Letztes Jahr hat unser Gibraltar-Besuch ja nicht so ganz geklappt. Also probieren wir es noch einmal, aber diesmal anders: wir parken außerhalb und gehen über die Grenze.
Last year, you might remember, our visit to Gibraltar did not work out as planned. So now we try again, but differently this time: we park the car outside and walk across the border.
Dann darf man nämlich als erstes über den Flughafen laufen!
Because then first of all you get to walk across the airport!
Dann sind wir eine ganze Weile die Hauptstraße entlang gelaufen. Und schon war es Mittag: Fish and Chips!
Then we walked down the Main Street for quite a while. And before we knew it was noon: Fish and chips!
Dann noch schnell ein Gang zur Toilette …
Then off to the toilets before leaving …
Und im Raum davor: eine Feuerzeug-Sammlung.
And in the room in front: a collection of lighters.
Schon hier unten gibt es Kanonen zu sehen, auch wenn das Torben nicht interessiert.
Down here already you see canons, even if that does not interest Torben in the least.
Oder doch?

Und was gabs da zu sehen?

Weiter gehts.
On we go.
Kleiner Halt beim Trafalgar Cemetery.
Short stop at the Trafalgar Cemetery.
„Hier liegen die Überreste derer, die auf Gibraltar nach Nelsons großem Sieg im Oktober 1805 starben, denn die, die während der Schlacht getötet wurden, wurden auf See begraben. Andere Gräber gehen zurück nach 1798.“
“Here lie the remains of some who died of wounds at Gibraltar after Nelson’s great victory in October, 1805, those killed during the battle having been buried at sea. Other graves date from 1798.”
Die Schlacht haben wir auch woanders gefunden.
The battle we also found somewhere else.
Aber jetzt wollen wir weg vom Wasser, ab nach oben.
But now we want to get away from the water, up we go.
Und schon unten bei der Seilbahn wurden wir vor den Affen gewarnt.
And down here at the cable car station we were warned of the monkeys.
Und kaum waren wir oben, hat der erste Torben ausgecheckt.
And no sooner were we at the top than the first one checked Torben out.
Aber: nichts zu essen, uninteressant!
But: nothing to eat, boring!
Wir haben den Ausblick genossen, in drei Richtungen. (Und den ganzen Tag über haben wir uns nicht satt sehen können!)
We enjoyed the view, in three directions. (And all day long we could not get enough of them!)
Ob raus aufs Meer oder mehr ins Landesinnere.
Whether out to the sea or more inland.
Als nächstes haben wir alte Befestigungsanlagen besichtigt.
Next we visited old fortifications.

Aber nicht allen ging es so.
But not all felt that way.
Und es gibt hier nicht nur Affen zu sehen …
And there are not just monkeys to be seen …
… oder Vögel.
… or birds.

Aber es gibt nicht nur spannende Lebewesen zu sehen.
But there are not just interesting living creatures around.
Oder die Kombination, Tier und Maschine?

