Unsere letzte Besichtigung, der Barbakan, war ja mal Teil der Befestigungsanlage um die Stadtmauer. Von der Stadtmauer stehen nur noch Teile. Es gab mal 47 T\u00fcrme, heute stehen noch drei.<\/p>\n

Our last sightseeing building, the Barbican, used to be part of the fortification around the city wall. Of that wall only parts remain. There used to be 47 towers, today only three of them are left.<\/p>\n

Und im Ticket zum Barbakan ist die Tour zwischen den drei T\u00fcrmen, die Stadtmauer entlang, mit enthalten. Also sind wir jetzt zum \u00f6stlichen der drei: dem Posamentiererturm.<\/p>\n

And the ticket for the visit to the Barbican includes the admittance for the tour of those three towers, along the town wall. So we next went to the easternmost of the three: the Pasamonikow Tower.<\/p>\n

Da gehts dann nach oben, \u00fcber eine h\u00fcbsche Wendeltreppe.<\/p>\n

There you climb up, via a nice flight of winding stairs.<\/p>\n

And as you can see they really allow access to everybody!<\/p>\n

We walked along the town wall between the towers.<\/p>\n

Und \u00fcber dem Florianstor gibt es hier im Turm einen kleinen Raum, der auch in einer Kirche sein k\u00f6nnte.<\/p>\n

And above the St. Florian’s Gate there is this little room in the tower, which could just as well be part of a church.<\/p>\n

Das Blau an der Decke leuchtet regelrecht.<\/p>\n

The blue on the ceiling has a veritable glow.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately there was no explanation to tell us what was transported with it.<\/p>\n

Wieder unten auf dem Boden hat uns Merkur begr\u00fc\u00dft. Er ist eine Kopie des Originals „Merkur als Argust\u00f6ter“ von Bertel Thorvaldsen.<\/p>\n

Back down on the ground Mercury greeted us. He is a copy of the original „Mercury about to Kill Argus“ by Bertel Thorvaldsen.<\/p>\n

Dieser Herr? Faun? hat uns von einer Hauswand aus angel\u00e4chelt …<\/p>\n

Ein St\u00fcck weiter haben wir dies gefunden: „Jan Matejko – 1838 – 1893 – der bedeutendste Vertreter polnischer geschichtlicher Malerei“.<\/p>\n

A bit further we found this: „Jan Matejko 1838 – 1893 the most eminent representative of Polish historical painting“.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hier gehen wir jetzt auf die St.-Barbara-Kirche zu. Aber die haben wir uns nicht genauer angesehen, sondern das Geb\u00e4ude links hier im Bild: Die Marienbasilika, oder Kirche der Himmelfahrt der seligen Jungfrau Maria.<\/p>\n

Here now we walk in the direction of the St. Barbara Church. But that is not the one we took a closer look at, but rather the building on the left of the picture: the St. Mary’s Basilica, Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven.<\/p>\n

Hier seht Ihr die wundersch\u00f6ne Decke – ist die nicht traumhaft?<\/p>\n

Here you see the beautiful ceiling – isn’t it gorgeous?<\/p>\n

Weiter oben haben wir Euch doch Jan Matejko gezeigt. Der hat diese wundersch\u00f6ne Decke bemalt – und auch viele der Wandgem\u00e4lde erstellt.<\/p>\n

Above we had shown you Jan Matejko. Well, he painted this wonderful ceiling – and also did many of the paintings on the walls.<\/p>\n

Und darunter gibt es den ber\u00fchmten Hochaltar von Veit Sto\u00df.<\/p>\n

And below is the famous high altar by Veit Sto\u00df.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\" \u00dcbrigens: jede Stunde ert\u00f6nt ein Trompetensignal vom h\u00f6heren der beiden Kircht\u00fcrme, das dann abrupt endet. Das erinnert an den ber\u00fchmten Trompeter, der 1241 in den Hals geschossen wurde, w\u00e4hrend er den Alarm blies, dass die Mongolen die Stadt attackierten. – Im \u00dcbrigen h\u00f6rt man das Trompetensignal nicht nur hier in Krakau sondern in ganz Polen, mittags \u00fcber den Sender Radio 1, und das schon seit 1927!<\/p>\n

By the way: every hour a trumpet signal is played from the higher of the two church towers, which then ends suddenly. That commemorates the famous\u00a0 century trumpeter who in 1241 was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm, announcing the Mongol attack on the city. – Incidentally this trumpet signal is not only heard in Krakow but in the whole of Poland, at noon via the Radio 1 station, and that since 1927!<\/p>\n

