Guten Morgen! Gestern war ein langer Tag, deswegen kommt der Eintrag dazu erst jetzt. Wir waren nämlich in Sigatoka, 1,5 Stunden von hier. Wir sind extra früh aufgestanden, damit wir nicht gleich in die Mittagshitze kommen, und es hat sich gelohnt. Wir sind zuerst zu den Sanddünen gefahren, Fidjis ältester Nationalpark. Dort haben wir uns gegen die einstündige und für die zweistündige Wanderung entschieden (wir waren natürlich vier unterwegs …).
Good morning! Yesterday was a long day, which is why we deliver the entry to go with it only now. For we went to Sigatoka, 1.5 hours from here. We even got up early, so that we don’t get there right in the midday heat, and it was worth it. First we drove to the Sand Dunes, Fiji’s oldest national park. There we decided against the one hour walk and did the two hour one (and of course it took us four …).
Der Weg war unheimlich abwechslungsreich. Erst durch Grasland mit Büschen hier und da. Und ganz schnell wurde es furchtbar laut!
The walk was very varied. First through grassland, with a few bushes here and there. And very quickly, it became terribly noisy!
Seht Ihr die ganzen schwarzen Punkte in den Bäumen? Das sind alles Flughunde. Und die machen ein Gezeter! Unglaublich … Aber wir haben sie bald hinter uns gelassen und sind in den finsteren Wald eingetaucht. Die Menschen im nahen Dorf haben früher geglaubt, er sei ein Tor in die Geisterwelt.
Can you see all the black spots in the trees? Those are lots of flying foxes. And they make such a rumpus! Unbelievable … But we soon left them behind and entered the dark forest. The people in the nearby village used to believe that it was a gateway to the spirit world.

Und da uns klar ist, dass die Einträge etwas spinnenlastig sind, haben wir alle Schmetterlinge auf dem Weg fotografiert: (wir wollen ja nicht für Spinnen-Albträume verantwortlich sein)
And since we are aware that these blog entries are a bit heavy on spiders, we took photos of all the butterflies along the way: (we don’t want to be responsible for spidery nightmares)
Jetzt hatten wir den Wald schon hinter uns, und den ersten Blick auf die tatsächlichen Dünen:
We had already left the forest by now, and caught the first glimpse of the actual dunes:
Jede Menge Heuschrecken sind auf dem Weg vor uns herumgesprungen und -geflogen.
Loads of grasshoppers jumped around on the path ahead of us, or flew off.
Und auf einmal öffnet sich rechts von uns der Blick aufs Meer:
And all of a sudden, to our right, we catch sight of the ocean:
Da sollten wir jetzt hin, also ab über den Sand. Das war doch recht anstrengend in der Hitze (um die 30°C), und die Wanderstiefel haben sich mit Sand gefüllt.
That was where we were supposed to go now, so off across the sand it was. And it was quite exhausting in the heat (around 30°C), and the hiking boots filled with sand.

Die bedecken die Dünen teilweise wie Teppiche.
They cover the dunes like carpets in places.
Ja, und dann waren wir unten am Strand. Schöne Wellen, denen man lange zugucken konnte …
Yes, and then we had reached the beach. Beautiful waves that you could watch for ages …
Wie erwähnt, es war heiß, und feucht, und anstrengend … also hatten wir uns unvorsichtigerweise Regen gewünscht. Hier ist er noch ein Stück weg … aber es hat uns voll erwischt. In Sekunden waren wir durchnässt. Aber lange hat der Schauer nicht gehalten, und nach dem Auswringen der T-Shirts und Shorts sind sie auch recht schnell wieder getrocknet.
As I mentioned, it was hot, and humid, and exhausting … so we carelessly wished for rain. Here it is still a bit further off … but then it hit us full blast. Within seconds we were soaked. But the shower did not last long, and after we had wrung out our t-shirts and shorts, they did dry rather quickly.
Ja, und dann haben wir den Punkt erreicht, wo es wieder den Hang hoch ging. Da wurde es wieder grün. Wie ein Park sah das aus. Sehr schön, und vor allem ein wenig kühler. Wenn nur die Mücken nicht gewesen wären! Die haben uns – trotz Mückenspray – gestern fleißig verspeist!
Yes, and then we reached the spot where the path went back up the hill. Here it was nice and green again. It looked like a park. Very pretty, and most importantly, a bit cooler. If only the mosquitoes would not have been so numerous! Yesterday they busily ate us up – notwithstanding the mosquito repellent we had used!
Als nächstes kam der Mahagoni-Wald, und da sind wir dann relativ nah an den Flughunden vorbei gegangen.
The next section was the mahogany forest, and there we came relatively close to the flying foxes.
Wir haben uns richtig in den Wald verliebt, so schön war es da. – Und da sind wir nicht die einzigen!
We really fell in love with that forest, it was so pretty there. – And we were not alone with that feeling!
Aber auch die schönste Wanderung ist mal vorbei. Zurück am Auto haben wir uns aus den sandigen Stiefeln geschält, schnell was getrunken, und weiter gings: Zum Tavuni Hill Fort. Da haben wir zuallererst einen tollen Baum entdeckt, den die Vögel lieben:
But even the most beautiful hike has to have an end sometime. Back at the car we got out of our sandy boots, drank something, and off we went again: to the Tavuni Hill Fort. Here we first of all discovered a great tree that the birds just love:

Und wir haben den Blick über den Sigatoka Fluss genossen. Das ist der größte Fluss auf der Insel.
And we enjoyed the view across the Sigatoka river. That is the greatest river on the island.
Vom Fort, das hier mal war, ist recht wenig zu sehen. Oben seht Ihr Gräber.
Of the fort that used to be here, there is not all that much to see. Above you see graves.
Und das ist ein Erdofen: Erst wird ein flaches Loch gegraben und dort ein Feuer entfacht. Über die glühenden Kohlen werden Steine drapiert, darauf wird das Essen platziert. Und das wird mit Blättern und Zweigen, und schließlich einer Schicht Erde abgedeckt. Dann einfach abwarten …
And this is an Earth oven: First a shallow hole is dug, and a fire lit inside it. Over the burning embers, stones are placed, and on top of these the food is put. And that is then covered again, with leaves and twigs, and finally a layer of soil. Then you only need to wait …
Das war ein langer Tag! Um acht Uhr morgens sind wir los, abends um sechs waren wir wieder hier – und ziemlich kaputt!
That was a long day! At eight in the morning we left, and around six in the evening we were back – and quite worn out!
