Sonntag war unser letzter ganzer Tag in Vancouver … da mussten wir noch etwas erledigen. Also sind wir sehr früh aufgestanden, und um 6:45 Uhr waren wir im Stanley Park. Es war noch recht dunkel …
Sunday was our last complete day in Vancouver … there was something we had to get done. So we got up very early, and at 6:45 a.m. we were in Stanley Park. It was still quite dark …
Wir sind dann zum Beaver Lake und waren rechtzeitig vor Sonnenaufgang dort. Gut, dass wir uns nicht mehr Zeit gelassen haben! Denn wir konnten den Biber wunderbar sehen, erst auf einem Inselchen neben seinem Bau …
We then went to the Beaver Lake and were there on time before sunrise. Good thing that we had not taken our time! Because we could see the beaver wonderfully well, first on a little island next to its lodge …
… dann im Wasser. Und als es ganz hell war – – – da ist er verschwunden und nicht wieder aufgetaucht! Natürlich waren aber jede Menge andere Tiere da. Enten, Gänse, andere Vögel … und ein Eichhörnchen.
… then in the water. And once it was light – – – the beaver disappeared and did not show up again! But of course there were also all kinds of other animals. Ducks, geese, other birds … and a squirrel.
Wir sind dann auf dem Rückweg zum Hotel noch einmal bei den Reihern vorbei, aber der Himmel war recht grau, und es fing an zu regnen. Also sind wir nicht lang geblieben.
On the way back to the hotel we stopped by the herons once more, but the sky was so grey, and it started to rain. So we did not stay long.
Ja, und um elf Uhr dreißig waren wir dann schon wieder im Stanley Park.
Yes, and at 11:30 a.m. we were once again back in Stanley Park.

Da haben wir uns ein paar Frösche angesehen …

… haben Helen besucht, eine Delfindame, die Teile ihrer Flossen eingebüßt hat …
… visited Helen, a dolphin lady, who is missing parts of her fins …
… sind bei den Arapaimas und anderen großen Fischen vorbei …
… went over to the arapaimas and other big fish …
… haben Quallen entdeckt …
… discovered jellyfish …
… aber das war natürlich alles nicht der Grund, warum wir ins Aquarium gegangen sind. Der Hauptgrund waren diese putzigen Tierchen:
… but of course all that was not the reason why we had gone to the aquarium. The main reason were these cute animals:
Wir hatten nämlich ein „Animal Encounter“ gebucht. Zu sechst wurden wir „hinter die Kulissen“ geführt. Erst haben wir eine Menge über die See-Otter erfahren. Zum Beispiel, dass sie im 19Jh. In der Gegend um Vancouver herum fast ausgerottet wurden, wegen ihres Fells. Wir durften ein echtes berühren, das war unglaublich weich und dicht.
Because we had booked an “animal encounter”. We were six people who got led “behind the scenes”. First we learned a lot about the sea otters. For example that in the 19th century they were almost extinct in the area around Vancouver, because they were hunted for their fur. We got to touch a real one, it was incredibly soft and dense.
Dann wurden wir in einen Raum gebracht, in dem es doch recht nach Fisch roch … Da haben wir all unsere Taschen abgeben müssen – ja, auch die Kamera. Wir durften uns die Hände waschen, dann nichts mehr anfassen, und los gings zum Füttern! Hier seht Ihr übrigens den Fütterungsplan. Links in der Mitte sind die See-Otter, die teuersten Tiere des Aquariums, wie wir gelernt haben.
Then we were led to a room that smelled quite a bit of fish … There we then had to hand over all our bags – yes, the camera as well. We got to wash our hands, then were not allowed to touch anything, and off we went for the feeding! Here you can see the feeding schedule, by the way. On the left side in the middle, that is the sea otters, the most expensive animals in the aquarium, as we found out.
Ja, wir durften nicht fotografieren, wäre auch schwierig geworden, mit den fischigen Händen. Aber es war ein Fotograf vor Ort, der ein paar Bilder gemacht hat:
Yes, we were not allowed to take photos, and it would have been difficult in any case, with the fishy hands. But there was a photographer on site, who took a few shots:
Schön wars! – Aber wir mussten nach dem Otter-Erlebnis schon gleich wieder los, wir wollten nämlich um drei Uhr bei Science World sein, um im Omnimax einen Film zu schauen:
It was great! – But after our otter experience, we had to rush off again right away, because at three p.m. we wanted to be at Science World, to watch a movie in the Omnimax:
Wir haben ein paar Astronauten auf der Internationalen Raumstation begleitet …
We got to accompany a few astronauts on the International Space Station …
… und mit ihnen auf die Erde geblickt. Toll!
… and together with them we got to look at the Earth. Great!
Als der Film aus war, hatten wir wieder keine Zeit zum Ausruhen.
When the movie was over, once again we had no time to rest.
Wir haben gleich den nächsten Bus zurück zum Stanley Park genommen. Denn die Otter-Fotos vom Fotografen waren natürlich direkt nach der Fütterung noch nicht fertig. Die haben wir also jetzt abgeholt. Da ist aber jemand erschrocken, dass wir schon wieder da waren! 😉
We right away took the next bus back to Stanley Park. Because those official pictures that the photographer made had of course not been ready yet, right after the feeding. So now we went to pick them up. Oops, somebody got a shock, that we were back again already! 😉
Wir haben uns die Otter dann noch einmal in Ruhe und mit Kamera in der Hand angesehen.
We then took another close look at the otters, taking our time, and the camera.
Dass die Otter an Land kommen, passiert in der Wildnis übrigens selten bis nie. Man sieht schon an den Hinterbeinen, diese Tiere sind fürs Wasser gebaut:
That the otters come on land, is something that in the wilderness will happen rarely if at all. You can see it when you look at the hind legs: these creatures are built for the water:
Naja, wir haben uns dann noch das eine oder andere angesehen, dann war es auch schon sechs Uhr, da macht das Aquarium zu.
Well, we then looked around a bit at this and that, then it was six p.m. already, that is when the aquarium closes for the day.
Biber und Otter – das war doch wieder ein toller Tag!
