Ihr erinnert Euch an Fort Brockhurst? Das nur jeden zweiten Samstag im Monat auf hat? Naja, heute ist der richtige Samstag … Also sind wir pünktlich um zehn Uhr morgens hin – alles macht hier erst um zehn auf, wie es scheint … bis auf Fort Brockhurst: um elf!
You remember Fort Brockhurst? That only opens on the second Saturday of each mont? Well, today is the correct Saturday … So we went there right on time at ten in the morning – it seems that everything here does not open until ten … except for Fort Brockhurst: at eleven!
Was wir bisher gesehen haben, sieht nach einem recht kompakten Rundbau aus … aber als wir dan drinnen waren, haben wir gesehen, das die Anlage riesig ist!
What we had seen so far, looks like a small compact rotunda … but once we were finally inside, we saw that the whole complex is just huge!
Im Rundbau sind die Räume naturgemäß nicht rechteckig …
In the rotunda, naturally, the rooms are not square …
Brockhurst war nur eines von vielen Forts … die Gegend von und um Portsmouth war regelrecht gespickt damit, zur Verteidigung gen Westen, Norden und zum Wasser hin.
Brockhurst was just one of many forts … the region of and around Portsmouth was really covered with them, as a defence towards the west, the north and towards the water.
1858 wurde der Bau dieses Forts begonnen, 1862 war es fertig. Im Gebäudebogen unterhalb der Kanonen waren die Unterkünfte für die Soldaten.
1858 construction of this fort was started, in 1862 it was finished. In the row of buildings below the cannons were the accomodations for the soldiers.
Hier oben standen die schweren Kanonen. Nur leider waren sie Mitte der 1860er schon wieder veraltet.
Up here the large cannons were placed. Unfortunately, by the middle of the 1860s they were already obsolete.
Hier schliefen dann wohl die Soldaten …
And here supposedly, soldiers slept …
… und wir hatten keine Zeit zum Schlafen, wir mussten zum Flughafen! Bye, bye England, bis zum nächsten Mal!
