The Big Journey

Kaum sind wir bei Mailand gelandet und wollen den Zug in die Stadt nehmen, stoßen wir schon auf die ersten Skulpturen:

No sooner have we landed near Milan and want to take the train into the city, when we already stumble across the first sculptures:

Und, ja, die hat Tättowierungen. Der Künstler Fabio Viale erschafft diese Marmor-Schönheiten.

And, yes, it has tattoos. The artist Fabio Viale creates these marble beauties.

Doch dann kam unser Zug, wir sind rein nach Mailand, zum Hauptbahnhof. Der sieht ziemlich beeindruckend aus, wenn auch etwas bombastisch … naja, den sehen wir uns genau an, wenn wir kein Gepäck dabei haben.

But then our train came, we rode into Milan, to the main station. It looks quite impressive, if a bit bombastic … oh well, we will take a closer look when we are not carrying all our luggage around.

Wir haben die Adresse für unsere Ferienwohnung gefunden. Vor Ort haben wir auf die Videos zurückgegriffen, die der Vermieter geschickt hatte. Sonst hätten wir nie die Schlüssel gefunden und danach gewusst, durch welche drei Tore wir müssten …

We found the address of our vacation apartment. On site we then relied on the videos that the owner had sent us. Otherwise we would never have found the keys and then known through which three gates we had to go …

Especially after our visit of the sewers yesterday, this is the perfect kickoff, to tell us what else we encountered in Vienna regarding this topic … As I mentioned we several times went to the city hall in the evenings to listen to music. There they always had an opening film:

Der Film “Der dritte Mann” aus dem Jahr 1949, der 2012 in einer Umfrage von Filmkritikern zum besten britischen Film aller Zeiten gewählt wurde, hat eine berühmte Szene, die in der Wiener Kanalisation spielt.

The film “The Third Man” from 1949, which 2012 in a survey amongst movie critics was voted to be the best British movie of all times, has a very famous scene that takes place in the sewers of Vienna.

Also bereiten wir uns jetzt für den Abstieg vor.

So we now prepare for our descent.

In vier Stops haben wir viel über die Kanalisation gelernt.

During four stops we learned much about canalization.

Zweimal wurden uns kurze Filme gezeigt, an diesem Standort über die Geschichte des Abwassers in Wien bis zu heutigen Arbeitsabläufen.

Twice we were shown short movies, at this location here about the history of the Vienna sewers up to the flow of work of today.

Unsere beiden Führer, Leopold (hier im Bild) und Didi haben uns erklärt, wie man sich fortbewegt …

… und was man dabei so braucht. Diese Art Stiefel werden heute nicht mehr benutzt.

Beim nächsten Halt haben wir dann erfahren, was hier unten alles gedreht wurde. Hier seht Ihr aus Der dritte Mann, wie Orson Wells genau den Eingang nutzt, den wir auch genommen haben.

At the next stop we then learned about all that was filmed down here. In the picture you see in The Third Man how Orson Wells takes exactly the access that we entered by.

Die Mauer, die Ihr in der Mitte seht, hält das Wasser normalerweise. Aber für Zeiten des Überlaufes ist auch gesorgt.

The wall that you see in the middle can normally hold the water. But they are also prepared for times of high water.

Am Ende sind wir zum Wienfluss hinunter, der 2km lang überwölbt wurde, weil der Kaiser oben eine Prachtstraße wollte.

Finally we went down to the river Wienfluss which for 2km has been overarched, because the emperor wanted a wide boulevard on top.

Hier unten gibt es auf jeden Fall einen „Walk of Fame“!

In any case, down here they have a “Walk of Fame”!

Es war unheimlich interessant und auch sehr lustig. Sehr zu empfehlen auf jeden Fall! Danach sind wir zu viert weiter … da kommt jetzt das Apfeltürmchen aus dem Titel ins Spiel.

Wir waren nämlich im “Green Cottage“ essen. Ein Muss, wenn man nach Wien kommt und die chinesische Küche mag.

