Unser letzter ganzer Tag in Polen, leider. Und wie man sehen kann, hat es schon wieder geregnet …
Our last whole day in Poland, sadly. And as you can see, it had rained yet again …
Ihn hier machte das Wetter wohl auch nicht glücklich.
This guy here also seemed not all that happy about the weather.
Zuerst haben wir uns die Katharinenkirche angesehen, die älteste Kirche Danzigs (oder doch die zweitälteste, wenn die Nikolaikirche die älteste sein sollte – so ganz sicher ist man sich da nicht).
First we took a look at St. Catherine’s Church, the oldest church in Gdansk (or maybe the second oldest in case St. Nicholas Church is the oldest one – the experts are not quite sure about that).
Der komplette Name dieser sehr schönen Kirche ist „Kirche der St. Katharina von Alexandrien“. Das steinerne Hauptschiff wurde zwischen 1230 und 1240 gebaut.
The complete name of this very beautiful church is “Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria”. The stone nave was built between 1230 and 1240.
Vielleicht denkt Ihr Euch, dass alles ein wenig ramponiert aussieht?
Maybe you are thinking to yourselves that it all looks a bit battered?
2006 gab es hier leider einen schlimmen Brand.
Unfortunately a big fire broke out here in 2006.
Innerhalb weniger Minuten brannte das Kirchendach aus und brach zusammen.
Within only a few minutes the church roof burned down and caved in.
Bis spät in die Nacht kämpften die Feuerwehrleute, um den Turm zu erhalten.
Until late in the night, Firemen struggled hard to save the tower.
Ein Großteil der wertvollen Kunststücke wurde gerettet.
Most of the valuable artwork was saved.
Davor hatte es schon 1905 ein großes Feuer gegeben, nach einem Blitzschlag.
In 1905 as well there had been a big fire, after a stroke of lightning.
Aber vor den kahlen Wänden leuchten die intakten Schönheiten in dieser Kirche umso mehr: Hier die Kanzel …
But in front of the bare walls the intact beautiful elements of this church shine all the more: Here the pulpit …
… und hier die wunderschöne Holzkonstruktion, die das Taufbecken umgibt. (eine Quelle spricht hier vom 17. Jahrhundert, eine andere Website datiert es ganz konkret auf 1585)
… and here the magnificent wooden construction which surrounds the baptismal font. (one source says it should be 17th century, a different one dates it to 1585 exactly)
Als wir da waren, übte gerade der Chor, deswegen haben wir uns beeilt, wieder zu verschwinden und nicht zu stören, aber immerhin noch ein Detailphoto haben wir für Euch:
When we were there, the choir was having its practice, so we did our best to not disturb them and disappear rather quickly, but we do have one more detailed picture for you:
Als nächstes gings nach unten: 1986 wurden achäologische Untersuchungen gemacht, und vier Meter unter Straßenniveau hat man Teile eines christlichen Friedhofes aus dem 10. – 12. Jahrhundert gefunden. Das mag die Leiche eines der ersten Christen in der Region sein.
Next we went below ground: 1986 archaeological investigations were made, and four metres below street level, they found parts of a Christian cemetery of the 10th to 12th century. This here might have been the corpse of one of the first Christians in the region.
Wieder in die andere Richtung: grünes Licht gab es beim Turmaufstieg.
And now in the other direction: we got a green light for climbing up the tower.
Und hier im Turm gibt es ein sehr spannendes Turmuhrenmuseum.
And here in the tower you find a very exciting church clock museum.
Hier zum Beispiel eine sehr frühe mechanische Uhr aus dem 14. oder 15. Jahrhundert, eine der ältesten erhaltenen Uhren in ganz Polen!
Here for example a very early mechanical clock from the 14th or 15th century, one of the oldest preserved clocks in all of Poland!
Und hier seht Ihr die Uhr aus der Kadettenschule im Lazienkipalast in Warschau, von 1789. Hergestellt hat sie ein Uhrenmacher aus Danzig: sein Name war Kühnapfel.
And here you see the clock of the Cadet School in the Lazienki Palace in Warsaw, dated 1789. It was made by a clockmaker from Gdansk: his name was Kühnapfel.
