So, unser letzter ganzer Tag auf Kauai, also lassen wir es ruhig angehen. Nach einem gemütlichen Frühstück …
Well, our last full day on Kauai, so we are starting slow. After a leisurely breakfast …
… sind wir erst um 7:30 Uhr los. Am Sportplatz machen sich die Vögel auch so langsam für den Tag fertig.
… we did not leave until 7:30 am. At the playing field the birds are also slowly getting ready for the day.
Wir waren viel im Süden, Osten und der Mitte der Insel unterwegs, heute ist der extreme Westen dran. Da gibt es einen kilometerlangen Strand, 24km um genau zu sein. Nur muss man erst mal hinkommen … und sich an all den Schildern vorbeitrauen.
We had spent lots of time in the South, East and the middle of the island, today we will check out the extreme West. There you find a beach that stretches over kilometers, 24km to be precise. But first you have to get there … and dare to pass all the signs.
5 Meilen, also 8 Kilometer lang geht es wieder mal über eine „dirt road“. Gut, dass es zur Abwechslung hier und da Vögel zu sehen gab, hier ein Rotkardinal.
For 5 miles, so 8 kilometers you once again travel on one of these “dirt roads”. Good thing that there were birds to be seen here and there as a distraction, here a northern cardinal.
Und sein Namens-Vetter, der Graukardinal, auch bekannt als „der Punk“.
And its relative in name, the red-crested cardinal, also known as “the Punk”.
Die Straße war die meiste Zeit ganz okay zum Fahren. Aber wir haben uns Zeit gelassen … die Mietwagenfirma hätte bestimmt sehr ungehalten reagiert, wenn wir hier liegen geblieben wären 😊
Most of the times the road was rather okay to drive. But we took our time … the rental car company definitely would have reacted in an angry manner if we had gotten stuck here 😊
Es gab hier und da schicke Blumen zu entdecken.
Here and there you could discover beautiful flowers.
Und sogar eine Mietze mitten im Nirgendwo.
And even a pussycat in the middle of nowhere.
Die letzten Meter sind wir gelaufen, denn hier ist es schon sehr sandig …
The last meters we then walked, because here it is quite sandy already …
Und dann waren wir da!
And then we had made it!
Sand, so weit das Auge blickt …
Sand for as far as the eye can see …
Wir haben die Sandalen ausgezogen und sind losgelaufen.
We took off our sandals and started walking.
In der Ferne sieht man die Inseln Ni‘ihau (die man nicht betreten darf) und Lehua.
In the distance you see the islands Ni’ihau (which you are not allowed to enter) and Lehua.
Wir haben es einfach nur genossen.
We simply enjoyed ourselves to the fullest.
Und, nein, wir waren nicht völlig allein. Seht Ihr hinten links den Fleck? Das ist ein Pickup Truck.
And, no, we were not totally alone. Can you see that dot in the distance on the left? That is a pickup truck.
Vögel gab es auch hier und da …
There were also birds here and there …
… aber hauptsächlich: wir und Strand und Meer.
… but mainly: us and beach and ocean.
Dann gabs mal wieder Gesellschaft:
Then we once again had company:
Die Krabbe hat sich in Windeseile eingebuddelt.
The crab dug itself in in no time!
Für die Fotos war es durchaus gut, dass wir nicht die einzigen Menschen am Strand waren (die anderen waren alles Angler). Es gibt hier nämlich sehr hohe Sanddünen, bis zu 100 Fuß, also 30m. Nur sieht man das ja nicht ohne Größenvergleich.
For the photos it was actually good that we were not the only people at the beach (the others were all fishermen). Because the sand dunes here are very high, up to 100 feet, meaning 30m. But you cannot really see that without anything to compare the size to.

Wir haben einfach die Wellen genossen. Und natürlich hat uns irgendwann eine überrascht und wir waren bis zur Taille nass … aber wir haben immer rechtzeitig die Kameras hochgerissen 😊
We simply enjoyed the waves. And of course, at some point in time one of them caught us unawares and then we were wet up to our waists … but we always pulled up the cameras in time 😊
Und dann sind wir irgendwann doch zurück zum Auto. Wir wollten etwas naschen … aber die Hitze hatte ganze Arbeit geleistet.
And then eventually we did go back to the car. We wanted to enjoy a sweet snack … but the heat had done its job.
Mittlerweile war es fast mittag, und heiß!
By now it was almost noon, and hot!
Auf dem Heimweg haben wir dann noch diesen Fregattvogel gesehen.
On the way home we then saw this frigate bird.
Wir haben dann in Ruhe gegessen und sind nachmittags noch einmal los: Ich darf noch einmal schnorcheln. Und da war doch glatt ein Stück Strand abgesteckt:
We then unhurriedly ate lunch and in the afternoon we left once again: I get to go snorkeling one more time. And low and behold! A part of the beach was staked out:
Toll! – Während wir am Strand waren, hat die Robbe sich nur hier und da mal ein bisschen gereckt, ansonsten schlief sie da ganz ruhig.
Great! – While we were at the beach, the seal only stretched a bit here and there, for most of the time is just slept quietly.
Wir sind nach einer Stunde dann wieder gegangen. Auf dem Rückweg hab ich ein Wespennest entdeckt:
We left again after about an hour. On the way back I discovered a wasps’ nest:
Und bei uns auf der Veranda gab es dieses Tierchen zu sehen:
And at our place on the porch, there was this little creature to be seen:
Wir hatten gerade genug Zeit, die Schnorchelsachen zu spülen, dann mussten wir wieder los. Wir hatten für siebzehn Uhr reserviert:
We had just enough time to rinse my snorkeling gear, then we had to leave again. We had booked a table for five p.m.:
Danach sind wir nur noch kurz zum Strand.
Afterwards we took a quick detour to the beach.
