Gut, dass wir gestern abend noch ein paar Fotos vom Schloss gemacht haben, solange das Licht noch gut war. Denn heute ist alles trüb und grau … es sieht nach Regen aus.
Good thing that yesterday we did take a few quick pictures of the castle, while the light was still good. Because today everything is grey and dull … it looks like rain.
Also nur ein paar Blicke von außen. In einem Teil des Schlosses sitzt seit 1990 der Landtag.
So just a few quick looks from the outside. In one part of the castle, the regional parliament has been sitting since 1990.
Der ganze Bau ist einfach gigantisch. Es gibt so viele Details zu entdecken. Der erste Schlossbau hier startete 1160, und was wir heute sehen, entstand bei einem Umbau zwischen 1843 und 1857.
The whole edifice is just titanic. There are so many details to discover. The first construction of a castle started here in 1160, and what we can see today is the result of a redesign between 1843 and 1857.

Wir haben dann unsere Eintrittskarten gekauft und mussten ein Weilchen warten, bis die Leute vor uns ein Stück weitergegangen waren. Eine Chance, Blicke in den Innenhof zu werfen.
We then bought our tickets and then had to wait for a while until the people ahead of us had moved on a bit. That gave us a chance to take some peaks into the courtyard.

Mehrfach hat sehr nettes Personal uns Zusatzinformationen gegeben, als sie merkten, dass wir Interesse hatten. Eine Weile wurden hier Kindergärtnerinnen ausgebildet. Dabei haben die Dekorationen hier und da einen Arm verloren. Es war ganz unterhaltsam, wie der Herr uns erzählte, dass eine Tafel beim Transport den einen Arm abschlug, der andere fiel einer Tür zum Opfer …
The first few rooms have not been restored yet, as we found out. Several times very friendly employees gave us additional information when they realized that we were interested in that. For a while female kindergarten workers were trained here. During that time the decorations lost an arm here and there. It was quite entertaining, how the gentleman told us that a blackboard knocked off one arm during transport, that the other fell victim to a door …
Das hat er uns erzählt. Und auch augenzwinkernd, dass damals leider keine Männer Zutritt hatten … Hier meinte er übrigens, stand früher ein Waschbecken, und der Boden wurde öfter mal nass.

Wir haben so viele wunderbare Räume gesehen! Und es gab so viel zum Anschauen. Die Decken zum Beispiel, immer wieder anders, immer wieder spektakulär:

Und auch die Böden! Hier sieht man ganz klar den Unterschied: hier wurde restauriert.
And the floors as well! Here you can very clearly see the difference: this has been restored.
Die Wände, die Möbel, die Türen … Hier sind wir in der „Roten Audienz“ mit Wandbespannung aus rotem Seidendamast.

Im Billardzimmer gibt es ein Stuckfries zu bewundern, das die ganze Decke umläuft und viel zu entdecken bereithält. Wir haben so ein bisschen gerätselt, was genau alles dargestellt ist.
In the Billard Room there is a stucco frieze to be admired, which runs all around the ceiling and there is lots to discover. We did wonder a bit what exactly is portrayed in the different scenes.

Aber es gab auch ganz andere Sachen zu sehen, zum Beispiel wurde uns ein Blick gewährt in das Heizsystem des Schlosses, hier im Thronsaal.
But there were also things to see of quite a different kind, for example: we got to take a peak at the heating system of the castle, here in the throne room.
Wenn der Ofen am Laufen ist, werden die schweren Metalltüren davor geschlossen und strahlen die Hitze ab.
When the oven is running, the heavy metal doors in front of it are closed and then give off the theat.

Hier gehen wir jetzt in die Ahnengalerie, die „präsentiert eine lückenlose Geschlechterfolge der Herzöge von Mecklenburg-Schwerin seit Verleihung der Herzogswürde 1348“.
Here now we stroll into the Ancestral Portrait Gallery, which „displays a complete line of succession of the dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin since the bestowal of dukedom in 1348“.
Dies hier in adretter Pose ist der allererste.

Die Bilder können der ganzen Pracht sowieso nicht gerecht werden. Dieses wandfüllende Bild hier hängt in einem der letzten Räume, durch die man geht – leider ohne irgendeine Zusatzinfo.
There is still so much more to see. But you will have to go and look for yourselves. Anyhow, the pictures cannot really live up to all the splendour. This painting which covers almost a whole wall hangs in one of the last rooms that you walk through – unfortunately without any additional information.
Wie wir uns das Gelände draußen ansehen wollten, hat es angefangen zu nieseln, aber nicht zu stark.
When we wanted to take a look at the area outside, it started to drizzle, but not too much.
Nicht nur das Schloss selber ist von außen wunderschön anzusehen.
Not only the castle itself is beautiful to look at.
Das Schloss liegt ja auf einer kleinen Insel … also hier der Vogel des Tages.

Zurück zum Schloss: Die Schlosskirche war leider nicht für Besichtigungen geöffnet, schade, die Bilder im Internet hatten uns neugierig gemacht.

Hier treffen wir noch einmal auf das Petermännchen, das wir schon im Schloss auf einer bemalten Schranktür gesehen haben. Es handelt sich um den Schlossgeist von Schwerin, der uns aber nicht behelligt hat.
Here we once again run into the Petermännchen („manikin Peter“), which we had already seen inside the castle on a painted door of a wardrobe. It is the ghost of the castle of Schwerin, but he did not bother us.

But unfortunately the rain got heavier …
