Auf gehts! Gestern haben wir uns ja nur einen Überblick verschafft, heute gehen wir den nächsten Schritt. Und wie man sieht, sind wir wieder früh dran, um 6:30 Uhr sind wir schon oben beim ersten Lookout. Der Parkplatz ist noch leer, wir sind die ersten.
On we go! Yesterday we only got a general idea of the layout, today we will take the next step. And as you can see, we are up bright and early again, at 6:30 am we are already at the first lookout. The parking lot is still empty, we are the first.
Auch der nette Hawaiianer ist noch nicht da, wir haben die Plattform ganz für uns alleine.
The nice Hawaiian gentleman is not here yet either, we have the platform all to ourselves.
Im Morgenlicht sieht man die Farben viel besser.
In the morning light the colours can be seen much better.
Aber wir wollten nur einen kurzen Blick werfen, unser wirkliches Ziel ist der zweite Lookout. Jetzt wird es ernst!
But we only wanted to take a short look, our real destination is the second lookout. Now matters will get serious!
Heute wird gewandert.
Today we go on a hike.
Und der kleine Kerl ist auch schon unterwegs: Sialia Mexicana, ein Blaukehl-Hüttensänger. (Es gibt hier eine Menge Vögel – man hört sie ja. Sehen tut man sie eher selten …)
And this little guy is also already up and about: Sialia mexicana, a Western Bluebird. (There are a lot of birds here – you here them after all. But you see them rarely …)
So, jetzt müssen wir uns aber wieder ein bisschen bewegen. Wie man an den langen Ärmeln sieht, ist es noch nicht so warm …

Wie schon gesagt, hier und da gibts jetzt mal Pflänzchen. Hier die Hedychium Gardnerianum, ein Zieringwer.

Nicht nur von diesem nicht essbaren Ingwer steht hier eine Menge herum. An manchen Stellen sind auch Ansammlungen von Schildern zu sehen. Vielleicht haben die ja auch ausgesamt …
You find not only lots of this non edible ginger all over the place. At some spots there are also masses of signs to be seen. Maybe they also spread their seeds …
Naja, wir sind eigentlich auf dem Canyon Trail, aber jetzt machen wir einen Abstecher: den Cliff View Point wollen wir uns ansehen. Und der Ausblick ist nicht schlecht, nicht wahr?
Oh well, we are really on the Canyon Trail, but now we make a detour: we want to check out the Cliff View Point. And the view is really not bad, don’t you think?
Noch ein bisschen weiter nach links geschwenkt: da wo der nackte helle Boden zu sehen ist, da wollen wir jetzt hin!

Unterwegs haben wir doch mal ein paar Vögel gesehen. Zum Beispiel den Japanbrillenvogel, Zosterops Japonicus.
On the way then for a change we actually did see some birds. For example the warbling white eye, zosterops japonicus.
Der Weg war sehr abwechslungsreich. Mal über Wurzeln, dann über Steine, mal zwischen Bäumen, dann zwischen hohen Gräsern und Blumen.
The trail was very varied. Sometimes across roots, then across rocks, sometimes between trees, then between high grasses and flowers.
Manchmal anspruchsvoller, manchmal leicht zu gehen, aber auf jeden Fall immer interessant.
Sometimes more challenging, sometimes easy to walk, but in any case always interesting.
Und ab acht Uhr waren die Helikopter unterwegs …
And starting at eight the helicopters were also around …
Was es leider ja noch nicht gibt: Geruchsfotos. Es gab eine Menge Beeren am Weg, viele von denen waren überreif und lagen herum, und der Geruch von faulendem, gärendem Obst war manchmal schon heftig.
Something that unfortunately does not exist yet: odor photos. There were a lot of berries along the way, many of those were more than ripe and lay on the ground, and the smell of rotting, fermenting fruit was quite strong at times.
Aber die meiste Zeit hat man das schlicht ausgeblendet, wir mussten uns ja auf den Weg konzentrieren.
But most of the time you just didn’t notice, we were too much focused on the trail.
Und wir waren von den tollen Ausblicken abgelenkt.
And we were distracted by the great views.
Dann kamen wir zu der Stelle, die wir vorher schon von weitem gesehen hatten.
Then we go to the spot that we had already seen from farther off earlier.
Hier hat es kurz genieselt – Ihr seht auch die tiefen Wolken.

Der Weg den Hang runter war keineswegs harmlos. Gut, dass das Nieseln schnell aufgehört hat.
The path down the slope was definitely not without danger. Good thing that the drizzle stopped quickly.
Aber wir sind tapfer weiter, bis hierhin, zu dem kleinen Wasserfall.
But we bravely marched on, to this spot with the little waterfall.
Hier hat eine Menge Holunder geblüht, und einige der Blüten habe ich mit meinen Haaren eingesammelt, hier sieht man immerhin eine.
Here a lot of elderberry was in bloom, and some of the flowers I collected with my hair, here you can see just one of them.
Und dann ging es zurück. Bei den tollen Ausblicken wurde es auch auf dem Rückweg nicht langweilig.
And then we walked back. With all the great views the trail back did not get boring either.
Außerdem: wie gesagt, der Weg war immer wieder anspruchsvoll.
Furthermore: as I mentioned, the trail was often quite challenging.
Und dann hat es auch noch angefangen zu regnen. Aber jetzt richtig! Glücklicherweise war es nicht mehr so weit bis zurück zum Auto.
And then it started to rain. But this time in full force! Luckily it was not all that far anymore back to the car.
Gut, dass wir so früh los sind!
What a good thing that we had started so early!
Jetzt gibt es noch eine Stärkung und eine Pause … und dann …
