The Big Journey

Eigentlich wollten wir heute ja nichts mehr schreiben … ABER: Wir sind heute wieder ein bisschen an der Küste durchs Wasser gewandert und haben gesehen … na????

We had not planned to write anything more today … BUT: we once again went for a bit of a stroll through the coastal waters and saw … well????

Eine Seeschlange!!! Genauer gesagt: Nattern-Plattschwanz oder Gelblippen-Seeschlange. Toll, oder???

A sea snake!!! To be precise: a yellow-lipped sea krait. Great, isn’t it?

Heute ist „Tag der Entspannung“. Wir lassen andere arbeiten … die kleine Spinne an unserer Tür zum Beispiel, die es schwer hatte, die große Fliege zu transportieren …

Today is „day of relaxation“. We let others do the work … the little spider on our door for example, who had a hard time moving that big fly …

Von unserer Veranda haben wir einen schönen Käfer gesehen.

From our porch we saw a pretty beetle.

Und beim Spaziergang über die Anlage habe ich diese beiden entdeckt:

Ansonsten können wir nur berichten: wir sind faul und entspannt, die Sonne scheint, der Wind weht, alles ist perfekt! 😉

Other than that we can only report: we are lazy and relaxed, the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, all is perfect! 😉

 

So. Heute morgen haben wir Port Vila und die Bar, die Ort meiner schmachvollen Skip-Bo-Niederlagen war, verlassen und sind gleich wieder zum Flughafen zurück.

So. This morning we left Port Vila and the bar that was the site of my shameful skip-bo defeats, and went right back to the airport.

Und da fühlte man sich so ein bisschen in der Zeit zurückversetzt.

And there you felt a bit pushed back in time.

Kein Security-Check, nachdem wir unsere Koffer abgegeben und unsere Boarding-Pässe erhalten hatten, hier:

Und das ist es, wo wir die nächste Zeit wohnen werden: Der Bungalow in der Mitte ist der unsere.

And that is where we will live for the near future: the bungalow in the middle is ours.

Man hört das Meer rauschen und die Vögel zwitschern, das wars!

You hear the gentle sound of the waves and the birds singing, that’s it!

Was wir bist jetzt so entdeckt haben: Krabben, Einsiedlerkrabben, jede Menge kleine Fische und superschöne Geckos.

What we could discover so far: crabs, hermit crabs, lots of small fish and beautiful geckos.

Gestern war mal wieder ein Reisetag … Flug von Auckland nach Port Vila / Vanuatu. Hier der erste Blick auf unser nächstes Reiseziel aus dem Flugzeug:

Yesterday was a pure traveling day once again … we flew from Auckland to Port Vila / Vanuatu. Here the first look at our next destination, from the airplane:

Dann gings mit dem Taxi zum Hotel. Und da es hier erstickend warm und schwül ist, musste zumindest eine von uns sofort in den Pool!

Then we took a taxi to the hotel. And since it is oppressively hot and humid here, one (female) of us had to jump into the pool right away!

Nach der Abkühlung habe ich mich zu Torben auf unseren Balkon gesetzt und im Skip-Bo gegen ihn verloren. Und verloren, und verloren. Was ist nur los? – Aber der Sonnenuntergang war dann eine schöne Ablenkung.

After this nice cool down, I sat down on our balcony, with Torben, and lost against him in skip-bo. And lost, and lost. What is the matter? – But the sunset was a nice distraction.

Danach wurde es sehr schnell dunkel, also mussten wir für die Revanche-Spiele runter zur Bar. Und gut, dass wir das gemacht haben, so konnten wir die Insel-Tänze genießen, die diese Herren vorgeführt haben.

Afterwards it got dark very quickly, so for the revenge games, we had to go down to the bar. And good thing that we did that, thus we could enjoy the island dances that these gentlemen performed.

