Um den Wasserturm herum gibt es einen kleinen Park mit tollen Laternen, vielen Blumen und Wasserspielen.
All around the Water Tower there is a little park with gorgeous lanterns, many flowers and water fountains.
1886 wurde der Bau des Wasserturms begonnen. Der Architekt war Gustav Halmhuber. Und der Turm ist 60,33m hoch und fasst 2000m³.
1886 the erection of the Water Tower was started. The architect was Gustav Halmhuber. And the tower is 60,33m high and holds 2000m³.
Ein paar Schritte weiter steht der „Rosengarten“, ein Kongresszentrum.
A few steps further the „Rosengarten“ is located, a convention centre.
Errichtet wurde das Gebäude von 1900 bis 1903 nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Bruno Schmitz.

Dahinter gab es einst den Nibelungensaal, der 6000 Plätze bot und damit damals zu den größten Sälen in ganz Deutschland gehörte.
Behind this there used to be the Nibelungen Hall, which offered 6000 seats and because of that used to be one of the largest halls in all of Germany.
In den 70er Jahren wurde hinter dem Vorbau ein Neubau errichtet mit dem Mozartsaal, der immerhin noch 2300 Plätze bietet.
In the seventies behind the front a new construction was added, with the Mozart Hall, which still offers 2300 seats.
Wir sind als nächstes am Gebäude vorbeigegangen … der Neubau war nicht so unser Ding, da hab ich keine Fotos geschossen. Wir sind dann einfach mal die Straßen entlang gelaufen und haben so viele interessante Fassaden entdeckt.
We next walked past the building … the new construction was not really to our taste, I did not take any pictures. We then simply walked along the streets and discovered so many interesting facades.
Spannend war, dass man alle möglichen Epochen entdeckt. Da stehen wild durcheinander hier ein Fachwerkhaus, dort eins aus den 20er Jahren, da drüben ein wilder Versuch aus den 60ern … Aber dazu haben wir später noch ein paar Bilder.
It was fascinating that you can discover all kinds of epochs. All mixed up you find here a half-timbered house, there one built in the twenties, over there a wild attempt from the sixties … But regarding that we have some more pictures later on.
Bei vielen Straßenschildern gab es Zusatzinformationen, das fanden wir sehr schön. Normalerweise hat man ja oft keine Ahnung, wer oder was hinter dem Straßennamen steckt.
At many street signs there is additional information given, we thought that is very nice. After all, normally one often has no idea who or what the street name refers to.

Was uns überrascht hat: Es gibt sehr viel Grün in Mannheim. Gerade im Stadtzentrum, wo wir ja unterwegs waren, gibt es viele Bäume …
Something that surprised us: There is a lot of green in Mannheim. Especially in the city centre where we were, there are lots of trees …

Wir sind da unterwegs und hören plötzlich unheimlich viel und auch recht lautes Gezwitscher. Da!
We are just ambling about and suddenly hear a lot and very loud tweeting. There!
Wenn ich es nicht anders wüsste … das erinnert mich an Barcelona – aber wir sind hier im deutlich kälteren Mannheim! Also, mal sehen, was die Vogelstimmen-App sagt.

