The Big Journey

Ja, ich weiß, schon wieder morgendlicher Himmel. Aber sind die Farben nicht einfach atemberaubend???

Kaum war es halb sieben sind auch andere Reisende so langsam aus dem Bett gekrabbelt … 😊

No sooner did it turn six thirty than other travelers also slowly crawled out of their beds … 😊

Kurz vor sieben kam das übliche Pilot-Boot, um uns zu unserem Liegeplatz zu geleiten.

Close to seven then the usual pilot boat came to lead us to our berth.

Seltsam war, dass dann mehr und mehr andere Schiffe auch unterwegs waren …

What was strange, was that more and more other ships were also about …

… und die haben alle an einer imaginären Linie gestoppt!

… and they all stopped at an imaginary line!

Dann um 7:30 Uhr ein Knall und sie sind losgezischt! Wir dachten erst, das wäre eine Art Regatta, aber später haben wir herausgefunden, dass die Fischer erst dann los dürfen.

Until they all suddenly rushed off! We first thought, maybe it is some kind of regatta, but later we found out that the fishing boats are not allowed to leave earlier.

So, nach all der morgendlichen Aufregung ist es Zeit für einen Ausflug: Es geht mal wieder zu einer Wanderung!

So, after all that morning excitement, it is time for an excursion: Once again we will go on a hike!

Beim Herumstehen und Warten hat man natürlich wieder Zeit, sich zumsehen und Fotos zu machen. Ist das ein Sturmtaucher?

While we are standing around and waiting, there is of course once again time to look around and take pictures. Is that a shearwater?

Natürlich war ich nicht die einzige, die diese Idee hatte …

Of course I was not the only one who had that idea …

Da saßen immer wieder Maskentölpel auf Bojen herum – hier ein Foto von mittags.

You kept seeing masked boobies sitting around on the buoys – here a picture from midday.

Und am späten Nachmittag waren es dann schon drei samt Möwe …

And in the late afternoon then it was three of them already, plus a seagull …

Aber wir sind ja eigentlich noch beim Morgen. Jetzt geht es endlich auf unseren Ausflug. Torben und ich sind jetzt im Bus und kriegen die erste Sehenswürdigkeit gezeigt: Der Sendall-Tunnel.

But we are really still at morning time. Now finally we get going on our excursion. Torben and I are now in the bus and get shown the first sight: The Sendall tunnel.

Der war mal nur für Frauen, die Männer mussten den beschwerlichen Weg über den Hügel nehmen. Links im Gemäuer ist es noch zu erkennen: Females only.

That used to be only for women, the men had to take the more cumbersome path across the hill. On the left in the masonry you can still see it: Females only.

Unser Eindruck: sehr bunt, sehr lebendig, voller Kabel und steiler Straßen 😊 Überall sind die Nationalfarben zu sehen: am 7.2. wird der Unabhängigkeitstag gefeiert.

Our impression: very colourful, very lively, full of cables and steep roads 😊 Everywhere you see the national colours: 7.2. they will celebrate their Independence Day.

Rot, gelb, grün wohin man sieht.

Red, yellow, green wherever you look.

Aber natürlich gab es noch mehr zu sehen im Vorbeifahren …

But of course there was still more to see while driving past …

Und dann gabs einen Zwischenstopp. Hier konnte man jede Menge Gewürze kaufen und die Toiletten benutzen. Wir sind jetzt beim Grand Etang Forest Reserve, das 1906 eingerichtet wurde. Und da die Touristen ja alle ein bisschen Geld dalassen sollen, halten wohl viele Touren hier an. Das hier ist ein Foto des kleinen Museums, das Dietmar auf ihrer Tour gemacht hat.

And then we had a short stopover. Here you could buy all kinds of spices, and also use the washrooms. We are now at the Grand Etang Forest Reserve that had been first established in 1906. And since the tourists are meant to all spend some money here, it seems that many tours make a stop here. This is a photo of the small museum which Dietmar took on their tour.

Von hier kann man auch den Grand Etang Crater Lake sehen, der vor einigen 15.000 bis 25.000 Jahren durch vulkanische Bewegungen entstand.

From here you can also see the Grand Etang Crater Lake that was formed by volcanic activity some 15,000 to 25,000 years ago.

Dann ging es weiter und wir haben den Startpunkt unserer Wanderung zu den Seven Sisters erreicht. Und gleich am Anfang haben unsere Guides uns eine Menge zum Thema Gewürze gezeigt:

Then we drove on and we reached the starting point for our hike to the Seven Sisters. And right at the start, our guides showed us a lot regarding the topic of spices:

Wir dürfen hier an der Rinde vom Zimtbaum riechen, ein unheimlich intensiver Duft, und dann Muskatnüsse mit der inneren knallroten Schicht betrachten.

Here we get to smell the bark of the cinnamon tree, an incredible intensive fragrance, and then we get to inspect nutmeg apples with the bright red inner lining.

Diese rote Muskatblüte wird auch als Gewürz genutzt.

This red mace is also used as a spice.

Wir sind dann losgewandert. Es gab links und rechts so viele spannende Pflanzen und Früchte zu sehen.

We then started our hike. To the left and right there were so many interesting plants and fruits to see.

Doch wir können gar nicht so viel herumgucken – wir müssen uns auf den Weg konzentrieren.

But we cannot look around too much – we have to focus on the path.

Der war nämlich sehr schlammig und es ging oft steil bergauf und bergab. Am Anfang waren allen dicke Wanderstäbe angeboten worden – da wir Wanderstiefel tragen und ich die Hände für die Kamera frei haben will, haben wir darauf verzichtet.

Because that was quite muddy and often went straight up or down. At the beginning, everybody had been offered sturdy walking sticks – but since we are wearing hiking boost and I want to keep my hands free for the camera, we declined.

Aber es gab immer wieder Geländer und Steine als Treppenstufen. Das kriegen wir hin!

But there were banisters time and again, and rocks as steps. We will manage this!

Und natürlich waren wir bald wieder ganz am Ende der Truppe, weil es ja doch eine Menge zu sehen und fotografieren gab. An vielen Stellen wuchs Bambus.

And of course it did not take long until we were at the very end of the group, because there was a lot to see and take photos of, of course. Bamboo grew in many spots.

Ach so, und zu filmen gibts dann auch mal was!

Und dann haben wir die untersten Wasserfälle von den sieben erreicht, derentwegen es „Seven Sisters“ heißt.

And then we reached the lowest of the seven waterfalls that lead to the name “Seven Sisters”.

Natürlich mussten von unserer Wandergruppe die meisten sofort ins Wasser …

Of course most from our hiking group just had to jump into the water right away …

Dafür hatten wir natürlich keine Zeit, es gibt zuviel zu sehen.

For that we naturally had no time, there was so much to see.

Time and again we spot “lobster claws”.

Oh, jetzt bin ich wieder zu weit zurückgefallen … muss ein bisschen laufen.

A really beautiful hike!

Auch wenn es am Schluss lange bergauf ging – das war ganz schön anstrengend.

Even if at the end the path went uphill for a long time – that was quite exhausting.

Man kann sich ja auch immer mal wieder stärken.

But then, there is always the chance to fortify oneself.

Tja, und dann waren wir auch schon wieder bei unserem kleinen Bus und sind zurückgefahren, über sehr huckelige Straßen, voller Kurven und Höhen und Tiefen. (Und da wird auch gerne und oft gehupt 😊)

Well, and then we had already reached our little bus again and started the drive back, across very bumpy roads, full of turns and ups and downs. (And people like to use their horns, frequently 😊)

Jetzt haben wir natürlich keine Zeit dafür, wir müssen an Bord, Zeit fürs Mittagessen.

Now of course we have no time for that, we have to get on board, it is time for lunch.

Hab ich schon mal die riesige Auswahl an Nachtischen erwähnt? Da kann man nicht nein sagen.

Did I ever mention the huge selection of desserts? One just cannot say no here.

Danach haben wir uns in unserer Kabine ein bisschen ausgeruht und vor allem besprochen, wie der morgige Tag ablaufen wird, denn heute ist ja unser letzter Abend an Bord …

Then we relaxed a bit in our cabin and most importantly talked about how things will go tomorrow. After all, today shall be our last evening on board …

Auch mit den anderen haben wir das beredet. Und dabei hat Dietmar uns verraten, dass er herausgefunden hat, wie man auf eine kleine Aussichtsebene im Bug kommt. (die war mir ehrlicherweise auch von außen bisher gar nicht aufgefallen!)

We also chatted about this with the others. And in doing so, Dietmar let us know that he found out how to get to a small viewing deck in the bow of the ship. (honestly, even from the outside, I had never noticed it before!)

Ich also nichts wie hin. Doch der Weg ist lang: erst duch die Disko Nightfly auf Deck 6 …

So of course I went to check it out. But the way there is long: first through the discotheque Nightfly on deck 6 …

… dann in eine Art Champagner-Bar …

… then into a kind of champagne bar …

… dort eine Treppe nach oben, durch die nächste Tür und: tada!

… there up one flight of stairs, through the next door and: [drum roll]!

Der Blick ist natürlich toll.

Of course the view is great.

Und ich hatte das Glück, dass ich die meiste Zeit ganz alleine war.

And I was lucky in that I was alone there most of the time.

Wahrscheinlich ist es gut, dass ich bisher nichts von diesem Ausguck wusste. Sonst hätte ich ja jeden Tag hierher pilgern müssen, um zu sehen, was es Backbord zu sehen gibt. Dann hätte ich ja NOCH mehr Fotos gemacht …

It is probably a good thing that so far I did not know about this viewing deck. Because otherwise I might have had to tramp here every single day, to check what there was to see portside. And then I would have taken even MORE pictures …

Zurück auf unserem Balkon habe ich dann auch Steuerbord noch einmal den Ausblick genossen.

Back on our balcony I also enjoyed the starboard view once more.

Denn dann ging es auch schon zum letzten Mal zum Abendessen an Bord, im Restaurant „Weite Welt“.

Because then it was time already for the last time we ate supper on board, in the restaurant “Weite Welt”.

Bei der heutigen Abendveranstaltung “Secret Garden Momens“ sind wir nur vorbeigelaufen.

At today’s evening entertainment „Secret Garden Moments” we only walked past.

Denn beim Packen hatte ich noch letzte Münzen für die „Spielhalle“ gefunden. Also durfte ich  noch einmal an den Flipper.

Because when packing, I had found our last few coins for the “arcade”. So I got to have a last go on the pin-ball machine.

Ja, wer durfte denn da ihren Namen eingeben?

Oh, who got to enter her name here?

So, heute sind wir wieder den ganzen Tag auf dem Wasser unterwegs. Und ich bin natürlich morgens auf dem Balkon. Da habe ich heute ausführlich einen Maskentölpel beobachtet. Ach ja, fliegen müsste man können!

Okay, today once again we will spend all day on the water. And of course I am on the balcony in the early morning. And today I extensively watched a masked booby. Oh well, I wish I could fly!

Bis zu 70km/h schnell können diese Tölpel fliegen! Und gute Taucher sind sie auch. Fast senkrecht stößt er ins Wasser … und dann wartet man und auf einmal taucht er ein Stück weiter wieder auf.

These boobies can fly with a speed of up to 70km/h! And they are also great divers. Almost vertically it thrusts into the water … and then you wait and all of a sudden it pops up again a bit further on.

Weiter bei der Futtersuche …

Off to the next search for food …

So, mittlerweile ist Torben auch aufgestanden 😊 Jetzt gehts zum Sport!

Fast eine Stunde sind wir geradelt.

We cycled for almost an hour.

Danach haben wir auch brav die Treppen und nicht den Lift genommen.

Nach dem Duschen hat Torben von unserem Balkon aus dann ein seltsames Wesen entdeckt … ist aber kein Vogel, glaube ich.

After our shower, Torben discovered a strange creature from our balcony … but I don’t think it is a bird.

Ach! Miri ist das! … Was machen die zwei denn da???

Oh! It is Miri! … What is it the two of them are doing???

