Ab ans Meer … Heute fahren wir zur\u00fcck nach Houston, unseren Ausgangspunkt. Und auf dem Weg dachten wir …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off to the ocean … Today we will drive back to Houston, our starting point. And on the way, we thought \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026 wir sehen uns noch schnell die USS Lexington an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

… we take a quick look at the USS Lexington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Spitzname des Flugzeugtr\u00e4gers ist \u201eblauer Geist\u201c: Die USS Lexington hatte nie die \u00fcbliche Tarnfarbe erhalten. Stattdessen ist sie grau, was aus der Ferne blau erscheint. Mehrfach hatten die Japaner im 2. Weltkrieg berichtet, dass sie gesunken sei, aber immer tauchte das Schiff wieder auf … Wir hatten es vorgestern vom Highway aus gesehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nickname of the aircraft carrier is \u201cBlue Ghost\u201d: The USS Lexington never got the usual camouflage colours. Instead the ship was painted grey, which from afar looks blue. Several times the Japanese during World War II reported that it had been sunk, but it always showed up again \u2026 We had spotted the ship from the highway, day before yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na, die Poster aus dem Krieg haben sehr klar gemacht, dass auch Frauen gebraucht werden!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1942 bis 1991 war die USS Lexington im Einsatz. Dies sind die letzen beiden Flaggen, die auf dem Schiff aufgezogen wurden: \u201eN\u201c und \u201eC\u201c, zusammen ist das ein Notsignal, welches gezeigt wurde, weil der blaue Geist \u201eunterwegs war, im Schlepp und ohne Antrieb\u201c, auf dem Weg nach Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1942 until 1991 the USS Lexington was in use. These are the last two flags that the ship flew: \u201cN\u201d and \u201cC\u201d, combined they are a distress signal, which was flown because the Blue Ghost \u201cunderway, under tow and without power\u201d, on its way to Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ha! We did NOT think \u2026 There was so much to see, we spent more than three hours on the ship!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alleine bis wir all die Flugzeuge gesehen hatten!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even just the time it took to look at the planes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und dann ging es rein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es gab so viel zu sehen: Die Br\u00fccke zum Beispiel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was so much to see: The bridge for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dann wieder ein Blick nach drau\u00dfen …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then again a look outside \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026 und dann die \u00dcberraschung des Tages! Hier gibt es:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Piloten h\u00e4tten nach einem Umbau des Schiffes sonst in voller Montur drei Leitern hochklettern m\u00fcssen, um zu den Fliegern zu kommen. Also wurde die Rolltreppe eingebaut, in den fr\u00fchen 1950ern. Auch interessant: Die USS Lexington war das erste Schiff in der Geschichte der U.S.-Marine, auf dem es Frauen als Teil der Besatzung gab (18. August 1980).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a remodeling of the ship, the pilots would have had to climb three ladders wearing full gear, to reach the planes. Thus the escalator was installed, in the early 1950s. Also interesting: The USS Lexington was the first ship in U.S. naval history to have women stationed aboard as crew members (18 August 1980).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We first went along the coast, through Edna for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dann nach Schulenburg, wo wir uns eine \u201ebemalte Kirche\u201c ansehen wollten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then to Schulenburg, where we wanted to see a \u201cpainted church\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deutsche und andere Immigranten, die im 19. Jahrhundert nach Texas kamen, bemalten ihre Kirchen innen. \u2013 Doch leider war die Kirche geschlossen, also konnten wir nur durch das T\u00fcrfenster sehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