Die haben so viele Auszeichnungen, es ist nicht zu glauben. Die älteste, die ich entdeckt habe, war von 1993, die aktuellste von 2022.

They have so many awards, you won’t believe it. The oldest one that I discovered was from 1993, the most recent one from 2022.

Wir waren auf jeden Fall sehr satt, als wir mit dem Essen fertig waren!

In any case, we were very full when we were done eating!

Ja, und dann sind Renate, Torben und ich noch in die prachtvolle Nationalbibliothek.

Well, and then Renate, Torben and I went on to the magnificent National Library.

Ganz ehrlich: Man weiß überhaupt nicht, wo man zuerst hinsehen soll!

In all honesty: You are just at a loss as to what to look at first!

Natürlich stehen viele alte Bücher auf den Regalen – manche brauchen etwas Halt 😊

Naturally, there are lots of old books on the shelves – some of them need some support 😊

Und es gibt selbstverständlich auch besondere Exponate, die gezeigt werden: „Schwarzes Gebetbuch: Es haben sich weltweit nur sieben Handschriften erhalten, deren Pergament in schwarzer Farbe getränkt wurde, um so die Leuchtkraft von Gold, Silber und Deckfarben stärker zur Geltung zu bringen. Das Wiener Exemplar, von dem hier die Gefangennahme Christi gezeigt wird, ist der prachtvollste dieser Codices, die alle im 3. Viertel des 15. Jh.s in Brügge entstanden sind. Die Färbung hatte allerdings zur Folge, dass das Pergament immer spröder wurde und Umblättern mittlerweile zum Zerbrechen führen würde. Deshalb müssen die Seiten nun einzeln zwischen Acryl-Glasplatten montiert in einem Spezialtresor aufbewahrt werden.“

And of course there are also special exhibits shown: “Black prayerbook: Worldwide, only seven manuscripts have survived made of parchment that was stained black to give greater illuminative effect to gold, silver and paint. The Vienna copy, of which the scene of Christ’s arrest is displayed, is the most magnificent of these codices, all of which were created in the third quarter of the 15^th century in Bruges. However, the staining led to the parchment becoming increasingly brittle in the course of time, and turning the page would now cause it to break up. For this reason, the pages must now be mounted individually between acrylic glass panels and kept in a special safe.”

In den Infokästen konzentrierte man sich auf das Thema Garten, Pflanzen und ähnliches. Dazu gab es auch Pläne und Fotos zu sehen, hier Gärtnerinnen auf der Prater Hauptallee in Wien 1966.

Heute sind Torben und ich alleine los. Als erstes sind wir zum Parlament und dort in die Straßenbahn.

Today Torben and I left on our own. First of all we went to the Parliament and there got into a tram.

Dann sind wir ein kleines Stück gelaufen, zur Strudlhofstiege. Diese Treppe, die zwei Straßen verbindet, ist sehr schön und gilt als bedeutendes Bauwerk des Jugendstils. Die Eröffnung war am 29.11.1910.

Then we walked a short way, to the Strudlhofstiege. These stairs that connect two streets, is really very pretty and is considered a significant edifice of the Jugendstil era. The opening was 29.11.1910.

An zwei Brunnen kommt man vorbei, wie man nach oben geht.

You pass two fountains when you go up.

Wir sind dann weiter zur absolut wunderschönen Votivkirche.

We then walked on to the absolutely beautiful Votivkirche church.

Viele interessante Details gibt es zu entdecken … drinnen und draußen. Übrigens wurde die Kirche 1879 nach 23 Jahren Bauzeit anlässlich der Silberhochzeit des Kaiserpaares geweiht. Und gebaut wurde sie aus Dank, dass ein Attentat auf den jungen Kaiser Franz Joseph I. am 18.02.1853 nicht gelang.

There are many interesting details to discover … inside and out. By the way, the church was christened 1879 after 23 years of construction, on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of the imperial couple. And it was built in gratitude that an assassination attempt on the young emperor Franz Joseph I failed on 18.02.1853.

