Heute sind wir ganz früh morgens losgefahren, die Küste ein Stück weit nach Norden.

Today we left real early, drove the coast up North for a bit.

Wir sind zu den „Pfannkuchen-Felsen“, und so sehen die aus der Ferne aus:

An vielen Stellen sieht man, dass das Ganze Stück für Stück zusammenbricht.

At several spots you can see that the whole structure is bit by bit falling apart.

Wir haben zwischendrin den Vögeln zugesehen, Taras haben den Jungen Futter gebracht.

In between we watched the birds, taras brought food for the young.

Als wir gegangen sind, haben wir die lauten Geräusche etwas genauer untersucht und doch tatsächlich eine Zikade erspäht!

As we left we examined the loud noises a bit more closely, and we actually spotted a cicada!

Das war unser Morgen. Danach gings zurück ins Motel, da haben wir schön gefrühstückt  und ein bisschen Pause gemacht. Nachmittags sind wir dann wieder los. Zurück zum Arthur’s Pass, an dem wir gestern schon waren. Die Landschaft war wieder toll, warm war es (28°C), schön.

That was our morning. Then we went back to the motel, there we had a nice breakfast and had a bit of a rest. In the afternoon we left again. We went back to Arthur’s Pass, where we had been yesterday already. The scenery was great again, it was warm (28°C), great.

Aber natürlich hatten wir einen Grund, warum wir zurück sind: und der ist geflügelt.

But of course there was a specific reason why we went back: and that reason has wings.

Wir wollten nämlich unbedingt Keas sehen … und diese Bergpapageien findet man eben nicht überall …

Because we really wanted to see keas … and these mountain parrots you just don’t find just anywhere …

Ja, und dann gings zurück. Wir haben noch an einer schmalen Brücke gehalten.

Yes, and then we drove back. We did stop at a narrow bridge.

Wieder haben wir die Aussicht genossen. All diese malerischen Berge um uns herum!

Again we enjoyed the view. All those picturesque mountains around us!

Ja, und vor dem Schlafengehen noch eine Warnung an alle Autofahrer, die uns vielleicht eine Nachricht zukommen lassen wollen:

Was für ein wunderschöner Tag gestern! Die Sonne hat uns den ganzen Tag begleitet, 27°C (vor ein paar Tagen hatten wir 13°C!). Wir sind von Christchurch nach Greymouth gefahren, über den „Great Alpine Highway“.

What a glorious day yesterday! The sun accompanied us for the whole day, 27°C (a few days ago we had 13°C!). We drove from Christchurch to Greymouth, along the „Great Alpine Highway“.

Schon die Fahrt zu den „Alpen“ hin war schön, hier ein Blick:

Dann ging es über den ersten Pass, und danach kam „Castle Hill“, Felsbrocken in Hülle und Fülle liegen da herum.

Then we drove over the first mountain pass, and after that we reached „Castle Hill“, rocks in abundance lying around there.

Da waren tolle „Figuren“ dabei …

und riesige Brocken. – Seht Ihr den Mann da oben drauf?

and huge lumps. – Can you see the man on top?

Danach sind wir wieder weitergefahren – durch die Berge, an Seen vorbei, durch eine tolle Landschaft … irgendjemand musste da eine Menge Fotos machen!

After that we drove on – through the mountains, past lakes, through a magnificent landscape … somebody had to take a lot of photos there!

Am Arthur’s Pass haben wir dann eine kleine Wanderung gemacht. Alles war total mit Moos bewachsen, sah ein bisschen nach verwunschener Märchenwald aus …

At Arthur’s Pass we then did a little hike. Everything was overgrown with moss, it looked a bit like an enchanted fairytale forest …

Ein kleines Flüsschen gabs auch …

A little stream was there …

und wir haben niedliche, winzige Vögel gesehen. Der Name: Rifleman!

and we saw cute tiny birds. Its name: rifleman!

