An dem Schiff, das da lag, vorbei und dann haben wir uns zentimeterweise vorgearbeitet.
So past the ship that moored there and then we worked our way forward centimeter by centimeter.
Das war schon beeindruckend!

Und dann ging da unten der Papierkram los …
And then down there they got started on the paperwork …
Eine Viertelstunde waren sie beschäftigt. Leute kamen und gingen … und irgendwann war wohl alles geklärt, da war es dann kurz nach sieben.
For a quarter of an hour they were busy. People came and left … and then finally they had everything settled, it seems, by then it was shortly past seven.
Wir genießen dann noch einmal alle kleinen Annehmlichkeiten in unserer Kabine, so wie diese nette Sitzecke mit dem Hocker / Tisch / Tablett davor.
Meanwhile we enjoy all those little amenities that our cabin has to offer, like this nice corner seat with the stool / table / tray in front of it.
Dann hatten auch wir noch Papierkram. Man kann alle Leute aus dem AIDA-Team hier loben und jede Woche wird ein „Mitarbeiter der Woche“ gekürt. – Wir haben keine Person herausgepickt sondern angemerkt, dass die Leute, die in der Gastronomie und Reinigung arbeiten, super freundlich sind, während Mitarbeiter der Reiseplanung und ähnlichem durchaus anders gepolt sind …
Then we also had some paperwork to do. Here you can praise people of the AIDA team, and every week they nominate an “employee of the week”. – We did not pick out any single person but instead remarked that those people who work in the gastronomy and do the cleaning, are super friendly, while those employed in the travel planning and such things have quite a different attitude …
Aber viel Zeit haben wir für all das nicht. Hier ist es jetzt 8:15 und wir sind dabei, unsere Koffer zu finden. Letzte Nacht mussten wir die fertig gepackt bis spätestens 2 Uhr morgens in den Gang stellen, mit farbigem Band dran. Das zeigt, ob jemand noch einen Ausflug macht oder nicht.
But we do not have much time for all that. Here it is 8:15 am now and we are busy finding our suitcases. Last night we had to have them packed and ready by two in the morning and then you had to leave them in the hallway, with a coloured tag attached. That shows whether somebody will do a last excursion or not.
Denn wir müssen vor unserem gebuchten Ausflug all das durchlaufen, was man normalerweise am Flughafen macht: Koffer aufgeben, Papiere prüfen lassen, Boarding Pass kriegen. – Ja wo sind denn nur unsere Unterlagen???
Because before we go on our booked trip we have to go through all the stuff that you normally do at the airport: drop off your suitcase, have your papers checked, get a boarding pass. – Well, where are our papers now???
Auf dem Bild gerade eben war es 8:25. Unsere Tour soll um 8:30 starten … Aber wir haben unseren Bus noch erwischt. Sonst hätten wir halt dieses UFO nehmen müssen 😊

Doch wir fahren erst um zehn. Bis dahin dürfen wir uns noch ein wenig umsehen. Ich werde dieses lebendige Grün überall vermissen!
But we will not leave until ten. Until then we are allowed to look around a bit. I will certainly miss this lively green everywhere!

Naja, und dann durften wir endlich in den Zug. Die Fahrt alleine ist natürlich schon toll, aber es gibt noch ein Highlight! Also bin ich vorbereitet als unser Guide sagt, er brauche drei Freiwillige. Er hat den Satz gar nicht fertig gekriegt, da war mein Arm schon oben …
Well, and then we got to go onto the train. Of course the ride itself is great already, but there will be another highlight! So I am well prepared as our guide says, he needs three volunteers. He did not even manage to finish the sentence, when my arm was up already …

Aber erst dürfen wir ein wenig die Fahrt genießen! Bevor wir dann das Ende der Strecke an der Cherry Tree Hill Station erreichen.
But first we get to enjoy the ride for a bit! Before we then reach the end of the line at the Cherry Tree Hill Station.

… denn wir dürfen die Lok auf ihrer Drehscheibe in Position bringen, so wie auch die Herren hier.
… because we get to push the locomotive into position on its turntable, just like the gentlemen here.
Dann fährt die Lok an den Waggons vorbei bis über eine Weiche, die wird umgestellt, dann fährt die Lok rückwärts and wird angekoppelt.
Then the locomotive drives past the waggons and over a rail switch, which then gets moved to the other position, then the engine drives backwards and is next hooked up.
Wir genießen noch den Ausblick auf die Küste …

… dann ist Fototermin: Einer der Fahrer knippst geduldig all die Touristen. Ich hab mich auch angestellt, aber nur um die Lok genauer zu inspizieren. Der Fahrer hat mich angegrinst: Ist ja kein Grund, nicht auch ein schönes Foto zu machen! Stimmt eigentlich … TORBEN, komm her!!! 😊
… next comes the photo session. One of the drivers patiently takes shots of all the tourists. I also stood in line, but only to be able to take a closer look at the engine. The driver grinned at me: That is no reason to not also take a pretty picture! He is right of course … TORBEN, come here!!! 😊
Und dann hab ich eine Privatvorführung gekriegt: Erst einmal das Feuer versorgen.
And then I got a private show: First of all tending the fire.
Als nächstes dann: Hier wird Dampf abgelassen.
Then next: Here steam is let off.
Schließlich hat der Fahrer mir gezeigt, wo ich vorne auf die Gleise laufen kann, damit ich all die Pracht von da sehen kann.
Finally the driver showed me where I can run onto the tracks in front, so that I can see all this glory from there.
Was bin ich froh, dass wir diesen Ausflug gebucht haben!!! Auch wenn man dabei dreckige Knie kriegt.
Am I ever happy that we did book this excursion!!! Even if that means you get dirty knees.

