Und wir dachten, wir wären früh dran! Um halb acht Uhr sind wir morgens losgefahren, bei nur 26°. Aber dann hat die Fahrt zum Nationalpark eben nicht zwei Stunden gedauert, wie uns gesagt wurde, sondern drei … weil wir eben wieder so oft anhalten mussten. Da gab es Känguruhs, und so viele Vögel … Emus zum Beispiel. Oder hier: Ibisse.
And we thought we were early! At seven thirty in the morning we left, at only 26°. But then the drive to the national park did not take the two hours we had been told, but rather three … because once again we had to stop so often. There were kangaroos, and so many birds … emus for example. Or here: ibisses.

Ever heard of a masked lapwing? That is a funny looking bird!
Aber dann waren wir endlich da und sind in der zunehmenden Hitze losgelaufen. Carnarvon Gorge ist eine riesige Schlucht, links und rechts sieht man (in großem Abstand) die Felswände.
But then we were there, finally, and started our hike in the increasing heat. Carnarvon Gorge is a huge gorge, to the left and the right you see (in the distance) the rock walls.
Der Weg führt durch dichte Vegetation, viel hohes Gras, Farne, Palmen. Viele Steinbrocken liegen herum.
The path leads through thick vegetation, much high gras, ferns, palm trees. Lots of rocks lie around.
Und dann gehts immer wieder über kleine Wasserläufe.
And every once in a while you cross small brooks.
Und einmal geht Torben da über die Steine, die den Weg durchs Wasser fortsetzen und ruft mich. Ich schaue rüber – unwirklich, so nah!
And once Torben walks over those stepping stones that lead through the water and calls out to me. I look across – unreal, so close!
Das war auf dem Rückweg. Da haben wir dann noch ganz viele Känguruhs gesehen, und wunderschöne Swamp Wallabys. Die waren alle sehr wachsam, aber meist auch nicht zu nervös, wenn wir vorbeigegangen sind. Nur einmal muss ich ein Känguruh – das ich gar nicht gesehen habe, war in den Büschen – sehr erschreckt haben. Das ist mit einem riesigen Krach davongesprungen. Aber hier ist das schöne Wallaby:
That was on our way back. We then saw many more kangaroos and beautiful swamp wallabies. They all were quite alert but mostly not too nervous when we walked by. Just once I must have scared a kangaroo – that I had not even seen, it was in the bushes – big time. With a huge noise it jumped away. But here is the pretty wallaby:

Aber, wie gesagt, das war schon am Schluss. Auf der Wanderung haben wir noch so viel mehr gesehen. Nicht nur Tiere sondern auch Malereien von Aborigines.
But, as I said, that was towards the end. On the hike itself we saw so much more. Not just animals, but also Aboriginal art.
Und wer gemeint hat, so allmählich gehen uns die Tiere zum Entdecken aus … weit gefehlt. Wir haben viele spannende Insekten gesehen, so wie dieses hier zum Beispiel:
And who might have thought that we would start to run out of animals to discover … think again. We saw many fascinating insects, like this one for example:
Und auch tolle Spinnen. Ganz winzig kleine, die kaum zu fotografieren waren, aber auch größere, eine im Netz über dem Weg (ungefähr 8cm lang), eine im Wasser auf einem Stock (ca. 7cm).
And also great spiders. Teeny tiny ones that you could hardly photograph, but also larger ones, one in a net above the path (about 8cm long), one in the water on a stick (maybe 7cm).
Wir haben auch etliche tote Insekten gesehen, oder – wie hier – die tote Hülle … da hat eine Zikade ihre Larvenhaut zurückgelassen.
We also saw several dead insects, or – as in this photo – the dead husk … here a cicada has shed her old larva shell.
Und dann hat Torben die Entdeckung des Tages gemacht: Eine Schlange im Wasser!
And then Torben made the discovery of the day: A snake in the water!
Ihr seht, an diesem einen Tag haben wir wieder eine Menge erlebt. Auch vom Wetter her. Erst war es brutal sonnig und furchtbar heiß, dann kam das „schlechte Wetter“ (war zumindest zuerst ganz angenehm). Ungefähr eine Stunde lang sind wir durch mal weniger, mal mehr Regen gelaufen, und die ganze Zeit hat es gedonnert. Aber Blitze hatten wir dann erst auf der Rückfahrt. Dafür wirklich die ganzen 2,5 Stunden lang! Doch auch auf der Rückfahrt mussten wir wieder hier und da anhalten. Für den Baum voller Nymphensittiche zum Beispiel.
You see, on this one day we once again experienced lots. Also when it comes to the weather. First it was brutally sunny and terribly hot, then the „bad weather“ started (at least at first it felt quite good). For about an hour we walked through sometimes more sometimes less rain, and there was thunder the whole time. But the lightning we did not get until the return drive. But then for the whole 2.5 hours! But also on the way back we had to stop here and there. For the tree full of cockatiels for example.
Oh, und wunderschöne Gelbhaubenkakadus.
Oh, and beautiful sulphur-crested cockatoos.
Oh, und von wegen Wetter und so … der Sonnenuntergang war spektakulär!!!
