Nach der Ausstellung hatten wir erst mal kräftig Hunger. Das ist übrigens eine Kartoffel … also, das Teil auf dem Holzstab.

After the exhibition we were extremely hungry. This is a potato, by the way … meaning, that thing on the wooden stick.

Danach sind wir ein bisschen durch die Straßen, an etlichen Haien vorbei …

Then we walked around a bit, through the streets, passed some sharks …

Dann kamen wir zum Mount Victoria. Nach einem anstrengenden Anstieg hatten wir einen tollen Ausblick auf Wellington.

Then we reached the Mount Victoria. After an exhausting climb we had a great view of Wellington.

Da oben ist diese Kanone zu sehen. Die wurde 1877 da hochgeschleppt, und dann jeden Mittag abgefeuert, damit die Leute wussten, wann es zwölf war. 23 Jahre lang!

Up there you can see this cannon. It was hauled up there in 1877 and then fired every noon, so that the people knew when it was 12. For 23 years!

Auf dem Rückweg haben wir schöne Schmetterlinge gesehen.

On the way back we saw pretty butterflies.

Und obwohl es sich im Reiseführer nicht so anhört: auch in Wellington gibt es schöne Gebäude.

And even though the entry in the travel guide does not sound like it: there are nice buildings, also in Wellington!

Auf der Süd-Insel hatten wir im Radio eine Verlosung mitgekriegt, für Karten zu einer Lego-Ausstellung in Wellington. Klar, dass wir da hin wollten … aber auf dem Weg haben wir mitgekriegt, dass hier heute ein Feiertag ist. Also waren wir nicht sicher, ob es im Museum nicht zu voll wäre. Wir haben einfach mal nachgesehen … und sind dann bei dieser Ausstellung gelandet:

On the South Island, in the radio, we had caught a draw for tickets to a lego exhibition in Wellington. Now, of course we wanted to go there … but on the way there we found out that today is a public holiday in Wellington. So we were not quite sure whether the museum would not be too crowded. Well, we simply went to check … and then ended up going to this exhibition:

Erster Weltkrieg, die Schlacht von Gallipoli. Sehr interessant gestaltet, mit überlebensgroßen Figuren, die Momente des Krieges veranschaulichen.

WWI, the Gallipoli campaign. The exhibition was done in a very interesting way, with oversized figures, that bring moments of war to live.

Man folgt einigen Soldaten, die mit Namen und ihrer persönlichen Geschichte beschrieben werden.

You follow the stories of some soldiers, you learn their names and their personal histories.

Und es gibt jede Menge Information, über Waffen, über Läuse und Krankheiten, über die Mangel-Ernährung … Verletzte, die zu Beginn der Kampagne verwundet worden waren, wurden auf ein gekapertes deutsches Schiff gebracht, auf die Lützow. Weil nichts besseres da war, wurden Kofferanhänger genutzt – für die Identifizierung der Verwundeten. Man beachte den Ort, der an der Seite genannt wird  …

And there is all kinds of information, about weapons, about lice and diseases, about the deficient nourishment … those who had been injured right at the start of the campaign, were brought onto a captured German liner, the Lützow. And because they had nothing else, they used luggage labels to identify the wounded. Pay attention to the city named on the side of the tag …

Auch die Latrine war ein Thema … zum Beispiel, dass manch ein Soldat so krank und geschwächt war, dass er hineinfiel und ertrank …

The latrine was also discussed … for example that soldiers were sometimes so ill and weak that they fell in and drowned …

Und, wie erwähnt, die Ernährung … auch kein Spaß.

And, as mentioned above, the soldiers‘ diet … also no fun.

Links sieht man, was die Soldaten täglich hätten kriegen sollen, rechts das, was sie gekriegt haben.

On the left you see what the soldiers should have gotten each day, on the right what they did get.

Rum hätten sie auch jeden Tag kriegen sollen, auf den Flaschen stand „SRD“, für „Supply Reserve Depot“. Aber da der Rum meist nicht ankam, sprach man von „Seldom Reaches Destination“ (= erreicht selten Bestimmungsort).

Rum they should have gotten each day as well, on the jars it said „SRD“ for „Supply Reserve Depot“. But since the rum most of the time was not delivered, they called it „Seldom Reaches Destination“.

Eine sehr gut gemachte Ausstellung! 2,5 Stunden waren wir da drin … Bis April 2019 wird sie noch gezeigt. Also: schaut sie Euch an!

A very well done exhibition! 2.5 hours we were inside … And it will be shown until April 2019, so: go and see it!

