Nach unserem „Skiausflug“ sind wir nach Te Anau gefahren, haben an der Touristen-Info einen Abendausflug gebucht und sind dann in unser Hotel.

After our „skiing trip“, we drove to Te Anau, there booked an evening excursion at the tourist information, and then went to our hotel.

Da haben wir uns ein bisschen ausgeruht, haben gelesen und danach ein Nickerchen gemacht. Danach gabs was zu essen im Olive Tree Café (sehr zu empfehlen!). Und dann sind wir zurück an den See, denn wir hatten eine Tour zur Höhle der Glühwürmchen gebucht! Dazu mussten wir erst mit der Fähre über den See.

There we had a rest, first we read, then we had a nap. After that we had a bite to eat at the Olive Tree Café (highly recommended!). And then we went back to the lake, because we had booked a tour of the glow-worm caves! For that we first had to cross the lake with the ferry.

Am anderen Ufer angekommen, war es schon recht dunkel. Wir waren um 21:30 erst losgefahren. Die späte Tour war die einzige, die für gestern noch Plätze hatte … und da wir noch nicht wussten, wie unser Ausflug vom 7.1. ablaufen würde, haben wir die gebucht.

When we arrived at the other shore, it was quite dark already. We had left at 9:30 pm. This late tour was the only one that yesterday still had open bookings … and since at that point we did not know yet how our excursion of January 7 would go, we booked that one.

Zunächst haben wir einen kurzen Film gesehen, und dazu wurde uns einiges über die „Glühwürmchen“ erzählt. Das sind die Larven der Pilzmücke. Sie spinnen klebrige Fäden und locken dann fliegende Insekten mit ihrem Licht an.

Now we first saw a short film, and with that we were taught a few things about the „glow-worms“. Those are the larvae of the fungus gnat. They spin sticky threads and then lure flying insects with their light.

Die Fäden hängen von der Decke. Und hier seht ihr das ausgewachsene Insekt, das übrigens keinen Mund hat, keinen Magen, und auch nicht sticht.

The threads hang from the ceiling. And here you can see the adult insect which, by the way, has no mouth, no stomach and does not sting you.

Danach durften wir in die Höhle. Erst sind wir ein bisschen gegangen. Es ist eine sehr junge Höhle, nur 12.000 Jahre alt, es gibt nur winzigste Stalaktiten. Aber dafür rauscht das Wasser wild durch die Gänge, toll! Und dann sind wir in ein Boot gestiegen, die wenigen schwachen Lichter wurden auch noch ausgemacht, und in der Dunkelheit sind wir unter den Glühwürmchen durchgefahren. Beeindruckend!

Afterwards we got to go into the cave. First we walked a bit. It is a very young cave, only 12.000 years old, there are only the tiniest of stalactites. But the water rushes through the canals, great! And then we got into a boat, the last few weak lights got turned off, and in the dark we rode along underneath the glow-worms. Impressive!

Dann gabs noch einen kurzen Spaziergang in den Wald mit Vortrag über Takahes (ein Vogel, der fast ausgestorben war), danach gings zurück mit der Fähre über den See. Der Sternenhimmel war atemberaubend!

Then we went on a short walk into the woods, with a lecture about Takahes (a bird that was almost extinct), then with the ferry we went back across the lake. The starry sky was breathtaking!

23:40 waren wir wieder hier in Te Anau. Da waren wir zu müde für Einträge hier auf unserer Reiseseite …

Hallo mal wieder! Gestern wurde es spät, daher erst heute die nächsten Einträge von uns … Wir waren traurig, dass wir Brenda und Frank verlassen mussten, haben uns aber auch auf unser nächstes Ziel gefreut: Te Anau. Damit die Fahrt dorthin nicht zu langweilig wird, haben wir beschlossen, unterwegs die „Remarkables“ anzusehen, ein Skigebiet. Und wieder war die Gegend wunderschön. (wir wären schnell fertig, wenn wir nur hässliche Ecken besuchen würden … gibts die hier?)

Hello again! Yesterday it got quite late, so only today you get new entries from us … We were sad that we had to leave Brenda and Frank, but we were also looking forward to our next destination: Te Anau. So that the drive there does not get too boring, we decided to look at the „Remarkables“ on the way, a skiing area. And once again the landscape was beautiful. (we would be done in no time, if we only went to ugly corners here … do they have them at all?)

Torben war sich nicht sicher, ob es denn Sinn machen würde, überhaupt in die Berge hoch zu fahren, weil die sich wieder zunehmend in Wolken gehüllt haben, aber ich habe auf unser Glück vertraut …

Torben was not sure whether it even made sense to drive up into the mountains, since those were more and more covered in clouds, but I had faith in our good luck …

Und – tada! – nach ein paar Fotostopps (zum Beispiel am „Windy Point“, und der heißt nicht umsonst so!) kamen wir oben an, und die Sonne ließ sich auch ein bisschen sehen. Natürlich gab es all die üblichen Ski-Anlagen, sogar eine Möglichkeit für Anfänger, komplett unter Dach nach oben zu kommen.

And – tada! – after a few photo stops (at „windy point“ for example, and it does not carry that name for nothing!) we arrived at the top,and the sun also showed up for a bit. Of course there were all the usual skiing facilities, even a way for beginners to go uphill completely under cover.

Irgendwie sah das alles zwar spannend, aber auch traurig und verlassen aus, so ganz ohne Schnee …

Somehow the whole place looked quite interesting, no question, but also sad and abandoned, completely without snow …

Aber kalt wars! Das Auto meinte, 4°C. Aber die Ausblicke waren toll, es hat sich gelohnt, auch wenn die Straße nicht die einladendste war.

But it was cold! The car said 4°C. But the views were spectacular, it was worth it, even if the road was not exactly inviting.

Aber wir haben ja erstens Glück, und zweitens saß am Berghang ein Drache, der hat unsere Fahrt bewacht …

But we are principally lucky, and then there was a dragon sitting on the mountainside, watching over our drive …

Wir haben auf dem Rückweg noch einmal die Aussicht genossen und Flugzeugen beim Abheben zugesehen.

On the way back we once again enjoyed the view and also watched planes take off.

Und kaum waren wir wieder in der Ebene, kamen auch die Wolken wieder.

And no sooner were we back down from the mountains, than the clouds came back.

Guten Morgen! Die letzten beiden Tage haben wir viel unternommen und hatten dann nette Abende mit Brenda und Frank, daher war für Einträge hier keine Zeit … Aber jetzt kommt die Zusammenfassung! Vorgestern mussten wir uns erst um ein paar Sachen kümmern: die nächsten Tage planen und Unterkünfte buchen – offensichtlich müssen wir hier früher dran sein als in Australien. Dann haben wir uns das „Chinese settlement“ angesehen. Als hier Gold gefunden wurde, kamen auch Chinesen. Sie wurden angeheuert, um die Gebiete, die die Europäer schon durchsucht hatten, noch einmal zu durchkämmen.

Good morning! The last two days we saw a lot and then had nice evenings with Brenda and Frank, that is why there was no time to make entries here … But now you get the summary! The day before yesterday we had to take care of a few things: plan the next few days and book lodgings – obviously here we have to plan ahead more than in Australia. Then we went to see the „Chinese settlement“. When gold was found here, also Chinese people came. They were hired to pick over regions that had been abandoned by the Europeans already.

Gern gesehen waren sie trotzdem nicht. Sie lebten abseits des Ortes in jämmerlichen Hütten. Und natürlich hatten die Weißen Angst, dass die anders sind und ihnen alles wegnehmen … das ändert sich wohl nie.

Well received they were definitely not. They lived a bit away from the town in  miserable huts. And of course the white people were afraid, those Chinese were different and would take everything … some things will never change.

Und gestern war dann ein sehr voller Tag! Wir sind um halb acht aus dem Haus und abends um zehn waren wir wieder da. Zuerst sind wir hier in der Gegend gewandert. Zum Anfang die leichte Wanderung am Fluss entlang.

And yesterday was then a very full day! We left the house at seven thirty and at ten in the evening we were back here. First we did some hiking here in the area. To start with the easy walk along the river.

Und dann haben wir den Sawpit Gully Trail gemacht. Da gehts erst wieder am Fluss entlang, dann an Schieferwänden vorbei immer höher in die Berge.

And then we did the Sawpit Gully trail. That again follows the river at first, then along slate walls it climbs ever higher into the mountains.

Viele schöne Blumen waren unterwegs zu bewundern, vor allem, wenn man außer Atem eine Pause brauchte, war das eine gute Ausrede für einen Stop.

