Man sieht ihn – man sieht ihn nicht / Now you see it – now you don’t

So. Der Aufenthalt in Volcano war gedacht, um nah beim Vulkan zu sein, aber das hat ja, wegen des Regens, nichts gebracht. Vom Vulkan hatten wir bisher nichts gesehen. Und gestern war dann Abfahrt, zu unserer nächsten Unterkunft in Hilo. Morgens hat es ein paar Male nur genieselt, wir hatten Hoffnung, dass es doch mal zu regnen aufhört … aber nein. Also haben wir das Auto gepackt und sind los. Jetzt wollten wir aber wenigstens beim Besucherzentrum beim Vulkan vorbeifahren, um zu sehen, was uns denn alles entgeht … Es hat natürlich geregnet, aber wir kamen gerade richtig für eine Filmvorführung. Ein alter, aber sehr gut gemachter Film, über Ausbrüche 1959 und 1960.

So. The stay in Volcano was planned so that we could be close to the volcano, but, because of all the rain, that had not worked out at all. So far we had not seen anything of the volcano. And yesterday we had to leave, to drive to our next lodgings, in Hilo. In the morning, a few times it only drizzled, we did have some hope that it might stop raining for a bit … but no. So we packed our stuff into the car and left. But now we wanted to at least stop at the visitor center near the volcano, to see what we had missed out on … Of course it was raining, but we were right on time for a movie presentation. An old, but very well made film, about eruptions in 1959 and 1960.

Dann sind wir zum Jagger Museum gefahren, das ist ganz nah beim Krater. Dort haben wir erfahren, dass Pele die Göttin der Vulkane ist:

Then we drove to the Jagger Museum, that is quite close to the crater. There we learned that Pele is the goddess of volcanoes:

Im Museum waren die verschiedenen Lava-Sorten ausgestellt, und auch Peles Haare 😉

Aber interessanter war natürlich der Krater selber. Hier seht Ihr den:

But more interesting was the crater itself. Here you can see it:

Es hätte noch viel mehr zu sehen gegeben. Aber es hat – natürlich – geregnet. Und außerdem sind unsere Wanderstiefel nach wie vor durchnässt. Wir haben Blatt für Blatt schon eine ganze Zeitung in die Schuhe gestopft … – Also sind wir nach Hilo. (da hat es auch geregnet, welch Überraschung!) Aber abends wollten wir zurück zum Krater. Tja, schon auf der Fahrt war das Wetter wieder nicht vielversprechend:

We already stuffed a whole newspaper into the shoes, bit by bit … – So we went to Hilo. (where it rained, what a surprise!) But in the evening we wanted to go back to the crater.
