Heute haben wir es langsam angehen lassen. Mittlerweile hat sich Torben mit meiner Erkältung angesteckt. (Natürlich haben wir gleich nochmal Corona Tests gemacht, aber es gab kein „positiv“.) Schließlich sind wir los in Richtung Süden zum Vulkan. Mittlerweile ist es nach elf und schon sehr heiß, wie man am Flimmern sieht. Hier sind wir auf 915m. Zwei Minuten davor waren wir noch auf 762m.
Today we took it easy. By now Torben has contracted my cold. (Of course we did Covid tests once again, but we got no “positive” result.) We finally did leave towards the South in the direction of the volcano. By now it is past eleven and already very hot, as you can see by the wavy air. Here we are at 915m. Two minutes earlier we had still been at 762m.
Beim Vulkan sind wir auf die „Chain of Craters Road“ abgebogen, die bis hinunter zu den Klippen führt, auf einer Länge von 19 Meilen / 30km.
At the volcano we turned off onto the “Chain of Craters Road” that leads all the way down to the cliffs, with a length of 19 miles / 30km.
Eigentlich wollten wir ja nur zum Ende, zum “Holei Sea Arch”, den wir 2018 ganz grandios fanden. Damals hatte es dauernd geregnet, deswegen hatten wir die Stops davor nicht gemacht. Aber heute ist das Wetter besser …
Originally we only wanted to drive to the end, to the “Holei Sea Arch” which we had thought so magnificent in 2018. Back then it had been raining so much, which is why we had not taken the earlier stops. But today the weather is better …
Hier gab es also 1974 einen Ausbruch.
So here there had been an eruption in 1974.
Es ist spannend zu sehen, wie das Lavagestein hier aussieht.
It is interesting to see what the lava rocks look like here.
Hier eine “lava tree mold“, ein Abdruck, wo mal ein Baum stand.

Und natürlich können wir uns wieder gar nicht satt sehen an der Lava.
And as usual looking at the lava we could not get enough.
Nach über einer halben Stunde sind wir dann doch weiter. Der nächste Halt war der Luamanu Krater. Dann der Puhimau Krater und danach der Ko’oko’olau Krater. Dieser letzte ist schon komplett zugewachsen. Hier ist ca. 200 Jahre keine Lava mehr geflossen.
After more than half an hour we then finally traveled on. The next stop was the Luamanu Crater. Then the Puhimau Crater and afterwards the Ko’oko’olau Crater. This last one is already totally grown over. Here no lava has flown for about 200 years.
Was soll ich Euch sagen? Wir haben bei jedem Hinweisschild angehalten.
What shall I tell you? We stopped at every guide sign.
Torben stand hier beim Pauahi Krater. Der ist 110m tief und 500m lang. Hier gab es drei Ausbrüche in jüngerer Vergangenheit: Mai 1973, November 1973 und November 1979.
Here Torben was standing at the Pauahi Crater. That one is 110m deep and 500m long. Three eruptions happened here in recent history: May 1973, November 1973 and November 1979.
Schön, dass wir uns das heute bei solch traumhaftem Wetter alles ansehen können. Wir hatten ja keine Ahnung, was wir da 2018 alles verpasst hatten!
How nice that today with the wonderful weather we can take a close look at al this. We had had no idea how much we had missed in 2018!
Das wird dann irgendwann natürlich anstrengend … dem hier gings wohl ebenso.
Of course after a while that gets exhausting … I guess this one here felt the same way.
Aber jetzt kommen wir den Klippen schon näher.
But now we are finally getting closer to the cliffs.

Die verschiedenen Farben der Lava wirken wie ein gewebter Teppich.

Wir haben immer wieder angehalten. Hier zum Beispiel, wo es mal eine Straße gab …

Und die Formen der kalten Lava ebenso. Hier bricht das Gestein in kleine „Spielsteine“ auf.