Many beautiful flowers we got to see on the way. Especially when we needed to catch our breath, they were a good excuse for a stop.

Und es gab tolle Ausblicke, einen nach dem nächsten. Auf die wolkenverhangenen Berge und dann auf den Ort und den See. Nur leider kam die Sonne nicht heraus …

And there were great views, one after the next. Of the cloud covered mountain and then of the town and the lake. Unfortunately the sun did not make an appearance though …

Nach fünf Stunden wandern haben wir uns dann eine Pause gegönnt: wir haben Gold gewaschen. Beim „Unterricht“ haben wir ein bisschen was gefunden, nachher am Fluss hatten wir kein Glück … gefroren haben wir!

After five hours of hiking we then allowed ourselves a break: we panned for gold. At the „lesson“ we did find a little bit, later at the river we had no luck … but we got pretty cold!

Dann haben wir uns ins Auto gesetzt und sind nach Glenorchy gefahren. Auch da gabs wieder tolle Ausblicke, rundum, egal, wo man hingesehen hat.

Then we got into the car and drove to Glenorchy. There again the landscape was beautiful, great views no matter which direction you looked.

Wir kamen nicht so weit, wie wir wollten, der Weg war etwas feucht … aber das ist in Ordnung.

We did not get as far as we had planned, the path was a bit wet … but that is okay.

Dafür haben wir unterwegs viele Raubvögel gesehen, Sumpfweihen waren das wohl. Leider waren sie für gute Fotos meist zu weit weg. Und der, der direkt vor uns in die Höhe gestiegen ist, hat uns so überrascht … Aber wir haben ihn toll gesehen!

To make up for that we saw many predatory birds on the way, swamp harriers probably. Unfortunately they were too far away for good photos most of the time. And the one that rose from the ground directly in front of us, so surprised us … But we saw it wonderfully!

Und wer sich über den Titel wundert: Wir haben jetzt in Arrowtown und Glenorchy schon etliche Ecken gesehen, wo der Herr der Ringe gedreht wurde.

And for those who wonder about the title: In Arrowtown and Glenorchy we have now seen several spots already where Lord of the Rings was filmed.

Und jetzt verabschieden wir uns mit einem Blumengruß von Brenda und Frank … leider! Wir haben es hier rundum genossen!!!

And now we say goodby to Brenda and Frank with a flower picture … unfortunately! We enjoyed every minute of our stay!!!

Um sechs aufgestanden, ab zum Flughafen … Und dann mussten wir Robin Lebewohl sagen … Tschüss, Melbourne, aber: Robin, wir kommen wieder!!!

We got up at six, off to the airport … And there we had to say goodbye to Robin … Farewell, Melbourne, but: Robin, we will come back!!!

Dann der Flug nach Queenstown, dort den Leihwagen abholen … ha! Denkste. Wir hatten Abholung Queenstown, Abgabe Auckland gebucht. Geht aber nicht! Wir müssen in Picton den Wagen abgeben, die Fähre nehmen, in Wellington einen neuen Wagen in Emfpang kriegen … naja, wir haben uns schließlich geeinigt. Dann sind wir nach Queenstown reingefahren, auf der Suche nach einem Zimmer. Fast nirgends etwas frei, das einzige Zimmer, das wir gekriegt hätten, war uns a) zu teuer b) zu grau und muffig und c) war die Dame an der Rezeption sich zu sicher, dass wir ja doch wiederkommen würden, weil wir einfach nichts anderes finden würden!

Then the flight to Queenstown, there pick up the rental car … ha! Not that fast. We had booked pickup in Queenstown, drop-off in Auckland. But they don’t offer that! We have to drop off the car at Picton, take the ferry, and then they provide a different car in Wellington … oh well, we finally did come to an agreement. Then we drove into Queenstown, looking for a room. Almost no vacancies, the only room that we could have rented was for our taste a) to expensive b) to grey and musty and c) the lady at the reception was just too sure that we would come back anyhow, because we would just not be able to find any other rooms!