Heute sind wir ja mit der Fähre zur Nord-Insel. Gleich morgens kam eine SMS: ca. eine Stunde Verspätung. Gut, haben wir uns gedacht, dann schaffen wir es doch noch, zum Museum zu gehen. In Picton kann man nämlich die Edwin Fox besichtigen.

Today we took the ferry to the North Island. And first thing this morning we got a text message: about one hour delay. Good thing, we thought, that way we have the time to go to the museum. Because in Picton you can go and see the Edwin Fox.

Also haben wir unser Gepäck aufgegeben, die Boarding-Pässe besorgt und den – nicht ganz perfekt sauberen – Mietwagen abgegeben.

So we dropped off our luggage, got our boarding passes and also dropped off the – not perfectly clean – rental car.

Dann haben wir uns das Schiff angesehen. Gebaut 1853 in Indien.

Then we went to see the ship. She was built in India in 1853.

Viele Reisen hat die Edwin Fox in ihrem langen Leben gemacht.

Many voyages the Edwin Fox embarked on during her long life.

Sie hat Tee transportiert, Kohle und gefrorene Schafskadaver, Auswanderer, Soldaten und Sträflinge.

She carried tea, coal and frozen sheep carcasses, emigrants, soldiers and convicts.

Im Museum haben wir viel über ihre Geschichte erfahren. Wie sie gebaut wurde, was für Fahrten sie gemacht hat, welche Zeitungsartikel über sie geschrieben wurde. Und wie sie dann nach Picton gebracht wurde.

In the museum we learned a lot about her history. How she was built, what voyages she had made, which newspaper articles were written about her. And how she was finally brought to Picton.

Ein tolles Museum, wir hätten noch mindestens eine Stunde länger dort verbringen können. Definitiv eine Empfehlung! – Aber wir mussten ja auf die Fähre … wenn auch verspätet, gefahren ist sie ja doch.

A great museum, we could easily have spent another hour there. Definitely a recommendation! – But, we had to get onto our ferry … even if delayed, finally it did leave.

Morgen gehts ja in den nördlichen Teil von Neuseeland. Hier im Süden haben wir viele schöne Ecken entdeckt und nette Leute kennengelernt. Tja, und die wollten uns wohl zeigen, dass sie unsere Gesellschaft auch sehr genossen haben, denn zum Abschied gabs:

As mentioned before, tomorrow we will travel to the northern part of New Zealand. Here in the South we discovered many nice spots and met friendly people. Well, and the way it looks, they wanted to show us that they also very much enjoyed our company, with this good-bye:

Heute haben wir die Marlborough Sounds ein bisschen erkundet. Doch kaum hatten wir Picton verlassen, mussten wir schon den ersten Stop machen: So eine Fähre werden wir morgen besteigen, um zur Nord-Insel zu fahren.

Today we explored the Marlborough Sounds a bit. But no sooner had we left Picton than we had to stop again: We will board a ferry like that tomorrow, to travel to the North Island.

Es folgten noch viele weitere Stops, der Blick aufs Meer war oft einfach zu schön.

Many more stopps followed, the view over the ocean was often just too beautiful.

Aber wir haben nicht nur Wasser gesehen … 😉

But we did not only see water … 😉

Die meiste Zeit konnte man das Meer gar nicht sehen, die enge und sehr kurvige Straße war von Bäumen und Büschen gesäumt …

Most of the time you could not even see the ocean, the narrow and often  very windy road was bordered by trees and bushes …

und hier war der Baum dann schon auf der Straße. – Und hab ich erwähnt, dass es manchmal sehr eng wurde???

and here the tree was already on the street. – Oh, and did I mention that at times the road was very narrow???

Aber irgendwann haben wir dann Titirangi Bay erreicht, ein schöner Sandstrand, ein paar Camper, eine Möwe.

But then finally we reached Titirangy Bay, a nice sandy beach, a few campers, one seagull.

Wir haben den Tag genossen! Aber leider haben wir keinen passenden Smiley gefunden …

We enjoyed the day! But unfortunately we could not find a fitting smiley …

In der Nacht hat es heftig geregnet, morgens war alles nass, und wieder war es bedeckt, richtig grau. Aber wir haben den Lavendel beim zugehörigen Hof trotzdem genossen.

During the night it had rained heavily, in the morning all was wet, and once again the sky was overcast, grey really. But we nonetheless enjoyed the lavender at the lavender farm.