Innen drin gibt es wunderschöne bemalte Elemente, tolle Leuchter, …

… und detailreiche Fenster, auch eines, das Insassen eines Konzentrationslagers zeigt.

Nach einer Stunde sind wir dann wieder weiter. Im Rathaus gibt es eine Ausstellung, die uns interessiert:

Und es hat sich gelohnt. Auch hier waren wir eine Stunde. Und wir haben eine Menge gelernt.

And it was worth it. Here we spent an hour as well. And we learned much.

Zum Beispiel, wie sehr sich Österreich zunächst nicht vom deutschen 3. Reich vereinnahmen lassen wollte.

For example how much Austria initially did not want to be swallowed up by the German 3^rd Reich.

Und hier im Rathaus hat Torben auch etwas tolles entdeckt: einen Paternoster!

And here in the city hall, Torben also discovered something spectacular: a paternoster!

Ich wollte immer mal mit einem fahren!

I had always wanted to ride one!

Wie wir schon da waren, haben wir uns auch noch den wunderschönen Innenhof angesehen.

And since we were here already, we also took a look at the gorgeous courtyard.

Da gibt es auch viel grün …

Nach dieser kurzen Pause sind wir weiter gegangen, zu einem ehemaligen kaiserlichen Gewächshaus.

After this short break, we walked on, to a former imperial greenhouse.

Im linken Teil ist ein Schmetterlingshaus untergebracht.

In the left part, a butterfly house is located.

Überall fliegen sie herum, toll! Und einer hatte an Torben einen Narren gefressen, dreimal ist er auf ihm gelandet.

They fly around all over the place, great! And one of them got stuck on Torben, three times it landed on him.

Aber da drin war es natürlich noch heißer … also brauchen wir jetzt wirklich eine Pause: Im Café nebenan.

But in there it was, naturally, even hotter … so we now really need a break: In the café next door.

Also einmal lecker essen!

So, let us have a delicious meal!

Denn danach geht es weiter. Kurz durch den Burggarten, auch vorbei am Mozart-Denkmal.

For afterwards we travel on. Quickly through the Burggarten, also past the Mozart monument.

Was wir uns ansehen wollten, ist ein Mahnmal gegen Krieg und Faschismus, das aus mehreren Installationen besteht.

What we wanted to see was a memorial against war and fascism, which consists of several parts.

Dies hier ist mit Sicherheit der Teil, der einem am meisten die Luft abschnürt.

This one is for sure the component that most makes you gasp.

Wir sind dann zu unserer Ferienwohnung zurück, und abends waren wir mit den Eltern wieder am Rathaus. „Austropop“ gab es dieses Mal: Seiler und Speer.

We then went back to our holiday apartment, and in the evening once again we walked with the parents to the city hall. This time they presented “Austropop”: Seiler and Speer.

Und damit sagen wir gute Nacht!

Nach dem aufregenden Abend gestern sind wir heute erst um elf los. Aber es ging uns gut, anders als diesem Anzugträger … eine interessante Kunstinstallation im U-Bahn Treppenhaus, wenn auch wegen der Spiegelungen schlecht zu fotografieren 😊

After the exciting evening yesterday we did not leave before eleven today. But we felt fine, quite differently from this guy in a suit … an interesting art installation in the subway stairwell, though difficult to take photos of, due to the reflections 😊

Dann haben wir pflichtbewusst das Hundertwasserhaus besucht.

Then we dutifully visited the Hundertwasserhaus.

… und auch das Terrassencafé dort. Der Germknödel war superlecker!

Frisch gestärkt sind wir weiter. Es ist wieder sehr heiß und wir haben die hier lieben gelernt: In Wien gibt es „Sommerspritzer“: Sprühduschen auf Hydranten.

Invigorated we traveled on. It is once again very hot and we learned to love these here: In Vienna they have “summer showers”: spraying showers at hydrants.

