and there.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Und dann erblickten wir die erste gl\u00fchende Lava:<\/p>\n

And then for the first time we saw glowing lava:<\/p>\n

Beeindruckend! Und man muss genau hinsehen, denn prinzipiell sieht die Lava da nicht so viel anders aus als \u00fcberall sonst …<\/p>\n

Impressive! And you have to look closely, because in general the lava there does not look much different from everywhere else …<\/p>\n

Hier unten seht Ihr, wor\u00fcber ich gelaufen bin, ohne es zu merken – bis Torben mich zur\u00fcckgerufen hat.<\/p>\n

Aber wir haben dann schnell gelernt, wonach man sich richten muss: die silbrige Oberfl\u00e4che der neuen Lava, das Hitzeflimmern dar\u00fcber und vor allem das Knistern.<\/p>\n

But we soon learned how to orient ourselves: by the silvery cover of the new lava, the heat haze above and most of all by the crackling sound.<\/p>\n

Und dann haben wir eine Stunde lang der Lava zugesehen. Toll!<\/p>\n

And then we watched the lava for an hour. Great!<\/p>\n

\nEin toller Tag! Erst auf dem R\u00fcckweg hat es leicht angefangen zu nieseln, und da hatten wir das Gl\u00fcck, dass uns ein netter Herr in seinem Pick-up mitgenommen hat. Und auf der Heimfahrt hat es dann mal wieder … gesch\u00fcttet! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