Wir sind dann nach Arrowtown, das ist in der Nähe und stand auf unserer Liste von Orten, die wir sehen wollen. Aber auch da, nichts frei. Wir sind zum „Shades of Arrowtown“. Da war zwar auch das „kein Zimmer frei“ Schild draußen, aber wir dachten, vielleicht kann man uns da sagen, wo vielleicht was frei wäre … Tja, Brenda hat im Internet gesucht und herumtelefoniert, Frank hat gleichzeitig auf seinem Handy gesucht, aber gefunden haben sie nichts. Sie haben uns dann ganz lieb Zugang zu ihrem WLAN gegeben, damit wir selber suchen könnten, aber dazu sind wir nicht mehr gekommen. Brenda kam zu uns und meinte, schaut mal. – Wir wohnen jetzt bei ihnen im Haus, sie vermieten uns das Zimmer des Sohnes, der nicht da ist. Ist das der Hammer, oder ist das der Hammer?

We then went to Arrowtown, that is close by and was one of the towns on our list of places to see. But there as well, nothing to be had. We went to the „Shades of Arrowtown“. They also had the „no vacancies“ sign out, but we thought, they might be able to tell us, where else we could find something … Well, Brenda searched on the web and called around, while Frank in parallel searched on his cell phone, but they did not find anything. They then very nicely gave us access to their WiFi, so we could look on our own, but we did not get that far. Brenda walked up to us and said, take a look. – We now live in their house, we are renting the room of the son who is not home. Isn’t that just the greatest???

GUTEN MORGEN! (gestern haben wir den Eintrag nicht fertig gekriegt) Wir fühlen uns hier sehr, sehr wohl. Danke Brenda und Frank, Ihr seid ganz tolle Menschen! – Und überhaupt wimmelt es im Ort vor lauter netten Leuten … Nicht zu vergessen Jethro!

GOOD MORNING! (yesterday we did not manage to finish the entry) We feel very much at home here. Thank you, Brenda and Frank, you are really wonderful people! – And the whole town seems to be filled with nice folks … And let us not forget Jethro!

Gestern abend stand Torben am Geldautomaten, während daneben der Herr vom Liquor Store den Behälter mit den Wasserflaschen aufgefüllt hat. Da ich ja nur dumm rumstand, hab ich geholfen – gleich haben wir eine Flasche kühles Wasser geschenkt bekommen!

Yesterday evening Torben was standing at the ATM, while next to him the gentleman from the liquor store stocked the container with the water bottles. And since I was just standing around doing nothing, I helped a bit – and right away we got a cool bottle of water for free!

Als nächstes sind wir an der Apotheke vorbei. Ich trage ja Kontaktlinsen und ich habe mich zu Hause informiert, dass es die Linsenflüssigkeit, die ich benutze, in Australien und Neuseeland gibt. Tja, Australien wusste davon nix. Aber hier haben wir meine Marke gefunden. Der Apotheker war höchst amüsiert, dass in seinem Geschäft jemand so jubelt …

Next we passed the pharmacy. Now, I wear contact lenses, and at home I read on the internet that the lense solution that I use is available in Australia and in New Zealand. Well, Australia knew nothing of that. But here we found my brand. The pharmacist was quite amused that somebody would so cheer a product in his store …

Guten Morgen! Wir sitzen am nächsten Flughafen … gestern sind wir von Hobart/Tasmanien zurück nach Melbourne geflogen. Dann durften wir noch einmal bei Robin übernachten – und natürlich musste viel Bohnanza gespielt werden. Dazwischen hieß es Wäsche waschen und Koffer packen. Ja, und heute früh hat Robin uns dann zurück zum Flughafen gefahren, jetzt warten wir auf den Flug nach Queenstown/Neuseeland. Mehr dann von dort …

Good morning! We are sitting at the next airport … yesterday we flew back from Hobart/Tasmania to Melbourne. There we were allowed to stay at Robin’s place once more – and of course a lot of Bohnanza needed to be played. In between we had to do some laundry and pack our backpacks. Yes, and this morning Robin drove us back to the airport, now we are waiting for the flight to Queenstown/New Zealand. More once we are there …

Gähn … heute wird das ein kurzer Eintrag! Wir sind früh aufgestanden, dann 2,5 Stunden an die Südspitze der Insel gefahren. Von Cockle Creek aus haben wir dann die Wanderung zum South East Cape gemacht. Hin und rück, mit Fotopausen natürlich, hat sechs Stunden gedauert. Und dann wieder herfahren (mit Essenspause), wir waren erst nach neun wieder hier. Aber die Wanderung war es wert. Die Landschaft ist sehr abwechslungsreich auf diesem Stück Weg. Regenwald, Eukalyptus, Heide, Moor …

