Tomorrow morning we will leave the Isle of Wight, so today is the last chance to look at a few more sights. Cold or no cold … <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir sind an die K\u00fcste gefahren – bei etwas besserem Wetter als gestern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We drove to the coast – the weather being a bit better than yesterday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir wollten uns diese Klamm ansehen, die \u00e4lteste Touristenattraktion auf der Insel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wanted to take a look at this ravine, the oldest tourist attraction on the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja, was sollen wir sagen? Es gab ein paar interessante Pflanzen …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, what shall we say? There were a few interesting plants … <\/p>\n\n\n\n

… und diesen spektakul\u00e4ren „Wasserfall“. Naja, immerhin war der Eintritt nicht furchtbar teuer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

… and this spectacular „waterfall“. Oh well, at least the entrance fee was not terribly expensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir sind dann weitergefahren, um uns Appuldurcombe House anzusehen. Immerhin kam die Sonne mal kurz raus!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then drove on to take a look at Appuldurcombe House. At least the sun did come out for a spell!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tja, dieses Haus. Gebaut im 18. Jahrhundert und Sitz der Worsley-Familie. Und ein Jahrhundert lang war es wohl das beste Haus auf der Insel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, this house. Built in the 18th century and seat of the Worsley family. And for one century, it seems it was the finest house on the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hier und da gibt es kleine sch\u00f6ne Details zu entdecken, wie hier. Doch das meiste ist eher unaufregend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here and there you can discover nice details like here. But for the most part the ruins are rather not so exciting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Geschichte von Sir Richard Worsley und seiner Frau Seymour Fleming ist auch nicht erhebend. Sie war ganze 17 als er sie geheiratet hat – aber sie war reich! Er hat ihr Geld durchgebracht, schlie\u00dflich war sie jetzt sein Eigentum … die Geschichte wird noch schlimmer, Ihr k\u00f6nnt sie gerne woanders nachlesen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of Sir Richard Worsley and his wife Seymour Fleming is also not really uplifting. She was barely 17 when he married her – but she was rich! He then proceeded to spend her money, after all now she was his property … and the story just gets worse from there, you are very welcome to read up on it somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noch ein Blick auf die sch\u00f6nste Seite der Ruine – die hier nicht wie eine aussieht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One last look at the nicest view of the ruins – which here do not look all that ruined. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fahren wir wieder an die K\u00fcste – jetzt etwas s\u00fcdlicher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s drive to the coast again – a bit further South this time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wie man sieht, hat sich das mit der Sonne schon wieder erledigt. Und es ist windig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can see, that spell of sunshine is gone for good. And it is getting windy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doch wir trotzen dem Wind, um uns St. Catherine’s Oratory anzusehen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we brave the wind, to take a look at St. Catherine’s Oratory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nein, das ist keine Rakete. Im Volksmund nennt man dieses T\u00fcrmchen die Pfefferm\u00fchle. Der Sage nach musste der Lord of Chale, der Wein aus einem Wrack gestohlen hatte, zur Strafe hier eine kleine Kapelle mit Leuchtturm bauen. – Und das ist alles, was noch \u00fcbrig ist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, this is not a rocket. The popular name for this little tower is the pepperpot. According to legend, the Lord of Chale, who had stolen wine from a shipwreck, as penance had to build a small chapel with a beacon here. – And this is all that is left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und jetzt, bevor der n\u00e4chste Regen kommt: nochmal zum Carisbrooke Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, before the next rain gets started: once more to Carisbrooke Castle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dieses Mal sind wir alle Mauern abgelaufen. – Und das sind eine Menge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time we walked along all the walls. – And there are quite a few!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auf diese Weise kriegt man einen guten Eindruck davon, wie die ganze Anlage aufgebaut war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This way you get a good impression of how the whole compound was set up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hier die Motte, der letzte R\u00fcckzugsort. Da oben steht auch der alte Regenwasser-Brunnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ihr wisst ja schon, dass Beatrice hier gelebt hat. Doch lange davor residierte hier Countess Isabella de Fortibus, ab 1262. Und das war „ihr“ Fenster, mit buntem Glas geschm\u00fcckt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do know already that Beatrice lived here. But long before that, Countess Isabella de Fortibus resided here, starting in 1262. And this here was „her“ window, decorated with coloured glass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man sagt, dass sie gerne hier sa\u00df – ungef\u00e4hr so, nehme ich an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is said that she liked to sit here – just like this, I am sure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und noch ein ber\u00fchmtes Fenster. Ihr erinnert Euch an die paar Tage, die Charles I. auf Hurst Castle eingesperrt war? Davor war er hier gefangen. Er hat mehrere Ausbruchsversuche unternommen – zum Beispiel durch die St\u00e4be dieses Fensters. Nur blieb er auf halbem Wege stecken … <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And another famous window. You remember the short incarceration of Charles I on Hurst Castle? Before that he was prisoner here. He tried to escape several times – once for example through the bars of this window. Unfortunately he got stuck halfway through … <\/p>\n\n\n\n
