So, wir sind also in Lüneburg. Eigentlich wollten wir die ganze Zeit in Neustrelitz bleiben, doch das Hotel hatte nur bis Freitag ein Zimmer für uns. Also haben wir die Heimfahrt gedrittelt. Unser erster Zwischenstopp war ja Schwerin gestern am Samstag, heute also Lüneburg.
Okay, so now we are in Lüneburg. Originally we had planned to stay in Neustrelitz for the whole trip, but the hotel could only offer us a room until Friday. So we split our trip back home into thirds. Our first stopover was Schwerin on the Saturday yesterday, today now Lüneburg.
Ja, die drei in einem Brunnen vor dem Hotel haben Spaß im Wasser, aber wir hoffen, dass es trocken bleiben wird. Wobei der Wetterbericht meinte, es wird heute noch Regen kommen – in der Nacht hatte es auch schon geregnet. Also schwimmen wir jetzt schnell mal los … äh … laufen natürlich!
Yes, these three in a fountain in front of the hotel are having fun in the water, but we very much hope that it will stay dry. Even though the weather forecast predicted that it will rain today – and during the night it had rained already. So let us quickly get swimming … äh … get going, of course!

And here our original destination: the town hall. Still at home in Bremen already we had bought two tickets for a guided tour – but then we got a call that because of Covid-19 no visits are permitted yet. So now we have a coupon …
Also sehen wir uns den Bau nur von außen an. Falls Euch der Mond über der Uhr auffällt: Es scheint, dass im 15. Jahrhundert ein „Luna-Wahn“ ausbrach. Man war sich ganz sicher, dass der Name der Stadt auf Julius Caesar zurückginge, der habe „die ansehnliche Burg der Stadt des Mondes errichtet“. – Nur war Caesar nie hier … Naja, auf jeden Fall sind viele Monde in der Stadt zu finden.
So we will just look at the building from the outside. In case you notice the moon above the clock: It seems that in the 15th century a „luna-craze“ broke out. People were convinced that the name of the city traces back to Julius Cesar, he was supposed to „have erected the comely caslte of the city of the moon“. – But Cesar had never been here … Oh well, in any case, there are a lot of moons to be found in the town.

Hier ein Blick von hinten – an das Rathaus schließt sich ein ganzer Komplex von Gebäuden an, bis auf eine Länge von 142m.

Also gehen wir weiter … Es gibt in Lüneburg so viele schöne alte Gebäude. Auch immer mal wieder ein bisschen „schief“.
So we walk on … In Lüneburg you can find so many gorgeous old buildings. Also at times a bit „crooked“.
Und es gibt jede Menge kleine Details zu entdecken.
And there are so many little details to discover.
Immer wieder ist uns aufgefallen, dass die Wappen überall schräg abgebildet sind. Das sollte zeigen, dass Lüneburg eine friedfertige Stadt war – weil man seinen Schild gesenkt hielt, wenn man in friedlicher Absicht kam.
Again and again we noticed, that the crests all around are shown in an inclined fashion. That was to show that Lüneburg was a peaceable city – because you kept your shield down when you approached with peaceful intent.
Eine Straße, die in jedem Reiseführer erwähnt wird, ist „Auf dem Meere“. Hier sind auch lauter schöne Fassaden zu sehen, oft wieder etwas schief.
One street that is mentioned in every travel guide is „Auf dem Meer“ („atop the ocean“). Here again there are lots of pretty fronts to see, again a bit crooked here and there.
Unheimlich schön: vor vielen der Häuser stehen Rosenbüsche.
Incredibly beautiful: in front of many of the houses there are rose bushes.
Auch die Pflasterung der Straßen oder hier die Treppe zu einer Kirche ist oft sehenswert.
The paving of the streets or here the steps to a church is also often worth taking a look at.

