Nachdem der Beginn unseres Kanada-Urlaubs ja nicht so lief wie geplant, mit Whale Watching am ersten Tag, von Campbell River aus, wollen wir es heute von Nanaimo aus versuchen. Und schon beim Parkplatz, den wir gefunden haben, ist eine Wandmalerei zu sehen, die einen gleich in die richtige Stimmung bringt!
Since the start of our Canada vacation did not work out as planned after all, with a whale watching tour on day one from Campbell River, we will now try this from Nanaimo. And already at the parking lot that we found, there is a mural to discover, which really sets the mood!
Wir hatten noch ein wenig Zeit, also sind wir am Hafen herumgeschlendert.
We had a bit of extra time, so we strolled around along the harbour.
Das Wetter ist okay, hoffentlich bleibt es so!
The weather is okay, we hope it will stay that way!
Im Wasser haben wir eine Qualle und etliche Seesterne gesehen.
In the water we spotted a jellyfish and several starfish.
Und dann gings los! Wir waren 12, 10 Touristen, Rebecca unser Guide und Sarah, die Kapitänin.
And then we got going! We were 12, 10 tourists, Rebecca our guide and Sarah, the skipper.
Zuerst sind wir an einer Insel vorbei, wo es viele Stellersche Seelöwen gab.
First we passed an island where there were a lot of Steller sea lions.
Auf dem Felsen links ist wohl die Zahnarztpraxis. Bitte weit öffnen – ah, ja, zwo eins o.B. …
On the rock on the left is where the dentist’s office is, it seems. Open wide please – oh, yes, 21 all fine …
Und dann der erste Buckelwal. Weit weg, und wir haben nur kurz die Rückenflosse gesehen, aber aufregend war es trotzdem.
And then the first humpback whale. Far off, and we only saw the dorsal fin for a short time, but it was exciting nonetheless.
Als erstes sieht man immer, wie der Wal bläst …
First thing you see is always when the whale blows …
Dann kommt immer mehr Rücken aus dem Wasser, die Rückenflosse … und manchmal, wenn man Glück hat, auch der Schwanz.
Then more and more of the back comes out of the water, the dorsal fin … and sometimes, when you are lucky, also the tail.
Rebecca hat einen Ordner dabei, in dem sie nachschaut, wen wir da vor uns haben: Corona. Den Namen hat das Weibchen natürlich vor der Pandemie erhalten …
Rebecca has a binder in which she can look up who we have spotted there in front of us: Corona. Of course this female got the name before the pandemic …
Wir haben viel Abstand gehalten, aber wenn der Wal von selber näher kommt, hat niemand etwas dagegen 🙂
We kept a lot of distance, but if the whale comes closer on its own accord, nobody is complaining 🙂
Da haben wir dann auch das Blasloch sehr schön sehen können.
We then could also very nicely see the blowhole.
Oh, und Corona hat da etwas am Schwanz …
Oh, and Corona has something on her tail …
Wir lernen immer mehr. Hier sieht man den „Fußabdruck“, den ein Wal hinterlässt, wenn er wieder untergetaucht ist.
We learn more and more. Here you can see the „footprint“ that a whale leaves behind once it has dived again.
Corona hat uns lange zusehen lassen – sie ist so ein Sonnenschein! Kein Wunder, dass es da auch eine Art Regenbogen gibt.
Corona let us watch for a long time – she is such a sunshine! No wonder that then we also saw a kind of rainbow.
Aber irgendwann sind wir weitergezogen. Und der zweite Buckelwal, den wir gesehen haben, hat „Belly rolls“ gemacht, so dass wir die Brustflosse sehen konnten!
But then finally we moved on. And the second humpback whale that we saw, did „belly rolls“, so that we could see the pectoral fin!
Er ist auch immer wieder „schräg“ abgetaucht.
It also time and again dove „crookedly“.
Aber als hätte er gewusst, dass wir alle die Schwanzflosse in ihrer ganzen Pracht sehen wollen …
But then, as if it knew that we all want to see its tail in all its glory …
Nachtrag: Übrigens haben wir zurück in Deutschland beim Stöbern auf der Website von Vancouver Island Whale Watch herausgefunden, dass dieser zweite Wal ein noch unbekannter war. Er hat dann die Kennung BCZ0312 erhalten.
Addendum: By the way, back home in Germany, when surfing the web and perusing the site of Vancouver Island Whale Watch, we found out that this second whale was one that was hitherto unknown. It then got the ID BCZ0312.
Ach ja, was war das toll!!! Doch irgendwann war es Zeit zur Rückfahrt. Immerhin haben wir auch noch Seehunde gesehen.
Oh well, it was magnificent!!! But then it was time for the ride back. But on that we got to see Harbour seals.
Und danach gings zurück in unser schickes Hotel …
And then we went back to our posh hotel …
… wo wir sehr lecker zu Abend gegessen haben.
… where we had a really scrumptious dinner.
