The Big Journey

So, ich schreibe dies in unserem Palast (dazu später mehr) auf Vorrat. WLAN gibts hier nicht. – Aber von vorne. Heute früh sind wir noch kurz von George Town  aus an die Nordküste gefahren, haben uns den Leuchtturm angesehen und die Ausblicke genossen.

Well, I’m typing this in our palace (more about that later) to post tomorrow. No WiFi here. – But from the start. This morning we did a quick drive from George Town to the North coast, looked at the lighthouse and enjoyed the views.

Dann haben wir uns Launceston angesehen. Eine recht große Stadt, mit interessanten Fassaden,

Then we took a look at Launceston. A quite large town, with interesting house fronts,

einer alten Post mit schönem Glockenturm (er spielt die Big-Ben-Melodie)

an old post office with a nice bell tower (it plays the Big Ben melody)

und schönen Kirchen.

and pretty churches.

Nach zwei Stunden in der Stadt haben wir uns auf den Weg gemacht und nur hier und da kurz angehalten, damit Kirsche Fotos machen konnte. Von den Holzfiguren in Campbell Town zum Beispiel.

After two hours in the city, we went on our way and only made short stops here and there so that Kirsche could take photos. Of the wooden sculptures in Campbell Town for example.

Und dann waren wir um sechs herum endlich auf der Fähre, zu unserem heutigen Ziel: Bruny Island.

And then around six we were finally on the ferry to today’s destination: Bruny Island.

Hier haben wir eine tolle Unterkunft, der Palast eben. Wirklich wunderschön. Nur zu empfehlen!!!

Here we have great lodgings, the palace I mentioned. Really beautiful. Highly recommended!!!

Nachdem unser Gepäck verstaut war, sind wir noch spazieren gegangen und hatten auch gleich Glück: Hier gibt es nämlich weiße Wallabys!

After we had put our luggage away, we went for a stroll and got lucky right away: Because here you can spot white wallabies!

Heute sind wir um kurz vor sechs aufgestanden … und dann gings zum Flughafen und ab nach Tasmanien. Dieses „Inselchen“ sieht auf der Australienkarte winzig aus, aber wir wussten, es hat die Größe von Bayern, also war klar, in den paar Tagen, die wir hier sind, werden wir nur einen Bruchteil schaffen.

Today we got up a little before six … and then we went off to the airport and flew to Tasmania. This „little island“ looks so small on the Australia map, but we knew, it has the size of Bavaria, so it was obvious, in the few days that we will spend here, we will only manage to see a small part of it.

Geplant war für den ersten Tag: Von Devonport zum Cradle Mountain Nationalpark, dann eine Höhle besichtigen, und zuletzt nach George Town, da hatten wir ein Zimmer reserviert. Alle meinten, Cradle Mountain sei so toll, da müsse man hin! – Das klingt ja schon wieder nach so einem Ort, den alle sehen wollen, und bei dem wir uns daher nicht so sicher waren … Dann kommt dazu, dass wir gehört haben, dass die Australier gerne in den Weihnachtsferien nach Tasmanien kommen. Hm. Naja, viel Zeit war ja dafür nicht geplant, wir dachten, wir fahren Cradle Mountain hoch und genießen den Ausblick, dann fahren wir wieder … Aber so weit kamen wir nicht. Zuviel Andrang, also Anreise nur nach Kauf eines „Pass“, dann darf man im Shuttle Bus hochfahren. … wir sind wieder gefahren, das war nix für uns!

Planned for the first day: From Devonport to Cradle Mountain national park, then explore a cave, and finally go to George Town, there we had booked a room. Everybody told us, Cradle Mountain is so great, you have to go! – That sounds like one of those places that everybody wants to see, and therefore we were not so sure about it … Then we found out on top of that that during the Christmas holidays, Australiens love to come to Tasmania for a vacation. Hm. But, much time was not planned for the national park anyhow, we thought we drive up Cradle Mountain and enjoy the view, then leave again … But we did not even get that far. Too many people, so the trip can only be made after you buy a „pass“, then you are allowed to go up in the shuttle bus. … we left again, that was not the thing for us!

Davor hatten wir schon beschlossen, die Höhlenbesichtigung zu streichen. Denn: Am Flughafen haben wir Flyer mitgenommen, da stand was von den tollen Wandmalereien in Sheffield. (Unser Reiseführer wusste davon nix, so ein dickes Buch … aber Australien ist halt riesig.) Auf jeden Fall haben wir dann gesagt: Höhlen hatten wir schon zwei, wir sehen uns Sheffield an. Das war noch vor Cradle Mountain.

