So, heute sind wir erst mittags los. Ich fühle mich nicht ganz so toll, hab mir wohl einen Schnupfen eingefangen. ☹ (Natürlich hab ich gleich einen Corona-Test gemacht: Negativ) In Hilo schüttet es, also sind wir nach Norden, wo weniger Wolken zu sein scheinen.
So, today we did not leave until noon. I do not feel all that well, it seems I caught a cold. ☹ (Of course I did a Covid test right away: negative) In Hilo the rain is pounding down, so we went up North where there seam to be less clouds.
Bei dieser Brücke sind wir gleich nochmal umgekehrt. Im Moment nieselt es nur, sehr praktisch, denn wir haben hier ganz zufällig die Umauma Falls entdeckt!
At this bridge we right away turned back for now. At the moment there is only light rain, very nice, because here totally by chance we discovered the Umauma Falls!
Da sind zwei, der eine weit weg, der andere fast unter der Brücke … gehört der auch dazu?
There are two, the one far off, the other one almost under the bridge … are they also part of it?
Die Pflanzen sind auch eine Augenweide: ein afrikanischer Tulpenbaum.
The plants are also a feast for the eyes: an African tulip tree.
Wir sind dann wieder weiter, zum Laupahoehoe Point.
We then traveled on again, to the Laupahoehoe Point.
1946 gab es bei den Aleuten ein Erdbeben, das einen Tsunami mit drei großen Wellen ausgelöst hat. Nach der zweiten, schon sehr hohen Welle liefen die Kinder der Schule, die unten an der Küste stand, weit hinaus, um die angespülten Fische aufzusammeln, während die Lehrer zurück in die Hütte sind, um sich trockene Kleidung anzuziehen.
1946 there was an earthquake in the Aleutian Islands, which caused a tsunami with three big waves. After the second, already very high wave, the children of the school, that was situated down at the coast, ran far out to pick up the fish that got washed up, while the teachers went back to the cabin to change into dry clothing.
Und dann kam die dritte Welle. 21 Schüler und drei Lehrer starben.
And then the third wave hit. 21 students and three teachers died.
Keiner wusste, dass das zurückgehende Wasser ein Zeichen ist, dass die nächste Tsunami-Welle kommt …
Nobody had known that the receding water is a sign that the next tsunami wave is about to hit …
Die eine Lehrerin, die überlebt hat, berichtete, dass sie mit der Kamera in der Hand auf eine hohe Welle für ein gutes Foto gehofft hatte … Mit diesem bedrückenden Gedanken fliegen wir samt Kameras ab.
The one lady teacher who survived, later reported that – with the camera in her hands – she had been hoping for a high wave for a good photo … With this depressing thought we take off with our cameras.
Und wenn das hier kein Geweihfarn ist! Wir haben vor kurzem einen geschenkt gekriegt. Der hängt jetzt im Badezimmer, denn das ist eine Pflanze mit hohen Ansprüchen …
And don’t you know it, this must be a staghorn fern! We did get one as a present not long ago. It is now hanging in the bathroom, because that is a plant with high demands …
Jetzt fahren wir aber wirklich weiter … es zieht wieder zu.
But now we will really drive on … the clouds are closing in again.
Auf der Straße haben wir dann unseren ersten Mungo gesehen. Natürlich gehören die eigentlich auch nicht hierher.
On the street then we spotted our first mongoose. And of course they are not native here either.
Beim Schild für den „Waipi‘o Valley Lookout“ sind wir dann wieder von der Hauptstraße abgebogen. Die Täler hier im Norden werden in den Reiseführern sehr hoch gelobt, doch kann man sie meist nur zu Fuß in langen Wanderungen erreichen. Und dafür fühle ich mich ganz klar nicht fit genug. Also wollten wir zum Aussichtspunkt fahren, aber auch das ging nicht:
At the sign for the “Waipi’o Valley Lookout” we then turned off the main highway again. The valleys here in the North are highly praised in the guide books, but most of them you can only reach by foot in long hikes. And I definitely do not feel fit enough for that. So we wanted to just drive to the lookout spot, but that did not work out either:
Also haben wir an der Straße geparkt und sind weitergeganen. “Waipi’o” bedeutet übrigens „gebogenes Wasser“.
So we parked by the roadside and then walked on. By the way “waipi’o” means “curved water”.
Eine Dame hatte uns zwar gewarnt, wir sollten das lassen, denn „da ist ein Protest am Laufen“. Tja, wir sind mit den Anwohnern ins Gespräch gekommen und haben erfahren, es geht um die Straße, die hinunter ins Tal führt. Mit bis zu 45% Steigung und in keinem guten Zustand, aber die Ämter wollen nichts unternehmen …
A lady had warned us though, we should not, because “there is a protest going on”. Well, we got to talk to the residents and found out that it is because of the road that leads down into the valley. With a grade of up to 45% and in not a very good condition. But the authorities drag their feet in doing anything …
Auf dem Heimweg gab es dann einen kleinen Regenbogen.
On the way home then we got a bit of a rainbow.
Und bis wir dann wieder bei unserem Bed & Breakfast waren, war es auch schon dunkel …
And by the time we got back to our bed & breakfast, it was dark already …
