(gestern waren wir in einem etwas dürftig eingerichteten Hotel, da gabs leider kein Internet, daher ist der Eintrag einen Tag zu spät … / yesterday we were in a very basically furnished hotel, they did not have any WiFi, that is why the entry is a day too late …)
Heute haben wir uns Opalen gewidmet. Kurz hinter Lightning Ridge gibt es die „Big Opal“ Mine. Wir waren kurz vor neun (wenn die aufmachen – sollten …) da, aber weit und breit niemand. Kurz nach neun, immer noch niemand. Wir haben die Nummer angerufen, die da an der Wand stand .. und im Gebäude hats geklingelt. Na gut, dann fahren wir halt zu der Mine, die man am anderen Ende von Lightning Ridge besuchen kann. Und das war die beste Entscheidung! Gut, dass die bei der anderen Mine nicht da waren … Bei der Opal Adventure Mine hat Brad uns mit Handschlag begrüßt, dann durften wir nach einer kurzen Einweisung und mit Bauhelmen versehen die Mine erkunden. Danach durften wir uns im Unterstand neben dem Hauptgebäude einen gratis Tee und Kaffee machen, Bücher lesen und das schöne Wetter genießen (morgens 28°C, mittags 37°C im Schatten), uns den Verkaufsraum ansehen …
Today’s topic was opals. Right after Lightning Ridge there is the “Big Opal Mine”. We were there just before nine (when they open – supposedly …), but nobody to be seen anywhere. Shortly after nine, still nobody. We called the number given there on the wall … and inside the building the phone rang. Okay, so let’s drive to the walk-in mine at the other end of Lightning Ridge. And that was just the best decision ever! Good thing that nobody was around at the other mine … At the Opal Adventure Mine Brad shook our hands in welcome, then after a short briefing and armed with hardhats we got to explore the mine. After that we made ourselves some tea and coffee in the lean-to next to the main building, free of charge, we got to read books provided and enjoy the nice weather (in the morning 28°C, around noon 37°C in the shade), took a look at the sales room …
Und dann gings ans Opale suchen. Draußen waren Haufen von trockenem Lehm voller Steine, da haben wir nach Opalen gefahndet. Und eine ganze Menge gefunden!! Schön wars, ganz ruhig, nur Vogelgesang und wir zwei auf diesem Steinhaufen … in der S-O-N-N-E.
And then we were off to search for opals. Outside there was a heap of dry clay full of rocks, where we looked for opals. And we found quite a few!! It was very nice, all quiet, just birdsong and the two of us on this pile of rocks … in the S-U-N.