Später durften die Zuschauer auch mitmachen, aber Torben hat sich natürlich gedrückt. Von wegen „irgendjemand muss ja Fotos machen!“. Pah! 😉

Later on the spectators were invited to join in, but Torben of course managed to avoid that. Something along the lines of “somebody has to take the pictures!”. Pff! 😉

Heute ist unser letzter Tag in Neuseeland. Und da wir später alle Taschen flugtauglich umpacken müssen, haben wir uns für heute nicht so viel vorgenommen. Nur das Aquarium von Auckland: Kelly Tarlton’s.

Today is our last day in New Zealand. And since later on we will have to get all our bags ready for flying, we decided to not plan too much for today. Just the aquarium of Auckland: Kelly Tarlton’s.

Über vier Stunden waren wir dort, viiiiiiiiiiiiel zu sehen. Und damit wir Euch auch davon erzählen können, sitzen wir jetzt beim Italiener an der Küste und  nutzen das WLAN. Wer nach Auckland kommt: „Ristorante Italiano Andrea“ ist unsere Empfehlung des Tages. Pizza wie sie sein soll, der perfekte Teig, nicht zuviel Käse, die Diavolo macht ihrem Namen Ehre … GUT! Und der Service ist erstklassig.

We spent more than four hours there, sooooooooo much to see. And so that we can tell you a bit about it, we are now sitting in front of an Italian restaurant at the waterfront and use their WiFi. For those who might come to Auckland: „Ristorante Italiano Andrea“ is today’s recommendation. Pizza as it should be, the perfect dough, not too much cheese, the Diavolo is the real thing … GREAT! And the service is first-rate.

Jetzt aber zum Aquarium. Zuerst haben wir uns bei den „Rock Pools“ eine Menge zeigen lassen. Wer sich erinnert: In Australien haben wir doch eine Schildkröte beobachten können. Das war eine Green Turtle. Und jetzt haben wir uns den Panzer eines solchen Tieres ansehen können. Ganz schön schwer!

But now about the aquarium. First we got shown a lot of stuff at the „Rock Pools“. In case you remember: In Australia we got to watch that one turtle. That was a „green turtle“. And now we got to take a close look at the shell of one of these animals. Quite heavy!

Der nächste Halt waren die Pinguine. Da kriegen gerade viele ein frisches Federkleid …

The next stop was the penguins. Many of them are molting …

Wir waren püntklich zur Fütterung da.

We were right in time for the feeding.

Nein, die Pinguine haben natürlich Fisch gekriegt. (aber es gab auch eine Ausstellung zu Antarktis/Scott, da kommt der Senf her)

No, the penguins got fish, of course. (but there was also an exhibition Antarctica/Scott, that had the mustard on show)

Es gab aber nicht nur Hand-Fütterung. Die Vögel mussten sich den Fisch auch selber zusammensammeln.

But there was not only hand-feeding. The birds also had to gather fish themselves.

Und es gab Fisch, serviert in der Kugel, um es etwas interessanter zu machen.

And there was fish served in a ball, to make it a bit more interesting.

Dann war die offizielle Fütterung zu Ende, doch wir konnten uns natürlich wieder mal nicht losreißen. Das war unser Glück! Denn so haben wir die nächste Fütterung, die nicht angekündigt war, auch noch mitgekriegt. Da gabs nämlich Fisch im Wasser.

Then the official feeding was over, but of course we could not tear ourselves away, once again. And good thing too! Because that way we also caught the next feeding that had not been announced. And then they served the fish in the water.

Doch natürlich gab es außer Pinguinen noch mehr zu sehen.

But of course there was more to see than just penguins.

Auch etliche Schildkröten, aktuell fünf, um genau zu sein. Das sind nämlich keine Dauergäste. Verletzte Tiere werden hier abgegeben und wenn sie wieder fit genug sind, werden sie wieder freigelassen.

Also several turtles, currently five to be exact. Because these are no permanent residents. Injured animals get dropped off here, and once they are fit enough again, they are released into the wild.

Dann ging es durch den Unterwasser-Tunnel. Da gab es Haie zu sehen, Rochen, Muränen … jede Menge Fische!

Then we walked through the underwater tunnel. There you could spot sharks, rays, moray eels … lots of fish!

Hier war auch die fünfte Schildkröte. Die hat nur drei Flossen. Was mit der vierten passiert ist, ist nicht klar. Ob das von Geburt an so war, oder ob es sich um eine alte Verletzung handelt, weiß man nicht.

Here you could also see the fifth turtle. It has only three fins. What happened with the fourth one, they are not sure. Whether that was a birth defect or whether it is from an old injury, nobody knows.

Und dann haben wir auch hier eine Fütterung mitgekriegt. Dazu kam sogar eine der Muränen aus ihrem Versteck.

And then we got to see a feeding here as well. For that, even one of the moray eels came out of hiding.

Ja, und zum Abschluss gab es noch eine Herausforderung. Wir haben beide bestanden!!! Aber es war schmerzhaft …

Yes, and then there was the final challenge. We both passed the text, of course!!! But it was painful …

 

Heute nur ganz kurz, weil wir a) hauptsächlich Auto gefahren sind b) es fast durchgehend geregnet hat c) wir hundemüde sind und d) das WLAN hier nicht sehr verlässlich ist. Auf der Fahrt von Rotorua nach Auckland haben wir in Tirau Halt gemacht. Da haben wir die Schafe begrüßt …

Today just a quick entry because we a) mainly drove today b) it rained most of the time c) we are dead tired and d) WiFi here is not very reliable. On the way from Rotorua to Auckland we stopped in Tirau. There we greeted the sheep …

… und in Gesellschaft gegessen.

… and had company while eating.

Später haben wir zwei Stunden in Raglan verbracht. Dort schwimmen manchmal Orcas in den Hafen – aber heute leider nicht ;-(

Later we spent two hours in Raglan. Sometimes orcas swim into the harbour there – but not today unfortunately ;-(

Dafür haben wir aber schöne Krabben gesehen!

But instead we saw pretty crabs!

Tja, ratet mal, wer letzte Nacht sehr wenig Schlaf gekriegt hat??? Wir! Wir waren nämlich mit dem Mond beschäftigt. Nur leider war der schöne zweite Vollmond des Monats schon abends um zehn nicht immer zu sehen … die Wolkendecke wurde immer dichter.

Well, guess who did not get a whole lot of sleep last night??? Us! Because we were busy with the moon. But unfortunately that nice second full moon in a month was, at ten at night already, not always visible … the cloud cover closing in more and more.

Ja, und dann ging die Mondfinsternis los! Und die ersten paar Male, als ich draußen war, habe ich den Erdschatten sich über den Mond schieben sehen. Hier um kurz nach eins:

Yes, and then the lunar eclipse started! And the first few times when I went outside, I could see the Earth’s shadow move across the moon. Here just past one in the morning:

Und dann lange nichts. Kein Mond, nicht mal teilweise … In meiner Verzweiflung habe ich beleuchtete Bäume fotografiert. (1:32 Uhr)

And then nothing, for a long time. No moon, not even partly … In my desparation I took pics of lit trees. (1:32 a.m.)

Und dann kam der große Moment: Der Blutmond!!! Pünktlich um 2:30 Uhr standen wir wieder draußen, und alles war schwarz! Doch dann, für vielleicht drei Minuten, war der rote Mond gut zu sehen. FANTASTISCH!!! (2:33 Uhr)

And then the big moment arrived: The blood moon!!! Right on the dot at 2:30 a.m. we were standing outside again, and all was black! But then, for maybe three minutes, the red moon was good to see. FANTASTIC!!! (2:33 a.m.)

Insgesamt sind wir da eine halbe Stunde draußen gesessen und haben die meiste Zeit einen schwarzen Himmel angestarrt. Aber hier und da gab es mal eine kleine Lücke in den Wolken. (2:51 Uhr)

All in all we sat outside for half an hour that time, and most of the time had us staring at a black sky. But every once in a while there was a gap in the clouds. (2:51 a.m.)

Um drei sind wir dann endgültig ins Bett. Müde aber glücklich!!!

At three in the morning we finally went to bed for good. Tired but happy!!!

Und wieder ein aufregender Tag! Doch zuerst haben wir heute morgen einen alten Herrn besucht, der mir einfach nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gegangen ist … und ist er nicht ein Schmuckstück?