Tatsache, hier leben Halsbandsittiche! Leider wollten sie sich nicht wirklich fotografieren lassen … aber einmal haben wir einen kurz erwischt.
And it’s true, ring-necked parakeet live here! Unfortunately they don’t really want to be photographed … but once we caught a few, quick shots.
In der Rhein-Neckar-Ecke scheinen sie sich besonders wohl zu fühlen. Ihre Anzahl wird geschätzt auf über 4000!
It seems that they especially like the Rhine-Neckar area. Their number is estimated at over 4000!
Wir kommen jetzt zum Oberen Luisenpark. Leider ist der eingezäunt, und hier wo wir sind, gibt es wohl nur ein Drehkreuz für Leute, die eine Zugangskarte haben. Ein Blick über den Zaun: Da drinnen sieht es ganz nett aus, aber am Zaun wird auch mitgeteilt, dass viele Attraktionen wegen Corona im Moment geschlossen sind. Naja, dann gehen wir außen weiter.
We now get to the Upper Luisenpark. Unfortunately that is fenced in, and here were we are, there seems to be only a turnstile for people who have an access card. One look over the fence shows: It looks quite nice in there, but posters on the fence say that many attractions are closed at the moment because of Corona. Oh well, then we will walk on outside the park.
Wir haben wieder wunderbares Wetter und genießen all das Grün.
Once again we have wonderful weather and we enjoy all the green.
Auf der anderen Seite der Straßenbahnschienen fließt der Neckar. Es fühlt sich wirklich nicht so an, als ob wir mitten in einer Stadt mit über 300.000 Einwohnern wären.
On the other side of the tram lines the Neckar runs. It really does not feel as if we are right in the middle of a city with more than 300.000 inhabitants.
Und da rührt sich was – ein Eichelhäher!
And something is moving there – a Eurasian jay!
Dann an einem Reitstall vorbei, wo Hausrotschwänze unterwegs waren.
Then past a riding stable, where black redstarts were about.
Und jetzt gibts Mittagessen! Wir haben hier sehr lecker gespeist …
And now we get lunch! Here we dined very nicely …
… und am Schluss hat Torben uns noch zwei Glückskekse geholt. Ich hab meinen zuerst geöffnet: irgendein Standardsatz. Aber dann hat Torben seinen aufgemacht – und diesen Zettel hab ich sofort konfisziert, den werde ich jetzt bei allen möglichen Gelegenheiten zücken!
… and towards the end Torben got two fortune cookies for us. I opened mine first: some standard phrase. But then Torben opened his – and this little paper I confiscated right away, I will pull this out now at all kinds of opportunities!

Wir sind wieder an unserem Ausgangspunkt angekommen, beim Wasserturm.
We now reached our starting point again, the Water Tower.
Und jetzt geht es in Richtung Quadrate. Das ist der Ursprung Mannheims. 1606 wurde die Stadt angelegt. Kurfürst Friedrich IV. wollte, dass sie sowohl militärische Voraussetzungen als auch die Ideale der Renaissance erfüllte, und so war die Planstadt aus lauter kleinen Quadraten geboren.
And now we go towards the Squares. That is Mannheim’s origin. 1606 the city was laid out. Elector Friedrich IV wanted that it would both comply with military requirements as well as with the ideals of Renaissance, and thus the planned city of lots of little squares was born.
Wir haben auf unserem Weg etliche Brunnen entdeckt. Hier der Papyrusbrunnen von 1984.

So, und jetzt sind wir in der Fußgängerzone, wo es interessante Gebäude gibt.

Nein, nichts mehr da. Naja, ist ja sowieso Sonntag.

Wieder ein schicker Brunnen, die Grupello-Pyramide.
And once again a pretty fountain, the Grupello Pyramid.
Der erste Teilguss der großen Bronze-Pyramide fand 1705 statt, und dann stand die Skulptur ab 1716 in Düsseldorf.
The first part of the great bronze pyramid was cast 1705, and then the sculpture stood in Düsseldorf from 1716 on.
Und 1738 ließ Kurfürst Carl Philipp sie nach Mannheim bringen. Doch erst als der Wasserturm gebaut wurde, gab es eine Wasserzufuhr und 1893 wurde aus dem Ganzen dann tatsächlich ein Brunnen.
And 1738 Elector Carl Philipp had it transported to Mannheim. But not until the Water Tower was built was there a water supply, and 1893 finally an actual fountain was made out of the whole thing.
Hier die ältesten erhaltenen Gebäude Mannheims: Das alte Rathaus, durch einen Glockenturm verbunden mit der Pfarrkirche. – Was für ein spannendes Ensemble!

Genug für heute, wir gehen wieder in unser Hotel, bei der Bar gibt es ein paar kleine Tische, da gibts jetzt Abendessen.

Übrigens, die Springbrunnen beim Wasserturm sind auch nachts sehenswert.
By the way, the fountains near the Water Tower are worth a look also at night.