Da haben wir auch wieder Zikaden gehört und gesehen, und spannende Spinnen, zwei haben so eine Art Tanz aufgeführt …

There we once again heard and saw cicadas, and fascinating spiders, two of them did a kind of dance …

Nur, wie gesagt, der Boden war nass … und nach ungefähr einer Stunde durch-das-Gras-laufen hatten wir nasse Socken und Schuhe. Tja, warm war es nicht wirklich, aber wir haben nicht so viele Schuhe dabei, also haben wir dann ganz deutsch Socken in Sandalen getragen 😉

But, as mentioned above, the ground was wet … and after about an hour of walking around in wet grass, we had wet socks and shoes. Well, it was not really warm, but we don’t have all that many shoes in our luggage, so we then – very German! – wore socks in our sandals 😉

Ach, und die Schuhe wollten partout nicht trocknen, die mussten dann später in die pralle Sonne! Gesagt, getan …

Oh, and the shoes just did not want to dry out, they – later on that was – needed to be put into the bright sunshine! No sooner said than done …

Bei der Weiterfahrt war um uns herum immer noch alles wolkenverhangen – manchmal sah es so aus, als wäre den Neuseeländern die Landschaft ausgegangen und als hätten sie dann einfach alles weiß überpinselt. Als ob die Welt da einfach aufhört.

When we continued our drive, all around us the clouds still hung very low – sometimes it looked as if the New Zealanders had run out of landscape and then they had simply coloured everything white. As if the world simply ended there.

Wir sind bis zwölf gefahren, dann waren wir hungrig. Und wir haben genau das richtige Café gefunden, mit ganztags-Frühstück! Lecker wars!

We kept going until noon, then we were hungry. And we found just the right café, serving breakfast all day long! And yummy it was!

Und wie wir da so draußen sitzen und essen, kam die Sonne raus, aber so extrem, dass wir schnell die Sonnencreme geholt haben.

And as we are sitting there outside and eating, the sun came out, but full blast, so that we quickly got the sunscreen out.

Beim Weiterfahren haben wir dann noch eine Wolke gefunden, die sich wohl verlaufen hatte. Auf einmal war da eine Nebelwand über der Straße, vielleicht 5m dick, lustig.

Later, down the road, we found one cloud that must have gotten lost. All of a sudden there was this wall of fog across the street, maybe 5m thick, funny.

Wir haben dann am frühen Nachmittag Lake Grassmere erreicht, wo über Verdunstung Salz gewonnen wird. Führungen gibt es leider keine, aber wir haben ein paar Fotos gemacht.

In the early afternoon we reached Lake Grassmere, where they extract salt via evaporation. Unfortunately there are no tours offered, but we did take a few pictures.

Und dann sind wir an den „Becken“ entlang Richtung Küste gefahren.

And then we drove past all the „pools“ towards the coast.

Unterwegs haben wir schöne Schwäne gesehen, wieder Zikaden, und einen Distelfink.

On the way we saw pretty swans, some more cicadas, and a goldfinch.

Und dann waren wir am Strand. In der Mitte ein Steg, ansonsten weit und breit nix und niemand. Wir hatten den ganzen Strand für uns, ganz kleine Kiesel, schön warm, Wahnsinn! Lange sind wir da entlangspaziert, haben schöne Steine und Muscheln gesammelt, das Wetter und die Wellen genossen. Am Ende haben wir uns unsere Bücher geholt und in der Sonne gelesen, auf diesen schönen warmen Steinen … man hätte glatt einschlafen können!

And then we reached the beach. A jetty in the middle, other than that, nothing and nobody as far as the eye could see. We had the whole beach to ourselves. It was covered with small pebbles, nice and warm, awesome! We strolled along the beach for a long time, we collected pretty stones and shells, enjoyed the weather and the waves. And after that, we got our books and read, sitting in the sun on those nice warm pebbles … one could easily just have drifted off to sleep!

Fast zwei Stunden haben wir am Strand verbracht, dann sind wir weiter. Und abends um sechs haben wir dann unseren letzten Standort auf der Südinsel erreicht: Picton. Da sind wir am Hafen herumspaziert und haben von einer Brücke kleine Quallen im Wasser gesehen … und …

We spent almost two hours on the beach, then we pushed on. And then at six in the evening we reached our last base on the South Island: Picton. There we went for a stroll along the harbour, and from a bridge we saw small jellyfish in the water … and …

Toll! Gut, dass wir offiziell Spaß haben durften …

Fantastic! Good thing that we had the permission to have fun …

Zum Abschluss haben wir noch Kormoranen zugesehen, dann gings zurück ins Motel, und jetzt gehts ins Bett! Gute Nacht!

To finish the evening, we watched some cormorants, then we went back to the motel, and now it is time for bed! Good night!