Hm, die Sache mit dem Finger scheint ansteckend zu sein!

Well, this thing with the finger seems to be catching!

Da bring ich mich doch in luftige Höhen in Sicherheit …

Ja, mir hat das Klettern beim letzten Mal so viel Spaß gemacht, das muss noch einmal sein.

Yes, I did so enjoy the climbing here last time, I just have to do it once more.

Ich habe alle Stationen mindestens einmal gemacht … dann war ich aber auch hinüber.

I did all sections at least once … but then I was really worn out.

Später war ich dann aber wieder fit …

But then later on I was fit again …

Ja, und dann kam Miri und wir sind zusammen zum Abendessen: Wir drei wollten mal den Japaner ausprobieren. – Tja, hier lacht der Torben noch …

Yes, and then Miri came and together we went to have supper: The three of us wanted to try out the Japanese restaurant for a change. – Well, here Torben is still laughing …

Ich will Euch nicht damit langweilen, was da alles nicht so ganz in Ordnung war. Sagen wir nur: da ist noch eine Menge Luft nach oben!

I do not want to bore you with all the things that were not quite up to standard. Let us just say: there is still much room for improvement!

Auch auf die Gefahr hin, dass ich Euch allmählich nerve … aber das ist eben jeden Morgen mein Tagesbeginn: Vom Balkon aus den Himmel bewundern …

At the risk of getting on your nerves with this by now … but I cannot help it, this is my morning ritual: Admiring the sky from my spot on the balcony …

… und den Mond begrüßen. Und natürlich auch immer schauen, ob es Vögel oder Fische zu sehen gibt.

Am 19. hatten wir eine Notiz an unserer Tür gehabt: Der gebuchte Ausflug für Bonaire wurde von vormittags auf nachmittags verlegt. – Tja, das wird nichts, wir haben nachmittags auch schon was vor! Naja, und heute morgens um acht kam die übliche Durchsage des Kapitäns, mit einer guten Nachricht für den Tag: wir dürfen auf eigene Faust auf die Insel. Also sind Torben und ich los und haben dann die Truppen gesehen, die auf die gebuchten Ausflüge sind:

On the 19th we had had a note at our door: The trip we had booked for Bonaire for the morning had been postponed to the afternoon. – Well, that won’t work, because for the afternoon we already have something else planned! Oh well, and then this morning at eight, there was the usual morning address by the captain, with good news for the day: we are allowed to take individual trips on the island. So Torben and I got going and then saw the groups that went on the booked tours.

Mag ja sein, dass wir die hier kennen …

Might even be that we know those here …

Wir haben brav gewunken … andere haben gesungen.

We nicely waved … others sang.

Torben und ich sind dann ein bisschen in der Nähe des Hafens herumgelaufen.

Torben and I then walked around a bit in the proximity of the harbour.

Und wir haben einfach mal geschaut, was es da so zu sehen gibt …

And we simply took a look at what there was to see …

… oder auch sechs, …

… Vielblütler gabs auch 😊

… und natürlich etwas Kunst!

Dann haben wir uns auch ein paar Gebäude angesehen – von außen. Da gab es eine Menge in diesem hellen Gelb. Kirchen, Monumente, ein Fort … Hier seht Ihr zum Beispiel das Regierungsgebäude, das 1837 gebaut wurde, als Unterkunft und Büro des Kommandanten. (Davor lebte er im Fort.)

Then we also looked at a few buildings – from the outside. There were quite a few in this bright yellow colour. Churches, monuments, a fort … Here for example you see the government building, which had been erected 1837, as the commander’s home and office. (Before that, he lived in the fort.)

Nein, hier ist uns kein falsches Bild reingerutscht … und wir sind auch in keiner Kirche.

No, it is not as if the wrong picture slipped in here … and we are also not in a church.

Ein Stück weiter haben wir die nächste Malerei entdeckt … die gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf den Nachmittagsausflug!

A bit further on we discovered the next painting … that one gives you a first taste of our afternoon excursion!

Jetzt mal ein Blick die Hauptstraße entlang. Schön bunt ist es hier!

Now a look down the main street. It is quite colourful here!

Torben und ich haben dann im Restaurant „El Mundo“ etwas gegessen – das hört sich so unspektakulär an, aber es war tatsächlich das einzige Mal, dass wir eine Mahlzeit auf einer der Inseln zu uns genommen haben!

Torben and I then had something to eat in the restaurant “El Mundo” – which sounds so very unspectacular, but it was indeed the only time that we had a meal on one of the islands!

Nach ein bisschen Pause an Bord (ja, wir haben auch ein Nickerchen gehalten) war es schon Zeit für den Nachmittags-Ausflug. Den hatte Dietmar für uns alle gebucht … und wie man sieht, freut er sich schon riesig.

After a bit of a break on board of the ship (yes, we also had a short nap) it was already time for our afternoon excursion. That one Dietmar had booked for the whole group … and as you can see, he is very much looking forward to it.

Nach ein bisschen Warten kam unser Guide Trevor. Augenzwinkernd meinte er, dass die Tour mit 15:30 sehr spät angesetzt sei, aber das ist das Problem von AIDA … die werden nicht abfahren bevor wir nicht wieder da sind. 😊

After a bit of waiting our guide Trevor arrived. With a twinkle in his eye he told us that the tour is planned for a rather late time, with 3:30 pm, but that is AIDA’s problem … they will not leave before we are back on board. 😊

Erst mussten wir ein Stückchen fahren. Die Landschaft wirkte immer wüstenartiger, mit vielen Kakteen.

First we had to drive for a bit. The landscape seemed more and more desert-like, with lots of cacti.

Da alles so karg ist, dürfen die Früchte der Kakteen (die wohl sehr lecker schmecken), nicht gepflückt werden – sie gehören alleine den Vögeln, die sonst wenig anderes Futter finden würden.

Since all is so arid, it is forbidden to pick the fruit of the cacti (and it seems they taste really well) – those are all for the birds who otherwise would find very little to feed on.

Und interessanterweise werden die Kakteen als Zäune genutzt!

And an interesting fact: the cacti are used as fences!

Nach ungefähr 15 Minuten kamen wir dann an einem Gebiet vorbei, das den Flamingos vorbehalten ist. Wie Trevor uns erzählte (er war ein toller Guide, er hat uns soviel gezeigt und erzählt – und alles immer in dieser Grundstimmung positiver Entspannung), darf hier niemand ins Wasser, kein Fischer, keine Tourboote, niemand.

After about 15 minutes we then passed an area that belongs exclusively to the flamingos. As Trevor explained (he was a great guide, told and showed us so much – and all of that in this constant atmosphere of positive relaxation), nobody is allowed into the water here, no fishermen, no tour boats, nobody.

Aber das heißt natürlich nicht, dass nur weil wir die Flamingos nicht stören sollen, sie nicht uns „stören“ dürfen 😊

But of course that does not mean that because we are not allowed to bother them, they may not „bother“ us 😊

Aus dem Auto haben wir ganz viele sehen können, Trevor ist auch extra nicht so schnell gefahren …

Out of the moving car we could see many of them. Trevor made sure that he did not drive too fast …

Überhaupt wird Naturschutz auf Bonaire sehr wichtig genommen: Auf der vorgelagerten Insel Klein Bonaire wurde zum Beispiel verhindert, dass ein Hotel gebaut wurde. Die Insel ist ein Eldorado für Taucher, aber auch ein Naturschutzgebiet.

In general, nature conservation has a significant weight on Bonaire: On the island just off the main one, Little Bonaire, fore example, they prevented that a hotel was built. The island is an Eldorado for divers, but also a nature reserve.

Nach ungefähr 20 Minuten oder so waren wir da und haben uns für die Bootsfahrt vorbereitet.

After about 20 minutes or so, we had reached our destination and then prepared ourselves for the boat ride.

Ganz nebenbei konnten wir jetzt Flamingos ganz in Ruhe beobachten und nicht aus dem fahrenden Auto heraus.

And on the side we now had the chance to observe flamingos at our leisure, and not out of a moving car.

Doch dann gings auch schon in unser Elektro-Motorboot. Das war klein und wacklig, wir acht plus Trevor hatten gerade mal so Platz. (Und erst hinterher ist mir aufgefallen, dass ich zwischen Flamingos und Mangroven ganz vergessen hatte, auch mal ein Foto von unserem Boot zu machen 😊)

But then it was already time to get into our electrically powered boat. It was small and not too stable, the eight of us plus Trevor barely fit in. (And only afterwards did I realize that between flamingos and mangroves I had totally forgotten to also take one little picture of our boat 😊)

Aber auf diese Weise kamen wir auch durch die eher engen Kanäle zwischen den Mangroven. – Eine tolle Fahrt! Trevor hat uns eine Menge erzählt, ansonsten war alles so herrlich ruhig (inklusive unser Boot), und wir haben einfach nur die tollen Aussichten genossen.

But this way we also managed to get through the rather narrow channels between the mangroves. – A great tour! Trevor told us lots, but for the rest everything was so wonderfully quiet (including our boat), and we simply enjoyed the gorgeous views.

Wie man sieht, haben wir überall hingeschaut …

As you can see, we looked everywhere …

Im Vorbeigleiten haben wir einen Grünreiher entdeckt – auch wenn er ganz blau aussieht.

In gliding past, we spotted a green heron – even if it looks rather blue.

Hier wird auch viel über die Mangroven geforscht. Die bunten Markierungen geben dann Auskunft über das Wachstum.

There is also a lot of research going on here. The coloured markings then provide information about growth.

Auch Federn – besonders als Kopfschmuck – wachsen hier ganz wunderbar!

Feathers – especially as a headdress – also grow here phenomenally!

Wir haben viel über die Mangroven hier gelernt … Die verschiedenen Arten, wie weiße, rote und schwarze Mangroven, oder dass hier immer Blüten  und neue Triebe sprießen, weil es keine wirklichen Jahreszeiten gibt, zum Beispiel.

We learned much about the mangroves here … The different species, like white, red and black mangroves, or that they are always blooming and growing, since here there are no real seasons, for example.

Und auch andere spannende Einzelheiten: Leider kein tolles Foto, aber zu interessant, um es nicht zu erwähnen: Eine Mangrovenqualle. Die liegt auf dem Rücken! In den Tentakeln leben kleine Algen, die die Qualle mit Nahrung versorgen.

And also other interesting tidbits: Unfortunately no great picture, but too interesting to not mention it: An upside-down jellyfish. It lies on its back! In its tentacles, algae live, which provide the jellyfish with nutrition.

Manchmal sind wir auf größeren Wasserflächen unterwegs, dann gleiten wir wieder in engere Rinnen und Tunnel.

Sometimes we travel on larger expanses of water, then again we glide along more narrow channels and tunnels.

Und in einem von denen haben wir dann eine Krabbe auf den Mangroven-Wurzeln gesehen.

And in one of those we then saw a crab on the roots of the mangroves.

An einer sehr offenen Stelle hat uns Trevor auf zwei Prachtfregattvögel hingewiesen. Auf die sind wir lange zugefahren und konnten sie schön beobachten. Das müssten zwei Weibchen gewesen sein, die Männchen haben eine rote Brust.

In a quite open area, Trevor pointed out two magnificent frigatebirds to us. We glided towards them for a long time and thus could watch them nicely. It must have been two females, the males have a red chest.

Eine Stunde lang hatten wir die Mangroven in aller Ruhe genießen können – doch auch die schönste Fahrt geht einmal zu Ende. Damit wir nicht zu enttäuscht sind, gibt es gleich wieder etwas zu sehen, oder jemanden:

For one hour we had the opportunity to peacefully enjoy the mangroves – but even the most wonderful tour must come to an end. To make sure we are not too disappointed, there is right away something to see, or somebody:

Und hier sieht das aus nach dem Schrei „Aaaah, da sind sie schon wieder!“ – Auf der Insel gibt es viele wilde Esel. (Im 17. Jahrhundert hatten die Spanier Esel als Arbeitstiere mitgebracht – ca. 400 wilde Esel gibt es aktuell noch auf der Insel.)

