06.05.2018: Fortsetzung / continued

Nach der tollen Kathedrale von Don Justo hatten wir noch mehr auf dem Programm: Also haben wir uns wieder auf den Weg gemacht. Hier sind wir erst mal nur vorbeigefahren.

After the great cathedral of Don Justo we had more planned for the day: So we drove on once again. And here we only passed – for now.

Unser nächstes Ziel war nämlich El Escorial, ein Mönchskloster mit Bibliothek.

Because our next destination was El Escorial, a monastery with a library.

Durch den Innenhof haben wir die als erstes angesteuert. Dort gibt es wunderbare alte Bücher, schöne Deckengemälde und tolle alte wissenschaftliche Geräte. Nur darf man dort leider nicht fotografieren, also müsst Ihr Euch das selber vor Ort ansehen – und die Bücherei ist SEHR sehenswert! Aber hier ein Detail vom Innenhof:

We crossed the courtyard and went to the library first. There they have wonderful old books, gorgeous murals on the ceiling and great old scientific instruments. But unfortunately one is not allowed to take any pictures there, so you will have to go and see it all for yourself – and the library is VERY much worth seeing! But here you see a detail of the courtyard:

Im restlichen Gebäude gab es auch viele Räume, in denen man keine Fotos machen durfte, aber so ein paar Eindrücke haben wir natürlich für Euch. Diese schöne Decke zum Beispiel:

In the other parts of the building there were many more rooms where no photography was allowed, but we do have a few impressions for you, of course. This gorgeous ceiling, for example:

Wenn Ihr über El Escorial nachlest, findet Ihr heraus, dass es unter anderem gebaut wurde, damit König Philipp II dort seinen Vater beerdigen konnte. Wir haben eine Menge Särge gesehen …

If you read up on El Escorial, you will find out that it was built – among other things – so that king Philipp II could bury his father there. We saw a large number of coffins …

Viele Türen hatten ganz tolle Intarsien-Arbeiten. Leider waren sie alle mit Plastik-Scheiben geschützt, daher spiegelt das Foto etwas …

Many doors had incredible works or marquetry. Unfortunately they were all covered with see-through plastic, that is why the photo has a bit of a reflection …

Dann gab es noch viele tolle Gemälde zu sehen. Das hier unten bedeckt eine ganze lange Wand und ist gemalt als wäre es ein Vorhang.

Then there were also lots of great paintings to be seen. The one below covers a whole long wall and is painted as if it was a curtain.

Und noch ein nettes Gemälde. – Sagt man nicht, dass in der Mode irgendwann alles wiederkommt? Dann bin ich ja gespannt, wann unsere Herren so herumlaufen werden …

And another nice painting. – Don’t they say that in fashion sooner or later, everything comes back in style? Then I am really curious, when our gentlemen will run around like this …

So, zum Abschluss noch mal ein Blick auf das Kloster und den dazugehörigen Garten.

Ja, und dann hatten wir noch genug Zeit, das große Kreuz vom Anfang dieses Eintrags zu erkunden.

Yes, and then we still had enough time to explore the large cross from the beginning of this entry.

Dieses Kreuz ist Teil eines riesigen Monuments, das Franco hat bauen lassen. Er liegt hier übrigens auch begraben.

This cross is part of a gigantic monument that Franco had ordered built. And he is also buried here, by the way.

Man geht unten am Kreuz vorbei und geht dann durch diesen langen Wandelgang. – Wir wollten übrigens gerne auch zum Kreuz hoch, und eigentlich sollte das auch möglich sein: rechts unter dem Kreuz seht Ihr die Gleise der Standseilbahn. Doch die ist seit längerer Zeit geschlossen – warum genau war nicht ganz klar.

You pass below the cross and then walk through this long colonnade. – By the way, we had meant to go up to the cross, and that should normally be possible: below the cross on the right, you see the tracks of the cable car. But that has been closed down for some time – it was not quite clear why.

Wir sind natürlich auch hineingegangen – das darf man zur Zeit. Hier seht Ihr die riiiiiesige Tür:

Wahnsinn! Alles ist riesig. Gebaut zu Ehren der Gefallenen des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges.

Incredible! Everything is gigantic. Built to honour those who died in the Spanish Civil War.

Leider durfte man auch dort nicht viel fotografieren, deswegen nur zwei Fotos. Und hier seht Ihr den Blick, den man hat, wenn man vom Monument weg übers Tal schaut:

Unfortunately there as well you were not allowed to take a lot of photos, so only two pictures for you. And here you see the view that you have when you look away from the monument over the valley:
