Der Spitzname des Flugzeugträgers ist „blauer Geist“: Die USS Lexington hatte nie die übliche Tarnfarbe erhalten. Stattdessen ist sie grau, was aus der Ferne blau erscheint. Mehrfach hatten die Japaner im 2. Weltkrieg berichtet, dass sie gesunken sei, aber immer tauchte das Schiff wieder auf … Wir hatten es vorgestern vom Highway aus gesehen.
The nickname of the aircraft carrier is “Blue Ghost”: The USS Lexington never got the usual camouflage colours. Instead the ship was painted grey, which from afar looks blue. Several times the Japanese during World War II reported that it had been sunk, but it always showed up again … We had spotted the ship from the highway, day before yesterday.

1942 bis 1991 war die USS Lexington im Einsatz. Dies sind die letzen beiden Flaggen, die auf dem Schiff aufgezogen wurden: „N“ und „C“, zusammen ist das ein Notsignal, welches gezeigt wurde, weil der blaue Geist „unterwegs war, im Schlepp und ohne Antrieb“, auf dem Weg nach Corpus Christi.

Die Piloten hätten nach einem Umbau des Schiffes sonst in voller Montur drei Leitern hochklettern müssen, um zu den Fliegern zu kommen. Also wurde die Rolltreppe eingebaut, in den frühen 1950ern. Auch interessant: Die USS Lexington war das erste Schiff in der Geschichte der U.S.-Marine, auf dem es Frauen als Teil der Besatzung gab (18. August 1980).
After a remodeling of the ship, the pilots would have had to climb three ladders wearing full gear, to reach the planes. Thus the escalator was installed, in the early 1950s. Also interesting: The USS Lexington was the first ship in U.S. naval history to have women stationed aboard as crew members (18 August 1980).

Wir sind erst die Küste entlang, zum Beispiel durch Edna.
We first went along the coast, through Edna for example.
Dann nach Schulenburg, wo wir uns eine „bemalte Kirche“ ansehen wollten.
Then to Schulenburg, where we wanted to see a “painted church”.
Deutsche und andere Immigranten, die im 19. Jahrhundert nach Texas kamen, bemalten ihre Kirchen innen. – Doch leider war die Kirche geschlossen, also konnten wir nur durch das Türfenster sehen.

Viele deutsche Inschriften haben wir gesehen, und die Fenster sind sehr schön.