And another exciting day! But this morning we first visited an elderly gentleman whom I could not get out of my head anymore … and isn’t he a jewel?

Danach sind wir in das nächste geothermale Gebiet … mittlerweile haben sie schon die Straße für uns umbenannt:

After that we went to the next geothermal area … by now they have even changed the name of the highway for us:

Unser Ziel heute: Wai-O-Tapu. Dort gibt es auch einen Geisir, der wird aber jeden Morgen um 10:15 Uhr mit ein bisschen Seife „aufgeweckt“, also sind wir früh genug los und waren um 9:45 Uhr schon da. Gut, dass wir in weiser Voraussicht unsere Bücher mitgebracht hatten!

Today’s destination: Wai-O-Tapu. There they also have a geyser, but that one gets „woken up“ at 10:15am every morning, with a bit of soap, so we left early enough and were on site at 9:45am already. Good thing that in our wisdom we had brought our books along!

Hier schläft „Lady Knox“ noch (so heißt dieser Geisir) …

… dann wacht sie so langsam auf …

… then she slowly wakes up …

… streckt sich …

… stretches …

… und ist hellwach!

… and is wide awake!

Schön. Uns beide hat sie eine Stunde lang in ihrem Bann gehalten. Immer wieder sah es so aus, als ob das Wasser versiegen würde, es kam nur noch Dampf, doch dann plötzlich schoss das Wasser wieder nach oben.

Pretty. She kept the two of us in thrall for an hour. Again and again it looked as if the water jet was dying down, there was only steam, but then suddenly, the water shot up again.

Das war Teil 1 von Wai-O-Tapu. Wir sind morgens zum Visitor Center gefahren, da kriegt man seine Eintrittskarten, dann muss man zum Geisir aber wieder ein Stück zurückfahren, weil er außerhalb des „Parks“ liegt. Und dann haben wir gehört, dass noch ein Stück weiter weg auch noch ein großes Schlammbecken ist, also sind wir als nächstes da hin.

That was part 1 of Wai-O-Tapu. In the morning we drove to the visitor center, there you get your tickets. But then you have to drive back a part of the way, for the geyser, because that is located outside of the „park“. And then we heard that another bit further away, there is a big mud pool, so that was our next stop.

Hier waren wir nur eine Viertelstunde … es gibt hier ja noch so viel anderes zu sehen. Aber dem Schlamm-Blubbern könnte ich ohne Probleme eine Stunde zusehen … seufz! – Oder eher Schlamm-Explodieren!

Here we only stayed for a quarter of an hour … after all there is so much else to see here. But I could watch the mud bubbling for a whole hour easily … sigh! – Or rather the mud exploding!

Von all den geothermalen Parks, die wir jetzt gesehen haben, ist Wai-O-Tapu mit Abstand der größte. Es gibt viele tolle Krater zu sehen, riesige flache Teiche und vor allem die allertollsten Farben! – Fangen wir mit einem Krater an: Angeblich wohnt hier der Teufel: „Devil’s Home“ …

Of all the geothermal parks that we have seen by now, this one is by far the largest. There are many great craters to see, huge low pools and most of all: spectacular colours! – Let us start with a crater: Supposedly satan lives here: „Devil’s Home“ …

Ein erster Eindruck von den schönen Farben: überall waren Farbtupfer über das Gelände verteilt.

A first impression of the beautiful colours: everywhere there were those coloured specks.

Natürlich viel gelb …

… hier von ganz, ganz nah …

… aber es gab auch eine dunkle Seite 😉

Ja, und dann der erste richtige Farb-Schock.

Da sind übrigens Unmengen von Libellen herumgeflogen!

Oh, and by the way, a myriad of dragonflies flew around there!

Und besonders toll war, dass der Weg direkt über diese großen Teiche führte, ohne Geländer, man war ganz nah dran!

What was especially nice: the path lead directly across those great pools, with no banister, you felt so close to the action!

Hier und da verteilt gab es Werke eines Kettensägen-Künstlers (!!!) zu sehen: Merv Richdale.

