Wir wollen auf jeden Fall wiederkommen! Es gibt noch so viel zu sehen, zum Beispiel Southsea Castle.
We definitely want to come back! There is still so much more to see, Southsea Castle, for example.
Aber heute sehen wir uns mal keine Burg an, sondern ein Museum, das sich mit neuerer Geschichte beschäftigt.
But today we won’t look at a castle for once, but rather at a museum which concerns itself with more recent history.
Nein, da ist mir kein falsches Foto reingerutscht … wir sind immer noch in England. Wir gehen heute in ein Museum, das sich alleine dem D-Day widmet. Also dem 6. Juni 1944, als die Alliierten in der Normandie landeten.
No, I did not get a wrong photo mixed up here … we are still in England. Today we will visit a museum that concerns itself purely with D-Day. Meaning, June 6, 1944 when the Allies landed in Normandy.
Wieder ein Ort, den wir sehr empfehlen können. Wusstet Ihr zum Beispiel, dass die BBC am 17. Mai 1942 im Auftrag der Regierung einen Aufruf startete, dass Leute ihre Urlaubsfotos und Postkarten einsenden sollten? Mit diesem Material sollten die lokalen Gegebenheiten – zum Beispiel in der Normandie – in Erfahrung gebracht werden. Man erwartete 10.000 Einsendungen – 30.000 kamen im ersten Schwung, insgesamt wurden es 10 MILLIONEN!
Once again a location that we can heartily recommend. Did you know for example, that on May 17, 1942 the BBC broadcast a request on behalf of the government, that people should send in their holiday photos and postcards? With this material, the local circumstances – of the Normandy, for example – should be found out. They expected 10.000 entries – 30.000 arrived in the first post, all in all they received 10 MILLIONS!
Die Menschen in der Region von Portsmouth wussten, dass etwas passieren würde, aber nicht was und wo. Hier in Southsea kontrolliert ein Soldat die Papiere eines Fahrradfahrers.
The people in the area of Portsmouth knew that something was about to happen, but they did not know what or when. Here in Southsea a soldier checks the identity of a cyclist.
Denn natürlich ließ sich nicht verstecken, dass da auf einmal solch eine Unmenge Soldaten waren. Allein die große Zahl an Amerikanern. Die sagten: wenn wir die Insel alle auf einmal verlassen, hebt sie sich um 6 Fuß! Hier seht Ihr alleine den Kartoffelverbrauch von 1944 in Tonnen pro Woche.
Because, naturally you could not hide that all of a sudden there was this huge count of soldiers. The large number of Americans alone. They said: if we leave the island all at once, it will rise six feet! Here you see just the amount of potatoes needed in 1944, in tons per week.
Für die Amerikaner gab es ein Info-Heftchen. Da stand zum Beispiel drin: „Die Briten wissen nicht, wie man eine gute Tasse Kaffee macht. Ihr wisst nicht, wie man eine gute Tasse Tee macht. Das gleicht sich aus.“
For the Americans a little information booklet was printed. In that you found for example: „The British don’t know how to make a good cup of coffee. You don’t know how to make a good cup of tea. It’s an even swap.
Hier seht Ihr einen Kompass, der in einem kleinen Knopf versteckt ist. Spezialkräfte, die in kleinen Gruppen im Feindgebiet operierten, hatten solche Ausrüstung.
Here you see a compass that is hidden in a little button. Special forces which operated in small groups behind enemy lines, had equipment such as this.
Nie zuvor waren Soldaten in solcher Zahl und mit soviel Ausrüstung an einer Küste gelandet – das musste geübt werden. Britische Truppen sollten amerikanische Sherman Panzer fahren – dazu gab es Anleitungsheftchen.
Never before had soldiers landed at a coast in such large numbers and with so much equipment – that had to be trained. British troups were meant to operate American Sherman tanks – for that they got instruction pamphlets.
Natürlich mussten Landkarten ausgeteilt werden … doch was, wenn die in die falschen Hände geraten? Falsche Namen! Daher liegen Portugal, Prag, Venedig und Georgetown auf einmal ganz nah beieinander.
Of course maps had to be handed out … but what about if they fall into the wrong hands? Wrong names! That is why here you suddenly find Portugal, Prague, Venice and Georgetown so close together.
Ja, und was hatten die Truppen dann so alles dabei, als es wirklich losging? Hier seht Ihr Amerikanische Soldaten mit ihren Gewehren in Plastiktüten – gegen das Seewasser.

