Heute sind wir als erstes zum Kilauea gefahren. Am Visitor Center haben wir geparkt und sind einen Weg entlang, der großspurig mit „eruption viewing“ (= Blick auf den Vulkanausbruch) gekennzeichnet war. Nur leider ist heute das Wetter nicht so toll …
Today we first of all drove to the Kilauea. At the Visitor Center we parked, and then we went down a path that was boasting with a sign “eruption viewing”. But unfortunately the weather is not that great today …
Alles war sehr feucht und es regnete auch die meiste Zeit.
All was very wet, and most of the time it did rain as well.
Wir sind ein bisschen rumgelaufen und -gefahren, haben reichlich wenig gesehen und waren insgesamt desorientiert.
We then walked and drove around a bit, saw next to nothing, and on the whole felt disoriented.
Eigentlich dachten wir, wir sind ja „alte Hasen“, wissen genau, wir wollen zum Museum beim Krater, einen Blick werfen, dann runter, wo die flüssige Lava zu sehen ist. Aber es hat sich eine Menge geändert …
We had thought we were “an old hand” at this and know exactly that we want to go to the museum near the crater, have a peak, then go down to where the lava flows. But a lot has changed …
Also zurück zum Visitor Center. Dort haben wir uns von einem der Ranger erklären lassen, dass es den Krater, den wir 2018 gesehen hatten, so nicht mehr gibt, und dass es die flüssige Lava unten bei der Küste auch nicht mehr zu sehen gibt.
So we went back to the Visitor Center. There we had one of the rangers explain to us that the crater as we had seen it in 2018 does not exist anymore, and that the lava flows down towards the coast is also not visible anymore.
Also nichts zu sehen! Und dann auch noch Regen! Lass uns abfahren … Aber dann hat der Ranger uns gesagt, dass die Sulphur Banks (= Schwefelbänke) und die Steam Vents (= Dampfschlote) bei nassem Wetter tatsächlich beeindruckender sind, denn mehr Feuchtigkeit bedeutet, es gibt auch mehr zu sehen. Okay … also rüsten wir uns aus. (Ist das Johnny Depp???)
So nothing to see! And rain on top! Let us leave … But then the ranger told us that the Sulphur Banks and the Steam Vents are actually more impressive in wet weather, because with more moisture, there is more to see. Okay … so we equip ourselves. (Is that Johnny Depp???)
Und dann sind wir losmarschiert. An vielen kleinen Orchideen vorbei. Diese Bambusorchideen sind hier nicht heimisch, sie wurden 1945 aus Asien eingeführt.
And then we marched on. Passing lots of little orchids. These bamboo orchids are not native, they were brought here from Asia in 1945.
Bald kamen wir dann zu den Schwefelbänken.
Soon then we got the the Sulphur Banks.
Eindrucksvolle Schilder warnen einen davor, den Weg zu verlassen. Im Jahr 2000 ist hier jemand durch die dünne Erdkruste gebrochen und hat sich Verbrennungen an den Beinen zugezogen. Der Dampf kommt an dieser Stelle mit 96°C aus dem Boden!
Impressive signs warn you about leaving the path. In the year 2000 somebody broke through the thin crust and suffered burns on his legs. At this spot the steam comes out of the ground at 96°C!
Wir sind auf den Wegen geblieben! Man sieht auch so genug.
We stayed on the paths! You can see enough that way.
Zum Beispiel Ohi’a Lehua. Diese Pflanze ist nur auf den hawaiianischen Inseln zu finden. Leider wird sie aktuell durch zwei Fungusarten bedroht. Bisher gibt es kein Mittel gegen den „ROD“ (schneller Ohi’a Tod).
Ohi’a lehua zum Beispiel. This plant is only to be found on the Hawaiian Islands. Unfortunately it is currently endangered by two kinds of fungus. So far there is no cure against the “ROD” (rapid Ohi’a death).

Die verschiedenen Farben waren sehr spannend.
The different colours were very interesting.
Übrigens: die Hitze, die aus diesen Erdlöchern kommt, ist enorm!
By the way: the heat that comes out of these holes in the ground is immense!
Was mir aber mehr zu schaffen gemacht hat, war die Feuchtigkeit. Von unten aus den Schloten, von oben aus den Wolken. Bestimmt hat das sehr seltsam ausgesehen, wie ich unter meinem Regencape heraus fotografiert habe …
What was more of a bother for me though was the humidity. From below out of the vents, from above out of the clouds. I guess I looked rather weird, taking pictures from under my rain cape …
Aber zwischendrin hat es dann auch mal aufgehört zu regnen. Man kann natürlich auch einfach wo hingehen, wo es nicht regnet …
But in between it then also did stop raining here and there. Of course you can also simply go some place where it does not rain …

Aber draußen gibt es einfach mehr zu sehen. Hier eine „Oha“: Wie der Name vermuten lässt, ist auch diese Pflanze endemisch.
But outside there is simply more to see. Here an “Oha”. As the name might let you guess, this plant is also endemic.
Was wir unbedingt sehen wollen, ist der aktuelle Krater, auch wenn der im Moment wohl nicht so eindrucksvoll ist. Der Ranger hat uns gesagt, wo wir am nähesten hinkommen, also sind wir weitergefahren. Das letzte Stück muss man gehen. Zuerst noch über die Straße, aber die ist nicht mehr in dem besten Zustand …
What we definitely wanted to see, is the current crater, even if that is supposed to be not all that impressive at the moment. The ranger had told us where we would get closest, so we drove on. The last bit of the way you have to walk. First still on the street, but that is not in the best of conditions anymore …

Ja, und auf dem Rückweg haben wir dann unsere ersten Nene gesehen!
Well, and on the way back then, we saw nene for the first time!
Und bei der Fahrt aus dem Nationalpark haben wir Vögel entdeckt, die wir nicht erwartet hatten: Das hier sind Kalifasane. Die Art wurde 1962 hier eingeführt – zur Jagd natürlich.
And when we drove out of the National Park, we discovered birds that we had not expected: These here are kalij pheasants. This species was introduced here in 1962 – for hunting of course.
Was soll man sagen? Wir haben trotz des Wetters heute eine Menge gesehen!
What can you say? Despite the weather we have seen lots today!
