That is why we wanted to check out only a very small part of the country: Almost three weeks to get from Brisbane to Melbourne. That should be feasible! But there is so much to see … national parks are a priority, that is obvious. But we soon realized, you cannot visit them all, there is an endless number of them! The nice little towns we had not planned on, and the search for whatever gems was on our to-do list a very maybe option. Yes, but since Rubyvale was on the way, we looked for sapphires there – as reported here. And we so enjoyed that, that we steered towards the opals in Lightning Ridge. Well … and then there was the next spot so conveniently on the way … In the area of Inverell lots of sapphires are found as well, and there we spent a whole day fossicking.

As you can see, here things were done a bit differently: we got our equipment and a short demonstration, then we were on our own. A gentleman from Queensland was also fossicking, but apart from the three of us, there was just a load of birds and many, many flies. You shovel a bucket full of dirt, sieve it first for the big rocks, then the fine dust, before you get to do the washing. We started at nine thirty in the morning and spent the whole day with sun, sapphires and loads of dirt – oh, and flies, as I mentioned. In any case, at three thirty, when we stopped, we were dirty and dusty, from head to toe.

And it was, once again, great, great fun … we would have loved to stay for another day, but we don’t have that much time, unfortunately. In the evening we planned our route for the following days, and we even skipped Sidney. That city we will look at during a future visit to Australia, this time around we won’t manage, because we are focussing on nature rather than on cities. But, as mentioned above, those pretty little towns along the way, we enjoy looking at. Today we discovered Glen Innes, a very Scottish place.
