Heute haben wir wieder Großes vor! Doch zuerst:

Es ist toll, hier sind an so vielen Stellen Recyclingboxen aufgestellt. Nicht in irgendeiner vergessenen, schmuddeligen Ecke, sondern ganz mitten drin hübsch auf großen Verkehrsinseln oder am Gehweg.
It is great, here you find recycling bins at so many places. Not in some forgotten grubby corner, but right in the middle, nicely situated on a large traffic island or on the sidewalk.
Ha! Ihr denkt Euch: die wollen zum Schwimmbad! … Fast! Zum Parkplatz davor.
Ha! You’re thinking: they are on their way to the swimming pool! … Almost! Rather: to the parking lot in front.
Man beachte die Markierungen: weiß und blau. Unsere Vermieterin hat uns den Tipp gegeben. Dieser Parkplatz ist nicht weit von der Wohnung, aber er kostet nichts – auf den „weißen“ Parkplätzen. Denn in der Altstadt sind Parkplätze rar und teuer!
Pay attention to the markings: white and blue. Our landlady gave us this tipp. This parking lot is not far from the apartment, but parking here is for free – on the „white“ spaces. For in the old part of town the parking spaces are rare and expensive!
Wie Ihr sehen könnt, der Wagen sieht blitzsauber aus – gut, denn da, wo wir hinwollen, ist die Autowäsche untersagt!
As you can see, the car looks spick and span – and that is a good thing, because where we are going, washing the car is not permitted!
Und wo wollen wir hin? Nach Neuf-Brisach, gebaut in den letzten Jahren der Herrschaft von Ludwig XIV. als Teil der Befestigung der Landesgrenzen. Am 6. September 1698 unterzeichnete der König das Bauprojekt des Festungsbauers Vauban.
And where exactly are we going? To Neuf-Brisach, built during the last years of Louis XIV as part of the fortification of the nation’s borders. On September 6, 1689 the king signed the building project of the military engineer Vauban.
Um das erforderliche Baumaterial heranzuschaffen, wurde sogar ein Kanal gebaut, der heißt jetzt auch Canal de Vauban. Errichtet wurde aus dem Nichts eine Festungsstadt mit vier Toren und endlos vielen Mauern und Gräben. Die Zwischenwälle und Außenwerke entsprechen einer Länge von 17km.
To transport the building materials needed, they even dug a canal, which these days is called Canal de Vauban. Out of nothing, a fortress town was erected, with four gates and an endless number of walls and moats. The connecting walls and outer earthworks total 17km in length.
Hier ein Eindruck von dem riesigen Gelände, das um die Stadt herum für all die Befestigungsanlagen genutzt wurde.

Man kann die Gräben einmal um die Stadt herum komplett ablaufen. Und da gibt es eine Menge zu entdecken!

Bildschön: Jede Ecke des einen Walls wird durch ein, aus gelbem Stein bestehendes, abgekragtes Wappen mit Trophäen geziert. Das dient nicht nur dem Schmuck, sondern sorgt auch dafür, dass eventuell desertierende Soldaten da nicht einfach herunterklettern konnten.
Gorgeous: Each corner of the one rampart is decorated with a sloping coat-of-arms with trophies, made of yellow stone. That was not just ornamentation, but this was also intended so that would-be deserting soldiers could not simply climb down there.
In der Mitte war usprünglich die königliche Fleur-de-Lis zu sehen, doch während der französischen Revolution wurden die Lilien herausgemeißelt.
In the middle one could originally see the royal fleur-de-lis, but the lilies were chiselled out during the French Revolution.
Hab ich schon erwähnt, dass wir gelaufen, gelaufen, gelaufen sind?

Und damit Ihr Euch ein Bild machen könnt, wie das alles aussieht: In der Mitte die Stadt, alle Straßen sind rechtwinklig um einen zentralen Platz angelegt, und das Ganze ist als Achteck angelegt. And so that you can get an impression of what all this looks like: In the middle is the town, all streets are arranged at right angles, around a central square, and the whole is laid out as an octagon. The access roads to the gates all have a sharp bend to slow down any potential attacks.
Im Festungsgraben gibt es eine Freiluftausstellung.
In the moat you can see an open air exhibition.