Ein großes Problem bei der Überfahrt war Übelkeit, unten im Bild seht Ihr am Rand eine Spucktüte. Die Soldaten kriegten auch Tabletten dagegen (links oben), aber die halfen wenig. Für große Erheiterung sorgten die ausgegebenen Kondome … in die sollten Armbanduhren etc. gepackt werden, als Schutz gegen das Salzwasser.
One major problem during the crossing was seasickness, at the bottom of the next photo you see a vomit bag. The soldiers were also issued pills against the sickness (upper left), but they did not help really. Much amusement was caused by the condoms handed out … wrist watches and the like should be safely stored in those, secure from the saltwater.
Und dann gings los. Hier seht Ihr wie alles dann geplant war. Eine große Sorge bis zum Schluss: das Wetter.
And then it all got started. Here you see how things were planned. One great worry till the end: the weather.
Aus der Luft wurden zum Beispiel Brücken bombardiert, um die Deutschen aufzuhalten, hier in Saumur.
From the air, bridges were bombed, for example, to slow down the Germans, here in Saumur.
Und es gab auch verschiedene Ablenkungsmanöver, so wie diese Puppen. 500 „Ruperts“ wurden als falsche Fallschirmspringer abgeworfen, um den Feind zu verwirren.
And there were diversionary tactics, like these dummies. 500 „Ruperts“ were launched as fake parachutists, to confuse the enemy.
Am Ende der Ausstellung gibt es noch eine riesige Stickerei. 83 Meter über den zweiten Weltkrieg.
At the end of the exhibition there is a huge embroidery. 83 meters about WWII.
Wir sind dann am Wasser entlang in Richtung „historic dockyard“ (wo wir gestern waren) gewandert. Und da sind wir auf die „Royal Garrison Church“ aus dem Jahr 1212 gestoßen. 1941 wurde die Kirche stark zerstört – wie man sieht, fehlt das Dach. Doch der Altarraum ist noch überdacht.

Bei denen sieht man schon ganz klar, dass dies eine Kirche für Soldaten war.

Auch die Fahnen und Kissen zeigen das.

Wir waren gerade rechtzeitig gekommen … als wir mit unserer Besichtigung fertig waren, war es schon vier, da wird die alte Kirche zugesperrt. Also sind wir weiter … zum Spinnaker Tower.
We had arrived just in time … when we were done with our viewing of the church it was four already, that is when the old building gets locked up. So we walked on … to the Spinnaker Tower.
Das Ticket hatten wir schon gestern gekauft, in Verbindung mit unserem Besuch beim Mary Rose Museum. Der Turm ist 170m hoch, auf 100m ist die große Aussichtsplattform, die auch an einer Stelle begehbare Glasscheiben hat. (Schuhe ausziehen!)
The tickets we had bought yesterday already, in combination with our visit of the Mary Rose Museum. The tower is 170m high, at 100m there is the main viewing platform, which at one spot also has glass panels you can walk on. (Take of your shoes!)
Und heute war der perfekte Tag für diese Sehenswürdigkeit, die 2005 eröffnet wurde! Strahlender Sonnenschein und tiefblauer Himmel, wir hatten einen tollen Rundumblick.
And today was the perfect day for this sight which was first opened in 2005! Bright sunshine and a deep blue sky, we had a wonderful view all around.
