So, heute besuchen wir die n\u00e4chste Insel. Wir werden in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, anlegen, welches den Niederlanden untersteht. Etwas mehr als die H\u00e4lfte der Insel geh\u00f6rt zu Frankreich, das ist dann Saint Martin mit der Hauptstadt Marigot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, today we visit the next island. We will dock in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, which is under the reign of the Netherlands. A bit more than half of the island belongs to France, that is then Saint Martin with the capital Marigot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ausnahmsweise d\u00fcrfen wir heute auf eigene Faust losziehen. Gut, dass wir keine Ausfl\u00fcge gebucht haben. \u2013 Morgens haben wir schon mitgekriegt, dass ein weiterer Kreuzfahrer kurz nach uns ankam. Aber jetzt stellen wir fest, da gibts noch mehr! (Sp\u00e4ter haben wir gesehen, dass hinter dem ganz linken Riesen noch einer lag, also insgesamt 5!!!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today for a change, we are allowed to set off on our own. Good thing that we had not booked any excursions. \u2013 In the morning we had already noticed that another cruise ship had arrived shortly after us. But now we realize, there are even more! (Later we did see that behind the one giant on the far left, there was one more, so all in all it was 5!!!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir nehmen auf jeden Fall das Wassertaxi r\u00fcber nach Philipsburg. Mit unseren Armb\u00e4ndchen k\u00f6nnten wir den ganzen Tag hin und her fahren …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, we take the water taxi across to Philipsburg. With our paper bracelets we could ride them back and forth all day \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein Pelikan zieht \u00fcber uns hin, w\u00e4hrend wir auf dem Wasser sind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pelican flies above us, while we are on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und dann sind wir auch schon da:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then we are there already:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir haben nat\u00fcrlich Wasser dabei \u2013 in der Karibik soll man ja immer viel Fl\u00fcssigkeit zu sich nehmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course we brought some water \u2013 in the Caribbean you are supposed to always take in lots of fluids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zuerst sind wir die Strandpromenade und die Parallelstra\u00dfe erkunden gegangen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First we went exploring the boardwalk and the street parallel to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zu Fu\u00df, der hier f\u00e4hrt nicht mehr so gut …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On foot, this guy here does not run all that well anymore \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zielstrebig zum Gerichtsgeb\u00e4ude. Das stammt aus dem Jahre 1825 und ist ganz aus Holz gebaut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Directly to the court house. That dates back to the year 1825 and is built entirely of wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und was wollen wir uns jetzt sonst noch so ansehen? Urspr\u00fcnglich hatten wir einen Mietwagen gebucht, um auf eigene Faust die Insel zu erforschen. Doch dann hie\u00df es, es sind nirgends individuelle Landg\u00e4nge erlaubt, also haben wir den Wagen wieder abbestellt … und wie wir hier ankommen, hat AIDA beschlossen, dass wir jetzt doch ohne Aufsicht an Land d\u00fcrfen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what else do we want to look at here? Originally we had booked a rental car, to explore the island on our own. But then we were told, no individual shore leaves are allowed anywhere, so we cancelled the rental car after all \u2026 and then when we get here, AIDA has decided that now after all, we are allowed to go ashore without supervision!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renate und Miri wollten den Strand und die Promenade noch ein wenig genie\u00dfen, Dietmar, Torben und ich wussten: Jetzt, wo die AIDA-Ketten gesprengt sind, wollen wir etwas mehr von der Insel sehen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renate and Miri wanted to enjoy the beach and the boardwalk for a bit longer, while Dietmar, Torben and I knew: Now that the chains of AIDA are broken, we want to see a bit more of the island!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir h\u00e4tten uns gerne ein \u201enormales\u201c Taxi genommen und dem Fahrer exakt gesagt, wo wir hin wollen. Aber das war nicht zu schaffen. Alle bieten Touren an. Okay, dann versuchen wir es mal mit Nicholas. Der hat uns versichert, dass er uns \u00fcbergl\u00fccklich machen wird … hm. Wir sind los und ziemlich bald auf die franz\u00f6sische Seite r\u00fcber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would have liked to take a \u201cnormal\u201d cab and to tell the driver exactly where we want to go. But that was just not to be. All of them offer tours. Okay, so we will give it a try with Nicholas. He assured us that he would make us immensely happy \u2026 hm. We then got going and pretty soon crossed to the French side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hier leben auf jeden Fall Leute mit viel Geld. Laut Nicholas kommt man mal auf die Insel, mietet eine Villa f\u00fcr einen Monat und zieht dann wieder weiter …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing is for sure, people with a lot of money live her. According to Nicholas you sometimes come to the island, rent a villa for a month and then move on \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und dann