Also, egal, wie das Wetter aussieht &#8230; wir fahren los.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, our last full day here &#8230; and on our list we have one more location that we wanted to see for sure. Jahrhundert, eine Festungsstadt aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, und als erstes hatten wir ja ein Artilleriewerk aus dem 2. Weltkrieg. Jetzt geht es also um den Ersten Weltkrieg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last few days we have roamed through quite a bit of history already: Castles from the 11th and 13th century, a fortified town from the 17th century, and right at the start we had been at that fortress from the Second World War. Das war einer der Punkte, der hart umk\u00e4mpft war und w\u00e4hrend des Krieges 8 mal den Besitzer wechselte. Die Soldaten beider Seiten nannten den Berg den Menschenfresser (die franz\u00f6sichen Soldaten sagten &#8222;la mangeuse d&#8217;hommes&#8220;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are on the Hartmannswillerkopf. That was one of those spots where the fighting was very severe, and during the war it changed hands eight times. Im Museum hatte eine nette junge Frau uns auf deutsch erkl\u00e4rt, dass es am meisten Sinn mache, erst den kurzen Einf\u00fchrungsfilm zu sehen, dann die Krypta zu besuchen und anschlie\u00dfend den Berg zu erkunden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As earlier already, at the ticket office in the museum, here as well, we are made welcome in a very friendly way. In the museum a nice young lady explained to us in German that it makes most sense to first watch the short introductory movie, to then visit the crypt and then finally to explore the mountain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hier in der Krypta war jetzt ein \u00e4u\u00dferst freundlicher Herr bereit, uns jede Frage &#8211; zum Beispiel zu den Wandtafeln &#8211; zu beantworten. Und es war spannend, zu h\u00f6ren, was dieser schlaue Mann uns alles an Hintergrundinfo erz\u00e4hlen konnte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now here in the crypt an extremely friendly gentleman was willing to answer whatever questions we had &#8211; regarding the wall panels. Hier sind drei Alt\u00e4re aufgebaut: ein j\u00fcdischer, ein evangelischer, ein katholischer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we walk the steps all the way down to 17 meters. Der wurde zwischen 1921 und 1926 angelegt, und hier liegen 1256 namentlich bekannte Tote in Einzelgr\u00e4bern, 384 unbekannte Soldaten in 6 Massengr\u00e4bern begraben. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way further to the mountain itself you now come to the large cemetery. That was erected between 1921 and 1926, and here there are 1256 identified dead bodies buried in individual graves, and 384 unknown soldiers in 6 mass graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/11.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/11-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cirsche.com\/Travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/11-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Soldaten aus dem Elsass gab es hier \u00fcbrigens nur sehr, sehr wenige. Sie galten als politisch unsicher und wurden von der deutschen Reichswehr daher eher an anderen Fronten eingesetzt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, there were only very, very few Alsatian soldiers here. Es gibt einen Rundweg, der von 45 Informationstafeln begleitet wird. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, and now we come to the battlefield itself. Seit dem 11. November 2018 haben sich die von den Soldaten errichteten Befestigungen und die Spuren der vier Kriegsjahre im Laufe der Zeit unvermeidlich ver\u00e4ndert und der Wald trat wieder an die Stelle der verw\u00fcsteten Mondlandschaft.&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first one set the mood: &#8222;You are going to walk through this major commemorative and historical site in conditions which are similar to those experienced by soldiers fighting in the Great War.
