Warum sind wir überhaupt in Texas? Wegen der ringförmigen Sonnenfinsternis. Aber es ist furchtbar wolkig heute morgen.
Why are we in Texas at all? Because of the annular solar eclipse. But this morning it is terribly cloudy.
Wir sind extra in Corpus Christi, weil das Ereignis hier am längsten zu sehen sein wird. Aber es ist auch noch furchtbar windig!
We are especially in Corpus Christi, because the event will be visible here for the longest time. But then it is also terribly windy!
Wir haben eine nette Ecke gefunden, von wo wir in Ruhe den Himmel betrachten konnten … aber all diese Wolken … oft sah man überhaupt nichts.
We found a nice little corner from where we could watch the sky without being bothered … but all those clouds … often you couldn’t see a thing.
Wir haben neben den Sonnenfinsternisbrillen auch spezielle Folien für die Kameras.
Next to the solar eclipse glasses we also have special foil for the cameras.
Wenn die Sonne nicht mitspielt, dann sehen wir uns eben die Tierwelt an!
If the sun won’t play along, then we will just watch the fauna!
Wir sind dann ein paar Meilen nach Osten gefahren, da war der Himmel blau und der Wind nicht ganz so schlimm.
We then drove East for a few miles, there the sky was blue and the wind not quite as bad.
Hier gibt es auch einen wunderbar klaren Blick auf die Sonne.
And here you have a wonderful unobstructed view of the sun.
Durch die Folie sieht man jetzt schon nur noch ganz wenig Sonne …
Through the foil you now see only a very little bit of the sun …
… und dann schiebt sich der Mond ganz davor.
… and then the moon is fully in front of the sun.
Wir haben gelernt, dass es irgendwann nur noch ringförmige Sonnenfinsternisse geben wird, weil der Mond sich immer weiter von der Erde entfernt.
We learned that in a while there will only ever be annular solar eclipses, because the moon is moving ever further away from Earth.
Wir haben auch aufgepasst, dass wir Abstand halten …
We also made sure that we kept our distance …
Wie man sehen konnte, wurde es nur unwesentlich dunkel.
As you can see it got only marginally dark.
Passend zum Tag waren wir bei Sonnenblumen gelandet.
Fitting for this day we had chosen a spot near some sunflowers.
Ja, und dann war nach fünf Minuten der Ring schon wieder durchbrochen …
Yes, and then after five minutes the ring was broken again already …
Eine Weile später sind wir dann zu der ersten Stelle zurückgeflogen.
A bit later then we flew back to our first spot.
Hier war es nach wie vor sehr windig, aber die Wolken waren weg.

Neben den Pelikanen haben wir auch Reiher und Ibisse gesehen.
Next to the pelicans we also saw herons and ibises.
Natürlich haben wir auch weiterhin die Sonne im Blick behalten …
Of course we also kept checking up on the sun …
… immer mehr ist wieder zu sehen.
… more and more is to be seen again.
… aber damit waren wir ziemlich alleine – um uns herum hatten die Leute besseres zu tun.
… but we were pretty alone with that – around us people had better things to do.
Es gibt ja auch so viel zu sehen … ein Defin hat immer mal seine Rückenflosse gezeigt.
But then then there is so much to see … a dolphin time and again showed its fin.
Pelikane waren auf der Jagd …
Pelicans were hunting …
… und da ist der Delfin wieder.
… and there the dolphin is again.
Und wer war wohl hier unterwegs?
And who might have been walking here?
Dann kamen die Wolken wieder … und der Mond war fast vorbei …
Then the clouds came back … and the moon was almost past …
… also Abflug!
… so take-off!
