Bei unserer Ankunft haben wir ja gleich festgestellt, dass wir uns den monumental-riesig-bombastischen Hauptbahnhof genauer ansehen müssen. Das Empfangsgebäude hat eine Breite von 200 Metern und eine Höhe von 72 Metern.
As I mentioned earlier: at our arrival already we had decided that we have to take a closer look at the monumental-huge-bombastic central station. The station building has a width of 200 meters and a height of 72 meters.
1931 wurde er offiziell eingeweiht. Ursprünglich war ein sehr viel einfacherer Bau geplant. Es wurde jedoch mit der Zeit immer komplexer und monumentaler, vor allem als Benito Mussolini Premierminister wurde. Ein paar Details von außen (es gibt viele Adler, Löwen, Pferde):

Innen gibt es sehr hohe Decken, auch mit großen Oberlichtern.

An den Wänden hoch oben etliche Bilder, die aussehen, als wären sie aus Kacheln zusammengesetzt.
At the walls, high up several paintings which look, as if they were put together out of tiles.
Die Böden sind mit großen Mosaiken geschmückt.

Und beim Hauptzugang zu den Gleisen sind auch welche an der Wand.
And next to the main access to the platforms there are also some on the walls.
Jetzt zu einer Ausstellung „unter“ dem Bahnhof: Memoriale della Shoah. Am Eingang begrüßt uns das Wort „Gleichgültigkeit“.
Now to an exhibition „below” the station: Memoriale della Shoah. At the entrance we are greeted by the word “indifference”.
Am Gleis 21, damals Gleis 1, gab es im Keller eine Postverladestation. Zwischen 1943 und 1945 wurde die Technik hier genutzt, um Juden in Konzentrationslager zu deportieren.
At platform 21, back the platform 1, there was a station for postal services. Between 1943 and 1945 the technology here was used to deport Jews to concentration camps.
Man kann Waggons wie die damals genutzen sehen.
You can see wagons like the ones used back then.
Die Wagen konnten mit einem Fahrstuhl auf die Ebene der „normalen“ Gleise gehoben werden.
With the use of an elevator, the carriages could be lifted up to the level of the “normal” tracks.
Der Abschnitt vor dem Fahrstuhl kann seitlich hin- und herfahren und auf diese Weise Wagen von unterschiedlichen Gleisen aufnehmen.
The part before the elevator can laterally be moved back and forth, and that way it can take up waggons from differing tracks.
Überlebende haben berichtet, dass sie damals keine Ahnung hatten, dass sie mit einer Art Fahrstuhl fuhren. Man kann in der Ausstellung einige kurze Videos ansehen. Außerdem gibt es auch eine – italienische – Präsentation mit Fotos und Schriftstücken. Hier geht es um das Gesetz zum „Schutz der italienischen Rasse“ vom 17. November 1938, mit dem Juden umfangreichen Verboten unterworfen wurden.
Survivors reported that back then they had had no idea that they were riding a kind of elevator. In the exhibition you can watch a few short videos. Furthermore there is also an – Italian – display of photos and documents. This here is about the law for the “protection of the Italian race” from 17. November 1938, which subjected Jews to extensive limitations.
Auch in Italien hat man mit Stolz verkündet: arischer Laden.
Also in Italy it was proudly proclaimed: Aryan store.
In mehreren Videos wird klar, dass die „Gleichgültigkeit“, mit der den Opfern des Faschismus begegnet wurde, elementar darin war, dass das ganze System funktioniert hat.
In several videos it becomes clear that the “indifference” with which the victims of fascism were greeted, was elemental for the whole system functioning.
Die Ausstellung ist sehr interessant und äußerst bedrückend. Dazu hat das Nachmittagswetter gepasst …
The exhibition is very interesting and most oppressive. The afternoon weather fit with that …
… und in der Nacht wurden wir dann von lautem Krach geweckt: Blitz und Donner, prasselnder Regen und große Hagelkörner. In den Nachrichten wurden die umfangreichen Schäden, die der Sturm in Mailand verursacht hatte, erwähnt.
… and during the night we were woken by a loud noise: Thunder and lightning, torrential rain and large hail stones. In the news the extensive damages that the storm caused in Milan were mentioned.
