Auf der Suche nach einem Restaurant haben wir noch viel gefunden: die rote Dame zum Beispiel.
On our search for a restaurant we have found a lot of other stuff first: the red lady for example.
Und wir hatten noch einen Abstecher geplant: Die St.-Bavo-Abtei, eine Ruine ein bisschen abseits vom Trubel.
And we had planned one more detour: St. Bavo’s Abbey, ruins a bit off the beaten track.
Leider sind sie für Besucher die meiste Zeit geschlossen, wie wir dann erfahren haben ☹. Was man durchlaufen kann: Die „grüne Kirche“: Von der Abteikirche aus dem 7. Jahrhundert steht nur noch eine Mauer. Davor wurden Hainbuchen an den Stellen gepflanzt, an denen früher Säulen standen.
Unfortunately they are closed to the public most of the time, as we then found out ☹. But you can stroll through this: The “green church”: Of the old abbey church, built in the 7th century, only one wall remains. In front of that hornbeam trees were planted on those spots where there used to be pillars.
Na, dann gehen wir zurück ins Zentrum und versuchen es nochmal in der St. Bavo Kathedrale!
Oh well, then we will walk back to the center and give the St Bavo Cathedral another try.
So, dieses Mal dürfen wir uns die Kathedrale ansehen. Hier gibt es den berühmten Altar von den van Eyck Brüdern.
Okay, this time we are allowed to explore the cathedral. The famous altar by the van Eyck brothers is to be found here.
Doch nicht vorne im Kirchenschiff. Da sieht es so aus:

Also haben wir uns umgesehen. Sehr unterschiedliche bunte Fenster haben wir gefunden …
So we took a look around. Very different coloured windows we found …
… Kirsche hat wieder Schlangen entdeckt.

Und ist die Kirche nicht irgendwie sehr rosa?
And doesn’t the church strike you as quite pink?
Wir haben dann auch den Durchgang gefunden, wo man zum Genter Altar kommt. Aber: lange Schlange und 16€ Eintritt. Hm …. wie finden wir das?
We then finally found the entrance where you get to the Ghen altarpiece. But: a long line-up and 16€ entrance fee. Hm … what do we think of that?
Ja, wir haben uns das Anstehen gespart und sind weitergezogen. Wieder vorbei an der Graffiti-Straße und auch am Belfried. Da haben wir den „Mamelokker“ entdeckt: Das Relief bezieht sich auf eine alte römische Legende über einen Mann, der zum Tod durch Verhungern verurteilt wurde. Doch seine Tochter säugte ihn an ihrer Brust, wodurch er überlebte.
Yes, we skipped the standing in line and went on. Once again past the graffiti street and also past the belfry. There we discovered the “Mamelokker”: The relief refers to an old Roman legend about a man who was sentenced to death by starvation. But his daughter suckled him at her breast and thus he survived.

Wir haben endlich auch ein Restaurant gefunden, und was für eins! Selbst die Toiletten waren spektakulär.
We finally also found a restaurant, and quite a special one! Even the toilets were spectacular.

Wie wir wieder nach draußen sind, hat es wieder geregnet. Also sind wir mit Straßenbahn und Bus zum Hauptbahnhof gefahren, denn der hat tolle Decken.
When we went back outside, it was raining again. So with tram and bus we rode to the main station, where there are beautiful ceilings.
Auch wenn das außer uns niemand interessiert hat 😊

Draußen war es nach wie vor nass.
Outside it was still wet.
Also sind wir zurück ins Hotel.
So we went back to the hotel.
Unterwegs haben wir uns Waffeln besorgt, und im Zimmer gab es eine kleine Osterüberraschung!
On the way we had grabbed some waffles, and in our room there was a little Easter surprise!
Ach so, und ein paar Bierchen haben wir auch besorgt …
Oh, and a few beers we had also bought …
