Heute war es endlich soweit, ich bin in den Rocky Mountains Ski gefahren! Gestern habe ich meine Skiausrüstung und den 2-Tagespass online gekauft und dann ging es heute morgen um 9 Uhr los. Das Ausleihen der Ausrüstung (Skier, Stöcke, Schuhe und Helm) war innerhalb einer halben Stunde durch und das Abholen des Skipasses ging sehr schnell. Also ab zum Lift!
Von Whistler Village aus kann man zwei riesige Ski-Gebiete erreichen (Whistler Mountain und Blackcomb Mountain), die beide mit einer Gondelbahn verbunden sind – der Peak-2-Peak Bahn. Blackcomb Mountain ist ein Gletschergebiet mit vielen schwarzen Pisten, und da das Wetter heute sehr bescheiden war (bedeckt und leichter Schneefall), hab ich mich entschlossen mit Whistler Mountain anzufangen. Also reihte ich mich in die lange Schlange vor der Whistler Village Gondola ein. Aber auch hier ging alles sehr schnell, da die Gondelbahn eine hohe Kapazität hat.
Today was finally the day, I skied in the Rocky Mountains! Yesterday I booked online my skiing equipment and the 2-day-ticket and this morning at 9 am I was on my way. Renting the equipment (ski, poles, boots and helmet) was done in less half an hour and the picking up of the ticket was very quick. So let’s go to the lift.
From Whistler Village you can reach two huge skiing areas (Whistler Mountain und Blackcomb Mountain) which are connected by a gondola – the Peak-2-Peak cable car. Blackcomb Mountain is a glacier area with a lot of black trails and since today the weather was quite poor (cloudy and some snowfall) I decided to begin with the Whistler Mountain. So I joined the long queue in front of the Whistler Village gondola. But also here everything went very quickly because the capacity of the cable car is very high.
Vormittags habe ich ein wenig die einfachen Pisten dieses Skigebiets erkundet – nach zwei Jahren ohne Ski fahren wollte ich es langsam angehen lassen. Die Sicht war nicht wirklich gut, aber der Schnee war fantastisch. Es ist unglaublich, Whistler Village ist nur 675 m über NN und das Skigebiet ist nicht höher als 2300 m, aber sogar für eine Abfahrt nach Whistler Village sind die Bedingungen einwandfrei.
Da das Wetter nicht wirklich besser wurde und mir auch ein wenig kühl wurde, bin ich mit der Peak-2-Peak in das Blackcomb Mountain Gebiet gefahren und hab erst einmal Mittag gemacht. Mal schaun wie lange ich heute noch fahre…
During the morning I explored a bit the easy trails in this skiing area – after two years without skiing I wanted to start easy. Visibility was not really good but the snow was fantastic. It is amazing, Whistler village is only 675 m above zero and the skiing area does not go above 2300 m but even for a run down to Whistler village the conditions are excellent!
Since the weather did not get better and I was also getting cold, I went with the Peak-2-Peak to the Blackcomb Mountain area where I had my lunch break. Let’s see how long I will ski today…
Der Nachmittag brachte zwar kein besseres Wetter (im Gegenteil, es hat stärker geschneit) aber gestärkt vom Mittagessen habe ich das Gebiet relativ gut erkunden können. Ich habe sogar eine schwarze Piste durch einen Wald gewagt, da an der Stelle die Sicht akzeptabel war. Zu den schwarzen Pisten muss man erwähnen, dass diese hier nicht präpariert sind, daher ist gute Sicht um so wichtiger, wenn man das Gebiet nicht kennt. Da Blackcomb Mountain wie gesagt ein Getschergebiet ist, sind die Pisten auch entsprechend eisig. Ich hatte dennoch viel Spass und bin fast bis zur Schließung der Lifte gefahren.
Insgesamt machen die Skigebiete einen tollen Eindruck, auch wenn man was die Lifte angeht von den Alpen mehr Komfort gewohnt ist. Wetterglocken gibt es bei den zahlreichen Sesselliften nicht. Doch für die nächste Wintersaison ist bereits eine Investition von 60 Millionen Dollar angekündigt.
Und morgen soll es Sonnenschein geben… schwarze Pisten ich komme!!
The afternoon brought no change in the weather (even worse, the snow fall was stronger) but invigorated from my lunch I explored the area pretty well. Actually I did try one black trail through the forest because the visibility was at that spot quite fair. One word to the black trails because here they are not groomed at all, therefore good visibility is much more important if you are not familiar with the area. As mentioned Blackcomb Mountain is a glacier area, thus the trails are quite icy. Nevertheless I did have a lot of fun and skied nearly till the end of the lift opening times.
Overall the skiing areas give a good impression however I am used to a higher comfort from the Alps. Weather covers you will not find at any of the numerous chairlifts. But for the next winter season an investment of 60 million dollars has already been announced.
And for tomorrow sunshine is forecast… black trails, here I come!!