Earlier we had already decided to skip the cave tour. Because: At the airport we took flyers, and they spoke of great murals in Sheffield. (Our travel guide did not know anything of that, such a thick book … but Australia is huge after all.) In any case, we decided: We already had two caves, we take a look at Sheffield. That was even before Cradle Mountain.

Das ist nur ein ganz kleiner Ausschnitt. Dieser Ausflug hat sich eindeutig gelohnt! Und statt Ausblick vom Cradle Mountain haben wir dann eben an anderen Stellen hier und da angehalten.

That is only a small part of what we saw. This excursion was definitely worth it! And instead of the view down from Cradle Mountain, we then stopped at other places here and there.

Die „Batman Bridge“ (hat nix mit dem Superhelden zu tun!) ist übrigens eine der ersten Schrägseilbrücken der Welt. 1968 wurde sie fertig. – Ja, und dann seht Ihr hier noch den Blick von unserem Zimmer aus:

The „Batman Bridge“ (has nothing to do with the super hero!) is, by the way, one of the world’s first cable-stayed truss bridges. 1968 it was finished. – Well, and then here you see the view from our room:

 

Nach einem sehr entspanntem Vormittag ging es zunächst in den botanischen Garten von Melbourne, wo es für Kirsche schöne Möglichkeiten gab, ihre neue Kamera auszuprobieren.

After very relaxed morning we first went to Melbourne’s botanic garden which offered nice opportunities for Kirsche to practice with her new camera.

Und da das Wetter heute so wunderbar sonnig und warm war, sind wir danach in den Luna Park – ein Herzenswunsch einer jungen Dame … aber bis sie dann mit uns allen in die Wasserbahn gestiegen ist, hat es viel Überredungskünste gebraucht.

And since the weather today was so wonderfully sunny and warm, we then went to the Luna Park – a young lady was very keen on that … but then it took all our powers of persuasion until she stepped into that water ride with us.

Dann war Entspannung angesagt, also sind wir an den Strand und haben uns Fish and Chips gegönnt.

Then it was once again time for some relaxation, so we went to the beach for some fish and chips.

Und heute müssen wir mal früher ins Bett! Der Koffer ist schon gepackt, morgen um 6:20 bringt uns das Taxi zum Flughafen, und dann fliegen wir nach Tasmanien!

And today we have to go to bed earlier for once! The suitcase is already packed, tomorrow at 6:20 am the taxi will bring us to the airport, and then we will fly to Tasmania!

In Australien wird Weihnachten am 25. Dezember gefeiert. Und wir sind ein bisschen spät in den Tag gestartet, weil wir den Abend zuvor bis zwei Uhr morgens Bohnanza gespielt haben …

In Australia Christmas is celebrated on December 25. And we started the day a bit late, because the night before we had played Bohnanza until two in the morning …

Aber dann sind wir zum Weihnachtsessen zu Robins Familie gefahren, mitten in Melbourne. Eine schöne Wohnung mit einem tollen Blick!!!

But then we went for the Christmas lunch with Robin’s family, in the middle of Melbourne. A great apartment with a spectacular view!!!

Das Essen war toll, wir haben genug für die nächste Woche gegessen, es hat super geschmeckt. Aber viel wichtiger waren die Menschen. Wir haben so viele liebe Leute kennengelernt und hoffen sehr, dass wir uns wiedersehen werden. Vielen lieben Dank für ein rundum tolles Weihnachten!

The food was yummy, we ate enough for the whole of next week, it was delicious. But much more important were the people. We met such wonderful folks and very much hope that we will see them all again. Thank you very much for an all around wonderful Christmas!

Ach so … und gestern nacht ist es wieder spät geworden … Ihr wisst schon, Bohnanza …

Oh … and last night it got late again … you know, Bohnanza …

So, wir haben unsere Gastgeber sehr beschäftigt gehalten. Denn natürlich war höchste Priorität: Kirsche braucht eine neue Kamera! Gestern waren wir in einem großen Laden, mit einem Verkäufer, der überhaupt keine Lust auf uns hatte und uns obendrein – wir ich hinterher herausgefunden habe – auch noch belogen hat. Trotzdem hatten wir den ersten Satz Ausrüstung gekauft.

Okay, so we kept our hosts very busy. For of course highest priority was: Get a new camera for Kirsche! Yesterday we were in a big shop, with a salesman who definitely was not in a mood to help us and who on top of that – as I found out later – straight out lied to us. Still, we had bought the first batch of equipment there.

Dann war die Frage: eine gebrauchte, wie ich sie hatte (neu gibt es sie nicht mehr), oder das Nachfolgemodell? Also haben wir noch keine Kamera gekauft, um abends über die Unterschiede nachzulesen.