Und danach sind wir nach Greymouth, wo wir übernachtet haben …

And then we went to Greymouth where we slept …

So, gestern ging der Tag los wie der letzte aufgehört hat, mit Regen, grauem Himmel, Bergen in Wolken.

So, yesterday the day started just like the one before had ended, with rain, grey sky, mountains in the clouds.

Aber immerhin haben wir schöne Vögelchen entdeckt. Nur sehr scheu, leider.

But at least we discovered pretty little birds. Just very shy they were, unfortunately.

Naja, Ziel des Tages war Christchurch, also die Küste hoch. Zuerst wollten wir uns die Halbinsel dort ansehen. Und wie wir näher kamen, wurde auch das Wetter besser. Schicke Hügel gabs auf dem Weg, und natürlich Schafe …

Well, the day’s destination was Christchurch, so up the coast. First we wanted to take a look at the peninsula there. And as we came closer the weather cleared up a bit. Pretty hills we saw on the way, and sheep of course …

Dann kamen wir auf die Halbinsel … ganz waren die Wolken nicht weg:

Und das Gras war feucht …

And the grass was wet …

Doch wie wir dann unten in Akaroa ankamen, war es schön sonnig. Es war sogar so schön, dass wir uns für eine halbe Stunde ans Wasser gesetzt und gelesen  haben. (und irgendjemand mit roten Haaren hat einen leichten Sonnenbrand gekriegt …)

But when we then arrived down in Akaroa, it was nice and sunny. It was even so nice that we sat down by the water for half an hour and read. (and somebody with red hair actually caught a light sunburn …)

Und dann sind wir die Summit Road zurückgefahren, von der aus man tolle Ausblicke auf die Stadt und die Küste hat.

And then we drove back via the Summit Road, from which you have great views of the town and the coast.

Aber um uns herum waren die Berge immer noch von Wolken bedeckt …

But around us the mountains were still covered in clouds …

und später sind wir mitten hindurch gefahren, Sicht: 20m

and later we drove right through, visibility: 20m

Dann sind wir nach Christchurch, das von zwei Erdbeben schwer getroffen wurde. Hier seht Ihr die Kathedrale:

Aber mit Hilfe von T.Rex wird das schon werden …

Naja, für uns wars dann Zeit, in unsere Zelle zu gehen. Zelle? Ja klar, wir haben im Gefängnis übernachtet!

Well, for us it was then time to go to our cell. Cell? Well, of course, we slept in the jail!

 

 

So. Heute hat es tatsächlich nicht den ganzen Tag geregnet. Aber bei dieser niedrigen Wolkendecke kommen Gefühle von Platzangst auf …

So. Today it did not rain all day for a change. But with this low cloud cover, feelings of claustrophobia come knocking …

Aber wir haben wieder schöne Greifvögel gesehen, die sind niedrig genug geflogen …

But we once again saw nice predatory birds, they flew low enough …

Und dann sind wir zu den „Lehmklippen“. Die haben wir gestern links liegen gelassen, weil es geregnet hat. Heute war es zwar grau (sorgt für farblose Fotos ..), aber trocken!

And then we went to the „Clay Cliffs“. Those we had skipped yesterday because it had been raining. And today it was still grey (makes for colourless photos ..), but dry!

Auf der Weiterfahrt haben wir dann eine Lavendel-Farm entdeckt, sehr schön und natürlich sehr duftig!

On the drive after that we then discovered a lavender farm, very pretty and of course very fragrant!

Dann sind wir an einem See entlang gefahren, all die Berge mit den Wolkenmützen tief ins Gesicht gezogen. Aber wenn man mit den Farben ein bisschen spielt, sieht das Ganze grau doch ganz nett aus …

Then we drove along the lake, all the mountains with the cloud caps drawn deep down into their faces. But when you play with the colours a bit, then all that grey does look quite nice …

Denn die Wolken haben sich partout nicht verzogen.

For the clouds just did not want to go away.