Dies hier gehört auch zu einer Uhr: das weltlängste Pendel, mit 31,22m Länge.
This here is also part of a clock: the worlds longest pendulum, it is 31,22 m long.
Ein Stockwerk höher werden auch andere Uhren ausgestellt.
One storey up there are also other clocks on display.
Und dann sind wir weiter nach oben gestiegen, immer noch mit spannenden Lichteffekten. Vorbei an einem ersten Vorgeschmack auf das, was es dann als nächstes geben wird.
And then we climbed even higher, still with those exciting lighting effects. We passed a first inkling of that which we will next take a look at.
1575 gab es hier das erste Glockenspiel mit 14 Glocken. Später wurde es mal erneuert und auf 35 Glocken aufgestockt. Nach dem Brand 1905, der damals den Turm zerstörte, wurde in nur drei Jahren genug Geld gesammelt für ein neues Glockenspiel mit 37 Glocken – damals die schwerste Glockengruppe der Welt.
1575 they had the first carillon here, with 14 bells. Later it was remade and they augmented the number of bells to 35. After the fire of 1905, which back then destroyed the tower, in just three years they collected enough money for a new carillon with 37 bells – back then that was the heaviest group of bells worldwide.
Im zweiten Weltkrieg raubten die Deutschen die Glocken zum Umschmelzen. Ein paar sind dem wohl entgangen und schließlich in der Marienkirche in Lübeck gelandet.
During WWII the Germans stole the bells to have them remelted. A few of them seem to have survived intact and they ended up in the St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck.
Heute hängen hier 49 Glocken. Es ist eines von nur acht Glockenspielen in ganz Europa. Vor kurzem wurde eine neue Melodie komponiert und gespielt, im Angedenken an den erstochenen Bürgermeister Pawel Adamowicz.
Today 49 bells are hanging here. It is one of just eight carillons in the whole of Europe. A short while ago a new melody was composed and played, to commemorate the stabbed mayor Pawel Adamowicz.
Wir sind jetzt bis ganz nach oben gegangen, den Ausblick genießen.
Now we climbed up to the very top, to enjoy the view.
Da sieht man zum Beispiel unser Hotel sehr gut.

Eines davon: die Marienkirche. Seht Ihr, wie flach das Dach auf dem über 70m hohenTurm ist? Dafür gibt es einen sehr guten Grund! Der Legende nach kommt der freundliche Riese Stolem hier und da in die Stadt – und das Turmdach ist sein Sitzplatz.
One of them: St. Mary’s Church. Can you see how flat the roof is, on the tower that is over 70m high? There exists a very good reason for that! Legend tells us that the friendly giant Stolem comes into the city every once in a while – and the roof on the tower is his seat.
Und weiter vorne: Der Jacek-Turm, erbaut Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts und die Markthalle Hala Targowa, ein Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert.
And a bit closer: The Jacek Tower, built at the end of the 14th century and the market hall Hala Targowa, a building from the 19th century.
Die dreistöckige Markthalle haben wir uns dann auch gleich genauer angesehen, als wir die Kirche wieder verlassen hatten. 2005 wurde das Gebäude renoviert.
And at this market hall with three storeys we took a closer look right afterwards, once we had left the church. 2005 the building had been renovated.
Die Dachkonstruktion ist auf jeden Fall sehenswert.
The roof construction is definitely worth a look.
Und natürlich kann es sein, dass der Fotografin beim Einfangen dieses Designs auch ein gewisses Kleid aufgefallen sein könnte. – Der Rest ist Schweigen!
And of course it just might have happened that the lady photographer could have spotted a certain dress when taking pictures of the roof design. – The rest is silence!
Auf jeden Fall gibt es hier jede Menge kleine Geschäfte. Aber gehen wir doch mal ganz nach unten:
In any case, there are a lot of little shops here. But let us go all the way down to the bottom:
Bei den Danzigern heißt dieses Gebäude auch Dominikhalle, weil hier im Mittelalter ein Dominikanerkloster stand. Davon sind noch ein paar Reste zu sehen.