Oft hatten wir den Eindruck, die Affen wissen genau, wie man sich malerisch platziert.
Often we got the impression that the monkeys know very well how to arrange themselves for a picture.
Naja, wir sind auf jeden Fall eine ganze Weile gelaufen, bis zum Skywalk. Ihr wisst schon, Boden aus Plexiglas und so … war nicht ganz so spektakulär.
Oh well, in any case, we walked for quite a while until we got to the Skywalk. You know the idea, floor out of Plexiglas and all that … it was not all that spectacular.
Doch danach ging der Weg noch weiter, jetzt wurde es wieder interessanter!
But the path went on behind it, and now things got interesting again!
Wieder alte Gemäuer, aber auch tolle Pflanzen.
Again old masonry, but also great plants.
Oder auch hier eine Kombination aus beidem?
Or here as well, a combination of both?
Ganz ehrlich, ich hätte nie soviel Grün erwartet hier oben!
Honestly, I never expected so much greenery up here!
Nach viel Natur kamen wir dann zur O’Hara Battery.
After much nature we then got to the O’Hara Battery.
Zuerst der Maschinenraum.
First the engine room.
Danach: Ducken!
Afterwards: Duck!
Hier ging es lang.
This is where we went.
Auf die Weise kamen wir wieder nach oben, wo uns der Aufbau der Kanone sehr an die auf Rottnest Island erinnert hat. (auch wenn die Kanone selber in schlechtem Zustand ist)
This way we got back above ground, where the setup of the cannon very much reminded us of the one on Rottnest Island. (even if the cannon itself is in a bad condition)
In der Ferne steht eine, die besser aussieht.
In the distance there is one that looks better.
Mit all diesen Kanonen … was man wohl gemacht hat, wenn es hier oben gebrannt hat?
With all these cannons around … what might they have done in case of a fire?
Wir müssen weiter. Es gibt soviel zu sehen hier oben, keine Chance, dass man an einem Tag alles schafft! Und ab jetzt geht es dauernd bergab … bald fühlen wir jeden Muskel in den Beinen, und die Knie beschweren sich.
We have to move on. There is so much to see up here, not a chance to get it all done in one day! And from now on it goes continually downhill … soon we feel every muscle in our legs, and our knees start to complain.
Wir lieben ja Höhlen. St. Michael’s Cave wird einem sehr angepriesen, aber wir haben ja noch so viel zu sehen … also nur ein kurzer Blick. Ein Schild hat uns informiert: „Schon den Römern bekannt, dachte man lange, die Höhle habe keinen Boden. Sie schlängelt sich um die 700 Fuß tief in den Felsen. Die obere Halle, die 1942 als ein behelfsmäßiges Krankenhaus hergerichtet wurde, wird jetzt für Konzerte genutzt.“
Now, we do love caves. St Michael’s Cave is praised very highly, but there is so much more we still want to see … so just a short look. A sign informed us: “Known to the Romans and long believed to be bottomless, this cave winds downward some 700 feet into the rock. The upper hall, fitted out as an auxiliary hospital in 1942, is now used for concerts.”
Es ist auf jeden Fall sehr feucht da drinnen.
In any case, it is very wet in there.
Und der Begriff Show Cave kriegt hier eine ganz neue Bedeutung.
And the term show cave gets a totally new meaning here.

Wieder draußen, haben sich die Affen auf einmal sehr für Torben interessiert.
Back outside, suddenly the monkeys showed a high interest in Torben.

On we go, below the cable car.
Seitlich in den Felsen haben wir immer wieder große Ringe gesehen, auf die Weise hat man wohl all die schweren Geräte hier hoch gekriegt. Ein Ring war aber auf der Straße … da sollte man nicht drüberfahren.
On the side in the rocks we time and again saw rings, we assume that is how they got all the heavy equipment up here. One ring was right on the road though … one should not drive over that.
Viele schöne Blumen haben wir gesehen.
We saw many pretty flowers.
Und immer wieder tolle Schmetterlinge.
And often beautiful butterflies.

Aber von hier hat man einen tollen Ausblick auf den Flughafen und das Stadion.

Bei den „Belagerungstunneln“.

Bei den Tunnelarbeiten haben die Leute bald kaum mehr Luft gekriegt. Daher wurden Öffnungen in die Tunnelwände gemacht: Oh, da kann man dann ja Kanonen hinstellen!
During the works on the tunnels the people had more and more difficulty breathing. So they made openings into the sides of the tunnel: Oh, look here, you can put a cannon there!
Toll gemacht!

Wieder draußen: ein Kalkmeiler.
Back outside: a lime kiln.
Die Tunnel aus dem 2. Weltkrieg konnten wir nicht mehr besichtigen. Von wegen 18:15 machen die zu! Ab 17:15 darf man schon nicht mehr rein …
The tunnels of the 2nd World War we could not visit anymore. Opening times until 6:15 pm, ha! At 5:15 they stop letting people in …
Noch ganz schnell zur „maurischen Burg“. Einfach ein Turm 😊

Aber so haben wir den auch gesehen.
But we have seen it.
Natürlich ist der Blick auch von hier aus toll.
Of course, the view is great from here as well.
Und das war unser – sehr anstrengender – Tag auf Gibraltar.
And that was our – very exhausting – day on Gibraltar.
