Heute steht als erstes ein Schlösschen auf dem Plan. Leider müssen wir Neustrelitz jetzt verlassen, das Hotel hatte nicht länger ein Zimmer für uns. Also machen wir die Heimreise in Etappen. Erster Stopp zum Übernachten: Schwerin. Aber das Schloss, das wir heute sehen wollen, ist das von Mirow. 20 Jahre wurde dieses etwas vergessene Kleinod restauriert und jetzt strahlt es in heller Pracht.
Today first of all a little castle is on our list. Unfortunately we will now have to leave Neustrelitz, the hotel did not have a room for us for any longer. So we decided to do the trip home in stages. First stop for the night will be: Schwerin. But the castle which we want to see today is the one from Mirow. For 20 years they restored this rather forgotten nugget and now it sparkles.
Natürlich ist der Besuch nur mit einer Gesichtsmaske erlaubt. Doch das ist weniger das Problem. Schwierig ist vielmehr, dass immer nur zwei Menschen gleichzeitig in einem Raum sein dürfen. Wir haben am Anfang gleich ein Paar vorgelassen, weil wir immer sehr langsam durch die Räume gehen. Das hat den beiden hinter uns nicht gepasst, die standen immer wie böse Geister in der offenen Zimmertür und haben uns finster angefunkelt.
Naturally the visit is only permitted while wearing face masks. But that is not really a problem. What is more difficult is that at any time no more than two people are allowed to be in one room. Right at the start we let a couple go ahead of us, because we always take our time walking through the rooms. And the two who came after us quite obviously did not like that, they always stood like evil spirits in the open doors and glowered at us.
Es gab nämlich durchaus eine Menge zu lesen. In den ersten Räumen wird der geschichtliche Kontext ausgeführt. Jeder Raum hat eine eigene Farbe, und die Geschichte des Schlosses wird sehr schön und detailliert dargelegt.
Because there was quite a lot to read. In the first few rooms they tell you about the historical context. For that, each room has its own colour, and the history of the castle is presented very nicely and in detail.
Dazu gibt es immer wieder kleine Engelchen, die die Geschichte humorvoll ironisch begleiten.
That is time and again accompanied by little angels who tell history with their own ironical humour.
Auch die Zitate, die zu lesen waren, waren durchaus unterhaltsam 🙂

Wir lernten, dass im 17. Jahrhundert um die Region Mecklenburg großer Streit entbrannte. Das übliche Spiel: Jeder wollte alle Macht und sämtlicher Reichtümer. In Hamburg – auf neutralem Boden – wurde dann am 18. März 1701 der Hamburger Vergleich geschlossen – die Geburt des neuen Herzogtums Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 behielt der juristische Vertrag seine Gültigkeit.
We learned that in the 17th century there was a lot of quarrelling regarding the region Mecklenburg. The usual game: Everybody wanted all power and every bit of wealth. In Hamburg – in neutral surroundings – the Hamburger Vergleich was signed on March 18th, 1701 – the birth of the new duchy Mecklenburg-Strelitz. This constitutional settlement stayed valid until the end of the monarchy 1918.
Aber zurück zum Schloss: Der Herzog Adolph Friedrich II. heiratete Christiane Aemilie Anthonie.
But back to the castle: The duke Adolph Friedrich II. married Christiane Aemilie Anthonie.
1708, drei Jahre später, starb er, und seine viel jüngere Gattin wurde mit 27 Jahren zur Witwe. Und so eine Frau kann ja nicht einfach irgendwo wohnen, also wurde 1709 angefangen, das Schloss Mirow für sie zu bauen.
1708, three years later, he died, and his much younger wife became a widow with only 27 years. And of course such a lady cannot live just anywhere, so in 1709 construction work on Castle Mirow was started for her.
Nach drei Jahren war das Schloss bereits fertiggestellt … und 1727 fiel es schon wieder auseinander. Wände und Fassaden mussten ausgetauscht oder ganz ersetzt werden.
After three years already, the construction of the castle was finished … and 1727 it all fell apart again. Walls and fronts had to be exchanged or to be replaced completely.
Nach dem Tod unserer Witwe übernahm die Schwiegertochter Elisabeth Albertine das Schloss und ab 1753 ließ sie viel im Stil des Rokoko umbauen.
After the death of our widow, her daughter-in-law Elisabeth Albertine took over the castle, and then, starting in 1753 she had much redone in the style of rococo.
Doch 1760 wurde sie sehr krank und zog zu ihrem Sohn. Danach ließ sich nie wieder ein Mitglied der Fürstenfamilie hier nieder.
But 1760 she fell very ill and moved in with her son. Afterwards never again did a member of the ducal family live here
Nach dem ersten Weltkrieg diente das Schloss als Heimatmuseum. Gegen Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges gab es hier eine Wehrmachtsdienststelle der Luftwaffe, und nach dem Krieg wurde das Gebäude als Kornspeicher genutzt.
After World War I the castle was used as a museum of local history. Towards the end of World War II they installed a Wehrmacht office of the air force, and after the war the building was utilized as a granary.
In den 50er Jahren zog hier ein „Landesaltersheim“ ein.
In the 50s, a „State Retirement Home“ moved in here.
Und heute dürfen wir das Schloss in all seiner Pracht besichtigen. Hier zum Beispiel das Audienzzimmer.
And today we are allowed to visit the castle in all its splendour. Here for example the parlour.

Die Tapeten waren auf jeden Fall sehenswert, wie Gemälde mit Ölfarben auf Leinwand gemalt.
The wallpapers were definitely worth seeing, like paintings, done with oil paints on canvas.
Und hier rekonstruiert: Diese textile Tapete wurde von Herzogin Elisabeth Albertine und ihren Hofdamen als Knötchenstickerei gefertigt.
And here, reconstructed: This textile wallpaper was crafted by duchess Elisabeth Albertine and her court ladies as French knot stitch embroidery.
Noch einen Blick auf den Festsaal, dann haben wir Euch hoffentlich genug Appetit gemacht, um Euch das Schlösschen selber anzusehen.

Gegenüber vom Schloss gibt es das Kavaliershaus, da gibt es auch eine Menge zu sehen, über Prinzessinnen, die Geschichte des Landstrichs, Düfte … aber das würde den Rahmen dieses Eintrags sprengen.
Opposite the castle there is also the Kavalierhaus, a separate building for staff and guests, where you also get to see a lot, about princesses, the history of the region, fragrances … but that would get to be just too much for this entry.
