Eigentlich war er Mönch. Doch er musste das Kloster verlassen, weil er an Tuberkulose litt. Nach seiner überraschenden Genesung begann er 1961, auf einem geerbten Grundstück eine Kathedrale zu bauen.
Originally he was a monk. But he had to leave the monastery, because he suffered from tuberculosis. In 1961, after his surprising recovery, he started to build a cathedral on a piece of property he had inherited.
Und seitdem baut er einfach. Er hat keine Ausbildung als Architekt, Maurer, Statiker … er baut einfach immer weiter.
And since then he has been simply building. He has no training as an architect, a mason, a structural engineer … he simply keeps building.
Der Petersdom in Rom ist eine seiner Inspirationen, und er legt großen Wert auf viel Raum, viel Licht, viel Leichtigkeit.
St. Peter’s in Rome is one of his inspirations, and he stresses the importance of much space, much light, much airiness.

Und natürlich ist so ein Bau teuer, also nutzt Don Justo alles, was er kriegen kann: die Ziegelsteine sind Ausschuss aus einer nahen Ziegelfabrik.
And of course such a project is expensive, so Don Justo makes use of whatever he can get: the bricks have been discarded at a nearby brick-making plant.

Die Vollendung seiner Kathedrale wird er wohl nicht mehr erleben, er ist jetzt immerhin schon über 80 Jahre alt.
He will most probably not live to see the completion of his cathedral, after all he is already in his eighties.
Aber vielleicht ist das auch gut so … was würde er denn machen, wenn sein Werk vollendet wäre?
But maybe that is for the best … what would he do, once his creation was finished?