Lüneburg ist die Salzstadt im Norden. 1000 Jahre bestimmte das Salz die Geschichte dieser Stadt. Erst 1980 schloss das Salzwerk seine Pforten. Damit all diese Geschichte nicht verloren geht, wurde am Ort der alten Produktionsstätte das Deutsche Salzmuseum eröffnet. Unsere nächste Station.
Lüneburg is the salt city of the North. For 1000 years the salt determined the history of this town. Not until 1980 did the saline close its doors. To ensure that all this history does not get lost, the German Salt Museum was opened at the site of the production facility. Our next destination.
Es ist Lüneburgs jüngstes Museum mit besonderen Ausstellungsstücken: dem ältesten (Steinsalz, ca. 230 Mio. Jahre), dem kleinsten (Salzkristalle unter dem Mikroskop), dem größten (Siedepfanne 8m x 20m), dem schwersten (Steinsalzbrocken, ca. 6t – siehe Foto unten) und dem mit dem weitesten Weg bis in die Ausstellung (Salzkristalle aus Namibia).
It is Lüneburg’s youngest museum with some special exhibits: the oldest (rock salt, ca. 230 million years), the smallest (salt crystals under the microscope), the largest (scratch pan 8m x 20m), the heaviest (rock salt boulder, ca. 6t – see photo below) and those with the farthest distance to travel to this exhibitions (salt crystals from Namibia).

Salt deposits in Northern Germany1791 entwickelte der französische Chemiker und Erfinder Nicolas Leblanc ein technisches Verfahren, um aus Kochsalz, Schwefelsäure, Kalk und Kohle künstlich Soda herzustellen.
1791 the French chemist and inventor Nicolas Leblanc developed a technical procedure to fabricate synthetic soda out of common salt, sulphuric acid, lime and coal.
Salz war auch als Zahlungsmittel lange Zeit sehr geschätzt. Das hat sich auch in vielen Worten niedergeschlagen. Zum Beispiel bekamen die römischen Soldaten und Beamten das „Salarium“, eine Ration Salz, auf Reisen. Daher kommt auch das englische „Salary“. Hier seht Ihr „Amole“, Salzgeld aus Äthiopien.
Salt was also highly valued as a matter of payment for a long time. That is also reflected in many words. Es gibt eine Unmenge zu sehen und zu lernen. Ganz klar ein weiterer Ort, den wir Euch ans Herz legen. Und damit verlassen wir das Museum mit einem letzten Blick auf ein Jugendstil Salzfass aus Zinn.
There is loads to see and to learn. Very clearly this is another location that we can highly recommend. And with that we leave the museum, with a last look at a Jugendstil salt drum made from tin.
Und jetzt? Es ist Sonntag … also konnten wir in den Läden nichts kaufen …
And now? It is Sunday … so we could not buy anything in the shops …
Deswegen haben wir gestern schon Vorsorge getroffen. Also laufen wir wieder los.

Ja, wir waren in einem indischen Restaurant, in demselben, in dem wir auch gestern schon waren.
Yes, we were in an Indian restaurant, in the same one where we had eaten yesterday already.
Gestern hatte es uns schon so gut geschmeckt … schon alleine die Beilagen: das Naan, die Papadams und die hier. Die kannten wir noch nicht – laut Internet „Bhatura“.
Yesterday already we had so liked the food … even just the extras: the naan, the poppadoms and these here. Those we had not known before – according to the web „bhatura“.
Wir haben vier Hauptgerichte probiert und waren von allen begeistert. Aber heute wusste ich endlich, was das leckerste von allen ist: Mango Chicken!!
We have tried four main courses and loved all of them. But today finally I knew which one of them is the most tasty: mango chicken!!
Und da hat der Kellner mir zum Abschied doch auch noch eine Packung Mangosaft geschenkt! – Wir werden wiederkommen, und wenn von Euch mal jemand in Lüneburg ist: es lohnt sich!
And then the waiter gave me a carton of mango juice when we said good-bye! – We will come back, and if ever one of you should come to Lüneburg: it is well worth it!
So, und dann gings zurück nach Hause – damit war unser Kurzurlaub zu Ende.
Okay, and then we went back home – with that, our short vacation came to an end.