Trotzdem haben die Blumen geblüht, trotzdem sind die Hummeln geflogen, und dann haben wir sogar einen Igel gesehen 😉

But still, the flowers bloomed, still the bumble bees flew, and then we even saw a hedgehog 😉

Heute gibt es nicht viel zu berichten … Das Motto des Tages:

Wir wollten vormittags noch ein wenig Oamaru erkunden, denn da gibt es wunderschöne Häuser und eine hübsche Kirche. Und dann wollten wir schnell die 1,5h nach Twizel fahren, um von dort aus dann den Mount Cook zu erkunden. Aber, seit nachts regnet es und es regnet und es regnet, und zwischendrin regnet es. Das sorgt für tolle Laune und wenig Fotos. (Torben hat mich beauftragt, das zu erwähnen, statt der 1159 Fotos von gestern haben wir heute ganze 50 …)

In the morning we wanted to explore Oamaru a bit more, because in the town you can see beautiful houses and a pretty church. And then we wanted to quickly drive the 1.5hrs to Twizel, so that there we could explore Mount Cook. But, since sometime last night, it has been raining, raining and raining. Oh, and in between, it rains! That makes for a bad mood and few photos. (Torben told me to mention that: instead of the 1.159 photos from yesterday, today we have a whole of 50 …)

Heute haben wir Dunedin wieder verlassen. Auf dem Weg aus der Stadt haben wir uns nur noch schnell die St. Joseph’s Kathedrale angesehen

Today we left Dunedin. On the way out of the city, we only took quick stops to look at the St. Joseph’s cathedral

und eine Jungenschule.

and a boys‘ school.

Dann ging es in Richtung Norden, die Ostküste entlang. Der erste große Halt war in Shag Point, um Pelzrobben zu sehen. Und die gibt es da in Hülle und Fülle, es war toll!

Then we went up North, along the East coast. The first major stop was in Shag Point, to see fur seals. And there are lots there, it was fantastic!

Dann wollten wir eigentlich ohne weitere Stopps zu unserem Motel fahren, aber ein Schild hat uns neugierig gemacht: Moeraki Boulders. Also sind wir dahin und runter an den Strand. Die schönen runden Brocken, die da auf dem Sand liegen, sind beeindruckend. Und die zerbrochenen nicht minder!

Then we really wanted to drive straight to our motel without any further stops, but a sign triggered our curiosity: Moeraki Boulders. So we went there and walked onto the beach. The pretty round boulders that lie around there on the sand are impressive. And the broken ones just as much!

Nur schade, dass die Sonne den ganzen Tag nicht ein Mal rauskam!

Only sad that the sun did not break through the clouds once all day!

Tja, und heute abend waren wir bei den Zwergpinguinen. Das sind die kleinsten, die sich da abendlich die Klippen hochkämpfen … wir durften nur leider keine Fotos machen. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwergpinguin) Aber wir haben sie toll gesehen, der erste kam bis auf drei Meter an uns heran!

Well, and tonight we went to see the blue penguins. Those are the smallest of all, which fight their way up the rocks in the evenings … unfortunately we were not allowed to take any pictures. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_penguin) But we saw them beautifully, the first one came real close, not farther than three meters!

Tja, heute war wieder ein aufregender Tag! Die Schafschur stand an – äh, der Frisörtermin …

Well, today was another exciting day! The sheep shearing was schedulded – ahem, the haircut …

Mäh! Wir haben uns außerdem heute Dunedin ein wenig angesehen. Es gibt tolle Häuser, dazwischen aber auch viel, das nicht so schön aussieht … warum Dunedin die schönste Stadt Neuseelands sein soll, hat sich uns nicht erschlossen. Hier ein paar Häuser, die uns gefallen haben:

Baa! We also took a bit of a look at Dunedin. There are great houses, but in between lots that is not so nice to look at as well … why Dunedin is supposed to be the most beautiful city in New Zealand did not become clear to us. Here a few houses that we liked:

Was wir aber sehr interessant fanden: die vielen bemalten Fassaden.

What we did find very interesting: the many painted house fronts.