Doch zurück zu den Farben. Dunkles grün haben wir im Angebot …

But back to the colours. We have dark green on offer …

… herrliches orange (und ich habe hier NICHTS verfremdet!) …

… und dann der letzte kleine See, als wir schon dachten, jetzt kann uns nichts mehr überraschen: neon!

… and then the last little lake, when we thought, now nothing can surprise us anymore: neon!

Auch hier: genauso sieht das aus! In natura! Ehrlich!

Das muss jetzt reichen. Wir hätten noch eine Menge mehr zu zeigen, aber dann wird dieser Eintrag ja nie fertig. Über fünf Stunden waren wir in Wai-O-Tapu. Kein Wunder, dass wir danach etwas Entspannung gebraucht haben.

Okay, that shall be enough. We would have a lot more to show you, but then this entry would never get done. We were in Wai-O-Tapu for more than five hours. No wonder that we needed a bit of relaxation afterwards.

Zum Abschluss noch eine nette Möwe. Unser Hotel ist nämlich direkt am See, und für den haben wir heute auch noch ein bisschen Zeit gefunden.

And to finish a nice seagull. Because our hotel is right at the lake, and for that we also found a little time today.

Heute war ein Geothermal-Tag 😉 Dazu zuerst: willkommen in Te Puia!

Today was a geothermal day 😉 And we start that with: welcome to Te Puia!

Hier gab es eine Menge zu sehen, auch Geisire, die nicht künstlich ausgelöst werden, und ein kleinerer war gerade aktiv, als wir kamen, das war unser erster Blick:

Here there is much to see, also geysers, which do not get triggered artificially, and one of the smaller ones was active, right as we came, so this was our first view:

Dann sind wir aber zuerst ins Kiwi-Haus. Hier werden verletzte Vögel aufgepäppelt und es gibt ein Zuchtprogramm. Drinnen ist es sehr dunkel, und Fotos sind sowieso nicht erlaubt.

But then we first went to the kiwi house. Here injured birds are taken care of and they have a breeding programme. It is very dark inside, and photos not allowed anyhow.

Ja, und dann ging es die Runde durchs Gelände. Wir haben so viel gesehen! Auch viel, das mit den Maori, den Ureinwohnern Neuseelands zu tun hat. Hier ist zum Beispiel eine Vogelfalle:

Yes, and then we walked all around the area. We have seen so much! Also a lot that has to do with the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. Here for example, a bird trap:

Doch die Hauptattraktionen waren natürlich andere – zum Teil schwer zu fotografieren, weil meist viel Dampf involviert war. Es gab tolle Schlammlöcher, da hat es geblubbert!

But the main attractions were something else of course – sometimes difficult to take photos of, because most of the time there was also much steeam involved. There were great mud pools, bubbling like crazy!

Das größte hier ist bis zu zehn Meter tief!

The biggest one here is up to ten meters deep!

Wo die meisten Geisire sind, sieht es unter anderem so aus:

Ja, Geisire. Als wir nah an diese Stelle kamen, die wir am Anfang von weitem gesehen hatten, war alles „ruhig“, also nur Dampf.

Yes, geysers. When we got close to this spot, that we had seen from afar at the beginning, everything was „quiet“, meaning, just steam.

Also haben wir uns erst andere Sachen angesehen, die „gelben Kissen“ zum Beispiel, sind sie nicht schön?

So we first looked at other stuff, the „yellow cushions“ for example, aren’t they beautiful?

Und dann ging es bei den Geisiren richtig los, auch der große war aktiv. Beeindruckend, wir haben sehr lange da gestanden und zugesehen.

And then the geysers really got going, the large one was also active. Impressive, we stood there for a long time and watched.

Toll war es, rundherum toll!

It was great, all around great!

Ja, das war Te Puia. Aber wir hatten noch nicht genug. Jetzt fühlten wir uns gut genug vorbereitet, auch den nächsten Schritt zu gehen … Richtung Unterwelt. Nächster Halt: Hell’s Gate (Höllentor)!