Das Riesenrad steht hier seit 1897! Aber ich hatte keine Ahnung vom „Vorprogramm“. Wir kamen in einen recht dunklen Raum, dann ging die Zimmerdecke auf:

In einem Kreis sind “Waggons“ aufgestellt, die Szenen der Wiener Geschichte zeigen.

„Waggons“ are set up in a circle, which show scenes of Vienna’s history.

Und das mit beweglichen Teilen! Hier der Bau der berühmtesten Kirche: „In der engen mittelalterlichen Stadt wuchs der Stephansdom allmählich zum Himmel. Wien gewann an politischer und kultureller Bedeutung.“

And all that with moving parts! Here the erection of the most famous church: “In the narrow streets of the medieval city St. Stephan’s Cathedral gradually rose up into the skies. Vienna grew in both political and cultural importance.“

Auf gehts! Das Riesenrad ist 64,75 m hoch, hat einen Durchmesser von 60,96 m und fährt mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 2,7 km/h.

On we go! The Ferris wheel is 64,7 m high, has a diameter of 60,96 m and moves with a speed of 2,7 km/h.

Hm, trauen wir uns da rein?

Na klar, auch wenn wir nur eine Bank und nicht Tisch und Stühle hatten …

Natürlich hat man einen tollen Blick über die Stadt. Aber man möchte nicht meinen, wie schnell die Fahrt vorbei ist. Es gäbe ja noch so viel zu sehen!

Of course you have a wonderful view across the city. But you won’t believe how fast the ride is over. And there would be so much more to see!

Toll war es – und jedem, der nicht an Höhenangst leidet, sehr zu empfehlen!

It was great – and shall hereby be highly recommended to all who do not suffer from fear of heights!

Torben und ich haben uns dann noch zwei Türme angesehen:

Im Augarten stehen zwei von sechs Wiener Flaktürmen. Der Gefechtsturm und hier dann der Leitturm. Gebaut wurden die Türme zwischen 1942 und 1945 von Zwangsarbeiter/-innen.

In Augarten you see two of six anti-aircraft towers. The gun tower and then here the control tower. The towers were built between 1942 and 1945, by forced labourers.

Heute werden die Türme von jeder Menge Tauben bewohnt. Aber auch die haben sich viel im Schatten aufgehalten. Habe ich schon erwähnt, dass es sehr heiß war? Aber meine Rettung naht!

Today the towers are inhabited by countless pigeons. But even they kept mainly to the shade today. Did I mention that it was terribly hot? But my rescue is on its way!

Wir haben uns dann auf den Heimweg gemacht und uns dabei an alle Regeln gehalten.

We then embarked on our way back, and during that kept to all the rules.

Auf die Weise konnten wir abends schön essen gehen. Seit 1990 gibt es das Marienhof, das auch im Innenhof Tische hat.

That way we could nicely go out for dinner in the evening. The Marienhof has existed since 1990, and it also has tables in the inner courtyard.

Und die Marienstatue dürfte noch einmal 100 Jahre älter sein …

And the statue of the Virgin Mary can be assumed to be another 100 years older …

Übrigens gab es hier auch … Natürlich: Wiener Schnitzel. Und ein bisschen Hintergrundwissen dazu in der Karte: „Bereits im 12. Jahrhundert findet man in Konstantinopel ein in Teig gehülltes und anschließend in Fett ausgebackenes Fleisch. Jedoch waren bis ins 19. Jahrhundert die Synonyme Schnitz und Schnitzchen üblicher.“

By the way, here they also had … Naturally: Wiener Schnitzel. And a bit of background information about it in the menu: “In the 12^th century already, you find in Constantinople meat covered in dough and afterwards fried in fat. But up to the 19^th century the synonyms “Schnitz” and “Schnitzchen” were more common.”

Um fünf Uhr nachmittags sind wir wieder los. Wir hatten uns extra den richtigen Bus rausgesucht … der dann überfüllt war als er kam und außerdem nicht die normale Strecke fuhr!! Also sind wir zu Fuß weiter.

