Yes, we are once again up and about early, because from the coast …
… gehts wieder in die Berge hoch.

Oben ist es noch diesig. Übrigens: hier sind wir auf ca. 1030m.
At the top it is still misty. By the way: here we are at about 3400 feet.
Aber wir sind nicht alleine. Ein Pazifischer Goldregenpfeifer?
But we are not alone. A Pacific golden plover?
Wir sind zum letzten der vier Lookouts. Bis wir da waren, war es auch schon schön sonnig. Noch … für nachmittags ist Gewitter angesagt.
We went to the last of the four lookouts. By the time we got there, it was already nice and sunny. So far … for the afternoon they predicted a thunderstorm.
Es ist noch menschenleer!

Wir nehmen heute den Pihea Trail.
Today we take the Pihea trail.
Der Weg führt über unebenes Terrain bergauf und bergab. Man muss sehr vorsichtig gehen, um nicht wegzurutschen.
The hike leads across rough ground, up and down the hill. You have to walk carefully to make sure you do not slip.
Und dann haben wir ihn hier gefunden.
And then we found this guy here.
Ein “Hammerhaiwurm” – was für ein unpoetischer Name!
A “shovel-headed garden worm” or “hammerhead worm” – what an unpoetic name!
Wie gehen weiter und lassen ihn in Ruhe. Immer mal wieder öffnen sich nach links Blicke zur Küste hinunter.
We walk on and leave it alone. Time and again, to the left you can catch views down to the coast.
Dann laufen wir eine Weile durch ein Meer von Farnen.
Then for a while we walk through an ocean of ferns.
Aber keine Angst, sie beißen nicht!
But do not worry, they don’t bite!
Dann wieder ein offenes Stück an der Klippe.
Then again an open area near the bluff.
Als nächstes kam dann ein Stück Weg zwischen Bäumen entlang.
Next there was a piece of the way leading through the trees.
Hier haben wir eine Menge Vögel gehört. Zu sehen waren eigentlich nur Äste …
Here we heard lots of birds. See we could really only branches …
Aber die meiste Zeit mussten wir sowieso auf den Boden sehen.
But most of the time we had to look on the ground anyhow.
Es kamen auch immer öfter matschige Stellen. Wir laufen hier nämlich zum höchstgelegenen Sumpf der Erde!
There were also more and more often muddy patches. Because we are hiking towards the highest swamp of the world!
Eine Weile ging es durch hohe Gräser.
For a while we walked through high grasses.
Trotz der Sonne ist alles noch recht nass.
Despite the sun everything is still quite wet.
Und bei solchen Wegen wünscht man sich trockenen Boden!
And on such paths you wish for a dry ground!
Die Schatten im Tal werden immer kürzer …
The shadows in the valley get shorter and shorter …
Immer öfter sind jetzt Bretter ausgelegt, auf denen man laufen kann.
Ever more often, there are now planks provided that you can walk on.
Gut, dass wir aufmerksam genug waren, dass wir diese Jungfer (den genauen Namen habe ich nicht gefunden …) entdeckt haben. (Auf der Insel gibt es jede Menge Libellen, und manchmal sieht man auch einen Schmetterling, aber die kommen alle nur vorbeigeschossen …)
Lucky that we paid enough attention to spot this Pacific Hawaiian damselfly. (There are lots of dragonflies on the island, and sometimes you also see a butterfly, but they all just zip past …)
Der Boden wird jetzt immer nasser, um uns herum sind mehr und mehr Moose zu sehen, und die Bäume werden immer kleiner.
The ground now gets ever wetter, all around us there are more and more mosses to be seen, and the trees get ever shorter.
Nur leider ist es schon fast zehn. Also werden wir allmählich umdrehen müssen. Torben hat die Baumschranke als Stopp akzeptiert, aber ich musste wenigstens noch ein paar Meter weiter gehen. Aber dann bin ich brav zurückgekommen …
Unfortunately it is almost ten by now. So we will have to turn around sometime soon. Torben accepted the tree barrier as a stop, but I had to at least go on for a few more meters. But then I was a good girl and came back …
Dabei hätte es noch spannende Abzweigungen gegeben …
Even though there would have been interesting detours …
Auch auf unserem Weg gab es noch genug zu sehen.
On our trail there was also still enough to see.
Doch vor allem müssen wir zügig weiter. Die Wolken werden schon wieder mehr.
But most of all we have to quickly move on. The clouds are getting numerous.
Das hier ist im Trockenen schon kein Spaß.

Eine tolle Wanderung war das! Jetzt haben wir uns eine Stärkung verdient.

Aber der Tag war noch nicht um … wir sind später noch einmal los.