And here it looks like somebody is shouting “Aaargh, they are back already!” – On the island there are a lot of wild donkeys. (In the 17^th century, the Spanish brought donkeys along as working animals – currently there are still about 400 wild donkeys on the island.)

Aber dann müssen wir uns wirklich wieder auf den Rückweg machen … 17:15 ist es schon 😊 Und die AIDA will alle um 17:30 wieder an Bord haben! – Trevor hat sich aber nicht hetzen lassen. Hier hat er extra angehalten und das Fenster runtergelassen, damit ich noch ein paar letzte Fotos machen konnte.

Well, that was quite a great day. Wasn’t it, Dietmar?

Ja, schon irgendwie, hier ist ne Menge passiert … aber fangen wir ordentlich von vorne an: Guten Morgen! Ja, es ist noch ziemlich dunkel, obwohl es schon halb sieben ist. Wir fahren gerade auf Curaçao zu. Hier haben Torben und ich zwei Ausflüge gebucht. Vormittags die Hato-Höhle und ein Gang durch Willemstad, nachmittags zusammen mit den anderen ein Spaziergang durch Willemstad und dann noch Besuch des maritimen Museums.

Yes, somehow, a lot happened here … but let us start properly at the beginning: Good morning! Yes, it is still quite dark, even though it is six thirty already. At the moment we are coming towards Curaçao. Torben and I have booked two excursions for today. In the morning the Hato cave and a walk through Willemstad, and in the afternoon together with the others a stroll through Willemstad and then also a visit of the Maritime Museum.

Ja, das klingt nach doppelt gemoppelt, aber wir lieben Höhlen. Und wenn da ein erster Blick auf die Stadt dabei ist, können wir uns vormittags etwas orientieren und wissen nachmittags schon, wo wir genauer hinsehen wollen. Denn Willemstad muss sehr sehenswert sein!

Yes, that does sound like doing things twice over, but we love caves. And if that trip includes a first look at the town, then we can get our bearings in the morning and in the afternoon we already know where we want to take a closer look. Because it sounds like Willemstad is well worth looking at!

Für 8:45 war der Start geplant. Wir waren rechtzeitig am Busbahnhof am Hafen, haben uns für die Tour registriert und sind dann nach einer Desinfektion der Hände in den Bus. Ein älterer Herr wollte das nicht mitmachen. Er hat sich furchtbar aufgeregt, dass niemand etwas auf seine Hände sprühen darf und ist entrüstet abgezogen. (wir müssen hier dauernd die Hände desinfizieren, auch vor jedem Essen an Bord … hungert er die ganze Zeit???) Naja, wir sind dann losgefahren und gleich wieder stehengeblieben. Unser Guide Antonio hat uns schon erste Dinge über die Insel erzählt, aber irgendwann wurde klar – hier geht nichts vom Fleck! Vor uns stand noch ein Bus, und davor war die Ausfahrt von streikenden Leuten blockiert.

The start was planned for 8:45. We were well in time at the bus station at the harbour, registered for the tour and after the usual disinfection of our hands we got on the bus. An elderly gentleman did not want to accept the procedure. He got all upset, that nobody would spray anything on his hands, and then indignantly marched off. (we constantly have to disinfect our hands, also before every meal on board … does he starve all the time???) Oh well, the bus then started moving and stopped again right away. Our guide already told us the first few things about the island, but then after a while we realized – nothing is moving here! In front of us there was another bus, and in front of that, the exit was blocked by people on strike!

Wir haben dann zugesehen, wie nichts vom Fleck ging. Dann kam der Kapitän mit Entourage …

We then watched how nothing progressed. Then the captain came with his entourage …

… und wir haben beobachtet, wie da draußen heftig diskutiert wurde.

Irgendwann kam dann der Kapitän in unseren Bus, meinte: das wäre für ihn auch ein erstes Mal, dass er eine Ansage im Tourbus macht. Hm. Auf jeden Fall haben örtliche Touranbieter und Taxifahrer gestreikt, weil AIDA (anders als andere Anbieter) keine freien Landgänge erlaubt hat und sie somit null Geschäft machen konnten. Da haben wir dann erfahren, dass die morgendlichen Ansagen, die immer erzählen, dass in Absprache mit den örtlichen Behörden keine individuellen Ausflüge erlaubt sind, sehr missverständlich formuliert waren. Es war eine reine AIDA Entscheidung, dass wir nicht auf eigene Faust auf die Inseln durften. Kein Wunder, dass die Geschäftsleute auf Curaçao genervt waren!

Then finally the captain came into our bus, said: that for him it was also a first time, to make a speech in a tour bus. Hm. Anyhow, local tour guides and taxi drivers were on strike, because AIDA (different from other providers) did not allow any individual excursions and thus they could not make a sale. So there we found out that the usual morning address, telling us that after consultation with the local authorities, not individual trips were allowed, were worded in a way that could nicely be misunderstood. It was a clear AIDA decision that we are not allowed to explore the islands on our own. No wonder that the business people on Curaçao were annoyed!

Wir durften dann irgendwann aus dem Bus aussteigen und ein bisschen herumlaufen, während die AIDA Leute und welche von der Hafen-Sicherheitsbehörden weiter geredet haben. Wir haben uns erst mal keine Sorgen gemacht (siehe Text auf dem Bus 😊 ) …

Then after a while we were allowed to leave the bus and walk around a bit, while the AIDA people and some from the harbour security kept talking. For now we were not worried (see the text on the bus 😊)…

… haben uns angehört, was die Streikenden erzählt haben. Die Leute wollten einfach nur, dass AIDA ihnen die Chance gibt, Geld zu verdienen.

… and listened to what the people on strike had to tell. They all just wanted that AIDA gave them a chance to earn some money.

Dann hab ich angefangen, auf Vogeljagd zu gehen. Irgendwo schwirrt ja immer etwas herum, was man fotografieren kann.

Then I started to hunt down birds. After all, there is always something around somewhere to take photos of.

Doch dann hat der General Manager entschieden, dass wir erst mal zurück aufs Schiff gehen dürfen, wenn wir wollen, weil sich die ganze Sache wohl doch noch hinziehen würde. Sobald es weitergehen könne, würde es eine Durchsage geben. Und da wir einen gewissen Druck auf der Blase verspürt haben, sind wir an Bord.

But then the General Manager decided that we could go back to the ship for now, if we want to, because this whole matter seemed to take longer after all. And as soon as it would be resolved, we would get an announcement on board. And since we felt some pressure on the bladder, we went back to the ship.

Da wollten wir dann noch schnell einen Happen frühstücken, aber kaum waren wir in einem der Restaurants, kam die Durchsage. Wir sind schnellstens sofort wieder zurück. Und da standen die Streikenden immer noch herum, aber die Busse waren weg!

There we thought, we could go for a quick bite of breakfast, but no sooner were we in one of the restaurants, when the announcement came. Right away we rushed back. And there the people on strike were still around, but the busses were gone!

Wir haben dann mit einer Dame von AIDA diskutiert, die nichts wusste, dann sind wir zu den Herren Kapitän und General Manager, die auch noch rumstanden. Die waren sich keiner Schuld bewusst, für den Streik könnten sie nichts. Ja, das hatten wir auch nie gesagt! Aber uns zum Schiff schicken und dann den Bus abfahren lassen … Ja, dann sollten wir den Ausflug halt nachmittags machen! Da hatten wir aber ja schon den Ausflug mit der Familie vor. Tja, was tun?

We then disputed with a lady from the AIDA, who did not know a thing, then we went over to the gentlemen Captain and General Manager, who were also still standing there. They did not think they had done anything wrong, the strike is not their fault! Yes, and we never said that! But to send us to the ship and then to let the bus leave … Hey, then we should just take the tour in the afternoon! But for that time we already had the trip with the family planned. Well, and now?

Zurück an Bord haben wir hin und her überlegt. 12:30 könnten wir die Höhlen-Tour machen, aber für 14:15 haben wir ja die andere Tour geplant. Wir haben uns dann bei AIDA genauere Infos geholt: der Gang durch die Stadt ist bei beiden Touren exakt derselbe. Und dann kam auch noch die Durchsage, dass wir auf einmal doch auch individuell Ausflüge machen dürfen. Also haben wir entschieden, wir fahren um halb eins zur Höhle!

Back on board we thought back and forth. 12:30 we could do the caves tour, but for 2:15 we had planned the other trip. We then got some detailed information at the AIDA reception: the walk through town is the exact same in both tours. And then to top it of, there was an announcement that now all of a sudden we were allowed to take individual trips after all. So we decided, we will go to the cave at twelve thirty!

Aus dem Bus kriegen wir erste Blicke auf Willemstad und dann auch einen Eindruck von der Insel.

From the bus we got the first glimpses of Willemstad and also an impression of the island.

Und dann waren wir auch schon bei der Hato Höhle. Davor gab es Kakteen zu sehen und Torben hat Kolibris entdeckt!

And then we had already reached the Hato cave. In front of it, there were cacti to be seen, and Torben discovered hummingbirds!

Die Höhle selber war ganz anders als die, die wir uns in der Dominikanischen Republik angesehen hatten. Hier war das weniger eine große Halle mit kleineren Ausläufern sondern das Gegenteil. Längere Gänge und dann hat sich immer mal ein größerer Raum geöffnet. Gleich am Anfang sind wir durch eine Halle, in der eine Menge Fledermäuse unterwegs waren, toll! Aber auch hier war Fotografierverbot, außer in ein paar ausgewählten Räumen, und unser Guide hat sehr genau aufgepasst … Also leider keine Fledermäuse für Euch.

The cave itself was totally different from the one we had seen in the Dominican Republic. Here it was less one large hall with small extensions, but rather the exact opposite. Longer corridors and then here and there a larger space opened up. Right at the start we went through one hall where a lot of bats were flying around, great! But here as well, taking pictures was not allowed, except in a few selected spots, and our guide paid close attention … So unfortunately no bats for you.

Aber auch hier waren die Steinformationen sehr interessant zu sehen.

But here as well the rocky formations were very interesting to look at.

240m tief geht das Höhlensystem in den Berg. Hier haben sich wohl auch immer wieder geflohene Sklaven versteckt. An einer Stelle gibt es oben an der Decke ein „Fenster“, durch das Sonnenlicht in die Höhle fällt. Das sorgt dafür, dass hier eine Menge grüne Algen gedeihen.

This cave system goes 240m into the mountain. Escaped slaves had also found a hiding spot here time and again. At one spot there is a “window” in the ceiling, through which the sunlight falls into the cave. That is the reason why a lot of green algae grows here.

Übrigens: anders als bei vielen anderen Höhlen, in denen es sehr kühl wird, ist diese hier relativ hoch im Berg und daher recht warm. Für die Hato Höhle muss man sich keine zusätzliche Kleidung einpacken …

By the way: different from many other caves in which it gets very cold, this one is very high up in the mountain and thus quite warm. For the Hato Cave you do not have to bring any additional clothing …

Draußen haben wir dann einen Kaktus auf seinem kleinen Balkon entdeckt …

Outside we then discovered a cactus on its own little balcony …

Dann ging es wieder in den Bus und wir sind zurück nach Willemstad gefahren. Im Bus haben wir schon unsere Ausrüstung gekriegt, damit wir die Dame, die uns dann durch die Stadt führen wird, auch gut hören.

Then we got back onto the bus and drove back to Willemstad. In the bus we already got our equipment so that we can later hear very well, when the lady who will lead us through the town speaks.

Von einer Brücke hat man schon einen schönen Blick auf die Stadt und die berühmte Königin-Emma-Brücke.

From a bridge you already get a nice look at the town and the famous Queen Emma Bridge.

Hier seht Ihr eine andere berühmte Sehenswürdigkeit, der „schwimmende Markt“. Das funktioniert normalerweise so, dass die Boote hier links festmachen und dann von den Tischen auf der Straße Obst und Fisch verkaufen. Aber uns wurde gesagt, der Markt ist dieser Tage nur vormittags offen.