waren wir an einem noblen Strand \u2013 Nicholas dachte, da w\u00e4ren wir jetzt gl\u00fccklich ohne Ende und w\u00fcrden uns mit Drinks an eine Bar setzen. Tja, oben am Hang, da wollte ich, dass er anh\u00e4lt, der Blick \u00fcber die K\u00fcste w\u00e4re ein tolles Foto gewesen. \u2013 Aber Nicholas wei\u00df besser, was wir wollen ☹<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then we reached a posh beach \u2013 Nicholas thought, that would make us happy to no end and we would love to sit at the bar with some drinks. Well, up on the hill, there I would have liked him to stop, the view across the coast would have been a great photo. \u2013 But Nicholas knows so much better what we want ☹<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weiter gings. Fotostopp bei Grand Case. (Wir sind an einem H\u00fcgel vorbei, auf dem ein Fort steht, das w\u00e4re interessant gewesen, aber Nicholas hat uns belehrt: Da steht kein Fort!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On we went. A photo stop in the area of Grand Case. (We had passed a hill atop of which we saw a fort \u2013 that would have been interesting, but Nicholas instructed us: There is no fort!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aber am n\u00e4chsten Stopp gab es tats\u00e4chlich ein Fort, und wir durften auch hochlaufen. (Nicholas hat uns gesagt, da kann man nicht hochfahren. Also waren die Stra\u00dfe und Parkpl\u00e4tze, die wir gesehen haben, genau so eine Fata Morgana wie das erste Fort. Unsere Augen spielen uns Streiche …!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at the next stop there actually was a fort, and we were even allowed to walk up to it. (Nicholas told us, you cannot drive up there. So that means the road and the parking lot that we saw, were a Fata Morgana just like the first fort had been. Our eyes are playing tricks on us \u2026!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, you have a great view from up here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viel steht leider nicht mehr \u2013 und es gab auch keine Infotafeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately there is not much left standing \u2013 and there were no info tablets either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir sind dann weitergefahren, und dieses Bild l\u00e4sst schon mal erahnen, was als n\u00e4chstes ansteht: ein Strand n\u00e4mlich!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then drove on, and this painting shall give you an inkling of what is next on our list: because it is a beach!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aber nicht irgendein Strand, nein, der Maho-Strand. Das ist der, der direkt vor dem Flughafen liegt …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not just any old beach, no, the Maho beach. That is the one that is situated right in front of the airport \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es ist schon verr\u00fcckt. Der ganze Strand ist voller Leute mit Kameras und Handys in den H\u00e4nden … nur wegen der Flugzeuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is strange, no question. The whole beach is crowded with people who have cameras and cell phones in their hands \u2026 all just because of the airplanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir haben eine Menge Flieger gesehen \u2013 leider keine gro\u00dfe Boeing oder so … eher kleine Cessnas und schnittige Privatjets. Aber es war trotzdem toll!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We saw quite a few aeroplanes \u2013 unfortunately no large Boeing or any of that kind \u2026 rather the small Cessnas and racy private jets. But it was exciting nonetheless!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wir sind dann weiter zum letzten Stopp: Ein kleiner H\u00fcgel mit Flagge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then went on to the next stop: A small hill with a flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leute, die uns entgegen kamen, meinten: da gibts nichts zu sehen! Aber ganz so ist es dann doch nicht …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who came down the hill, told us: there is nothing to see up there! But that is not quite true \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kein malerischer leerer Sandstrand mit Klippen sondern durchaus eine K\u00fcste, an der eine Menge los ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No picturesque empty sandy beach with some cliffs, but rather a coast where a lot is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein bisschen weiter nach rechts liegen dann Unmengen von Booten. Was man gut sehen w\u00fcrde, wenn sich da nicht wieder drei Touristen in den Weg gestellt h\u00e4tten …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bit farther to the right then, there are endless numbers of boats moored. Which you would be able to see very well, had not three tourists once again gotten in the way \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja, das wars dann schon wieder. Abflug zur\u00fcck zum Schiff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, and that was it. Take-off back to the ship!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wobei es eine Weile gedauert hat, bis wir dort waren. \u2013 AIDA war da, samt allen Arten von Touristengruppen auf Ausflug. (ganz ehrlich: dass uns die Leute auf den Inseln immer so freundlich begegnen: WARUM? Wenn ich hier leben w\u00fcrde …)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, it took a while until we were there. \u2013 AIDA was in town, including all kinds of tourist groups on excursions. (in all honesty: that the inhabitants of the islands always treat us with nothing but friendliness: WHY? If I lived here \u2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