Übrigens: die Dampflok kommt ursprünglich aus der Stadt Kirchen in Deutschland, nahe Köln. Dort wurde 1883 die Firma Jung & Staimer gegründet, die später mehrfach umbenannt wurde.
By the way: the engine came originally from the town of Kirchen in Germany, near Cologne. There the company Jung & Staimer was founded in 1883, which was later renamed several times.
Dann sind wir wieder zurück zur St Nicholas Abbey gefahren und dort ausgestiegen. Dies war das Herrenhaus einer Zuckerplantage, erbaut zwischen 1650 und 1660.
Then we rode back to the St Nicholas Abbey and got out of the train there. This was the manor house of a sugar plantation, built between 1650 and 1660.
Zuerst wurden wir durch das Haus selber geführt. Und dabei sind Torben und ich dann irgendwann die letzten und ganz alleine gewesen.
First we were lead through the house itself. And during that tour Torben and I then ended up being the last and all alone.
Aber wir wussten ja, dass auch eine Rumverkostung enthalten sein sollte. Also sind wir los und haben unsere Gruppe gesucht. Gefunden haben wir noch ein paar Leute beim Rum. Also haben wir uns dazugesellt und ein sehr nettes Gespräch mit Simon geführt, der uns nicht nur den Standard-Rum sondern noch einen weiteren probieren hat lassen. (Wir hätten gerne eine Flasche mitgenommen, aber unsere Koffer sind ja schon aufgegeben …)
But we did know that there was also a rum tasting planned. So we marched on and looked for our group. We did find a very few people where the rum was. So we joined them and had a very nice talk with Simon who not only let us taste the usual rum but also another one. (We would have loved to take a bottle with us, but our suitcases were already dropped off …)
Irgendwann haben wir gemerkt, unsere Gruppe war das gar nicht! Also sind wir los … wo sind die denn?
Finally we did realize, that was not at all our group! So we rushed off … where are they?
Wir sind zurück zum Bahnhof gehastet – aber da stand unser Bus noch, und der Fahrer meinte: wir fahren nicht vor zwölf (also in fast einer Stunde). Wir: schaffen wir es dann bis 12:30 zurück zum Schiff, wie geplant? Nö 😊 – Naja, aber immerhin haben wir jetzt noch Zeit, uns umzusehen …
We hastily went back to the train station – but our bus was still there, and the driver just said: we will not leave before noon (so in almost an hour). Us: will we then make it back to the ship by 12:30 as planned? Nyah 😊 – Okay, at least that gives us some time to look around a bit more …
Die Führung durch die Destille haben wir jetzt verpasst …

… aber dafür haben wir jetzt alles ganz für uns. Wir haben uns die voll funktionsfähige Dampfmühle ausgiebig angesehen.
… but instead we now have it all to ourselves. We took our time looking at the fully functional steam mill.
Die Herren hier müssen ganz schön schuften. Das Zuckerrohr wird in der Mühle zerdrückt, um den Saft herauszupressen.
The gentlemen here have to work quite hard. The sugar cane gets crushed in the mill to extract the juice.
Und danach findet die Destillation in „Annabelle“ statt, die seht Ihr hier:

Wie die Lokomotive ist auch sie eine deutsche Dame.
Like the locomotive, she is also a German lady.
Aber wir müssen uns auch von dieser Schönheit jetzt losreißen und auf den Weg zurück zum Bus machen. Und es gibt auch draußen viel zu sehen. Sowohl oben in den Bäumen …
But we have to tear ourselves away from this beauty and start getting back to our bus. And then there is also much to see outside. Both up in the trees …
… als auch unten am Boden.
… and down on the ground.
Naja, wir sind dann zum Bus … und noch immer ist niemand da! Also haben wir uns leckere Snacks gekauft (das Curry war der Hammer!) – doch kaum stehen wir draußen gemütlich beim Essen, sind auf einmal alle abfahrbereit … na gut!
Oh well, we then went back to the bus … and still nobody is there! So we bought some tasty snacks (the curry was wicked!) – but no sooner do we stand outside, leisurely eating, when all of a sudden everybody is there and ready to go … fine!
Wir sind an der ältesten Mühle der Insel vorbeigefahren …
We passed the oldes mill on the island …
… und die schmucke Adresse, an der Rihanna wohnt, wenn sie zu Hause auf Barbados ist.
… and the fancy address, where Rihanna resides when she is at home on Barbados.
Naja, um 13:00 Uhr waren wir dann wieder auf dem Schiff, wo in der Disko „Gepäcklager“ war. Man musste ja um neun Uhr aus den Kabinen raus sein … Hier treffen wir jetzt den Rest der Family wieder.
Oh well, at one pm we were then back on the ship, where in the discotheque the “luggage storage” took place. After all everybody had to be out of the cabins by nine … Here we now meet up with the rest of the family.
Machen wir es kurz … irgendwann gings in den Bus, dann zum Flughafen. Da waren wir nicht die einzigen, die auf den Abflug warteten.
Let us keep it short … eventually we got onto the bus, then went to the airport. There we were not the only ones waiting for take-off.
