So, heute gehts zum Toba Inlet. Früh morgens haben wir uns getroffen, dann gabs erst mal Diskussionen, denn es wurde wohl starker Wind und Seegang vorausgesagt. Eine Teilnehmerin ist dann auch lieber nicht mitgefahren, aber der Rest von uns (10 Leute) wollten es probieren.
Okay, today we will go to Toba Inlet. Early in the morning we met, and then there was some debate first, because it seems the prediction said strong winds and high seas. One lady then opted to rather not join on the ride, but the rest of us (10 people) decided to give it a try.
Das Meer war dann gar nicht so schlimm, und unser Skipper wusste auch, wie er die schlimmsten Wellen vermeidet. Aber der Himmel war schon sehr grau …
The sea was then not all that bad, and our skipper really knew how to avoid the worst waves. But the sky was really very grey …
Aber wir sind an etlichen Inseln recht nahe vorbeigekommen, da kam dann auch mal ein bisschen Grün ins Spiel.
But we passed quite close to several islands, and then we also got glimpses of some green.
Immer wieder haben wir Wasserfälle entdeckt.
Time and again we spotted waterfalls.
Aber generell wirkte die Szenerie schon eher düster. Auf den Gipfeln war Schnee zu entdecken … gut, dass wir uns warm angezogen haben!
But on the whole the scenery seemed rather gloomy. On the mountaintops you could see snow … good thing that we dressed warmly!
Hier und da war ein Häuschen zu entdecken, aber das war eher die Ausnahme.
Here and there you could spot a cottage, but that was rather the exception.
Die meiste Zeit sahen wir Bäume und Felsen. Und zweimal einen Weißkopfseeadler!
Most of the time we saw trees and rocks. And twice we spotted a bald eagle!
Und dann kamen wir an: Toba Inlet. Hier hat Stuart uns in Empfang genommen und dann die Führung übernommen. Er gehört zu den Klahoose First Nation, die auch das Holz nutzen, wie man sieht …
And then we arrived: Toba Inlet. Stuart welcomed us and then took over the tour. He belongs to the Klahoose First Nation, who also do logging as you can see …

Do you know that feeling of frustration when you are about to take a photo and just then somebody walks through your picture? Well …
Wir sind hier, um Grizzlybären zu sehen! Es gibt hier sechs „Towers“, kleine überdachte Plattformen, von denen man das Wasser überblicken kann. Und wenn man Glück hat, sieht man einen Bären, wie er sich mit Lachsen den Bauch vollschlägt.
We are here to see grizzly bears! They have six „towers“ here, small roofed platforms from which you can overlook the water. And when you are lucky, you see a bear as it is stuffing itself with salmon.
Zwischendrin hat er sich dann eine Pause gegönnt, man wird ja doch sehr nass, von oben und unten …
In between it took a break, after all, you get very, very wet, from above and from below …
Dann hat er Ausschau nach dem nächsten Fisch gehalten.
Then it kept an eye out for the next fish.
Und nach einem Fehlversuch hat es auch geklappt:
And after one miss, it did work out:
Zuerst wird die Fischhaut abgezogen, die enthält viel Fett und andere Nährstoffe. Lecker!
First the fish is skinned, because that part contains a lot of fat and other nutrients. Yummy!
Dann hat er noch einmal in unsere Richtung geschaut …
Then it looked our way one last time …
… und hat sich getrollt.
… and took off.
Aber nicht nur die Bären bedienen sich an den Lachsen. Wir haben auch einen Geier gesehen.
But not only the bears gorge themselves on salmon. We also saw a vulture.
Wir sind dann zum nächsten Ausguck, da war ein Bär ganz friedlich am Schlafen.
We then went to the next lookout, where there was a bear sleeping peacefully.
Irgendwann hat er sich immerhin mal gekratzt, sonst hätte man meinen können, das ist gar kein echter Bär.
After a while it scratched itself. Good thing, otherwises one might have thought, it was not a true bear at all.
Wir hatten auf die Weise die Muße, die Fische genauer zu beobachten.
That way we had some time to observe the salmon a bit more closely.
Auch an Land war viel Fisch zu sehen …
On land you could also see much fish …
Attraktiver ist da schon ein Blick in die Gegend. Der Regenwald voller Moos ist einfach wunderschön.
Much more attractive: a glimpse of the surroundings. The rainforest with all that moss is just beautiful.
Wir sind der Reihe nach alle Plattformen abgefahren, aber nirgends war noch ein Bär zu sehen … also sind wir zur zweiten zurück, als der Schläfer wieder wach war.
We then checked out all the other platforms one by one, but nowhere did we spot another bear … so we went back to the second one when the sleeper was awake once again.
Aufmerksam hat er das Wasser beobachtet und dann einen Fisch erwischt.
Intently it watched the water, and then caught a fish.
Die Möwe hätte wohl auch Appetit …
The seagull might not mind a bite …
Toll wars! Jetzt geht es zurück zum Boot. Unterwegs haben wir angehalten. Hier ist 2008 ein kleines Flugzeug abgestürzt, das Arbeiter an Bord hatte, die an einem Wasserkraftwerk mitarbeiteten, das hier gebaut wird. Sieben der acht Menschen an Bord starben. Ihnen zu Ehren wurde dieser Totempfahl errichtet.
It was a great trip! And now we drive back to the boat. On the way we stopped. Here a small plane crashed in 2008, which had carried workers employed in a hydroelectric plant which is being built here. Seven of the eight people on board died. And to honour them, this totem pole was errected.
Auf dem Boot gabs dann ein sehr spätes Mittagessen. Die Rückfahrt war auch wieder recht ruhig, unser Kapitän hat uns sicher durch den Regen gefahren. Einen kleinen Abstecher haben wir gemacht zu diesem Wasserfall, der wohl der größte in der Region ist.
On the boat then we had a very late lunch. The ride back was once again quite calm, our captain led us safely through the rain. We made one small detour to this waterfall which we were told is the largest one in the area.
Und dann auf einmal der Ruf: Delfine!
And then all of a sudden a cry: dolphins!
Das muss eine große Gruppe gewesen sein, der Skipper meinte, so 40 Weißseitendelfine.
That must have been a large group, our skipper guessed it was 40 Atlantic white-sided dolphins.
Was für ein Abschluss! Damit gehts jetzt zurück nach Campbell River.
What a finale! And with that we will now travel back to Campbell River.
Da gibts dann einen warmen Tee, womit wir diesen grauen Tag beschließen werden.
There we will have a nice warm tea, with which to finish this grey day.