Nach unserem frühen Morgen haben wir uns eine Pause gegönnt, wir waren müüüüde! Aber zwischendrin haben wir fleißig mit Sabrina SMS ausgetauscht und waren daher pünktlich zur Stelle, als es darum ging, „unseren“ Riesensturmvogel wieder freizulassen. Wir stellen vor: unsere Helden Sabrina und Ben.

After our early morning, we allowed ourselves a break, we were sooooo tired! But in between we exchanged text messages with Sabrina, and therefore we were at the right spot at the right time when „our“ giant petrel was to be released again. May we introduce our heroes: Sabrina and Ben.

Der Vogel war dehydriert und erschöpft. Wenn Sabrina ihn nicht kräftig gefüttert hätte, wäre er gestorben. Aber jetzt ist er wieder fit beim Wellenreiten.

The bird had been dehydrated and exhausted. If Sabrina had not fed it really well, it would have died. But now it is fit again, surfing the waves.

Da er recht nah am Strand ins Wasser kam (die Bootsfahrt weiter hinaus wäre für ihn zu stressig), waren die Möwen nicht begeistert. Ein Jungmöwen-Fresser in ihrem Revier!

Since it was released quite close to the beach (the boat ride farther out would have been too stressful for it), the seagulls were not happy. A gull chick eater in their territory!

Aber „unser“ Vogel ist ungerührt weiter hinaus gepaddelt, und jetzt können alle wieder lachen!

But „our“ bird didn’t care and simply paddled further out, and now everybody is happy again!

Tja, und dann … mag ja sein, dass der eine oder andere unter Euch ganz enttäuscht war, dass es letztes Jahr keine Gelegenheit gab, uns ein Weihnachtsgeschenk zu überreichen. Heute sind wir um fünf aufgestanden. Ja, um FÜNF! Denn um sechs war die Albatros-Tour. Wir waren acht Leute plus unsere Kapitänin. Sie hat uns ein gutes Stück rausgefahren, dann haben wir einen großen Köder ausgeworfen (ca. 40cm lang) und gewartet, was so kommt. Viele Riesensturmvögel, und die sind recht rabiat!

Today we got up at five. Yes, at FIVE! Because the albatross tour was scheduled for six. We were eight people plus our captain. She took us quite a ways out to sea, then we threw out a large bait (about 40cm long) and waited who might show up. Many giant petrels, and they are quite fierce!

Und dann kam auch der erste Albatros. Insgesamt haben wir fünf verschiedene Arten gesehen.

And then the first albatross showed up. All in all we saw five different species.

Der Riesensturmvogel hat übrigens nur ein Nasenloch … das kann man hier so ein bisschen sehen. (Ich habe eine Unmenge von Fotos gemacht, weil ich schon erwartet habe, dass: viele nicht gut sind. Ein fahrendes Boot auf einem bewegten Meer, von dem aus man fliegende Vögel in schwachem Morgenlicht fotografiert …)

The giant petrel only has one nostril, by the way … you can see that here a bit. (I took loads of photos because I pretty much expected that: many did not turn out all that well. A boat being driven on a moving ocean, from which you take pictures of flying birds, in weak morning light …)

Wir haben den Vögeln lange zugesehen, es war toll, sie auch beim Landen zu beobachten.

We watched the birds for a long time. It was great to also observe the landings.

Aber nicht nur wir haben beobachtet … das ging auch in die andere Richtung.

But not only we were observing – that also worked the other way around.

Und Abflug – toll wars!

And lift-off – it was great!

Ja, Ihr lest richtig, wir haben sogar schwarze Schwäne gesehen – auf dem Meer!

Yes, it is correct what you read there, we even saw black swans – on the ocean!

Und dann sind wir „heim“. Ziemlich klamme Finger hatten wir nach über zwei Stunden auf dem Boot. Aber wir haben ja ein ganz tolles Motelzimmer …

And then we went „home“. We had quite clammy fingers after over two hours on the boat. But then we do have a great motel room …

Guten Abend! (hier ist es gleich neun) Heute morgen haben wir als erstes eine Albatros-Tour für morgen früh gebucht, dann sind wir los. Denn die Tour wird in Kaikoura sein, das war eine lange Fahrt. Aber natürlich haben wir Fotos gemacht unterwegs. Obwohl es morgens wieder genieselt hat.

Good evening! (here it will be 9pm soon) This morning we first of all booked an albatross tour for tomorrow morning, then we left. Since the tour will be in Kaikoura, we had to get there, a long drive. But of course we took photos along the way. Even though in the morning it drizzled again.