Yawn … today’s entry will be a short one! We got up early, then drove 2.5 hours to the Southern end of the island. From Cockle Creek we did the hike to South East Cape. There and back, with a few photo stops of course, took us six hours. And then the drive back here (with a dinner break), we did not get to our bed and breakfast until after nine. But the hike was worth it. The landscape changes often on this path. Rainforest, eukalyptus, heath, swamp …

Tiere haben wir dieses Mal nicht so viele gesehen, aber ganz ohne gehts natürlich nicht. Eine tolle Raupe … und viele Möwen gabs.

Animals we did not see that many this time, but of course we cannot do completely without. A great caterpillar … and many gulls we saw.

Ansonsten haben wir viele verschiedene Arten Pilze gesehen, und kleine Blüten in den tollsten Formen … und davon träumen wir jetzt!

We also saw many different types of mushrooms, and little flowers in spectacular shapes … and all that we will visit in our dreams now!

Wir hatten gestern entschieden, wofür wir heute die meiste Zeit verwenden würden … Aber wir hatten gedacht, davor schaffen wir noch eine kleine Wanderung zu schönen Wasserfällen in der Nähe. Tja … wir sind durch die Wälder gefahren, immer den Anweisungen des Flyers von der Tourist-Info folgend, gefunden haben wir den Wanderweg nicht. Frustriert haben wir dann nur eine Weile Käfern beim Sex zugesehen und sind wieder umgekehrt ….

Yesterday we had decided what we would spend most of our time on today … but we had thought that before that we would manage a short hike to nice waterfalls in the area. Well … we drove through the woods, always following the instructions of the flyer that we had gotten at the tourist info – we did not find the hike. Pretty frustrated, we only watched some beetles have sex for a while, and then turned around …

Und dann sind wir gefahren … und gefahren … und gefahren. 3,5 Stunden! Bis kurz vor Derwent Bridge. Wir hatten die Tage auf Tasmanien in Deutschland geplant, mit Hilfe des Reiseführers: Übernachtungen in George Town, auf Bruny Island und dann in Cygnet. Doch in Brisbane haben Kay und Barry uns von „The Wall“ erzählt, und da mussten wir einfach hin, egal, wie lange wir fahren mussten!

And then we drove … and drove … and drove. 3.5 hours! Almost all the way to Derwent Bridge. We had planned our days on Tasmania in Germany already, with the help of the guide book: With stays in George Town, on Bruny Island and then in Cygnet. But in Brisbane Kay and Barry told us of „The Wall“, and we just had to see it, no matter how long we had to drive!

Nur … Fotos machen darf man nicht. (Und da drinnen ein Schild hing: Kinder, die sich schlecht benehmen, werden hier nicht geduldet! hab ich mich brav benommen …) Aber Ihr könnt Euch die Werke von Greg Duncan selber ansehen: http://thewalltasmania.com.au  – Was dieser Mann aus Holz schnitzt, ist nicht zu fassen. (Ted – das musst Du Dir irgendwann ansehen!) Da ist zum Beispiel eine Kappe, zerknautscht und offensichtlich abgetragen liegt sie auf einem Werkzeug. Daneben ein Schild „Do not touch“. Und man denkt sich: brauch ich auch gar nicht anfassen, ich weiß, wie es sich anfühlen würde, weich und geschmeidig, wie altes Leder … dabei weiß man, das Teil ist aus Holz!

Only … no cameras allowed. (And since inside there was a sign: Badly behaved children will not be tolerated! I did behave …) But you can take a look at Greg Duncan’s work yourselves: http://thewalltasmania.com.au  – What this man carves out of wood is just unbelievable. (Ted – you must see that one day!) For example, there is a cap, crumpled and obviously well worn it lies on some tool. And next to it a sign „Do not touch“. And you think: I don’t need to touch it anyhow, I know how it would feel, soft and smooth, like old leather … even though you know that is is made of wood!

Ja, und dann sind wir wieder nach Cygnet zurückgefahren. Diesmal haben wir uns ein paar Foto-Pausen gegönnt. Die Landschaft war einfach zu schön und sehr abwechslungsreich. Und dann haben wir auch dreimal Schnabeligel gesehen!

