Heute sind wir früh los, damit wir am Dom sind, bevor er für die Besucher geöffnet wird. Wir waren bei weitem nicht die einzigen mit dieser Idee 😊 (Trotzdem, später waren noch viel mehr Leute da, war also schon die richtige Entscheidung.) – Das Foto ist nicht vom Morgen, da steht die Sonne genau hinter dem Dom, nicht so schön …
Today we left early, so that we would be at the cathedral before it gets opened for the visitors. We were far from alone with that idea 😊 (Still, later on there were even more people, so it was the right decision for sure.) – The photo is not of that morning, at that time the sun is right behind the cathedral, not so nice …
Ein paar kurze Details: Er gehört zu den größten Kirchen der Welt, hatte ein Bauzeit von über 300 Jahren (waren wir schnell mit dem Berliner Flughafen!) und wurde erst unter Napoleon fertiggestellt.
A few short details: It is one of the largest churches of the world, the time it took for its construction was over 300 years (were we ever fast with the Berlin airport!) and only under Napoleon was it finished.
Der Baubeginn war 1386, und 1805 ließ sich Napoleon hier zum König von Italien krönen, da war die Fassade immer noch nicht ganz fertig!
The start of construction was in 1386, and 1805 Napoleon had himself crowned here as king of Italy, at that time the façade was still not quite finished!
Es gibt unheimlich viel zu sehen. Zum Beispiel hier links die Dame, „La Legge Nuova“ – „Das neue Gesetz“, die sehr an die Freiheitsstatue erinnert.
There is just so much to see. For example here on the left the lady, “La Legge Nuova“ – “The New Law”, which looks a lot like the statue of liberty.
Oder ihn hier, von dem man nicht recht weiß, was für ein Tier das sein soll. Sieht auf jeden Fall sehr friedfertig aus.
Or this one here, of which you don’t quite know what kind of animal it is supposed to be. In any case, it looks very peaceful.
Aber es gibt auch eine Menge Szenen, die nicht so brav sind …
But there are also a lot of scenes that are not so innocent …
Die Details an den riesigen Türen sind beeindruckend …
The details of the huge doors are impressive …
… wie auch innen an den Säulen.

Auch hier gibt es durchaus gruselige Dinge: der gehäutete Heilige Batholomäus zum Beispiel.
Here as well you do find gruesome things: Saint Bartholomew Flayed for example.
Man findet verschiedene Zahlen, aber es sind wohl auf jeden Fall weit über 3.000 Statuen von Heiligen, Tieren und Monstern zu sehen. Außerdem hat der Dom 135 Türme.
You find different numbers, but it seems to be certain that there are more than 3.000 statues of holy people, animals and monsters to be seen. Furthermore the cathedral has 135 spires.
Und dabei sind alleine die Farben des Gesteins schon wunderschön.
And to think that even just the colours of the stone are so beautiful.

Aber hierfür würde sich auch stundenlanges Anstehen lohnen: Auf das Dach des Doms muss man, wenn man nicht unter Höhenangst leidet!
But for this it would even be worth to stand in line for hours: You must go up to the roof of the cathedral, unless you suffer from fear of heights!

Natürlich hat man auch einen guten Blick über die Stadt … hier auf den Torre Velasca, gebaut in den 1950ern.

Alles konnte man auch nicht sehen, weil viel mit Gerüsten und so abgedeckt war.