Das macht die Wanderung entlang der Mauern ganz spannend. Sonst würde man den Überblick verlieren, wo man gerade ist …
That makes the walk along the walls quite interesting. Otherwise you would lose track of where exactly you are at any moment …

Unter dem einen Wall hindurch gibt es einen Tunnel, damit die Soldaten einen schnellen und geschützten Zugang zum zweiten Wallgraben haben.
Below the one rampart, there is a tunnel, so that the soldiers have a rapid and protected access to the second set of wall ditches.
Und da sind wir schon. Diese Anlage ist einfach riesig!
And here we are now. This whole structure is just huge!
Nicht nur wir sind hier unterwegs – ganz ungewollt haben wir einen Mäusebussard aufgeschreckt.
Not just we are out and about – without meaning to, we startled a common buzzard.
Aber zurück zu den Mauern: Jetzt sind wir bei einem der „Halbmonde“, die die äußerste Verteidigungslinie bilden.
But back to the walls: Now we have reached one of the „half-moons“, which form the outermost line of defence.
Also, im Detail: 1, 2, 3 sind die Gräben, 11 ist der Hauptwall, der die Stadt umgibt. Der wird geschützt durch die Kontergarden (7) und die Zangenwerke (8). Die 9 ist einer der „Halbmonde“.
Okay, in detail: 1, 2, 3 are the moats, 11 is the main rampart that surrounds the town. This is protected by the counterguards (7) and the pincer earthworks (8). The 9 is one of the „half-moons“.
Und wir haben das Belforter Tor erreicht.
And we have reached the Belforter gate.
Davor steht wieder ein Kunstwerk. Dieses ist von Helmut Lutz, einem Maler und Bildhauer aus Alt-Breisach.
In front of it there is once again a piece of art. Thi one is by Helmut Lutz, a painter and sculptor from Alt-Breisach.
„Europa Sonore“ – der „Europaklang“ ist der dritte Teil einer Trilogie. Die anderen beiden Werke stehen in Breisach und St. Louis.
„Europa Sonore“ – the „Europe Sound“ is the third part of a trilogy. The other two oevres are situated in Breisach and St. Louis.
Vorhin hatten wir schon einen Bären, hier jetzt ein Löwe mit prachtvollen Zähnen. Solche Figuren des elsässer Bildhauers Jean-Paul Schwindy sind mehrfach zu finden, es gibt auch einen Elefanten und ein Nashorn.
Earlier we already had a bear, here now a lion with gorgeous teeth. Such figures of the Alsation sculptorJean-Paul Schwindy can be found at different spots, there are also a rhinoceros and an elephant.
Jetzt ist es aber Zeit, sich auch mal anzusehen, was innerhalb der Mauern zu finden ist.
But now it is time to also take a look at what can be found inside all these walls.
Auch hier noch weitere Befestigungsanlagen, zum Beispiel: Eine Hohltraverse zum Einstellen von zwei Geschützen.
Hier once again further fortifications, for example: A hollow traverse to store two cannons.
Zur Stadt hin sind die Anlagen auch oft sehr schön bepflanzt.
Towards the town the fortifications are often nicely adorned with plants.
In der Stadt selber gab es nicht so arg viel zu sehen.
Inside of the town there was not all that much to see.
1753 wurde das Rathaus ganz aus Stein errichtet, davor stand hier ein Gebäude aus Backstein und Holz.
1753 the town hall which consists entirely of stone, was erected. Before that there was a building made of brick and timber.
Leider hat das Wetter nicht so mitgespielt, es fing an zu nieseln, und wir waren sowieso k.o. nach all der Lauferei. Also gabs was zu essen. Lecker wars, und wir hatten mit dem Wirt des „Hani“ interessante und höchst politische Gespräche!
Unfortunately the weather did not play along all that well, it started to drizzle, and we were, anyhow, done in, after all that walking. So it was time for some food. It was yummy, and we had an interesting and highly political talk with the innkeeper of the „Hani“!
Danach wären wir wieder fit gewesen, doch leider war das Vauban-Museum wegen Reparaturen geschlossen. Und das MAUSA, in dem Straßenkunst zu sehen wäre, war wegen Corona zu … 🙁
Afterwards we would have been fit again, but unfortunately the Vauban museum was closed for repairs. And the MAUSA, in which street art is shown, was shut due to Corona … 🙁
Also nehmen wir das nächste Stadttor …
So we take the next gate out of town …
… und laufen das letzte Viertel um den Ort noch ab.
… and walk that last quarter around the site.
Schön wars, sehr sehenswert – und wir wollen uns das auf jeden Fall nochmal bei besserem Wetter ansehen.
It was great, very worth visiting – and we definitely want to come back to see all this in better weather conditions.