Then the question was: a used one, as I had before (you won’t get a new one anymore), or the new model? So we did not buy a camera yet, wanting to read up on the differences in the evening.

Und schnell war klar, das neuere Modell ist um Längen besser, wir holen uns dieses. Also sind wir heute losgefahren, zu einem anderen Laden, der näher ist, denn einfach nur die Kamera – da waren wir uns sicher – haben sie überall.

And it soon became clear, the newer model is much better, so we have to get that one. So today we drove off, to a different shop that is closer by, for simply the camera body – we were sure of that – they would have in all the shops.

In „Ted’s“ haben wir dann das glatte Gegenteil zum ersten Verkäufer gefunden: Andrew war ein wahrer Engel! (Andrew, falls Du das liest: Danke, Danke, Danke!) Wir haben die Kamera zu einem sehr guten Preis gekriegt, und  Andrew hat auch Sonderwünsche (bezüglich Kamera!!!) erfüllt. Mit viel Spaß und Hilfsbereitschaft, und zwischendrin hat er uns tolle Fotos gezeigt, die er gemacht hat.

In „Ted’s“ we then found the absolute opposite to the first salesman: Andrew was a true angel! (Andrew, in case you read this: Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!) We got the camera for a very good price, and Andrew also fulfilled special requests (regarding the camera!!!). With much joy and helpfulness, and in between he showed us great photos that he had taken.

Und dann fanden wir heraus, dass wir im ersten Laden Sachen gekauft hatten, die zu teuer und/oder nicht hochwertig waren. … Also alles bei Andrew gekauft, zurück zu Laden Nummer eins und den ganzen Kram zurückgegeben …

And then we found out that in the first shop we had bought things that were too expensive and/or not really premium quality. … So we bought it all from Andrew, went back to store number one and returned all that crap …

Und jetzt haben wir eine seeeeeeeeeeeehr glückliche Kirsche!!!

And now we have a veeeeeeeeeeeeery happy Kirsche!!!

Tja, gestern waren wir nochmal auf der Insel, danach sind wir in Etappen nach Melbourne gefahren. Unterwegs ein paar Fotos hier und da, ABER heute gibts keine Bilder. Gestern haben wir den Mietwagen abgegeben, Robin hat uns abgeholt, dann sind wir zu ihr. Und heute haben wir gemerkt, dass meine Kamera weg ist … mit allem Drum und Dran. Nicht zu finden, Europcar hat sie (angeblich?) auch nicht. MIST!

Well, yesterday we went to the island once more, after that we bit by bit drove to Melbourne. On the way a few photos here and there, BUT today you get no pictures. Yesterday we dropped off the rental car, Robin picked us up, we then went to her place. And today we realized that my camera is missing … with all the extras. Not to be found, Europcar (supposedly?) does not have it either. DAMN!

So. Heute sind wir wieder viel gefahren. Aber als erstes wollten wir uns bei Mallacoota das Bunker-Museum (2.Weltkrieg) ansehen, laut Reiseführer jeden Vormittag offen … laut Wirklichkeit aber nur dienstags …

Well. Today we did lots of driving again. But first we wanted to take a look at the WWII bunker museum near Mallacoota that – according to the guide book – is open every morning … but according to reality only on Tuesdays …

Aber da war ein netter Wanderweg gleich um die Ecke, also sind wir da ein Stück weit gegangen. Da gabs interessante Käfer, kleine Orchideen …

But there was a nice hiking trail just around the corner, so we walked a bit. There were interesting beetles, small orchids …

… und ein Waran hat sich ganz brav und ausgiebig fotografieren lassen.

… and a goanna was happy to be part of a long photography session.

Aber das Hauptziel war Raymond Island. Wir waren nicht sicher, ob wir es heute noch schaffen, uns die Insel anzusehen, aber es hat geklappt. Dort leben recht viele Koalas, und wir haben auch sieben Stück gesehen! (und einen Schnabeligel und, und, und … aber wir wollen ja nicht angeben 😉 )

But the main destination was Raymond Island. We had not been sure whether we would manage today to take a look at the island, but it did work out. There quite a few koalas live, and we did see seven! (and an echidna and, and, and … but we don’t want to brag 😉 )

Die Tiere, von denen wir am meisten gesehen haben, haben wir nicht fotografiert … aber Ihr wisst ja alle, wie Mücken aussehen. Deswegen sind wir am Schluss dann regelrecht geflüchtet …

Those animals that we saw most of we did not take a picture of … but you all know what mosquitoes look like. Because of them we rather fled in the end …