Here you can see another very famous sight, the “swimming market”. Usually that works like this: the boats make fast here on the left and then people sell fruit and fish from the tables on the street. But we were told, these days the market is only open in the mornings.

Wir gehen weiter, vorbei an ein paar Straßenmusikanten …

Es ging durch eine Menge schmale Gassen, aber alles war so schön bunt und freundlich. Oft gab es Wandmalereien.

We wandered along many narrow alleys, but all was so colourful and friendly. Often we saw wall paintings.

Schon zu Beginn unserer Rundgangs haben wir diese Statue von Königin Wilhelmina zu ihrem 50. Geburtstag gesehen …

Right at the start of our walk we had seen this statue of Queen Wilhelmina for her 50th birthday …

… und jetzt sind wir das erste Mal ganz nah an der berühmten Brücke, die der Königin Emma gewidmet ist.

… and now we are for the first time very close to the famous bridge that is dedicated to Queen Emma.

Übrigens: die Brücke, von der aus ich vorhin diese hier fotografiert habe, das ist die Königin-Juliana-Brücke. Eine Menge gekrönter Damen hier …

By the way: the bridge from which I earlier took a picture of the one here, that is the Queen Juliana Bridge. A lot of crowned ladies here …

Aber jetzt sehen wir uns auch mal ein paar Gebäude an, zumindest von außen: Das Fort Amsterdam, und hier zu sehen die protestantische Kirche. Die hat zwei Datumsangaben: Unten an der Wand die 1769, da wurde diese Kirche gebaut, und oben am Türmchen die 1903, als das restauriert wurde. Denn das war ursprünglich aus Holz und hat dann einem Sturm nicht stand gehalten.

But now we also look at a few buildings, at least from the outside: The Fort Amsterdam, and here you see the protestant church. It carries two dates: At the bottom on the wall the 1769, which is when the church was built, and at the top on the little tower the 1903, when the turret was restored. Because the original one had been made out of wood and then did not withstand a storm.

Und links in der  – ziemlich dicken –  Wand sieht man noch eine Kanonenkugel, die die Briten auf die Holländer geschossen hatten. Das war 1804.

And on the left in the – quite thick – wall you can see a cannon ball, which the British had shot at the Dutch. That was in 1804.

Hier ein Denkmal, mit dem sich die Niederlande für die Unterstützung im zweiten Weltkrieg bedankten. Aruba und Curaçao wurden von den Deutschen angegriffen, weil sie Flugzeuge und Panzer mit Treibstoff versorgten.

Here a memorial with which the Netherlands said thank you for the support during World War II. Aruba and Curaçao had been attacked by the Germans, because they supplied planes and tanks with fuel.

Wie der Rundgang aus war, sind wir dann zum Maritimen Museum, auf der Suche nach Renate, Miri und Dietmar. Und da haben wir sie auch gefunden. Ihre Truppe hat erst das Museum besucht und wird jetzt den Rundgang durch die Stadt machen. Also haben Torben und ich uns das Museum ganz schnell ein bisschen angesehen … denn eigentlich sollte es in zehn Minuten schließen. Aber: Sie haben noch auf eine Gruppe von der AIDA gewartet, deswegen durften wir überhaupt noch rein 😊

After the round trip was finished, we walked to the Maritime Museum, searching for Renate, Miri and Dietmar. And we did find them there. Their group had started with the visit to the museum and will now do the tour through the town. So Torben and I took a bit of a look around in the museum, real quickly … because really, it was supposed to close in ten minutes. But: They were waiting for another group from the AIDA, that is why we were still allowed in.

Drinnen gab es eine Menge zu sehen … Die Fahrten des Columbus zum Beispiel. Der wollte ja bekanntlich von Europa aus nach Westen direkt nach Indien segeln. Ihm war klar, dass das eine sehr weiter Fahrt würde, und um seine Mannschaft nicht zu entmutigen, nahm er jeden Tag zwei Messungen vor, wie weit man wohl gekommen sei: Eine realistische für sich selber, und eine erfundene für die Crew!

Inside there was lots to see … The voyages of Columbus for example. As you know he meant to sail from Europe directly West to India. He was aware that that would be a very long journey, and to not discourage his men, he made two daily calculations, how far they had come: One realistic one for himself, and a fictitious one for the crew!

Die Bandbreite hier im Museum war erstaunlich: da gab es eine Ausstellung über die moderne Küstenwache genauso wie vieles über die Geschichte von Willemstad. Da waren alte Schiffsmodelle zu sehen und Geschichten über Piraten zu lesen. Und die berühmte Brücke der Stadt gibt es als Modell:

The spectrum here in the museum was amazing: there was an exhibition about the modern coast guard as well as much about the history of Willemstad. There were models of old ships to see and stories about pirates to read. And the famous bridge of the city can be seen as a model:

Sehr spannend fand ich die Geschichte der Post-Schifffahrt. 1825 ging es los, auf Betreiben von König Wilhelm I. Alle zwei Monate segelte da ein Schiff los. Und 1827-1829 wurde dann ein Raddampfer genutzt. Das war etwas riskant, denn die Curaçao war ein recht kleines Schiff, und die Dampfschifffahrt steckte noch in den Kinderschuhen. Aber, sie war das erste Dampfschiff, dass den Atlantik überquerte! In nur 28 Tagen, die Segler brauchten 40 …

Very interesting I thought the history of the postal shipping. 1825 it started, at the instigation of King William I. Every two months a ship set sail. And 1827-1829 then they used a paddle steamer. That was a touch risky, because the Curaçao was a rather small ship, and the steam navigation was still in its infancy. But, she was the first steamship that crossed the Atlantic! In only 28 days, the sailing ships took 40 days to cross …

Ein weniger schönes Thema: Die Sklaverei. Die Gefangenen wurden oft im Zwischendeck untergebracht, wo sonst die Crew lebte. Es gab einen Arzt an Bord, der sich um die Sklaven kümmern sollte, denn jeder tote Sklave war ein Verlust für die Mannschaft, die an diesem grausigen Geschäft verdiente. 85% der Sklaven erreichten die Insel, die Todesrate war unter der Mannschaft oft höher als bei den Sklaven. (kein Mitleid, sorry!)

A rather not so pretty topic: Slavery. The captives were often put on the between deck, where normally the crew lived. There was a physician on board, who was to take care of the slaves, because every dead slave was a loss for the entire crew who all shared in this gruesome profit. 85% of the slaves reached the island, the death rate was often higher among the crew than among the captives. (no pity, sorry!)

Wir werden jetzt aber wieder rausgehen, die anderen treffen und uns diese berühmte Brücke endlich mal genauer ansehen und einmal überqueren. Ich will kurz rüber zum Schiff, während Torben dann die Familie suchen wird.

But we will now leave again, meet the others and then finally take a closer look at this famous bridge and cross it. I want to go back to the ship for a bit, while Torben will search for the family.

Wie wir da hin sind, fällt mir noch auf, dass das blaue Fähnchen – wie beim Modell – oben ist … Tja, Torben und ich gehen gerade so über die Brücke, da klingelt irgendein Alarm und dann bewegt sich das Teil! Später haben wir das Schild gesehen: Rote Flagge: Brücke öffnet sich für 10 Minuten, kein Fährdienst. Blaue Flagge: Brücke öffnet sich für 45 Minuten und die Fähre übernimmt. (Und ich hatte Sorge, ob wir die Brücke auch in Aktion erleben werden … )

And as we go to the bridge, I do notice that this little blue flag – like on the model – is up … Well, Torben and I are just nicely walking across the bridge, when some sort of alarm sounds and then the bridge starts moving! Later we saw the sign: Red flag: bridge will open for 10 minutes, no ferry service. Blue flag: bridge will open for 45 minutes, and the ferry service takes over. (And I had been worried that we might not get to see the bridge in action …)

… und hier sieht man das „Scharnier“. Weltweit gibt es nur diese eine Brücke, die so „aufklappt“. (Torben war ja vorgegangen, da konnte man noch „normal“ von der Brücke steigen. Wie ich nach all dem Fotografieren endlich am Ende ankomme, gings da ein ganzes Stück runter. Naja, bin ich halt auf die Knie und losgeklettert … hinterher haben wir gesehen, es gibt seitlich ein Türchen, durch das man ohne Klettern durch könnte 😊)

… and here you see the “hinge”. In all the world there exists just this one bridge which “swings open” like this. (Torben had gone ahead, when you could still step off the bridge “normally”. But when I, finally finished with taking lots of pictures, finally reached the end of the bridge, there was quite a drop. Well, so I got down on my knees and started climbing down … later we did see that there is a nice little gate on the side, where you can exit without climbing 😊)

Die Brücke schwimmt auf Pontons. Hier ist sie jetzt fast ganz auf der Seite. Übrigens: Das Original wurde 1888 von Leonard Burlington Smith gebaut. Ursprünglich musste man zahlen, um sie überqueren zu dürfen, es sei denn, man hatte keine Schuhe, dann durfte man umsonst rüber.

Ich bin dann nachher mit der Fähre zurück übers Wasser. Und während wir unterwegs waren, hat sich die Brücke dann schon wieder in Bewegung gesetzt.

I then later took the ferry back across the water. And while we were on the go, the bridge already started moving again.

… und haben uns das Farbenspiel bei Nacht angesehen. (Normalerweise ist Auslaufen immer so um sechs herum, aber hier müssen wir erst 21:30 wieder an Bord sein – sicher, damit jeder das hier genießen kann.)

Curaçao hat uns sehr gut gefallen, das wollen wir uns irgendwann noch ausführlicher ansehen!

Und wie das Tageslicht dann so allmählich stärker wird, kommen kleine Stückchen Land in den Blick. Hier zum Beispiel: werden da Strohhalme gezüchtet?

And then as the daylight starts creeping in, little pieces of land become visible. Here for example: are they cultivating drinking straws there?

Wir hatten vormittags gleich wieder einen Ausflug gebucht. Torben und ich waren etwas zu früh dran, aber für Unterhaltung war gesorgt.

For the morning we had once again booked an excursion. Torben and I were a bit early, but entertainment was provided.

Ja, langweilig wird uns einfach nicht, wenn es nichts zu hören gibt, dann etwas zu sehen 😊 Denn über unseren Köpfen waren hier und da Pelikane unterwegs.

Yes, we think, it never gets boring. When there is nothing to hear, then there’s something to see 😊 Because above our heads, pelicans flew every once in a while.

Schon alleine die Busse hier an der Haltestelle sind sehenswert. Eine Menge sehr bunt bemalte Fahrzeuge waren da unterwegs.

Even just the busses here at the station were worth a look. A lot of very brightly painted vehicles were on the roads.

Wir haben aber keinen Bus gebraucht. Als unsere Gruppe komplett war, sind wir nur ein Stück den Pier entlang gelaufen, und haben eine kleine Fähre bestiegen. Dieser „rosa Kuchen“ gegenüber ist übrigens eine Mall. Die Preise auf Aruba seien überdurchschnittlich hoch, wurde uns gesagt, und dass das auf das freigebige Geldausgeben der US-Amerikaner zurückzuführen sei.

But we did not need a bus. When our small group was assembled, we only walked down the pier for a bit and got onto a little shuttle boat. This “pink cake” opposite, by the way, is a shopping mall. We were told that the prices on Aruba are exceptionally high, and that this is due to the US Americans who spend their money so freely here.

Wir haben eine Sicherheitseinweisung gekriegt. Und die Sauerstoffmasken sahen schon beeindruckend / beängstigend aus …

Um uns herum gab es auch eine Menge zu sehen. Schöne Anblicke, wie Mangroven rechts von uns, aber auch eine Müllhalde zu unserer Linken. (Und die konnte man auch riechen …)

All around us there was also lots to see. Pretty views like the mangroves to our right, but also a garbage dump to our left. (And you could definitely also smell that …)

Und dann haben wir sie erreicht: Die Atlantis VI. Sie wurde 1990 in Vancouver gebaut. Und sie wiegt 80 Tonnen.

