Tja, heute müssen wir unser schönes Hotel in Nanaimo verlassen. Wir verabschieden uns bei Barkley, dem Duty Manager – den man übrigens explizit NICHT füttern soll!
Well, today we have to leave our nice hotel in Nanaimo. We say goodbye to Barkley, the duty manager – whom, by the way, one is explicitly asked NOT to feed!
Wir hätten ja gerne auch das Restaurant und die Bar noch länger genossen. Hier gibt es eine Whisky-Auswahl, die wirklich ihresgleichen sucht!
We also would have liked to enjoy the restaurant and the bar for a while longer. Here they have a whisky selection which you will not easily find elsewhere!
Heute geht es an die Westküste von Vancouver Island. Den hier und seinen Kumpanen haben wir zufällig gesehen.
Today we travel to the West coast of Vancouver Island. This guy here and his buddy we saw just by chance.
Kein Wunder, dass der so rostig ist … heute sieht das Wetter nicht sehr vielversprechend aus.
No wonder that he is so rusty … today the weather does not look very promising.
Ehrlich gesagt, es war sogar richtig mies. Es hat dauernd geschüttet. Dabei kommen dann ganz tolle Fotos heraus …
To be honest, it was really, really bad. It kept on raining like crazy. And in such conditions you get really great photos …
Dabei hätte es eine Menge zu sehen gegeben. Bei trockenem Wetter hätten wir sicher etliche Male angehalten und uns die Gegend angesehen. Denn die Straße ist auf der einen Seite manchmal von Felsen begrenzt …
But there would have been so much to see! If the weather had been dry, we would certainly have stopped a few times and explored the area. For, the road is sometimes bordered by rocks on the one side …
… und auf der anderen Seite von einem See.
… and by a lake on the other one.
Fest geplant hatten wir eigentlich einen Ausflug zu „Cathedral Grove“, einem sehr bekannten und wohl auch sehr beliebten Park. Trotz des Wetters hätten wir nicht mal einen Parkplatz gekriegt! Außerdem darf man nur in eine Richtung gehen (wegen Corona), also kann man auch nicht nur einen Teil des Wanderweges ausprobieren …
Originally we had definitely planned an excursion to „Cathedral Grove“, a well-known and obviously also well liked park. We would not even have gotten a parking spot, notwithstanding the weather! Furthermore you are only allowed to walk in one direction (because of Corona), so you can not even just try out a short section of the hike …
Aber wir hatten noch einen zweiten Kandidaten auf unserer Liste: Little Qualicum Falls. Und hier war deutlich weniger los!
But we had a second candidate on our list: Little Qualicum Falls. And here there were way less people around!
Außerdem war das Wetter gnädig: als wir hier ankamen, ließ der Regen deutlich nach.
Furthermore the weather played along: when we got here, the rain eased up considerably.
Und mit weniger Wasser von oben kann man viel besser das Wasser unten genießen.
And with less water from above you can so much better enjoy the water below.

Man läuft immer am Wasser entlang, das sich durch die Landschaft schlängelt. – Immer wieder schön anzusehen!
You always walk alongside the waterways, which meander through the landscape. – Time and again great views!
Trotz Nässe haben wir aber nicht versäumt, auch wieder tolle Pilze zu entdecken …
Even though it was so wet, we did not fail to once again discover interesting mushrooms …
Doch jetzt wird der Regen wieder stärker, wir fahren lieber weiter, bevor wir klitschnass werden!!
But now the rain gets worse again, so we rather get back on the road, before we get totally soaked!
(und es wurde zunehmend schwierig, aus dem Auto heraus zu fotografieren ohne die Scheibenwischer im Bild zu haben …)
(and it got progressively more difficult to take photos from inside the car without having the windshield wipers in the picture …)
Aber ich wollte doch einfangen, wie wild die Wolken unterwegs waren …
But I really wanted to catch this, how the clouds hover menacingly …
Dann kam die Baustelle. Vor der waren wir schon gewarnt worden, denn normalerweise ist hier alles gesperrt von 5 bis 7 und 11 bis 15Uhr. Und dazwischen wird immer nur zur vollen Stunde mal der Verkehr durchgelassen, erst in eine Richtung, dann die andere … Aber wir sind hier am Thanksgiving Wochenende unterwegs, da gibt es die Komplettsperrungen nicht.
Then we got to the constructoin site. We had been warned of that, because usually traffic is blocked between 5 and 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. And between those times cars are let through only at the top of the hour, first in one direction, then in the other … But we are traveling through here on the Thanksgiving weekend, on which those complete traffic blocks were canceled.
Ja, und dann waren wir endlich in Ucluelet, in unserer süßen kleinen Hütte.
Yes, and then we were finally in Ucluelet, in our cute little cottage.
Oben unter dem Dach ist das Schlafzimmer. Und auf der Veranda … aber dazu mehr im nächsten Eintrag!
