Zuerst machen wir den „Leuchtturm-Ring“. Ein Krebsfischer, genannt „Oyster Jim“ hat 1988 beschlossen, dass die Schönheit der Küste von Ucluelet den Leuten zugänglich gemacht werden sollte.
First we take the „Lighthouse Loop“. A shellfish farmer, called „Oyster Jim“ decided in 1988 that the beauty of the Ucluelet coastline should be made accessible for everybody.
Die vorgeschlagene Route ging über Privatland, über Stadt-, Provinz- und Bundesbesitz. Aber er hat sich nicht abschrecken lassen.
The proposed route crossed land owned by private, municipal, provincial and federal parties. But he was undeterred by that.
So wie wir uns von der Kälte nicht abhalten lassen!
Just like we did not let the cold keep us from hiking!
Der Weg ist sehr schön angelegt, immer wieder gibt es kleine Abstecher näher zum Wasser. Da hat man dann natürlich viele schöne Ausblicke.
The path is very nicely laid out, time and again there are little paths a bit closer to the water. There of course you always have great views.
Dann geht es wieder ein Stück weiter auf dem Hauptweg.
Then you walk on again for a bit on the main path.
An den Bäumen kann man sehen, dass das Wachsen hier nicht so einfach ist: wenig Wurzeltiefe, viel Wind und Trockenheit im Sommer.
Looking at the trees you can see that growing is not that easy here: the roots cannot go very deep, there is much wind, and dry weather in the summer.
Die Aussichtspunkte sind mit Sitzbänken ausgestattet, da kann man schön die Atmosphäre genießen. – Wir waren ja mal wieder früh dran, deswegen war der Parkplatz ganz leer gewesen, wir waren recht alleine. Bis auf dieses eine Pärchen, das wohl mit Ausblick frühstücken wollte und sich partout nicht entscheiden konnte, wo sie jetzt mal sitzen bleiben wollen …
The lookouts all had benches on offer, so you can wonderfully enjoy the atmosphere. – We were here once again bright and early, which is why the parking lot had been empty, we were almost alone. Except for this one couple which obviously wanted to have breakfast with a view, and which just could not decide where to finally stay put …
Hier jetzt der Leuchtturm, der diesem Abschnitt des langen Ucluelet Wanderweges seinen Namen gibt. Zwischendrin haben wir ein seltsames Pfeifen gehört: Die rote Boje! Je stürmischer der Wind, desto lauter pfeift sie. Und die grüne Boje hat eine Glocke. Auf die Weise können sich Seeleute an den Tönen orientieren und zwischen dem Pfeifen rechts und dem Geläut links den sicheren Kanal finden.
Here now you see the lighthouse to which this part of the long Ucluelet trail owes its name. In between we heard a strange whistling: The red buoy! The stronger the wind gets, the louder it whistles. And the green buoy has a bell. That way, sailors can orient themselves listening to the sounds, and can find the safe channel between the whistling on the right and the bell sounding on the left.
Wir sind dann auch mal ein bisschen näher ans Wasser – da schwemmt es alles mögliche an. Übrigens: Entlang der Westküste von Vancouver Island liegen hunderte von Schiffswracks, im „Graveyard of the Pacific“ (Pazifik-Friedhof).
We did go a bit closer to the water at times – a lot of stuff is washed ashore. By the way: Along the west coast of Vancouver Island hundreds of ship wrecks lie in the water, in the „Graveyard of the Pacific“.
Damit kann man durchaus auch Spaß haben!
But you can definitely have fun with the stuff!

Wir durften allerdings auch nicht überall hin …
We were however not allowed to go wherever we wanted …
Wenn man den Weg die Küste entlang hinter sich hat, kommt noch ein Rundweg durch ein Stück Sumpf, mit vielen Infotafeln.
Once you have finished the hike along the coast, there is a little loop path through a bog, with lots of information tablets.
Das war mal Teil eines Strommastes, der die Radiostation versorgt hat. Übrigens: Ucluelet war eine der ersten Gemeinden mit einer eigenen Telefongesellschaft.
That used to be part of a power pole that served the radio station. By the way: Ucluelet was one of the first communities with their own telephone company.

Wir haben mal wieder gr0ßes Glück mit dem Wetter! Wobei es immer noch sehr kühl ist, um Mittag herum 9°C.
Once again we are very lucky with the weather! But it is still quite cold, around noon just 9°C.
Hier wachsen ganz schön große Pilze!
Quite large mushrooms grow here!
So, wir haben dann Mittagspause gemacht, in unserer Hütte gabs lecker Pizza und feinen Nachtisch. Heute ist in Kanada Thanksgiving, da haben die Restaurants zu. – Und danach sind wir zu den „Ancient Cedars“ (den uralten Zedern).
Okay, we had our lunch break now, in our little cottage we had yummy pizza and a tasty dessert. Today is Thanksgiving in Canada, the restaurants are closed. – And afterwards we went to the „Ancient Cedars“.
Das war nur eine kleine Wanderung, aber diese großen Bäume sind sehr beeindruckend. – Man sieht ja, wie komisch wir beide aus der Wäsche gucken 🙂
It was only a small hike, but these large trees are really impressive. – You can see how dumbfounded the two of us look 🙂

Heute waren nicht alle so faul … wir haben auch mal welche im Wasser gesehen.
Today they were not all that lazy … we also did spot a few in the water here and there.
