Meaning … metaphorically speaking. Today we will check out the „historic dockyard“ in Portsmouth. There alone there are enough sights amassed to keep you busy for at least a week. The HMS Warrior, for example.
Unter Königin Victoria gebaut, im Jahre 1860, war sie das erste Panzerschiff mit eisernem Rumpf.

Fertiggestellt 1765, war sie 1805 das Flaggschiff von Vizeadmiral Nelson in der Schlacht von Trafalgar.
Finalized in the year 1765, in 1805 it was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Nelson in the Battle of Trafalgar.
Die schönen Farben sind übrigens so, wie sie damals gewesen sein müssen. Etliche hundert Farbproben wurden an verschiedenen Stellen genommen. Und mancherorts fand man bis zu 72 Farbschichten!
The beautiful colours by the way are just as they must have been back then. Several hundred colour samples have been taken at different spots. And at some locations they found up to 72 layers of paint!
Aber wir wollen noch weiter zurück in der Geschichte: Zur Mary Rose. Und hier ein kleiner Lesetipp: Ich bin in den wunderbaren historischen Krimis von C. J. Sansom das erste Mal auf die Mary Rose gestoßen, und von daher kann ich im Zusammenhang mit diesem Schiff das Buch „Der Pfeil der Rache“ empfehlen.

1545 ist die Mary Rose, das Flaggschiff von Heinrich VIII. vor Portsmouth gesunken. 1982 wurde das, was von ihr noch übrig war, gehoben und in einem Museum hinter Glas ausgestellt. Und 2013 wurde sie in das neue Museum überführt, wo sie jetzt seit 2016 ohne Glasschutz zu sehen ist. – Und man riecht auch das alte Holz!
1545 the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s flagship, sunk just off Portsmouth. 1982 that which remained of it, was raised from the seabed and displayed in a museum behind glass. And 2013 it was all moved to the new museum where since 2016 it can be seen without the protective glass cover. – And you can also smell the old wood!

Wie am Eingang des Museums geschrieben, hier geht es um die Menschen, die mit der Mary Rose untergegangen sind. In vielen Schaukästen sind Dinge zusammengestellt, die einer Person gehörten, komplett mit Erklärung, warum dieses Skelett wohl dem oder jenem gehörte. Bei den persönlichen Gegenständen des Schreiners wurde dieses Manikürset gefunden! Zum Reinigen von Fingernägeln und Ohren.
As they announce at the entry to the museum, this is all about the people who sank with the Mary Rose. In many display cases things are arranged that belonged to one particular person, complete with the explanation of why this skeleton is believed to belong to this or that person. Fazit: Ein tolles Museum – für das man sich am besten drei Tage Zeit nimmt. Es gibt wirklich eine Menge zu sehen, und durch die Zuordnung zu bestimmten Personen wird das Ganze sehr greifbar und real.
Conclusion: A great museum – for which you should best give yourself three days‘ time. There is a lot to see, really, and because of the connection to certain actual persons, everything becomes very tangible and real.