Yes, and then we drove back to Cygnet. This time we took some photo breaks. The landscape was just too beautiful and very varied. And then we also saw echidnas, three in all!

Um 21:40 waren wir endlich wieder in unserem Zimmer. Und jetzt ist es „erst“ halb zwölf, aber wir sind müüüüüüüüüde. Und für Euch sind wir ja eh zu früh … also: Allen ein rundum wundervolles 2018!!!

At 9:40 pm we were finally back in our room. And now it is „only“ eleven thirty, but we are tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired. And for you guys we are too early anyhow … so: To all of you an all around wonderful 2018!!!

So, die letzte Etappe auf Tasmanien hat begonnen, wir sind jetzt in Cygnet. Doch bevor wir Bruny Island verlassen haben, sind wir noch an das Südende gefahren und haben uns den Leuchtturm angesehen. Die Führung war sehr interessant!

So, the last part of our stay on Tasmania has begun, we are now in Cygnet. But before we left Bruny Island, we went to the southern end of the island and looked at the lighthouse. The tour was very interesting!

Wir durften sogar auf den „Balkon“. Da gab es tolle Ausblicke, und es war sehr, sehr windig!

We were even allowed to go onto the „balcony“. There were great views to be had, and it was very, very windy!

Auf dem Weg zurück zum Auto haben wir mal wieder einen „neuen“ Vogel entdeckt: einen Weißaugen-Honigfresser.

On the way back to the car we once again discovered a „new“ bird: a New Holland Honeyeater.

Ja, der Weg zurück zum Auto. Es gibt einen Parkplatz, der weiter vom Leuchtturm entfernt ist, und einen näheren. Natürlich fahren alle zu letzterem. Aber Torben hat mich beim ersten rausgelassen, weil ich ein paar Fotos machen wollte. Und was hab ich da entdeckt? Einen wunderschönen Weg hinunter zum Strand. Den haben wir uns jetzt angesehen. Und wir waren die einzigen! Der ganze Strand hat uns gehört, und wir haben diesen schönen Fleck ausgiebig genossen.

Yes, the way back to the car. There is a parking lot that is farther away from the lighthouse, and one that is closer. Of course everybody drives to the latter. But Torben dropped me off at the first one because I wanted to take a few pictures. And what did I discover? A wonderful path down to the beach. And that is what we now checked out. We were the only people doing so! The whole beach was ours alone, and we enjoyed this beautiful spot to the fullest.

Und dann haben wir uns auf den Rückweg gemacht. Die Fährstation ist ganz im Norden, und wir waren ja im Süden. Bruny Island besteht sozusagen aus zwei Inseln, die durch einen dünnen Landstrich verbunden sind: The Neck. Da gibt es einen schönen Aussichtspunkt, von dem aus man in alle Himmelsrichtungen tolle Ausblicke hat. Nur der Wind war wieder störend …

And then we started the way back. The ferry terminal is right up North, and we were down at the South end. Bruny Island consists, so to speak, of two islands that are connected by a thin stretch of land: The Neck. And right there, you find a pretty lookout, from which you have great views in all directions. Only the wind was bothersome, once again …

Tschüß, Bruny Island! Es hätte noch viel mehr zu sehen gegeben, aber mehr Zeit haben wir leider nicht. Aber wir wollen wiederkommen …

Goodbye, Bruny Island! There would have been so much more to see, but this was all the time we had. We want to come back though …

Das heutige Gute-Nacht-Bild: unsere Unterkunft für die nächsten Tage … Bad am anderen Ende des Ganges (aber es gehört immerhin nur uns – für unser Zimmer war kein Platz mehr für das Bad direkt da, wo es hingehört …), viele geblümte Teppiche … Naja, es war eh klar, dass an unseren Palast so schnell nichts herankommt!

Today’s good-night-picture: our lodgings for the next few days … bathroom at the other end of the hallway (at least it is ours alone – for our room there was no room for the bathroom where it would have been supposed to go), many flowery carpets … Oh well, it was clear that nothing would come close to our palace for a while!