And then we reached her: The Atlantis VI. She was built in Vancouver in 1990. And she weighs 80 tons.

Wir sind aus unserer Fähre rüber auf das kleine U-Boot geklettert und dann gings nach unten.

We climbed from our ferry across onto the little submarine, and then we went down.

Innen drin gibt es zwei Reihen mit Sitzmulden. Da haben wir uns alle hingesetzt und jeder hatte dann ein Bullauge vor sich zum Blick ins Meer.

Inside there are two rows with depressions for seating. There we all found our spot and then each had a porthole in front for the look into the ocean.

Alwen, der uns durch unsere Unterwasserreise geführt hat, hat dann die Luke geschlossen und die Treppe hochgeklappt. Noch kann man auf der Anzeige sehen: 0 Fuß.

Alwen, who guided us during our under water travels, then closed the hatch and folded up the ladder. So far you can see on the display: 0 feet.

Hier hat Kapitän Oscar uns jetzt schon auf 29 Fuß (ca. 9 Meter) gebracht: unser erster Stopp am Riff. Wir sind immer überall erst mit der einen Seite entlang gefahren, dann mit der anderen, damit alle Gäste alles zu sehen kriegen.

Here then captain Oscar already brought us down to 29 feet (about 9 meters): our first stop at the reef. We always went past everything once with the one side, then the other one, so that all guests could see everything.

Dann sind wir tiefer, auf 50 Fuß (15m). Natürlich wurde es immer dunkler, sowohl wir als auch die Fische haben sich bewegt, und durchs Wasser fotografieren hilft auch nicht. Aber so ein bisschen könnt Ihr vielleicht erkennen, was wir alles gesehen haben. Da waren Zebrafische, Flötenfische, …

Then we went deeper, to 50 feet (15m). Of course it got progressively darker, and both we and the fish were in motion, and taking photos through water is also not helpful. But maybe you can discern a bit what we have seen. There were zebra fish, trumpetfish, …

Dann haben wir das erste Wrack erreicht: Die Morning Star. Die wurde – wie die anderen beiden auch, die wir gesehen haben – absichtlich als künstliches Riff versenkt. Da waren wir auf ca. 90 Fuß (27m).

Then we reached the first sunken ship: The Morning Star. She was – as the other two that we saw later on – sunk on purpose to act as an artificial reef. That was at a depth of about 90 feet (27m).

Und da haben wir auch kurz einen Barrakuda gesehen. Und im Vordergrund violette Ofenrohrschwämme.

And we even glimpsed a barracuda there. And in the foreground purple tube sponges.

Er hier wollte dann wohl mal den Spieß umdrehen und uns genauer ansehen.

Looks like this one wanted to turn the tables and take a closer look at us.

Dann kam das zweite Wrack, die Midushi II. Midushi bedeutet Schatz, hat Alwen uns gesagt. Da hatten wir dann die 100 Fuß erreicht (30m).

Then we came to the second wreck, the Midushi II: Midushi means sweetheart, Alwen told us. There we had reached a depth of 100 feet (30m).

Die mageren Reste der Midushi I haben wir auch gesehen, doch da war wirklich nicht mehr viel übrig. Oscar ist mit uns dann auf den Meeresboden auf 137 Fuß (fast 42m) gegangen, Alwen meinte, das wäre die „Aruba Mondlandung“.

We also saw the meager remains of the Midushi I, but there nothing much was left of the sunken ship, really. Oscar then went with us down to the ocean bottom at 137 feet (almost 42m), and Alwen told us, that was the “Aruba moon landing”.

Wir haben auch zwei Meeresschildkröten und einen kleinen Rochen gesehen – doch leider kann ich davon keine brauchbaren Fotos liefern. Aber die beiden hier sind doch auch nett, egal, wie ernst sie schauen, oder?

We also spotted two sea turtles, and a small ray – but unfortunately I cannot provide any decent photos of those. But don’t you think these two are also nice to look at? No matter how serious their demeanour?

Ja, wir sind dann langsam wieder aufgetaucht …

Yes, we then slowly started our ascent …

… und dann war dieser Ausflug unter Wasser auch schon vorbei. 50 Minuten waren wir unter Wasser.

Dann sind wir zurück zum Schiff gefahren. Der hier konnte uns nicht wirklich beeindrucken – hey, wir waren am Maho Beach auf St. Maarten!

Then we got our ride back to the ship. This guy here could not really impress us – hey, we have been to Maho Beach on St. Maarten!

Aber wir haben da noch einen schicken Flieger …

Zurück an Bord waren wir hungrig. Torben und ich sind wieder ins Fuego, und ich hab dieses Mal die Eismaschine ausprobiert.

When we got back on board we were hungry. Torben and I went to the Fuego again, and this time I tried out the ice cream dispenser.

Zweimal … also musste Torben gezwungenermaßen auch ein Eis essen!

Twice … so Torben was forced to also have an ice cream!

Ja, und danach haben wir den Nachmittag sehr ruhig in unserer Kabine verbracht. Irgendwann muss man die neuen Eindrücke ja auch verarbeiten, die ganzen Informationen (zumindest die, die man sich gemerkt hat) aufschreiben, die Fotos herunterladen … und vielleicht auch ein Nickerchen machen 😊 (Aber ich habe einen Blog-Eintrag fertig gekriegt, versprochen!)

Yes, and then we spent the afternoon very quietly in our cabin. Ja, und dann war es Zeit zum Steak House zu gehen, heute feiern wir ja die goldene Hochzeit (nach). Gerne hätten wir draußen gesessen, aber da war kein Tisch für fünf ☹

Yes, and then it was already time to go to the Steak House, because toady we will (finally) celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary. We would have liked to sit outside, but there was no table for five ☹

Also haben wir drinnen ein nettes Tischchen gefunden ….

… und auch einen Kellner, der uns mit Begeisterung fotografiert hat. Danke, Nil! – Nicht seine Schuld, dass das Licht zu dem Zeitpunkt an der „Fotoecke“ sehr grell war.

Hier sieht man dann auch ganz deutlich, wie Renate von Dietmars Strahlen geblendet wird, da konnte die Sonne nun echt nichts dafür!

Später waren die Lichtverhältnisse dann besser, aber da waren wir mit unseren Steaks beschäftigt. Prioritäten und so!

Wir drei, also Torben, Miri und ich, haben uns zu diesem besonderen Tag ja eine Menge Gedanken gemacht. Zum Beispiel seht Ihr hier: Miri mit golden schimmernden Perlchen am Ausschnitt, Torben trägt seine goldene Krawatte und ich die goldene Hose.

The three of us, meaning Torben, Miri and me, of course put a lot of thought into our preparations for this special day. You can, for example, see here: Miri with beads that have a golden shine along the neckline, Torben is wearing his golden tie, and I have my golden pants.

Und wir haben uns gedacht, als Geschenk zum Hochzeitstag werden wir die beiden irgendwann im nächsten Jahr oder so nach London entführen.

And we thought that as a present for the wedding anniversary, we want to take those two to London, sometime this year, or the next.

Hm … Halten Renate und Dietmar das auch für eine gute Idee? 😊

But we had more planned: iris portraits. First Miri …

… und dann Torben und ich (unsere beiden sollen auf dem Bild dann „verschmelzen“). Aber Bogdan war mit uns allen unzufrieden, wir haben das mit dem aufgerissenen Auge selten so gemacht, wie er es wollte!

… and then Torben and I (our irises are supposed to “merge” on the picture). But Bogdan was very unhappy with the lot of us, we never did this trick with the wide open eye the way he would have wanted it!

(Und ich musste meine Kontaktlinsen dafür herausnehmen, also keine Fotos mehr 😊 )

(And I had to take out my contact lenses for that, so no more photos 😊)

Schon ein paar Mal hab ich den Tageseintrag ja sehr früh begonnen … dazu möchte ich jetzt ein bisschen ausholen: Morgens um sechs oder früher auf den Balkon zu gehen, dort im Nachthemd in angenehmer Wärme zu sitzen und den Tag zu begrüßen – das ist einfach unvergleichlich und war für mich ein ganz wertvoller Teil dieses Urlaubs.

A few times already I have started the daily entry quite early … I would now like to dwell on that a bit: To go onto the balcony at six in the morning or earlier, to then sit there in my night gown in the pleasant warmth and welcome the day – that is just incredible and for me that was a very precious part of this vacation.

Dieses Gefühl, mit dem Ozean alleine zu sein – ganz besonders an den Tagen, die wir auf See verbracht haben, an denen nicht morgens die nächste Insel am Horizont auftauchte – ist unvergleichlich. Diese Weite, diese Stille! Dazu die angenehm seidige Luft: Das werde ich ganz sicher nie vergessen! – Heute haben wir übrigens recht merkbaren Seegang, aber auf diesem großen Schiff lässt sich das alles sehr gut aushalten.

This sensation of being alone with the ocean – especially on those days that we spent at sea, those days when no new island showed up at the horizon – is just beyond comparison. This expanse, this tranquility! Combined with this wonderfully silky air: I will most definitely never forget that! – By the way, today we have quite noticeable waves, but on this large ship that is really quite easy to bear.

Natürlich gibt es auf dem Schiff auch ein paar andere Sachen zu erleben und auszuprobieren. Deswegen haben wir uns für neun Uhr zum Shuffleboard angemeldet. Wir hatten ja keine Ahnung! Wer kommt denn darauf, dass die obere 10 und die Zahlen rechts als minus zählen! Oder dass man mit dem kleinen Dreieck links unten ganze 50 Punkte erreichen kann!

But of course on the ship there are also some other things to experience and try out. Which is why we signed up for shuffleboard for nine in the morning. Were we ever clueless! Who would have guessed that the top 10 and the numbers on the right side all count as minus! Or that with that tiny triangle at the bottom left, you can reach a whopping 50 points!

Nicht, dass einer von uns diese Punkte jemals abgesahnt hätte – aber wir haben in 2 6er Teams gespielt und wir hatten eine Menge Spaß!

It’s not as if any of us had ever managed to score that – but we played in two teams of 6 players, and we had lots of fun!

So, unser “Trainer” Marcel musste dann weiter, und Torben und ich haben das Schiff noch etwas erkundet. Die „Teens Lounge“ zum Beispiel (keine frechen Kommentare zum Alter, bitte sehr!). Da stehen ein paar Renn-Spiele und so rum, und auch Flipper. Mit diesen Kugeln hab ich bisher immer nur mal am Computer gespielt … jetzt endlich mal live und in Farbe! … Winter is coming!

Okay, our „trainer“ Marcel then had to move on, and Torben and I kept on exploring the ship a bit more. The “teens lounge” for example (no nasty comments regarding age, please!). There some of those racing games and all that are to be found, and also pin-ball machines. Those pin-balls I have only ever played with on the computer … now finally I get to try it live and in colour! … Winter is coming!

Und keine Sorge, ich hab Torben auch mal spielen lassen. Nicht oft, aber immerhin!

And don’t worry, I did let Torben also have a go here and there. Not often, but better than nothing!

Danach gab es nur eine kurze Erfrischung auf der Kabine. Wir haben ja noch mehr vor! An den Ausflugstagen kommt man nicht dazu, all die Annehmlichkeiten des AIDA-Schiffes auszuprobieren. Wobei … Annehmlichkeiten? Wir waren sporteln … über eine Stunde auf dem Heimtrainer, über 20km sind wir „geradelt“.

Afterwards we only took a quick refreshment in our cabin. After all, we have more planned for the day! After all, on the excursion days you never get around to try out all the comforts of the AIDA ship. But then … comforts? We went to do some sports … over an hour on the exercise bikes, we “cycled” over 20km.

Danach ging es ab unter die Dusche und dann sind wir wieder auf eines der oberen Decks. Auf der Such nach den Stabilisatoren. Der Kapitän hat in seiner täglichen Ansprache erwähnt, dass die ausgefahren seien, damit der Seegang den Gästen nicht zu schaffen macht. Aber wir haben nichts entdecken können – wer weiß auch, wo genau diese Teile zu finden sind?