Ja, und am Nachmittag gings dann auf die Otago Halbinsel. Unterwegs mussten wir schon wieder oft anhalten, die Ausblicke waren zu schön.

Yes, and in the afternoon we then drove onto the Otago peninsula. On the way we had to take a few stops, the views were just too pretty.

Aber dann kamen wir endlich an unserem Ziel an: Penguin Place. Hier hat uns Kaitlyn herumgeführt. Erst gab es eine Einführung über den Gelbaugenpinguin, dann sind wir mit dem Bus an den Strand. Und sie hat uns gleich gewarnt, dass wir wohl keine Pinguine sehen würden, weil ein Seelöwe mitten am Strand lag. Und wie sie uns etwas über Seelöwen erzählt, geht der Jubel los: ein Pinguin! Hier ein Foto, nicht vergrößert, so sah das für uns aus: in der Mitte der winzige Pinguin, rechts der Seelöwe.

But then we finally reached our destination: Penguin Place. Here Kaitlyn gave us a tour. First we got an introduction about the yellow-eyed penguin, then she drove us to the beach in a bus. And she warned us right away that we most probably would not see any penguins, because a sea lion was lying there right on the beach.  And as she proceeds to tell us about sea lions, the big hurrah starts: a penguin! Here a picture, not enlarged, that is what it looked like for us: in the middle the tiny penguin, on the right the sea lion.

Durch „überdachte“ Gräben sind wir dann näher an den Strand.

Through covered trenches we then went closer to the beach.

Und hier sieht man schon besser, wie mutig der Pinguin weiterwatschelt:

Er ist dann im Gras verschwunden, und wir mussten lange warten, aber dann kamen sogar zwei Pinguine den Weg entlang!

He then disappeared in the grass, and we had to wait for quite a while, but then it was even two penguins who came up the path!

So, dann noch ein bisschen vergrößert die Protagonisten des Abends: Robben lagen herum (die scheinen den Pinguinen nichts zu tun),

Okay, then once again a bit enlarged the protagonists of the evening: fur seals were lying around (they don’t seem to bother penguins),

und dann natürlich der Seelöwe (später haben wir auch noch ein Weibchen entdeckt, an dem ist auch ein Pinguin vorbei), der aber total schlapp war, wenn er nicht hier und da mal das Maul aufgerissen hätte, hätte man meinen können, der lebt gar nicht,

and then of course the sea lion (later we also discovered a female, another penguin walked past that one), but it was so sluggish – if it had not opened its mouth here and there, you would have thought it was dead,

und zuletzt die Stars des Abends: die Pinguine!

and finally the stars of the evening: the penguins!

Und dann gings wieder zurück … die Sonne ging unter.

And then we drove back … the sun set.

Unterwegs haben wir noch einen schönen Morris gesehen …

Und jetzt sind wir wieder im Hotel, gute Nacht!

And now we are back in the hotel, good night!

Heute war eigentlich nur geplant, von Te Anau nach Dunedin zu fahren. Und einfach mal zu sehen, wo und ob wir unterwegs anhalten. Aber da wir gestern beim Bird Sanctuary ja die Fütterung verpasst hatten, wollte ich heute nochmal hin. (und Torben wollte in dieser Zeit zum Friseur … so allmählich müssen wir aufpassen, dass ihn nicht einer der Schafscherer schnappt!) Auf dem Weg dorthin hat sich sehr deutlich gezeigt, dass wir wirklich Glück hatten, dass wir gestern fliegen konnten!

Today the only thing really planned was driving from Te Anau to Dunedin. And to just see where and if we would stop along the way. But since yesterday at the bird sanctuary we had missed the feeding, I wanted to go there once more. (and Torben meanwhile wanted to get his hair cut … bit by bit we have to be careful that one of the sheep shearers does not get him!) On the way there it became very clear that we really were lucky to be able to take that flight yesterday!

Wir waren dann übrigens beide bei der Vogelfütterung – der Friseur hatte zu. Und wir haben sogar – im Gehege! – zusehen dürfen, wie die Takahe-Mutter den Nachwuchs gefüttert hat.