Heute sind wir nach einem feinen Frühstück (frische Himbeeren) zu den „Bruny Island Cruises“, um eine Tour zu buchen. Wir hatten auf die um elf heute vormittag gehofft, aber die war ausgebucht. Also nachmittags um zwei! Zurück zu unserem Palast, da haben wir uns den Laptop geschnappt und sind zum „General Store“, da gibts nämlich WLAN. Den Eintrag für gestern eingestellt, ein paar Mails und andere Sachen angesehen, dann für heute abend eingekauft, fertig. Danach gings für ein Stündchen zurück in den Palast. Wir konnten in Ruhe einen Happen essen und ein bisschen lesen, bis es dann Zeit für die Bootstour wurde.

Today after a delicious breakfast (fresh raspberries) we went to the “Bruny Island Cruises” to book a tour. We had hoped to do the one at eleven this morning, but that was already fully booked. So this afternoon at two! Back to our palace, there we just grabbed the laptop and drove to the “General Store”, because there they have WiFi. We posted the entry for yesterday, checked some mails and other stuff, then got groceries for tonight’s supper, done. Afterwards back to the palace for a quiet hour. There we could nibble some snacks and read a bit, until it was time for the cruise.

Es waren tolle 2,5 Stunden! Alleine die Fahrt an der Hauptinsel entlang, mit den kleinen Inseln drum herum, mit den tollen Klippen und Höhlen, war es wert.

It was a great 2,5 hours! Even just the tour along the main island, with the little islands all around, with the great cliffs and caves, was well worth it.

Wir haben natürlich auch Tiere gesehen … zuerst die Kormorane (Schwarzgesichtscharbe).

Of course we also saw animals … first were the black-faced cormorants.

Aber der Hauptgrund für die Fahrt waren ja die Pelzrobben, und die haben wir dann auch gesehen, in Hülle und Fülle.

But the main reason for the trip were the fur seals, and we did see them, in quite large numbers.

Doch nur ein paar Vögel und Robben? Nein, das lässt sich toppen!

But only a few birds and seals? No, we can certainly top that!

Eine ganze Weile sind eine Menge Delfine um uns herum geschwommen und gesprungen. Das war toll! Zum Abschluss gabs dann noch einen Albatros, dann war die Fahrt zu Ende. Wir hatten extra die Wanderstiefel im Auto, die haben wir jetzt angezogen und sind noch auf eine kurze Wandertour.

For quite a while quite a few dolphins swam and jumped around us. That was great! To finish the cruise, we saw an albatross, then the tour was over. Thinking ahead, we had earlier put our hiking boots into the car, so now we put them on and went on a short hike.

Wir haben im hohen, stacheligen Gras immer wieder so ein Geräusch gehört. Als ob ein Kind da durchläuft und links und rechts mit einem Stock auf das Gras einschlägt. Dann war wieder Stille, dann war das Geräusch wieder da … Und endlich haben wir es gesehen: sein Rücken war immer wieder kurz zu sehen, dann weg, wie es so durch das Gras hüpfte: ein Wallaby. Es beschrieb einen weiten Bogen, erst von uns weg, dann in Richtung unseres Wanderpfades. Es sprang auf den Pfad, in unsere Richtung – und blieb wie angewurzelt stehen. Offensichtlich hätten wir nicht da sein sollen! Es schaute uns für ein paar Sekunden an, dann drehte es sich um und hüpfte davon … Großartig!!!

We kept hearing this sound in the tall, spiky grass, as if a kid was walking through, hitting the grass with a stick, left and right. Then there was once again silence, then the sound came back … And finally we saw it: the back of it appearing and disappearing as it jumped through the grass: a wallaby. It made a wide arc first away from us, then towards our hiking trail, jumped onto the trail, in our direction – and stopped dead in its tracks. Obviously we were not meant to be there! It looked at us for a few seconds, then turned around and hopped off … Great!!!

Zum Abschluss haben wir noch einen Kookaburra gesehen, dann gings zurück in den Palast. Und da haben wir wieder viel gesehen. – Haben wir erwähnt, dass die Wallabys sich hier abends nur so tummeln? Und heute hab ich endlich einen von diesen tollen kleinen blauen Vögeln gut erwischt, bitte sehr (es ist ein „Prachtstaffelschwanz“):

After that we saw a kookaburra, then we went back to the palace. And there we once again saw lots. – Did we mention that here quite a few wallabies come out in the evenings? And tonight I finally got a good shot of one of those great little blue birds, here you are (it is a „superb fairywren“):