Afterwards we went to have a shower, and then we once again went to one of the upper decks. Searching for the stabilizers. The captain had mentioned in his morning address that those had been deployed, so that the waves would not bother the guests too much. We were unable to discover anything … but then who knows where exactly you find these devices?

Eines ist klar, wir haben jetzt allmählich Hunger. An Bord gibt es eine Menge verschiedene Restaurants, und wir haben schon eine ausprobiert. Aber im „Fuego“ waren wir noch nicht. Da gibt es Pizza, Burger und Eis aus dem Automaten 😊.

One thing is for sure, we are starting to get hungry. On board there are a number of different restaurants, and we already tried several. But so far we had not been to the “Fuego” yet. There they have pizza, burgers and ice cream out of a dispenser 😊.

Wir haben uns einen netten Tisch gesucht und haben wie üblich „eingecheckt“ – wegen der Kontaktverfolgung, falls ein COVID-19-Fall auftritt, und sind dann los, uns am Buffet etwas auszuwählen …

We selected a nice table and then “checked in” as usual – so they can trace our contacts, in case a COVID-19 case should occur, and then we went to select something nice at the buffet …

… und wen haben wir da ganz zufällig getroffen? Na, da sind wir nach dem Essen dann gleich zusammen nochmal ins „Spielzimmer“.

… and who did we meet there totally by chance? Well, that meant that after eating we went straight back to the “gaming room”.

Jeder von uns ist dann einmal durch die Antarktis gerast … nur Dietmar nicht. Der musste den Tisch im Steak House auf morgen umbuchen. Denn heute ist der große Tag, die goldene Hochzeit von Renate und Dietmar. Doch bei diesem Wetter wollten wir es lieber vorsichtig angehen lassen …

Each of us then raced through Antarctica once … all except Dietmar. He had to rebook our table at the Steak House for tomorrow. Because today is the big event, the golden wedding anniversary of Renate and Dietmar. But with the weather as it is, we want to play it safe …

Sie hier merkt die Wellen wahrscheinlich gar nicht, weil sie selber so viel in Bewegung ist. Im Theatrium gab es nachmittags nämlich eine Orient-Show. Aber wir sind da nur durchgelaufen …

This lady here probably does not even notice the waves as much, because she is constantly in motion herself. You see, in the Theatrium they had an Orient show in the afternoon. But we only passed through.

Miri, Torben und ich waren nämlich unterwegs zu den Shops, mal sehen, was es da auf dem Schiff so gibt. Und dann haben wir im Casino Rubbel-Lose gekauft. Heute gabs ein Special, also hat Torben 12 von den Dingern zum Preis von 10 erstanden. Damit sind wir dann zu den Eltern, die beim Sonnenbaden waren. Zu ihrem Ehrentag haben die beiden je 3 Lose gekriegt und waren auch die einzigen von uns, die etwas gewonnen haben … 2€ und 5€ 😊 (Besser als wir beim Bingo …)

Miri, Torben and I were on our way to the shops, we wanted to see what they have on offer on the ship. And then we went to the Casino to get scratch cards. Today they had a special, so Torben bought 12 of those for the price of 10. And with those we then went back to the parents, who were busy sunbathing. On their special day of course they each got 3 lots, and they were also the only ones who won anything … 2€ and 5€ 😊 (Better than we had done at Bingo …)

Dann sind wir zusammen hoch auf Deck 15. Denn es gibt auf der AIDA auch einen Hochseilgarten, und den wollten Torben und ich mal ausprobieren.

Then we all together went up to deck 15. Because on the AIDA they also have a high ropes course, which Torben and I wanted to give a try.

Also hat Dietmar meine Kamera übernommen während wir ausgestattet und eingewiesen wurden. Und dann gings los. Hoch konzentriert!

So Dietmar took over the camera while we got equipped and instructed. And then off we went. Highly focused!

Aber wenn man dann mal wieder ein Stück geschafft hatte, das war ein gutes Gefühl!

But when then you had managed a section, that was a really good feeling!

Das System funktioniert super, man ist immer perfekt gesichert, auch wenn das dauernde Einhaken in die Seile manchmal ein bisschen nervt …

The system works very well, you are always perfectly safe, even if all this attaching yourself to the ropes sometimes gets on your nerves a bit …

… denn falls beim “Fliegenden Teppich“ dann doch mal jemand abgerutscht wäre – ich sage nicht, dass das passiert ist 😊 – dann wäre man sicher „aufgehängt“ gewesen.

… because if at the „Flying Carpet” somebody would have slipped – not that I am saying that this ever happened 😊 – then you would have been safely “hooked up”.

Schön wars, aber durchaus auch anstrengend! Also haben wir danach nicht die Treppen genommen, sondern den Fahrstuhl mit den Spezialeffekten.

It was fun, but also quite exhausting! So afterwards we did not take the stairs, but rather the elevator with the special effects.

Torben und ich haben mal wieder geduscht, dann sind wir ins Theatrium und haben uns da mit Miri getroffen. Ja, da war irgendeine Tanz-Vorführung am Laufen …

Torben and I took another shower, then we went to the Theatrium, to meet Miri there. Yes, they had some kind of dance show going on …

… aber deswegen waren wir nicht da. Wir haben uns häuslich eingerichtet und um acht war es so weit:

Guten Morgen! So, wir haben früh morgens die Dominikanische Republik erreicht. Es scheint, wir mussten um US-amerikanische Gewässer einen Bogen fahren. Aber das Thema „Umwege“ hat uns auch weiter durch den Tag begleitet …

Wir hatten nämlich alle zusammen eine Busfahrt gebucht:

Das Künstlerdorf liegt in “Casa de Campo“, ein gesicherter Bereich, umgeben mit Zäunen und Stacheldraht – hier darf nicht einfach jeder rein!

The artistic village is situated in “Casa de Campo”, a secured area, surrounded by fences and barbed wire – not just anybody is allowed in here!

Aber erst mal muss man hinfinden … unser Busfahrer schien sich nicht so gut auszukennen. Diese Einbahnstraße haben wir rückwärts wieder verlassen 😊

But first of all you have to find the way there … it seemed that our bus driver did not know his way around so well. This one-way street we did leave again, going backwards 😊

Aber dann hat sich gezeigt, dass wir sowieso zuerst zur Höhle wollten.

But then it turned out that anyhow, we wanted to visit the cave first.

Durch einen kleinen Park sind wir zur Höhle. Dort ging es ein paar Treppen hinunter und da waren wir. (Ja, Fotografieren ist eigentlich verboten – aber unser Guide hat mehrere Augen zugedrückt, und natürlich habe ich keinen Blitz genutzt.)

Through a small park we went to the cave. There we walked down a few steps and then we were there. (Yes, taking photos is officially forbidden – but our guide turned a number of blind eyes, and of course I never used a flash.)

An der Decke kann man eine Menge Wurzeln sehen.

At the ceiling you can see loads of roots.

Die sanft beleuchteten Wege durch die Höhle sind sehr schön angelegt. Generell wird immer nur der Teil der Höhle erhellt, den man gerade durchwandert.

The dimly lit paths through the cave are very nicely laid out. In general it is always just that part of the cave that you walk through, which gets illuminated.

Neben den Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten gibt es auch Bereiche, wo das Gestein wirkt wie ein Schwamm voller Löcher.

Next to the stalactites and stalagmites, there are also areas where the rock looks almost like a sponge covered with holes.

Anders als andere Höhlen, die wir gesehen haben, handelt es sich hier um eine große Halle mit mehreren kleinen Ausläufern. Übrigens gibt es in der Dominikanischen Republik nicht weniger als 48.000 Höhlen!

Differing from other caves which we have visited, here we have one large hall with several smaller branches. By the way: In the Dominican Republic you will find the staggering number of 48.000 caves!

Eine sehr sehenswerte Höhle – wir sind froh, dass wir diesen Ausflug gebucht hatten!

Wir sind dann wieder weitergefahren. Bei Casa de Campo wurde uns Zugang gewährt. Wie schon gesagt, alles ist umzäunt … klar, die Leute, die hier wohnen oder Golf spielen, wollen auch nicht von niederem Volk gestört werden.

We then traveled on. At Casa de Campo we were granted admission. As I mentioned before, everything is fenced in … of course, those people who live here or play golf, they do not want to be bothered by lowly folks.

Der Unterschied ist schon spürbar. „Draußen“ sind die Straßen okay, etwas staubig und es liegt eine Unmenge von Müll herum …

And you do notice the difference. “Outside” the streets are okay, a bit dusty and there are heaps of garbage lying around …

… hier „drinnen“ dagegen wirkt alles sehr sauber, frisch und ordentlich. (Und auf den geräumigen Kreisverkehren kann man auch ganz gut rangieren, wenn man mal wieder die falsche Ausfahrt genommen hat – unser Busfahrer fährt sonst ganz offensichtlich andere Strecken!)

… while here „inside“ everything comes across as clean, fresh and proper. (And on those spacious roundabouts you can also maneuver quite well, if you happened to take the wrong exit once again – quite obviously our bus driver usually drives along other routes!)

Na, dann wollen wir uns dieses „Künstlerdorf“ doch mal ansehen, das übrigens noch nicht sehr lange steht. Dieser Nachbau eines mediterranen Dorfes aus dem 16. Jahrhundert wurde 1974 mit dem Ziel konzipiert, nationale Kunst und Kultur zu fördern und zu bewahren.

Okay, so then let us take a look at this “artistic village” which, by the way, has not been standing here for all that long yet. This replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village was designed in 1974 with the aim that it should help boosting and preserving national art and culture.

Es gibt nette, gewundene Wege mit hübschen Kanten und Mauern.

Wir haben auch das kleine Museum besucht. Dort werden zwei Bodenschätze der Region vorgestellt: Zuerst Bernstein. Wusstet Ihr, dass der sehr leicht brennt? Und die Flamme sieht aus wie bei einer Kerze.

We also visited the small museum. There two treasures of the soil of the region are introduced: First amber. Did you know that it burns very easily? And the flame looks like that of a candle.

… und Larimar. Diesen Stein findet man tatsächlich nur auf dieser einen Insel, Hispaniola, die sich die Dominikanische Republik mit ihrem Nachbarn Haiti teilt! 1916 fand ein Priester Steine am Strand, daher dachte man, sie kämen aus dem Meer. 1974 gab dann eine Kundin dem Kunsthandwerker Miguel Mendoza einen blauen Stein, den er in ein Armband einsetzen sollte. Er forschte und fand auch die Quelle der Steine. Und einen Namen gab er den Schönheiten auch, zusammengesetzt aus dem Namen seiner Tochter Larissa und dem spanischen Wort für Meer, mar.

This stone you can actually really only find on this one island Hispaniola which the Dominican Republic and its neighbour Haiti share! 1916 a priest found stones at the beach, which is why people thought that they came out of the ocean. 1974 then, a customer gave the artisan Miguel Mendoza a blue stone and she asked him to insert it into a bracelet. He did some research and also found the source of the stones. And he also gave these beauties a name, a combination of his daughter’s name Larissa and the Spanish word for ocean, mar.

Wir hatten ein Weilchen zur freien Verfügung, da konnte man mal ein bisschen herumlaufen und ansehen, was es so gibt. Ein kleines Kirchlein zum Beispiel.

We had a bit of time to ourselves, so you could now walk around for a bit and take a look at what there was to see. A small church for example.

Und man hätte natürlich auch ein paar Souvenirs kaufen können. Leider sind wegen Corona viele der Künstler, die sonst hier ihre Waren anbieten, nicht da. Denn hier machen sie alles: Töpfern, Weben, Siebdruck und noch viel mehr.

And of course you could have also bought a few souvenirs. Unfortunately, because of Corona many of the artists who normally offer their products here, are not on site. Because here they do it all: pottery to weaving, silk screening and so much more.

Doch wer braucht die? Schönes Wetter, blauer Himmel und Stille … was will man mehr?