Oh, and by the way, we both went to the bird feeding – the hairdresser’s shop was closed. And we even got to watch – inside the enclosure! – how the takahe mother fed her young.

Aber es gab noch jede Menge andere Vögel zu sehen, heute wurde sogar ausnahmsweise die kleine Eule als Teil der geführten Tour gefüttert. Diese Eulen heißen übrigens „Morepork“. Und hier seht Ihr die nette Dame, die uns alles gezeigt hat.

But there were lots of other birds as well, today they even made an exception and fed the little owl as a part of the guided tour. By the way, these owls are called „morepork“. And here you can see the nice lady who showed us everything.

Ja, und dann haben wir uns wirklich auf den Weg gemacht. Unterwegs mussten wir natürlich hier und da halten. Die Landschaft ist einfach zu schön.

Yes, and then we really got on our way. Here and there we had to stop, of course. The landscape is just too beautiful.

Ein kurzes Stück sind wir auch an der Ostküste entlanggefahren. Mit vielen Unterbrechungen … man kann sich nicht sattsehen!

A short stretch we drove along the East coast. With many interruptions … you just cannot see enough of it!

Und wir haben etwas neuseeländischen Humor mitgekriegt. Vor einem kleinen Ort kam erst ein Schild „langsamer fahren“, dann ein weiteres mit: Kein Doktor – kein Krankenhaus – ein Friedhof. … Damit ist wohl alles gesagt. Aber wir haben nicht nur Schilder gesehen, sondern natürlich auch ein paar Tierchen:

And we caught a dose of New Zealand humour. Coming up to a small town, there first came the sign „slow down“, then the next one with: No doctor – no hospital – one cemetery. … Well, I guess that says it all. But of course we did not only see signs, but also a few animals:

Ja, und jetzt sind wir in unserem Hotel in Dunedin und planen die nächsten Tage. Es gilt, sich zu entscheiden: Westküste? Ostküste? Oder …

Yes, and now we are in our hotel in Dunedin and are planning for the next few days. We have to decide: West coast? East coast? Or …

Heute morgen sind wir um neun an den See, denn wir hatten einen Flug über den Doubtful Sound gebucht. Und die letzten zwei Tage waren keine Flüge möglich gewesen (zu viel Wind), daher hat Ivan, unser Pilot, uns gebeten, um neun zu kommen, damit wir besprechen können, ob und wann wir fliegen können.

This morning at nine we went to the lake, because we had booked a flight over Doubtful Sound. And the last two days no flights had been possible (too much wind), that is why Ivan, our pilot, asked us to come at nine, so we could decide whether and when we can fly.

Und wir hatten Glück! Heute gings. Zuerst ist Ivan mit einer anderen Gruppe auf eine „Mystery Tour“ gestartet, dann sollten wir und ein anderes Pärchen samt Baby um elf unseren Flug antreten. Also hatten wir Zeit und sind zur Vogel-Aufzuchtstation gegangen. Da haben wir auch Takahes gesehen.

And we were lucky! Today was fine. First Ivan went on a „Mystery Tour“ with a different group, then we and another couple with their baby should start our flight at eleven. So we had time and walked to the bird sanctuary. And there we saw the takahes.

Außerhalb der Käfige liefen schöne Enten herum.

Outside of the cages, pretty ducks were walking around.

Und auf dem Rückweg haben wir dann noch einen sehr interessanten Vogel, den Tui, gesehen und vor allem gehört. Wenn Ihr bei youtube „Tui song“ eingebt, könnt Ihr Euch das ja mal anhören.

And on the walk back we then saw another very interesting bird, the Tui, and – more importantly – we heard it. When you enter „Tui song“ at youtube, you can have a listen.

Am See gibt es übrigens auch eine Menge Kanada-Gänse.

At the lake there are a lot of Canada geese as well, by the way.

Das sorgt dafür, dass man die Füße sehr vorsichtig setzen muss …

That is why you have to pay close attention to where you place your feet …