At five in the afternoon we left again. We had explicitly selected the correct bus … which then was already overstuffed with people when it came and on top of that did not go the normal route!! So we walked the rest of the way.

Der aufmerksame Beobachter merkt, dass die Zeichen für Fußgänger und Radfahrer lustig hin und her springen. Slalom?

The attentive observer notices that the signs for pedestrians and cyclists merrily jump from side to side. Slalom?

Naja, auf diese Weise haben wir einen Teil des Praters gesehen, der ja ein großer Park ist, nicht nur Jahrmarkt.

Oh well, this way we saw a bit of the Prater, which really is a huge park, not just an amusement park.

Wir sind wieder zu Fuß los … und der „freiwillige“ Durchgang ist uns gestern schon aufgefallen.

We once again started out on foot … and the “voluntary” passage we noticed yesterday already.

Also sind wir heute da durch – ganz freiwillig.

So we went through there today – totally voluntarily.

Wir sind an der Hofburg vorbei gegangen.

We walked past the Hofburg.

Auch an ihm vorbei: Erzherzog Karl wird hier gezeigt, und dies war das erste Mal, dass ein Reiterdenkmal gelang, bei dem das Pferd nur auf den Hinterbeinen steht. Der Künstler Anton Dominik Fernkorn wurde dafür sogar in den Adelsstand erhoben.

Also past him: Archduke Karl is shown here, and it was the first time that an equestrial sculpture was managed, where the horse is standing only on its hind legs. The artist Anton Dominik Fernkorn was even ennobled for that.

Unser Ziel heute: der Stephansdom.

Our destination today: the Stephansdom.

Unter strengen Blicken haben wir uns das Innere angesehen.

Under a watchful gaze we looked at the interior.

Da wurde gebaut …

There was construction going on …

… und es gab jede Menge Leute.

… and there was a huge crowd.

Tja, eine nette Kirche, aber … auch nicht so berauschend. Vor allem die Fenster haben uns enttäuscht. – Aber das hier ist interessant: Hier hat sich der Baumeister, Anton Pilgram, verewigt.

Well, a nice church, but … not all that exciting. Especially the windows we thought were disappointing. – But this here is interesting: Here the master builder, Anton Pilgram, eternalized himself.

Hinunter in die Katakomben sind wir nicht. Den Sankt-Stephan-Kugelspringer hätten wir eh nicht gesehen, der ist nur einen halben Millimeter lang. 1998 hat man ihn entdeckt.

We did not go down to the catacombs. We would not have seen the Sankt-Stephan springtail in any case, it is only half a millimeter long. 1998 it was discovered.

Torben und ich sind stattdessen den Südturm hochgestiegen, alle 343 Stufen. Die Grundsteinlegung war 1359.

Torben and I instead climbed up the southern tower, all the 343 steps. The cornerstone was laid in 1359.

Da sieht man irgendwann ganz schön k.o. aus …

With that eventually you look quite beat …

Hier hing bis zum 12. April 1945 die Glocke „Pummerin“. Sie wurde 1711 aus den Resten türkischer Kanonen gegossen. Beim Dombrand 1945 ist sie zerschellt.

Here the bell „Pummerin“ hung until 12 April 1945. It had been cast 1711 out of remains of Turkish cannons. During the cathedral fire 1945 it smashed.

Von hier ging es noch ein gutes Stück weiter.

From here it was another fair bit to go.

Dann endlich oben! Der Turm war lange das höchste Gebäude der Stadt. Deswegen überwachte das Personal der Feuerwehr bis ins 20. Jahrhundert die Umgebung. Es gab eine Feuerglocke, und auch das Sprachrohr wurde zur Warnung der Bevölkerung genutzt. „Feurio!“

Finally all the way up! For a long time the tower was the highest building of the city. That is why the staff of the fire brigade watched over the surroundings from up here, up to the 20^th century. There was a fire bell, and the speaking tube was also used to warn the citizens. “Fire!”