The people of Gdansk also call this building Dominic Hall, because in the Middle Ages a Dominican Monastery stood here. Of that a few remains can be seen.
So, und jetzt wollen wir uns auch die Marienkirche aus der Nähe ansehen.
Okay, and now we want to take a closer look at the St. Mary’s Church.
Leider war um die Kirche selber herum eine große Baustelle, viel war mit Bauzäunen abgesperrt, auch die eine kleine Gasse, in die ich unbedingt wollte … Aber die Bauarbeiter haben meine Bitte weitergegeben, und dann kam auch eine nette Dame, die mir kurzerhand ihren Bauhelm übergestülpt hat, und dann durfte ich für drei kleine Fotos in die Gasse:
Unfortunately there was a huge construction site surrounding the church, much was blocked by construction fences, also the little alley that I wanted to enter … But the workers passed on my request, and then a very friendly lady came who simply put her hard hat onto my head, and then I was allowed into the alley for three quick photos:
Um diese drei Schweine ging es mir: 1460 wurde die Stadt von Deutschen Rittern belagert. Schließlich hatte die hungernde Bevölkerung noch genau drei Schweine übrig, die geschlachtet wurden. Alles wurde verwertet, bis auf die Köpfe. Die katapultierte man über die Stadtmauer auf die Feinde. Und dieser Trick wirkte: die Ritter zogen ab, denn offensichtlich hatte Danzig ja noch mehr als genug Nahrung … Und die Idee hatte Johann Ferber, der danach nicht nur dieses Wappen führte und als Held gefeiert wurde, sondern auch Heeresführer der Stadt wurde und Ratsmitglied, und dann lange Bürgermeister war.
These three pigs are what I had been looking for: 1460 the city was under siege by Teutonic Knights. Finally the starving population had exactly three pigs left, which were slaughtered. Every bit was used, except for the heads. Those were loaded into a catapult and thrown at the enemies. And this ruse worked: the Knights withdrew, for obviously Gdansk still had more than enough to eat … And this had been the idea of Johann Ferber, who afterwards not only carried this crest and was celebrated as a hero, he also became the town’s army commander and councillor, and then for a long time mayor.
So. Raus aus der Baustelle und ab zur Kirche! Die heißt natürlich auch mit vollem Namen viel toller als Marienkirche: Es ist die Kathedralbasilika der Himmelfahrt der Allerheiligsten Jungfrau Maria.
Okay. Now let’s leave the construction site and check out the church! Of course this one as well has a nice and long name: It is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Sie ist auf jeden Fall unter den größten Backsteinkirchen der Welt. 25.000 Menschen finden in ihr Platz, auf 4.900m².
It is definitely one of the largest brick churches of the world. 25.000 people fit into it, on 4.900m².
Hier im Hauptraum erreicht die Decke eine Höhe von 30m. Die Kirche ist über 100m lang und kommt an der breitesten Stelle auf über 60m!
Here in the central hall the ceiling reaches a height of 30m. The church is more than 100m long and at its widest spot, it reaches more than 60m!
Auch hier darf man auf den Turm hoch steigen. Über 400 Stufen gilt es zu erklimmen.
Here as well you can go up the tower. There are more than 400 steps to take.
Und dann darf man doch tatsächlich an den Dachsparren vorbeiklettern.
And you actually climb past all the rafters under the roof.
Außerdem sieht man – schön wie eine Kuchenform – hier die hübschen Deckenbögen von der anderen Seite.
Here you also see – beautiful like a baking mould – the pretty ceiling arches from the other side.
Dann haben wir das Dach hinter uns gelassen und sind weiter nach oben geklettert.
We left the roof behind us and kept on climbing higher up.
Der Glockenturm ist 82m hoch … über 400 Stufen, habe ich das schon erwähnt???
The bell tower is 82m high … more than 400 steps, did I mention that already???
Und dann waren wir oben und hatten wieder einen wunderbaren Ausblick über die Stadt.
And then we had reached the top and once again had a beautiful view of the city.
Aber natürlich haben wir uns die Kirche auch von innen genauer angesehen.