Heute haben wir auch die Maruia Falls gefunden. Die sind nämlich in unserer Karte falsch eingezeichnet!!!

Today we also found the Maruia Falls. For they are marked in the wrong spot on our map!!!

Da hat es noch genieselt, später geschüttet … doch dann wurde es langsam besser.

There is was still drizzling, later it poured … but then it slowly got better.

Und dann wurde es richtig schön. Weg mit den Sweatshirts, her mit dem Sonnenschutz!

And then it got really nice. Away with the sweatshirts, bring on the sunscreen!

Wir sind heute auch an einem Lama-Hof vorbeigekommen.

Today we also passed a llama farm.

Und dann sind wir in Kaikoura angekommen, wieder an der Ostküste.

And then we arrived in Kaikoura, back at the East coast.

Nach dem Essen sind wir noch ein bisschen herumgefahren und haben den Parkplatz bei der „Robben-Kolonie“ entdeckt. Robben waren nur weit draußen, nur eine war in Gehdistanz, da wollten wir hin, da sehen wir diesen riesigen Vogel. (wir dachten, das wäre ein junger Albatross) Der hat sich offensichtlich nicht ganz wohl gefühlt, aber fliegen konnte er wohl auch nicht.

After dinner we drove around for a bit and discovered the parking lot at the „seal colony“. The seals were far out, only one was closer by, and as we wanted to walk there, we saw this huge bird. (we though it was a young albatross) It did not seem to feel quite at ease, but it apparently could also not fly away.

Wir haben dann bei den Albatros-Leuten (von heute morgen) jemanden erwischt, die haben Sabrina angerufen, die sich um verletzte Wildtiere kümmert, und bei der ist der Vogel jetzt. Ein Riesensturmvogel ist das übrigens.

We then just in time caught somebody at the albatross encounter place (from this morning), they called Sabrina who takes care of injured wildlife, and now the bird is with her. It is a giant petrel, by the way.

Gestern sind wir recht früh aufgestanden und wollten eigentlich auch zeitig los … aber dann haben wir die Vorhänge aufgezogen und das Wetter gesehen: es hat geschüttet! Also haben wir uns Zeit gelassen, mal wieder Emails beantwortet etc.. Um kurz vor zehn hat der Regen langsam nachgelassen und wir sind los.

Yesterday we got up quite early, and we had also planned to leave pretty soon after getting up … but then we opened the curtains and saw the weather: it was pouring rain! So we took our time, finally got around to answering some mails etc.. Close to ten then the rain got less and we left.

Wir haben uns dann am Ortsrand noch eine alte Eisenbahnbrücke angesehen, oder die Reste davon.

We then, at the edge of town, took a look at an old railway bridge, or rather at the remains.

Auf der Weiterfahrt wurde das Wetter langsam besser, aber es waren immer noch wilde Wolken unterwegs …

Driving on, the weather slowly got better, but still there were those fierce clouds around …

Wir haben am Straßenrand verschiedene Kuriositäten gesehen.

At the side of the road we saw the odd this and that.

Und dann haben wir bei Sonnenschein Waiuta erreicht, die Geisterstadt. Hier wurde lange nach Gold gegraben, aber als die Hauptmine 1951 einbrach und überflutet wurde, gab es keine Arbeit mehr und die Einwohner sind weggezogen.

And then in bright sunshine we reached Waiuta, the ghost town. Here people had been mining for gold for a long time, but when in 1951 the main mine collapsed and was flooded, there was no work left and the inhabitants moved away.

Leider können wir Euch zu den Bildern nicht viel erzählen, die Informationen waren dürftig …

Unfortunately we cannot tell you much to go with the pictures, the information given was poor …

Hummeln waren da in Scharen unterwegs, die mussten alles – uns eingeschlossen – untersuchen.

Bumblebees were flying around, in droves. And they had to inspect everything – including us.

Danach sind wir nach Reefton gefahren, auch eine Goldgräberstadt. Wir haben uns Pfannen geliehen und sind an den Fluss. Immerhin haben wir ein Goldflöckchen und einen winzigen Granat gefunden. Aber schön wars am Fluss.

After that we drove to Reefton, also a „gold town“. We rented pans and went to the stream. And we actually did find a tiny flake of gold and a minuscule garnet. But it was so nice by the water.

Und dann sind wir nach Murchison, wo wir geschlafen haben. Eine nette kleine Stadt, und die Menschen hier haben Sinn für Humor.

And then we went to Murchison, where we slept last night. A nice little town, and the people here have a sense of humor.