Aus vier Fenstern kann man über die Stadt blicken, in alle vier Himmelsrichtungen.

Out of four windows you can look across the city, in all four cardinal directions.

Wir haben die Ausblicke genossen und sind dann wieder weiter.

We savoured the views and then traveled on.

Zur Bäckerstraße. Da ist ein letzter Rest einer Wandmalerei zu sehen. Im Mittelalter waren die wohl üblich. Hier spielen ein Wolf und eine Kuh Backgammon!?

To the Bäckerstraße. There you can see a last bit of a wall painting. It seems that in the middle ages, those were very common. Here a wolf and a cow play backgammon!?

Dann ging es mal wieder zum Rathausplatz, wir haben Hunger. Unterwegs kann man Plakate sehen:

Then once again we went to the city hall square, we are hungry. On the way you can see posters:

Aber Sting war ja gestern … außerdem haben wir ihn ja erst letztes Jahr in St. Etienne gesehen.

But Sting had performed yesterday … and anyhow, we have just seen him last year in St. Etienne.

Also haben wir uns einen netten Platz beim Brunnen gesucht und gegessen. Und dann Pause gemacht …

So we found ourselves a nice spot at the fountain and ate. And then we took a break …

… wir haben nämlich heute abend noch etwas vor!

Wir sind wieder bei herrlichem Wetter und großer Hitze zu Fuß unterwegs. In Wien sind an allen möglichen Ecken Blumen und Büsche zu sehen. Dies hier sind die offiziellen Wiener Sommerblumen für dieses Jahr.

Once again we are up and about on foot, in gorgeous weather and great heat. In Vienna at all kinds of places you see flowers and bushes. These here are the official Vienna summer flowers for this year.

Unser erster Halt war beim Justizpalast. Torben hatte herausgefunden, dass die Eingangshalle ganz superschön ist.

Our first stop was at the palace of justice. Torben had found out that the entrance hall is absolutely gorgeous.

Aber man kommt nicht so einfach rein. Taschen mussten wir draußen lassen, und meine Kamera durfte ich auch nicht mitnehmen!

But you don’t get in all that easily. We had to leave all bags outside, and I was not allowed to take my camera either!

Doch drinnen hat ein Pärchen mit dem Handy fotografiert. Also bin ich zurückmarschiert und durfte meinen Fotoapparat doch mitnehmen!

But inside a couple took photos with their phone. So I marched back and then I was allowed to take my camera after all!

Wer nach Wien kommt: unbedingt ansehen!

Wir sind dann ins Museumsquartier gelaufen.

We then walked to the museum quarter.

Und was suchen wir da?

And what do we look for there?

Eine Kunstinstallation, die es nicht mehr gibt, wie wir nach viel Herumgehen erfahren haben.

An art installation which is not existent anymore, as we found out after much walking.

Aber beim Leute-Fragen wurde ich auf die „Libelle“ auf dem Leopold Museum hingewiesen, eine Kulturterrasse.

But when asking people for help I was made aware of the “Libelle” (dragonfly) on top of the Leopold Museum, an event space.

Von hier hat man natürlich einen tollen Blick über die Stadt, aber es gibt auch eine kleine Bar.

From here you have a fantastic view over the city of course, but there is also a little bar.

Wir sind dann weiter, unter einer großen Kreuzung durch. Hier gab es interessante Infos zu lesen, zum Beispiel dass dieses Jahr bisher 753.354 Tonnen Müll in Wien angefallen sind. Oder aber auch:

We then went on, below a large intersection. Here there was interesting information to read, for example that this year so far 753,354 tons of garbage have accumulated in Vienna. But also this:

Wir sind weitergelaufen zur Karlskirche.

On we walked to the Karlskirche.

Kaiser Karl VI. gelobte 1713, eine Kirche zu bauen, damit die Pest enden würde. 1714 war das auch tatsächlich der Fall.