Wie wir dann wirklich zu den Klippen kamen, war da viel gesperrt.
As we then finally did get to the cliffs, much was off-limits.
Aber beim vorletzten Stop auf der Straße durften wir halten.
But at the second to last stop on the road we were allowed to get out.
Hier sind wir lange geblieben und haben den Wellen zugesehen, die manchmal mit solch einer Wucht gegen die Felsen schlagen, dass das Wasser bis oben über den Rand spritzt. (Seht Ihr im Hintergrund das Gebäude? Das gibt Euch ein Gefühl dafür, wie hoch die Klippen sind.)
Here we stayed for a long time and watched the waves, which sometimes splash against the rock with such force that the water sprays all the way over the top. (Can you see the building in the background? That gives you an idea of how high the cliffs are.)
Immer wieder gab es auch kleine Regenbogen zu sehen.
Time and again you could also see little rainbows.
Und wie immer haben wir auch den Vögeln gerne zugesehen.
And as always we also enjoyed watching the birds.
Wie gut, dass wir immer wieder raus aufs Meer geblickt haben. Auf einmal ein Schrei von Torben. Und was sehe ich???
What a good thing that we kept also looking out at sea. Suddenly a shout from Torben. And what do I see???
Nach diesem Highlight sind wir dann doch endlich auch noch zum Holei Sea Arch. Das ist dieser Bogen vorne. Hier weiß ich auch die genaue Höhe: 27,4m. Und irgendwann wird er zusammenbrechen. Im Internet ist ein Beitrag from Juli dieses Jahres zu finden, da hat eine Fotografin einen Riss bemerkt, und auf meinen Bildern ist da schon ein gutes Stück weggebrochen.
After this highlight we finally did drive to the Holei Sea Arch. That is that bow at the front. And here I also know the exact height: 27.4m. And sooner or later, it will break down. On the internet you can find an entry from July of this year, about a lady photographer who discovered a crack, and on my photos quite a bit has broken off there already.
Mal sehen, ob der Bogen bei unserem nächsten Besuch noch da sein wird?

Wie Ihr Euch vorstellen könnt, ist der Holei Sea Arch eine Sehenswürdigkeit, die viele Touristen anzieht. Und die sehen sich alle nur den Bogen an. Dabei gibt es natürlich auch hier wieder tolle Lava zu sehen. Wie Graffiti!
As you can imagine, the Holei Sea Arch is a sight that attracts lots of tourists. And they all only look at the bow. But of course here as well there is beautiful lava to be seen. Like graffiti!
Wir sind dann noch einmal zu dem Halt davor zurück, da sind weniger Touristen. Was mir vorhin gar nicht aufgefallen war: Sieht das nicht aus wie der Kopf einer Schildkröte?
We then went back once more to the stop before, there you have less tourists. Something that I did not notice earlier: Does this not look like the head of a turtle?
Und da wir grad von Schildkröten sprechen … Was haben wir denn da?
And since we are talking about turtles … What do we have here?
Als wir dann endlich wieder zum Auto sind, war es schon fünf. Dabei hatten wir ja eigentlich nur einen kurzen Ausflug zum Holei Sea Arch machen wollen … Und jetzt müssen wir ja erst einmal die lange Straße wieder zurückfahren. Hier ist es jetzt schon 17:45 Uhr.
When we then finally went back to the car, it was five o’clock already. And we had originally only planned to take a short trip to the Holei Sea Arch … And now we first of all have to drive back this long road. Here now it is 5:45 pm already.
Tja, da haben wir dann beschlossen, gleich noch da zu bleiben. Wir wollten uns ja während unseres Aufenthaltes auf der Insel den nächtlichen Blick auf die Lava noch einmal gönnen. Und wie wir dann endlich auf dem Fußweg zum Aussichtspunkt waren, wurde es auch schon dunkel. Eigentlich natürlich schlechtes Timing, alle kommen zum Sonnenuntergang, um dann zu bleiben bis es dunkel wird.
Well, we then decided to stay even longer. After all we had planned to enjoy the nightly view of the lava once more while we are staying on the island. And when we were finally walking on the path to the lookout, it got dark already. Of course that was really rather bad timing, everybody comes for the sunset to then stay until it gets dark.
Wegen der Menschenmenge hatten wir erst keinen wirklich guten Blick, aber es war gleich klar, dass sich seit dem 16. etwas getan hat.
Because of all the people we first did not have a really good view, but even so it was clear right away that things have changed since the 16th.
Vor ein paar Tagen waren nur die Linien unten rechts zu sehen gewesen. Jetzt gab es immer wieder kleine Eruptionen!
A few days ago only the lines on the lower right had been visible. Now there were little eruptions time and again!