Zu den zwei T\u00fcrmen gibt es auch etwas zu erz\u00e4hlen: Angeblich wurden sie von zwei Br\u00fcdern erbaut. Der \u00e4ltere war zuerst fertig und hatte dann Sorge, dass sein Bruder den anderen Turm h\u00f6her bauen k\u00f6nnte. Also erstach er ihn kurzerhand. – Oder war es der j\u00fcngere, der den Bruder t\u00f6tete, als er merkte, das dessen Turm der sch\u00f6nere war?<\/p>\n

About the two towers there exists a story as well: Supposedly they were built by two brothers. The older of the two was finished first and then was worried that his brother might build a higher tower. So he simply stabbed him to death. – Or was it the younger one, who killed his brother, when he realized that the other one’s tower was more beautiful?<\/p>\n

The oldest of the five bells in the lower tower supposedly the strongman\u00a0 Stanis\u0142aw Cio\u0142ek carried all the way up without any help.<\/p>\n

Und jetzt ein erster Blick auf die Krakauer Tuchhallen, zentral auf dem Marktplatz.<\/p>\n

And now a first look at the Krakow Cloth Hall, central feature of the market place.<\/p>\n

Von den Seiten des Geb\u00e4udes kann man durch den langen Saal gehen, der links und rechts mit Gesch\u00e4ften ges\u00e4umt ist.<\/p>\n

From the sides of the building you can walk through the long gallery that is framed by shops left and right.<\/p>\n

Heute gibt es hier nat\u00fcrlich viele Souvenirs zu kaufen. Fr\u00fcher war dies ein Umschlagplatz f\u00fcr Seide und Gew\u00fcrze, und auch f\u00fcr Salz aus der Wieliczka Mine.<\/p>\n

Today of course you can buy all kinds of souvenirs here. But in the olden days, this was a bartering place for silk and spices, and also for salt from the Wieliczka mine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00dcber den Torb\u00f6gen sind die verschiedenen Wappen zu sehen, hier zum Beispiel von Warschau.<\/p>\n

Above the archways different crests are displayed, here for example the one of Warsaw.<\/p>\n

Ein wirklich sch\u00f6nes Geb\u00e4ude, das gl\u00fccklicherweise um 1870 restauriert wurde, w\u00e4hrend viele andere sch\u00f6ne H\u00e4user am Platz dem Verfall zum Opfer fielen. – Wenn es auch bei dieser Gelegenheit, wie schon etliche Male zuvor, wieder etwas umgebaut wurde.<\/p>\n

A really beautiful building that luckily got restored in the 1870s, while many other pretty houses around the square were left to ruin. – Even though it got once again changed a bit at this opportunity, as quite a few times before in the past already.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Dahinter erkennt man den Rathausturm. Das ist der einzige Teil des Rathauses aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, der noch steht. Und auch das nicht ganz gerade: 55 Zentimeter neigt sich der Tum, wegen eines starken Windes im Jahr 1703. – Das Gem\u00e4uer war davor schon durch etliche Br\u00e4nde geschw\u00e4cht und wurde durch einen massiven Vorbau an der westlichen Wand gest\u00fctzt … aber dann kam der Sturm!<\/p>\n

Behind you can see the town hall tower.That is the only part left standing of the town hall built in the 13th century. And it is not exactly standing straight: the tower leans by 55 centimeters, a result of a strong wind in the year 1703. – Before that already, the building had been weakened by several fires and was supported by a massive buttress on its west wall … but then the storm came raging!<\/p>\n

„Die erste schriftliche Erw\u00e4hnung des Rathauses stammt aus 1316. Der Turm und das Geb\u00e4ude wurden mehrfach umgebaut. Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Geb\u00e4ude von den \u00d6sterreichern abgerissen, und nur der Turm \u00fcberlebte. Das Modell zeigt den Zustand der Rathausgeb\u00e4ude zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts.“<\/p>\n

„The first written record of the town hall comes from 1316. The tower and the building were repeatedly rebuilt. At the beginning of the 19th century, the building was demolished by the Austrians and only the tower survived. The model shows the condition of the town hall buildings from the end of the 18th century.“\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

Ein paar Meter weiter ist diese Skulptur von Igor Mitoraj zu sehen, genannt „Eros Bendato“, was „Gebundender Eros“ bedeutet.<\/p>\n

A few meters furthere there is this sculpture by Igor Mitoraj, called „Eros Bendato“ meaning „Eros Bound“.<\/p>\n