Emperor Karl VI had promised to build a church in 1713, hoping that that would end the plague. And in 1714 it actually did come to an end.

1716 – 1737 wurde die Kirche gebaut. Sie ist das bedeutendste sakrale Bauwerk des Barock in Wien.

1716 – 1737 the church was built. It is the most important sacral building of the Baroque era in Vienna.

In Ausstellungsräumen erfährt man viel über die Geschichte, sieht alte Gewänder und auch einen Querschnitt der Kirche.

In exhibition rooms you learn much about the history, see old garments and also a cross section of the church.

Und dann kamen wir hoch aufs Dach! Spannend.

And then we got up to the roof! Exciting.

… sind wir zum Rathausplatz und haben noch lecker gegessen.

Danach gabs für die Fotografin einen ruhigen Abend zu Hause … also keine weiteren Fotos 😊

Heute sind wir erst mal Richtung Rathaus gelaufen (am Ende der Straße sieht man die Seitenansicht). Hier gibt es ein wunderschönes Gebäude nach dem nächsten!

Today we first walked towards the city hall (at the end of the street you see it from the side). There are just so many gorgeous buildings here, one after the other!

Zuerst sind wir am Justizpalast vorbei und am Parlament.

First we passed the house of justice and the parliament.

Vielleicht war der Goldschmuck früher überall zu sehen?

Maybe in former times these golden applications went all around?

Alles gigantisch, viele Figuren und Brunnen und … soviel kriegt man auf kein Bild. Also gehen wir weiter und halten uns an kleinere Motive:

It is all gigantic, lots of statues and fountains and … you cannot get it all on a photo. So we walk on and look for smaller motifs.

Es gibt in der Wiener Innenstadt Ampeln, die Vielfalt zeigen … 2015 wurden sie im Rahmen des Eurovision Song Contest aufgestellt.

In downtown Vienna there are traffic lights that show diversity … they were put up 2015 in connection with the Eurovision Song Contest.

Und dann sind wir beim Rathaus. Davor findet das Wiener Filmfestival statt – deswegen die Tische und Buden und so.

And then we reached the city hall. In front of it the Vienna Film Festival is taking place – thus all the tables and stalls and such.

Auf jeden Fall ein tolles Gebäude!

Wir sind weiter mit der Straßenbahn. Dann mussten wir in die U-Bahn, an der Haltestelle hab ich das hier entdeckt:

We traveled on with a tram. Then we had to change to the subway, at the stop I discovered this here:

Und dann hatten wir die Station Hietzing erreicht. Hier wurde speziell für den Kaiser ein eigener Zugang gebaut.

And then we reached the station Hietzing. Here just for the emperor, they built a separate entrance.

Kaiser Franz Josef war aber nur zweimal hier. Schade, allein die Decke ist schon prachtvoll!

Emperor Franz Josef was here only twice though. Too bad, even just the ceiling is magnificent!

Wir sind dann weiter gelaufen in Richtung Schloss Schönbrunn. Vorbei am Palmenhaus …

We then walked on in the direction of the palace Schönbrunn. Past the palm house …

… durch den botanischen Garten … Habe ich erwähnt, dass es unglaublich heiß war? Da verrutscht sogar das Foto.

Wir haben also im Tirolergarten erst einmal Mittagspause gemacht. Hier in der Gegend bekamen früher die jungen Erzherzöge den ersten Jagdunterricht.

So we took a lunch break at the restaurant Tirolergarten. This is the area where in the old times the young archdukes got their first hunting lessons.

Einer von uns hatte Huhn … aber nicht so eines, oder? So ein Seidenhuhn kann übrigens nicht fliegen und hat fünf Zehen, eine mehr als andere Hühner.

One of us had chicken … but not one of these, surely? Such a silkie chicken is unable to fly, by the way, and they have five toes, one more than other chicken.

Wir sind dann weiter. Erst oben auf dem Hügel zur Gloriette.

We then went on. First to the Gloriette at the top of the hill.

