So, wir sind morgens schon wieder ausgeflogen …
Okay, we took off once again in the morning …
… denn wir fahren ins Inselinnere.
… because we are driving towards the center of the island.
Wir wohnen ja nicht ohne Grund in Waimea. Von hier ist es nicht so weit zum Waimea Canyon. Aber auf dem Weg dahin mussten wir natürlich ein paar Fotostopps einlegen.
Because it is for a good reason that we live in Waimea. From here it is not so far to the Waimea Canyon. But of course, on the way there we had to take some photo stops.
Da ist es wahrscheinlich gut, dass man an dieser schmalen Straße nicht so oft anhalten kann …
So it is probably good that on this narrow road you cannot often stop all that easily …
Und dann haben wir den ersten der vier offiziellen Aussichtspunkte erreicht. Das Ticket, das man ziehen muss ($10 pro Auto, $5 pro Person), gilt für alle vier.
And then we reached the first of the four official lookouts. The ticket that you have to draw ($10 per car, $5 per person), counts for all four.
Man kann sich nicht satt sehen (oder -fotografieren). Und was auch toll war: ein Hawaiianer hat uns nebenbei eine Menge erzählt, über Legenden, die hawaiianische Sprache, tägliches Leben etc.
You cannot stop looking (or taking photos). And something else that was great: while we watched, a Hawaiian gentleman told us lots, about legends, the Hawaiian language, daily life etc.
Aber irgendwann sind wir weiter zum zweiten Aussichtspunkt. Hier blickt man „quer“ zu dem Blick, den wir davor hatten.
But finally we did move on, to the second lookout. Here you look at an angle to the view that we had before.
Der nächste der vier Aussichtspunkte bietet dann einen Blick in Richtung Meer.
The next of the four lookouts then offers a look in the direction of the ocean.
Und wir sind definitiv auf Wolken-Höhe!
And we are definitely at cloud height!
Ach so, und die NASA ist hier auch vertreten …

Wir sind da auf dem Weg zum dritten Aussichtspunkt vorbeigekommen. Die Straße zum vierten ist nichts für ängstliche Autofahrer.
We passed here on our way to the third lookout. The road to the fourth one is not for the faint hearted.
Aber als wir dann da waren, hat sich gezeigt, das war es wert. Erstens ist man noch mal ein Stück näher an der Küste …
But when we then got there, it was clear that it was well worth it. First of all you are even a bit closer to the coast …
… und zweitens kann man da dann ein ganzes Stück parallel zur Küste laufen und die Ausblicke genießen.
… and then you can also walk quite a ways parallel to the coast and enjoy the views.
Aber die Wolken wurden immer mehr und kamen immer näher … also fahren wir jetzt zurück. Hier und da hatte es auch ein wenig genieselt …
But the clouds were getting more numerous and kept getting closer … so now we drive back. Here and there we have had a bit of drizzle …
Natürlich haben wir wieder hier und da an der Straße gehalten. Man kann sich einfach nicht sattsehen!
Of course we did take stops here and there on the road. You just cannot stop looking!
Übrigens wurden wir gewarnt: dieser rote Boden soll Flecken hinterlassen, die einfach nicht mehr rausgehen. Deshalb sollte man tunlichst Kleidung und Schuhe mitbringen, die auch im Abfall landen dürfen … Es gibt hier sogar „Dirt Shirts“ zu kaufen, die mit dieser Erde gefärbt sind. (wir haben aber keine gekauft)
By the way, we were warned: this red soil is supposed to leave stains that you just cannot get out anymore. That is why you should best bring clothing and shoes which you won’t mind throwing in the trash … You can even by “Dirt Shirts” here, which have been coloured with that soil. (but we did not buy any)
Nicht nur für die rote Erde ist Kauai bekannt. Man nennt es ja auch die Garteninsel. Also zeigen wir Euch hier und da mal ein paar der Pflänzchen, die wir gesehen haben. Hier die callistemon salignus, der weiße Zylinderputzer.
Kauai is not only known for the red soil, it is also called the Garden Island. So we will, ever once in a while, show you a few of the plants that we discovered. Here the callistemon salignus, the white bottlebrush.
Okay, jetzt ist es schon nach Mittag, es ist wieder gut heiß, und deswegen gönnen wir uns eine verspätete Mittagspause. (Das “Boss” Sandwich war nicht für mich …)
Okay, now it is already past noon, it is once again very hot, and that is why we now enjoy a belated lunch break. (The “boss” sandwich was not for me …)
Später haben wir uns dann noch einmal aufgerafft und sind wieder auf Erkundungstour.
Later then we did bestir ourselves and did go once more on an exploration trip.

Denn gar nicht so weit von unserer Unterkunft gibt es diesen Wasserlauf, komplett mit einem Bewässerungskanal, den die alten Hawaiianer gebaut hatten, …
Because not all that far from our lodging, there is this water course, complete with a ditch that the old Hawaiians had built …
… und auch wieder eine „schwingende“ Brücke.

Von der aus kann man gut beobachten, was sich da im Wasser so tut.
From that vantage point you can nicely observe what happens in the water below.