But who needs those? Nice weather, blue skies and quiet … what else do you need?

Wir haben dann im Park noch ein paar schöne Orchideen und andere Blumen entdeckt.

We then discovered a few orchids and some other flowers in the park.

Aber dann hieß es auch schon wieder: Sammeln, wir gehen zurück zum Bus!

But then the call went out already: Everybody assemble, we will go back to the bus!

Ja, und dann sind wir wieder in unseren Bus … und ich hab die Dame von AIDA noch gefragt, ob es jetzt direkt zum Schiff zurück geht? – Ja! … Doch dann sind wir über eine Brücke und danach sind wir einen besseren Feldweg hinunter gerumpelt.

Yes, and then we got back onto the bus … and I did ask the lady from the AIDA whether now we would drive straight back to the ship? – Yes! … But then we crossed a bridge and afterwards we clattered down some kind of dirt road.

Fahrer und Guide meinten wohl, wir wollten auch die Flussfahrt noch machen. Ich denke, viele von uns hätten da nichts dageben gehabt. Doch ein Gast ist dann aufgestanden und hat nach vorne gerufen, dass sie für 12:30 die nächste Tour gebucht hätten. Da war es 12:36 … Also schnellstens zurück zum Schiff. Übrigens: immer, wenn man zurückkommt von den Ausflügen, gibt es zur Begrüßung einen frischen Saft, lecker – da haben wir uns schnell dran gewöhnt.

Well, I guess driver and guide thought we would also like to do the river tour. And I think many of us would not have minded. But one guest then got up and called to the front that they have their next tour booked for 12:30. Well, by then it was 12:36 … So back to the ship as fast as possible. By the way: whenever you come back from the excursions, you get a fresh welcome juice, yummy – that was something that we quickly got used to.

Zurück an Bord sind wir nach einem kleinen Snack (Currywurst und Tapas … und Sangrias vielleicht?) auf eines der oberen Decks für einen Rundumblick: Auf schöne Uferkulissen …

Back on board, after a little snack (currywurst and tapas … and maybe also some sangrias?) we went to one of the upper decks for a look once all around: At wonderful coastlines …

Ach so … gleich heute morgen als wir ankamen, hab ich eine Menge lautes Gezwitscher gehört. Klang sehr nach Papageien … also habe ich mich auf dem Balkon dann noch eine Weile auf die Lauer gelegt. Ha! Nicht nur laut sondern auch unglaublich schnell sind die Kerle … nicht zu erwischen!

Oh, by the way … right this morning when we arrived, I heard a lot of quite noisy twittering. Sounded a lot like parrots … so now I took up my post on the balcony for a while. Ha! Those guys are not only very loud but also incredibly fast … you just cannot catch them!

So, nach einer Insel täglich seit dem Start unserer Kreuzfahrt ist heute ein Seetag angesagt. Gar nicht schlecht, wenn man mal ein bisschen Pause kriegt. Und der Blick aufs Meer ist einfach magisch …

Okay, after one island a day since the beginning of our cruise, today a day at sea is on the menu. Not bad at all, to get a bit of a break in between. And the view across the ocean is just magical …

Und dann hab ich etwas gesehen … aber nur ganz kurz. Weiße Libellen??? Also starre ich aufs Wasser – gefährlich, es ist als ob die Wellen einen hypnotisieren: Spring, spring, spring! Aber dann hab ich sie wieder gesehen: Fliegende Fische! Natürlich kann ich keine tollen Fotos bieten, wir sind in Bewegung, die Wellen halten nicht still und die Fischlein schon gar nicht …

And then I saw something … but only for a short glimpse. White dragonflies??? Okay, so I stare at the water – dangerous, it is as if the waves hypnotize you: Jump, jump, jump! But then I saw them again: Flying fishes! I cannot provide any great photos, of course, we are moving, the waves never keep still and the little fishies least of all …

Danach sind wir im “Theatrium” (eine Bühne, die von drei Decks aus eingesehen werden kann) geblieben zum täglichen „Prime Time mit Dominik“.

Afterwards we stayed in the “Theatrium” (a stage that can be seen from three decks) for the daily „Prime Time with Dominik“.

Da haben wir heute unseren Kapitän etwas kennengelernt. Sehr sympathisch und er hat uns spannende Dinge erzählt – über Unterschiede zur Titanic zum Beispiel.

There today we got to know our captain a bit more. Very likeable and he told us interesting tidbits – about differences to the Titanic, for example.

Ganz wichtig: wir haben nicht vor zu sinken!

Very important: we are not planning to sink!

So, heute besuchen wir die nächste Insel. Wir werden in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, anlegen, welches den Niederlanden untersteht. Etwas mehr als die Hälfte der Insel gehört zu Frankreich, das ist dann Saint Martin mit der Hauptstadt Marigot.

Okay, today we visit the next island. We will dock in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, which is under the reign of the Netherlands. A bit more than half of the island belongs to France, that is then Saint Martin with the capital Marigot.

Ausnahmsweise dürfen wir heute auf eigene Faust losziehen. Gut, dass wir keine Ausflüge gebucht haben. – Morgens haben wir schon mitgekriegt, dass ein weiterer Kreuzfahrer kurz nach uns ankam. Aber jetzt stellen wir fest, da gibts noch mehr! (Später haben wir gesehen, dass hinter dem ganz linken Riesen noch einer lag, also insgesamt 5!!!)

Today for a change, we are allowed to set off on our own. Good thing that we had not booked any excursions. – In the morning we had already noticed that another cruise ship had arrived shortly after us. But now we realize, there are even more! (Later we did see that behind the one giant on the far left, there was one more, so all in all it was 5!!!)

Wir nehmen auf jeden Fall das Wassertaxi rüber nach Philipsburg. Mit unseren Armbändchen könnten wir den ganzen Tag hin und her fahren …

In any case, we take the water taxi across to Philipsburg. With our paper bracelets we could ride them back and forth all day …

First we went exploring the boardwalk and the street parallel to it.

Zielstrebig zum Gerichtsgebäude. Das stammt aus dem Jahre 1825 und ist ganz aus Holz gebaut.

Und was wollen wir uns jetzt sonst noch so ansehen? Ursprünglich hatten wir einen Mietwagen gebucht, um auf eigene Faust die Insel zu erforschen. Doch dann hieß es, es sind nirgends individuelle Landgänge erlaubt, also haben wir den Wagen wieder abbestellt … und wie wir hier ankommen, hat AIDA beschlossen, dass wir jetzt doch ohne Aufsicht an Land dürfen!

And what else do we want to look at here? Originally we had booked a rental car, to explore the island on our own. But then we were told, no individual shore leaves are allowed anywhere, so we cancelled the rental car after all … and then when we get here, AIDA has decided that now after all, we are allowed to go ashore without supervision!

Renate und Miri wollten den Strand und die Promenade noch ein wenig genießen, Dietmar, Torben und ich wussten: Jetzt, wo die AIDA-Ketten gesprengt sind, wollen wir etwas mehr von der Insel sehen!

Renate and Miri wanted to enjoy the beach and the boardwalk for a bit longer, while Dietmar, Torben and I knew: Now that the chains of AIDA are broken, we want to see a bit more of the island!

Wir hätten uns gerne ein „normales“ Taxi genommen und dem Fahrer exakt gesagt, wo wir hin wollen. Aber das war nicht zu schaffen. Alle bieten Touren an. Okay, dann versuchen wir es mal mit Nicholas. Der hat uns versichert, dass er uns überglücklich machen wird … hm. Wir sind los und ziemlich bald auf die französische Seite rüber.

We would have liked to take a “normal” cab and to tell the driver exactly where we want to go. But that was just not to be. All of them offer tours. Okay, so we will give it a try with Nicholas. He assured us that he would make us immensely happy … hm. We then got going and pretty soon crossed to the French side.

Hier leben auf jeden Fall Leute mit viel Geld. Laut Nicholas kommt man mal auf die Insel, mietet eine Villa für einen Monat und zieht dann wieder weiter …

One thing is for sure, people with a lot of money live her. According to Nicholas you sometimes come to the island, rent a villa for a month and then move on …

Und dann waren wir an einem noblen Strand – Nicholas dachte, da wären wir jetzt glücklich ohne Ende und würden uns mit Drinks an eine Bar setzen. Tja, oben am Hang, da wollte ich, dass er anhält, der Blick über die Küste wäre ein tolles Foto gewesen. – Aber Nicholas weiß besser, was wir wollen ☹

And then we reached a posh beach – Nicholas thought, that would make us happy to no end and we would love to sit at the bar with some drinks. Well, up on the hill, there I would have liked him to stop, the view across the coast would have been a great photo. – But Nicholas knows so much better what we want ☹

Weiter gings. Fotostopp bei Grand Case. (Wir sind an einem Hügel vorbei, auf dem ein Fort steht, das wäre interessant gewesen, aber Nicholas hat uns belehrt: Da steht kein Fort!)

On we went. A photo stop in the area of Grand Case. (We had passed a hill atop of which we saw a fort – that would have been interesting, but Nicholas instructed us: There is no fort!)

Aber am nächsten Stopp gab es tatsächlich ein Fort, und wir durften auch hochlaufen. (Nicholas hat uns gesagt, da kann man nicht hochfahren. Also waren die Straße und Parkplätze, die wir gesehen haben, genau so eine Fata Morgana wie das erste Fort. Unsere Augen spielen uns Streiche …!)

But at the next stop there actually was a fort, and we were even allowed to walk up to it. (Nicholas told us, you cannot drive up there. So that means the road and the parking lot that we saw, were a Fata Morgana just like the first fort had been. Our eyes are playing tricks on us …!)

Aber nicht irgendein Strand, nein, der Maho-Strand. Das ist der, der direkt vor dem Flughafen liegt …

But not just any old beach, no, the Maho beach. That is the one that is situated right in front of the airport …

Es ist schon verrückt. Der ganze Strand ist voller Leute mit Kameras und Handys in den Händen … nur wegen der Flugzeuge.

It is strange, no question. The whole beach is crowded with people who have cameras and cell phones in their hands … all just because of the airplanes.

Wir haben eine Menge Flieger gesehen – leider keine große Boeing oder so … eher kleine Cessnas und schnittige Privatjets. Aber es war trotzdem toll!!!

We saw quite a few aeroplanes – unfortunately no large Boeing or any of that kind … rather the small Cessnas and racy private jets. But it was exciting nonetheless!!!

Wir sind dann weiter zum letzten Stopp: Ein kleiner Hügel mit Flagge.

We then went on to the next stop: A small hill with a flag.

Leute, die uns entgegen kamen, meinten: da gibts nichts zu sehen! Aber ganz so ist es dann doch nicht …

People who came down the hill, told us: there is nothing to see up there! But that is not quite true …

Kein malerischer leerer Sandstrand mit Klippen sondern durchaus eine Küste, an der eine Menge los ist.

No picturesque empty sandy beach with some cliffs, but rather a coast where a lot is happening.

Ein bisschen weiter nach rechts liegen dann Unmengen von Booten. Was man gut sehen würde, wenn sich da nicht wieder drei Touristen in den Weg gestellt hätten …

A bit farther to the right then, there are endless numbers of boats moored. Which you would be able to see very well, had not three tourists once again gotten in the way …

Ja, das wars dann schon wieder. Abflug zurück zum Schiff!

Yes, and that was it. Take-off back to the ship!

Wobei es eine Weile gedauert hat, bis wir dort waren. – AIDA war da, samt allen Arten von Touristengruppen auf Ausflug. (ganz ehrlich: dass uns die Leute auf den Inseln immer so freundlich begegnen: WARUM? Wenn ich hier leben würde …)

But then, it took a while until we were there. – AIDA was in town, including all kinds of tourist groups on excursions. (in all honesty: that the inhabitants of the islands always treat us with nothing but friendliness: WHY? If I lived here …)

Und wieder bin ich früh wach, aber ich bin nicht die einzige, die es gleich morgens auf den Balkon zieht.

And once again I am up early, but I am not the only one who is drawn onto the balcony first thing in the morning.