But we naturally also took a closer look at the inside of the church.
Und wen haben wir hier gefunden? Die drei kleinen Schweinchen!
And who did we find there? The three little piglets!
Auch in der Kirche wurde an allen Ecken und Enden renoviert, aber es gab immer noch eine Menge zu sehen. Schon alleine die Decke ist wirklich beeindruckend.
Inside the church they were also doing renovation works at all corners, but there was still a lot to see. Just a look at the ceiling is quite impressive.

Wir haben alle möglichen Figuren gesehen …
We saw all kinds of sculptures …
… auch Georg den Drachentöter. So heißt er doch, oder?
… also George the Dragon-Slayer. That is his name, isn’t it?
Und wir haben natürlich gesehen: Die astronomische Uhr von Hans Düringer aus Nürnberg.
And of course we also saw: The astronomical clock by Hans Düringer of Nuremberg.
1464 bekam er vom Rat der Stadt Danzig den Auftrag. 1470 war die Uhr fertig.
1464 he got the order from the council of the city of Gdansk. 1470 the clock was finished.
Wie man sieht, zeigt sie zweimal 12 Stunden, also insgesamt 24 an. Man sieht auch den Lauf von Mond und Sonne durch den Tierkreis.
As you can see it shows two times 12 hours, so 24 all together. You can also see the course of moon and sun through the zodiac.
Leider wurde die Uhr – die nach dem julianischen Kalender konstruiert worden war – nach der Einführung des gregorianischen Kalenders 1582 nicht mehr instandgehalten. Ihr Innenleben ist daher wohl in einem sehr schlechten Zustand.
Unfortunately the clock – which had been constructed according to the Julian calendar – was not kept in good repair after the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Its inner workings are supposed to be in a very bad condition.
Mit der Panoramafunktion der Kamera wollte ich die Uhr, die sehr hoch ist, noch einmal in allen Details fotografieren … das hätte ich wohl besser gelassen …

Naja, wir haben uns weiter die Kirche angesehen, dann sind wir wieder nach draußen. Nur leider war Montag!
Oh well, we looked around the church a bit more, then we went back outside. Bad luck that it was Monday!
Erinnert Ihr Euch an die Einträge zu Posen? Da war ja alles zu … und an den folgenden Tagen haben wir bei den verschiedenen Städten und Sehenswürdigkeiten immer mal nachgesehen, ob das mit dem Montags-ZU! eine generelle polnische Einrichtung ist, aber nein. Überall sonst war auch Montag Besuchszeit … nur in Danzig dann natürlich doch nicht.
Do you remember the entries about our stay in Poznan? Where everything was closed … and the following days at the different cities and sights we kept checking, whether this Monday-CLOSED! is a general feature in Poland, but no. Everywhere else we looked, on Mondays things were open … only in Gdansk of course, there they were not.
Wir hätten uns zum Beispiel gerne den berühmten Kran angesehen … aber der war ZU. 1363 wurde er das erste Mal erwähnt.
For example: we would have liked to take a look at the famous crane … but it was CLOSED. 1363 it was mentioned for the very first time.
Immerhin in klein haben wir den Kran noch begutachten können.
At least we got to check it out in miniature.
Noch was eher kleines haben wir gefunden: Die größten dieser Steinfiguren waren um 1,30m hoch. Man weiß nicht viel über sie. Sie werden auf das frühe Mittelalter datiert und stellen wohl Krieger und religiöse Figuren dar.
And we found something else rather small: The largest pieces among these stone sculptures were around 1,30m high. There is not much known about them. The experts date them in the early Middle Ages, and it is assumed they show warriors and religious characters.
Dann hätten wir uns gerne auch noch das Rathaus angesehen, aber … Montag!
Next we would have liked to also see the town hall, but … Monday!
Ach so, und das Bernsteinmuseum … na, Ihr wisst schon. Also haben wir uns in dem sehr süßen Anima-Café mit Spiegeldecke leckeren Kuchen gegönnt.
Oh, well, and the amber museum … ah, you know. So instead we went to the cute Anima-Café with mirrors on the ceiling and enjoyed some yummy cake.