Da wurde eine aufwendige Hochzeit gefeiert.

Where an elaborate wedding was celebrated.

Von hier sieht man runter auf das Schloss.

From here you can look down to the palace.

Aber erst kommt man noch am prunkvollen Neptunbrunnen vorbei …

Hier und da haben sich mal Wolken vor die Sonne geschoben. Aber es war einfach heiß, heiß, heiß.

Every once in a while a cloud would cover the sun. But it was just hot, hot, hot.

Gut, dass all die Blumen bewässert werden müssen. Auch wenn das Wasser im ersten Moment recht kalt war!

Good thing that all the flowers need to be watered. Even if the water at first was quite cold!

Wir sind dann auch wieder weiter. – Wie es grün wurde.

We traveled on finally. – When it switched to green.

Nach einer Pause in der Unterkunft sind wir abends wieder zum Rathaus. Und dieses Mal habe ich in der Nähe auch endlich den „Wehrmann in Eisen“ gefunden: Die Figur wurde zuerst 1915 aufgestellt. Wer etwas spendete für die Witwen und Waisen des Weltkrieges, durfte einen Nagel in die Figur schlagen.

After a break in our lodging we once again went to the city hall in the evening. And this time in the vicinity, I finally found the “Wehrmann in Eisen” (Private in Iron): This sculpture was first erected in 1915. Those who donated money for the widows and orphans of the world war, was allowed to drive a nail into the sculpture.

Und dann haben wir uns hingesetzt und klassische Musik gehört. In Kitzbühel wurde live gespielt und gesungen – verschiedene Opernarien und auch leichtere Musik – und das wurde zu uns übertragen.

And then we sat down and listened to classical music. In Kitzbühel they played and sung live – different opera arias and also some light music – and that was broadcast to us.

Schön wars!

7:15 ging unser Zug … die Nacht davor war kurz und sehr warm … Die Fotografin war müde! Erst mittags habe ich erste Bilder gemacht. Wir mussten in Würzburg umsteigen und hatten genug Zeit für ein schnelles Mittagessen. Torben hat bestellt, ich bin kurz weiter zu einer Barockkirche mit einer schönen Mittelkuppel. Gebaut von dem italienischen Architekten Antonio Petrini, 1670 – 1691.

7:15 am our train left … the night before that had been short and very warm … The photographer was tired! I did not take the first pictures until noon. We had to change trains there and had enough time for a short lunch. Torben ordered, I quickly walked on to a baroque church with a pretty cupola in the middle. It was built by the Italian architect Antonio Petrini, 1670 – 1691.

Nur ein ganz kurzer Blick, dann musste ich zurück …

A very quick look, then I had to rush back …

Wir haben im Restaurant “Best Friends“ gegessen, vietnamesiche Küche und Sushi. Der Service war top, das Essen lecker, aber am besten: Man sitzt zwischen lauter Blumen und Büschen, toll!

We ate in the restaurant “Best Friends”, Vietnamese kitchen and sushi. Service was top, the food was yummy, but the best part: You sit in between flowers and bushes, great!

Dann mussten wir zurück, unseren Zug kriegen – aber der hatte dann 15 Minuten Verspätung.

Then we had to get back, catch our train – but then it was 15 minutes late.

Bis wir dann in Wien waren, hatte sich die Verspätung auf eine Stunde erhöht …

Until we then finally got to Vienna, the delay had risen to one hour …

Dann noch eine halbe Stunde Bus, vorbei an vielen schönen Fassaden …

Then another half hour of bus ride, past many gorgeous house fronts …

Und dann waren wir bei der Unterkunft, hier der Innenhof.

And then we had reached our lodging, here the patio.

Wir wohnen unter dem Dach, hier unser Schlafzimmer.

We live under the roof, here our bedroom.

Die Schwiegereltern sind schon da.

My parents-in-law are already here.

Wein und was zum Knabbern zum Abend, dann ab ins Bett!

Wine and some snacks for the evening, then off to bed!