Wir nähern uns der nächsten Insel, Antigua. Ein erster Wegweiser ist schon zu sehen.

Dann konnte man eine Befestigung auf einem Hügel erkennen. – Die zu erkunden wäre bestimmt auch spannend!

Recht lange sind wir diesmal mit Land zu „unserer“, der Steuerbord-Seite, gefahren.

For quite a while this time we traveled with land on “our”, the starboard side, in view.

Aber da war nicht nur Land zu sehen …

Hier wurde so früh noch nicht gearbeitet. (es ist kurz vor sieben)

Wir mussten heute auch nicht früh los, also habe ich die meiste Zeit mit Fotos und Blog verbracht, und mit dem Versuch, das WLAN zu nutzen: seeehr schwierig! Früh am Nachmittag sind wir dann alle vom Schiff. Und haben dabei gesehen, wir sind nicht der einzige Ozeanriese hier:

We also did not have to start so early today, so I spent most of the time with photos and the blog, and with trying to use the WIFI: veeery difficult! Then in the early afternoon, we all left the ship. And in doing so, we saw that we are not the only ocean giant here:

Wir wurden dann auf jeden Fall zu unserem Bus geführt, und los ging die Fahrt. Oft hätte ich gerne gerufen: Umdrehen! Denn wirklich alles, was unser Guide Kim uns am Straßenrand gezeigt hat, war links, und wir saßen alle rechts!

Anyhow, we were then led to our bus, and off we went. Often I would have liked to call out: Turn around! Because really everything that our guide Kim showed us at the side of the road, was on the left side, and we were all sitting on the right!

Die Kathedrale, das Stadion, die verfallene Zuckerfabrik, die alte Zuckermühle, die Kirchen, die Rennbahn … oder hier ein chinesischer Supermarkt, der nur drei Jahre stand. Denn nach einem Streit mit seinem Vater hat der Sohn ihn angezündet und sitzt jetzt deswegen im Gefängnis.

The cathedral, the stadium, the decayed sugar factory, the old sugar mill, the churches, the racing track … or here, a Chinese supermarket that was only in operation for three years. Because after a fight with his father, the son burned it down and now is sitting in jail for that.

Kim hat uns unheimlich viel erzählt, und es war auch sehr interessant, aber wir haben uns nicht alles merken können. Auf jeden Fall meinte sie: jede tropische Frucht, die Ihr kennt, gibt es hier auf „Antiga“ (das „u“ spricht man wohl nicht). Es gibt 5 Sorten Bananen, 5 Sorten Avocado und 34 (!!!) Sorten Mango. Kim told us heaps of information, and it was very interesting, but I fear we did not manage to remember everything. One thing she told us: every tropical fruit that you guys know, we have here on “Antiga” (it seems you do not pronounce the “u”). They have 5 kinds of bananas, 5 kinds of avocados and 34 (!!!) kinds of mango. Here for example you see some:

Wir sind durch drei Dörfer gefahren, und dann waren wir an unserem ersten Stopp. Kim hat uns zwei Minuten etwas über die Gegend erzählt, dann haben wir 8 Minuten Freigang gekriegt.

We drove through three villages, then we had reached our first stop. Kim told us something about the area for two minutes, then we were allotted eight minutes of free time.

Man hat einen wunderschönen Blick die Küste entlang.

You have an absolutely gorgeous look along the coast.

Und hier stand ein Fort, von dem noch hier und da Reste übrig sind.

And a fort used to be here, and there are some little bits and pieces still standing.

Kurze Diskussion: Machen wir ein Familienfoto? Oder springen wir von der Klippe? 

Short discussion: Shall we do a family photo? Or rather jump from the cliff?

Viele der Mauerreste sind hinter einem Zaun (da wird wohl gerade restauriert) oder ein Stück weiter weg, also haben wir sie nur mit etwas Abstand gesehen, konnten aber nicht alles aus der Nähe inspizieren.

Many of the remaining walls are fenced in (seems they are busy doing restorations there) or a good way off, so we only saw them from a distance, we could not really inspect everything up close.

Uns hat das, was wir hier gesehen haben, gut gefallen. Antigua mag eine Insel sein, die wir irgendwann noch mal auf eigene Faust besuchen. Vielleicht werden die Restaurationsarbeiten dann ja auch beendet sein?

That which we did get to see here, we did like very much. Antigua might be an island which we will visit on our own sometime. Maybe by then the restorations will be completed?

Wie wir schon wieder im Bus saßen und abfahren wollten, lief draußen ein Mungo über den Weg … da war ich mit der Kamera nicht schnell genug. Kim hat uns erzählt, dass die Schiffe der Kolonialherren und Händler natürlich Ratten mitbrachten. Um die zu dezimieren, wurden dann einige Mungos freigelassen. Zu dumm, dass die tags jagen, während die Ratten eher nachts unterwegs sind. (So wurde eine örtliche Schlangenart auf der Hauptinsel ausgerottet.)

When we were already back in the bus, and ready to take off, outside a mongoose ran across the path … I was not fast enough with my camera there. Kim told us that the ships of the colonial masters and traders had of course also brought rats with them. And to decimate those, they then let loose some mongoose. Too bad that those hunt in the daytime, while the rats are out and about rather in the nighttime. (That way a local snake species went exterminated on the main island.)

Wir sind dann zu einem weiteren früheren Fort: Fort Shirley, benannt nach Thomas Shirley, der für den Bau der gesamten 40 Forts auf der Insel verantwortlich war. Hier stand fast nichts mehr, aber von der Plattform, auf der früher die Kanonen standen, hat man wieder einen sagenhaften Blick.

We then went to another former fort: Fort Shirley, so called after Thomas Shirley, who was responsible for the erection of all the 40 forts on the island. Here there was not much left standing, but from the platform where the cannons used to be, you once again have a magnificent view.

In diese geschützte Bucht haben sich schon früher die Schiffe geflüchtet, wenn es stürmisches Wetter gab oder der Feind hinter ihnen her war. In dem Fall wurde zwischen dem gegenüberliegenden Fort und dem hier, jeweils unten an der Küste eine Kette im Wasser gespannt, um die gegenerischen Schiffe zu zerstören.

In times past already, the ships fled to this protected bay when there was stormy weather, or when the enemy was after them. In that case, a chain was straightened between this fort here and the one across, from lower down the coast on both sides, to destroy the enemy ships.

Etwas abseits gab es schöne Blüten zu sehen. (Und ein Schild zu einem Wanderweg. Falls wir also wiederkommen …)

A bit off the main path, there were pretty flowers to be seen. (And a sign leading to a hike. So, in case we do come back …)

Ach so, und spannende Kakteen gab es hier auch, den „Melocactus“!

Wir sind dann zu unserem letzten Stopp: Nelson’s Dockyard. Hier hatten wir knapp 40 Minuten Aufenthalt, aber es war auch ein großes Gelände und es gab eine Menge zu sehen … (Hier liegen übrigens auch jede Menge Yachten vor Anker.)

We then went to our last stop: Nelson‘s Dockyard. Here we had a stay of almost 40 minutes, but it was quite a large area, and there was so much to see … (By the way, lots of yachts are also moored here.)

Die ersten paar Minuten hat ein junges Mädchen uns eine Einführung gegeben, doch ich muss gestehen, ich habe nicht viel von dem, was sie erzählt hat, behalten. Erstens hat sie ihren Text heruntergeleiert und zweitens hat sie immer erzählt, was jetzt in den Gebäuden ist, Souvernirläden und Restaurants, da hab ich dann von dunklen Wesen ablenken lassen …

The first few minutes a young girl gave us an introductory talk, but I must admit, I don’t remember much of what she said. Because first of all she just rattled off her text and secondly she always told us what the buildings are used for now, souvenir shops and restaurants, and then I let dark creatures distract me …

Aber hier gab es Schilder an den verschiedenen Stationen, also kann ich Euch doch ein bisschen etwas erzählen. Hier zum Beispiel: Mit den Winden wurde ein Schiff, das im Wasser lag, mit Seilen herangezogen und auf die Seite gekippt. Dann dauerte es 6 Monate, bis die Seite des Schiffes gereinigt und ausgebessert war. 1950 wurden die Capstans entfernt, zwei Jahre später wurden Replikate angefertigt, die 2004 nochmal ersetzt wurden.

But here they had put up information tablets at the different stations, so I can tell you a little bit at least. Here for example: With the capstans a ship that was floating in the water, was pulled close by using ropes and then it was tilted to its side. Then it took six months until one side of the ship was cleaned and repaired. 1950 the capstans had been removed, two years later replicas were fashioned, which in 2004 got replaced once more.

Es gibt eine sehr alte Sonnenuhr zu sehen. (Hier stand leider keine Infotafel und ich habe vergessen, was uns das junge Mädchen dazu erzählt hatte.)

A very old sundial can be admired. (Here they had no info tablet, and I forget what the young girl had told us.)

In diesem Gebäude, das 1821 gebaut wurde, wurden die Offiziere untergebracht, während ihr Schiff repariert wurde. Im Erdgeschoss befinden sich 12 große Zisternen, die insgesamt 1.200.000 Liter Regenwasser halten konnten, das hier gesammelt wurde.

In this building, which had been erected 1821, the officers were put up, while their ship was being repaired. On the ground floor you find 12 large cisterns capable of holding a total of 1.200.000 litres of rain water, which was collected here.

Zweimal kamen wir an Palmen vorbei, wo Schilder standen: Die eine wurde von Königin Elizabeth II gepflanzt, am 22.2.1966, die andere von Lady Blackburne am 21.4.1955. Aber das waren keine von diesen gefächerten, die wir interessanter fanden …

Twice we passed palm trees where there were signs: The one had been planted by Queen Elizabeth II, 22.2.1966, the other one by Lady Blackburne, 21.4.1955. But that had not been this fanned kind, which we found more interesting …

Die „normaleren“ Palmen standen ja überall herum … auch hier an der Mauer.

After all, the „normal“ palm trees were to be found everywhere … also here at the wall.

Dieses Gebäude ist das jüngste in der ganzen Anlage, es wurde erst 1855 gebaut. Hier wohnte leitende Marineoffizier oder Buchhalter der Werft. Das Haus ähnelt seinen Georgischen Nachbarn in den Proportionen, mit großen Fenstern und der Raumhöhe, aber hier kommen auch Elemente des typisch Karibischen zum Tragen. Die Raumteiler mit den geschlitzen Leinwänden zum Beispiel, aber die sind natürlich innen, wo heute ein Museum ist. Das zu besuchen haben wir zeitlich leider nicht mehr geschafft.

This building is the youngest in the facility, it was built in 1855. The senior naval officer or the accountant of the dockyard lived here. The house reflects its Georgian neighbours din proportion with large windows and room height, but elements of Caribbean vernacular also come into play here. The screen-louvered room dividers for example, but they are inside of course, where a museum is situated these days. And to visit that we unfortunately did not manage, due to time constraints.

Wir sind dann wieder zurück zum Schiff gefahren. Vorbei an Mahagonibäumen (Kim hat uns erzählt, dass die Briten 95% davon abgeholzt hatten, weil sie das Land für den Anbau von Zuckerrohr brauchten) und vielen, vielen Kirchen. Zu dieser hier haben wir erfahren, dass man den Kirchgang scherzhaft damit beschreibt, dass man eine Dosis Pepto-Bismol nimmt (ein amerikanisches Arzneimittel gegen Bauchschmerzen, welches sehr pink ist).

We were then brought back to the ship. Past mahogany trees (Kim had told us that the British had cut down 95% of them, because they had needed the land for the cultivation of sugar cane) and many, many churches. Regarding this one, we were told that when you go to church here, you jokingly say that you take a dose of Pepto-Bismol (an American medicine against stomach pain, which is very pink).

Ja, und dann waren wir wieder an Bord, haben abgelegt und uns auf den Weg gemacht zur nächsten Insel. Die ist spannend, weil sie zwei Länder vereint! – Aber jetzt erst mal: gute Nacht!