Yes, that was Te Puia. But we had not had enough yet. Now we rather felt ready to take on the next step … in the direction of the netherworld. Next stop: Hell’s Gate!

Hier gab es wieder andere Phänomene zu sehen. Und was uns hier sehr gefallen hat: Es gab auch Angaben zur Temperatur etc.

Here there were other phenomena to be seen. And what we really liked here: there was information given regarding temperature etc.

Viel Schwefel gab es hier.

Much sulphur around here.

Überall hat es geblubbert und gekocht. Oft wurden die 100°C überschritten.

Everywhere there were bubbles and it boiled. Often 100°C were surpassed.

Weniger Schlammlöcher als Schlammwasserlöcher …

Less mud pools, rather mud water pools …

Hier gibt es auch einen Wasserfall, der hat „nur“ 40°C. Da haben sich die Maori-Krieger ihre Wunden gewaschen.

There is a waterfall here as well, it has „only“ 40°C. Here the Maori warriors washed their wounds.

Und es gibt einen „Schlamm-Vulkan“! Der bricht alle 2-3 Tage mal aus, aber als wir da waren, war er ruhig.

And they have a „mud volcano“! It erupts every 2-3 days, but while we were around, all stayed quiet.

Jetzt waren wir schon an vier verschiedenen Geothermal-Orten, aber es wird nicht langweilig. Doch nach einem so vollen Tag sind wir müde, also: Gute Nacht!

Now we have been to four different geothermal spots already, but it does not get boring. But after such an eventful day, we are tired, so: good night!

Heute haben wir den Tag sehr schön begonnen: Mit Massagen. Erst war Torben dran, dann ich. Mmmmmmmh, schöööööööööön. – Und dann sind wir in einen wunderschönen Tag gestartet (abends um sechs waren es noch 30°C!).

Today we began the day very nicely: With massages. First it was Torben’s turn, then mine. Mmmmmmh, veeeeeeeeeeeery nice. – And then we started into a beautiful day (in the evening at 6pm, it was still 30°C!).

Zuerst mussten wir nochmal nach Omori zurück … wir haben gestern gemerkt, dass eine gewisse Dame ihr Handy wohl im Bett versteckt zurückgelassen hatte … Aber dieses Mal sind wir die andere Seite vom See entlang gefahren, da gabs wieder schöne Sachen zu sehen.

First we had to go back to Omori once more … yesterday we discovered that a certain lady seems to have left her cell phone hidden in the bed covers … But this time we drove along the other side of the lake, and once again there were nice things to see.

Oh, und habe ich schon erwähnt, dass es ziemlich warm war? Das fanden auch die Schafe …

Oh, and did I mention that it was quite warm? The sheep certainly thought so …

Aber es waren auch Schafe in der Sonne unterwegs. Irgendjemand muss ja beobachten, was wir da so tun ….

But there were also sheep around in the sunlight. Somebody has to check what we are doing, after all …

Wir haben nette Pflanzen entdeckt … wie jeden Tag 😉

Dann haben wir auch den ersten Elefanten des Tages gesehen:

Und wir sind an einem Wasserkraftwerk vorbeigefahren. Die Kraft, mit der das Wasser da raus-explodiert!

And we also passed a hydropower plant. The force with which the water comes exploding out of the tubes!

Wir haben auf dem Weg auch noch viel anderes gesehen, aber wir können ja nicht alle Fotos hier einstellen.

We did see much more on our way, but after all, we cannot post every single photo here.

Because we did after all – apart from picking up my cell phone – have another destination today: the hidden valley of Oarkei Korako.

Eine weitere „Thermal-Gegend“, wo Dämpfe aus dem Boden kommen, heiße Quellen brodeln und die bunten Farben einen ganz schwindlig machen.

Another „thermal area“, where steam comes out of the ground, where hot springs bubble and where the bright colours just screw with your head.

Aber – auch hier gab es einen Elefanten!

But – here as well, they had an elephant!

Überall Dämpfe und Hitze. Und hier brodelt es im Matsch.

Everywhere steam and heat. And here bubbling mud.

Wieder ein Höhepunkt – sehr, sehr sehenswert!
