The Big Journey

So, heute haben wir in Roseau angelegt, auf der Insel Dominica.

Okay, today we docked in Roseau, on the island Dominica.

Es regnet mal wieder, aber egal. Damit uns diese Insel Freude bringt, braucht es nur einen Wal! Dafür haben wir die nächste Bootstour gebucht.

Once again it is raining, but no worries. In order for us to enjoy this island, we only need one whale! For that we booked the next boating tour.

Den Weg zum Boot haben wir unter Aufsicht zurückgelegt.

The walk to the boat we did under surveillance.

Das Boot war dieses Mal deutlich größer, wir waren auch mehr Passagiere an Bord: 60, glaube ich. Und natürlich unser Kapitän Francis und seine Helfer Nigel Junior und Reggi.

This time the boat was much bigger, and we were also more passengers on board. 60, I think. And, of course, our captain Francis and his helpers Nigel Junior and Reggi.

Das Wetter war anfangs gar nicht angenehm, wie gut, dass es einen überdachten Bereich gab an Bord!

The weather at first was not all that agreeable, lucky for us that there was a covered area on board!

Wir sind ein Stück weit rausgefahren, dann gab es einen Stopp, damit Francis uns erklären konnte, welche Wale es hier gibt. Grindwale zum Beispiel.

We went out for a bit, and then there was a stop, so that Francis could tell us which whales can be found here. Pilot whales, for example.

Das nächste Mal, dass wir gehalten haben, war dann schon zum Lauschen. Mit solch einem Sonar hat Francis geprüft, ob die Klicks eines Pottwals zu hören sind.

The next time we stopped then, it was already for listening. With such a sonar Francis checked whether the clicks of a sperm whale can be heard.

Das haben wir drei mal gemacht … aber kein Silberstreif am Horizont, was Klicks anging.

We did that three times … but no silver lining, regarding whale clicks.

Naja, ich hab die Insel fotografiert … auch wenn es da nach wie vor furchtbar wolkig war.

Oh well, I took pictures of the island … even though it was still very cloudy there.

Und dann ist Francis lange, lange Zeit mit voller Geschwindigkeit Richtung Norden gerast. Schliesslich kam der Ruf: Da bläst er!

And then Francis went full speed for a long time, racing northwards. Finally we heard the call: There she blows!

Zuerst haben wir außer diesen Nebelwölkchen nichts gesehen … und ich schon gar nicht, ich stand am falschen Platz, und vorne am Boot, wo man den besten Blick hatte, haben sich die Reihen geschlossen. Doch da dreht sich eine Dame um und winkt mich zu sich. Ich hab dann vor ihr gekniet, also haben wir beide etwas gesehen. Dann habe ich die Rückenflosse entdeckt.

First we did not see anything except for those little foggy puffs … and me least of all, I was standing at the wrong spot, and at the front of the boat, where you had the best view, people closed ranks. But then one lady turns around and waves me over. I then kneeled in front of her, that way we could both see something. Then I spotted the back fin.

Unser Kapitän hat uns gesagt, das sei ein ganz junger (also noch kleiner) Pottwal.

Our captain told us that this was a very young (and thus rather small) sperm whale.

Etliche Male konnten wir den Rücken sehen.

Several times we could see the back.

Dann auch ganz wunderbar das Blasloch.

And then wonderfully well the blow hole.

Dann ist der Wal noch ein letztes Mal weit aus dem Wasser gekommen und … abgetaucht. (aber wir mussten sowieso zum Schiff zurück, wir waren schon spät dran 😊 )

Then for one last time the whale came way out of the water and … dived down. (but we had to get back to the ship anyhow, we were late as it was 😊)

Damit war der Tag aber noch nicht vorbei. Morgens waren Torben und ich alleine unterwegs gewesen, am Nachmittag hatten wir dann eine Bustour mit der ganzen Familie, in diesem netten Gefährt:

But that was not all for this day. In the morning Torben and I had been about on our own, in the afternoon then we had a ride with the whole family, in this lovely vehicle:

Moira hat uns geführt und sie hat uns eine Menge erzählt. Hier zum Beispiel sind wir zwischen zwei Friedhöfen durchgefahren, und laut Moira sind auf dem linken (hier auf dem Foto) die Protestanten beerdigt, die Katholiken liegen rechts der Straße.

Moira guided us, and she gave us a lot of information. Here, for example, we traveled between two cemeteries, and according to Moira, on the left one (here on the photo) the Protestants are buried, the Catholics are interred on the right side of the street.

Der erste Stopp war auf einem Berg hinter der Hauptstadt Roseau, Morne Bruce. Von da hatte man dann einen schönen Blick hinunter auf die Stadt und das Meer. Übrigens: hier im Stadion wird hauptsächlich Cricket gespielt, außerdem Fußball, und größere Zeremonien werden hier abgehalten.

The first stop was on a mountain behind the capital Roseau, Morne Bruce. From there you then had a nice view down across the city and the ocean. By the way: here in the stadium they mainly play cricket, then also football, and larger ceremonies are held here.

Dominica wurde im Vertrag von Paris 1763 den Briten zugesprochen. Um die Insel vor den Franzosen zu verteidigen, wurden Militäringenieure beauftragt, Pläne zur Verteidigung der Kolonie zu erstellen. Captain James Bruce, königlicher Ingenieur, war der Leiter dieses Projektes. Und nach ihm wurde Morne Bruce benannt, wo die wichtigste Garnison gebaut wurde. – Doch davon steht wohl nichts mehr. (wir hatten nur einen sehr kurzen Aufenthalt hier oben …)

Dominica was ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. To keep the island save from the French, military engineers were commissioned to produce plans for the defence of the colony. Captain James Bruce, Royal Engineer, was head of that project. And Morne Bruce was named after him, where the main garrison was built. – But it seems nothing of that is left. (we only had a very short stop up here …)

Hier haben wir leider nicht angehalten, und ich saß auf der falschen Seite im Bus 😊, aber ich will Euch das Foto nicht vorenthalten: Da stand dieser gelbe Bus ungünstig, als ein Erdbeben kam. – Immerhin war er leer.

Here, unfortunately, we did not stop, and I sat on the wrong side of the bus 😊, but I do not want to keep this photo from you: Here this yellow bus was parked awkwardly, when an earthquake struck. – But at least it had been empty.

Wir sind immer wieder mal an Brotfruchtbäumen vorbeigefahren. Moira hat uns dazu erzählt, dass Kapitän Bligh die aus Indien auf die Insel gebracht hätte, um damit die Sklaven zu füttern. Schmeckt wie Brot, ist aber billiger … Heute spielt diese Frucht eine besondere Rolle in der dominicanischen Küche.

Several times we drove past breadfruit trees. Moira told us about those that captain Bligh had brought them to the island from India, to feed the slaves. It tastes like bread, but is much cheaper … Today this fruit plays a special role in the Dominican cuisine.

Überhaupt haben wir so viele Pflanzen im Vorbeifahren gesehen, die Moira uns gezeigt hat. Hier seht Ihr einen Kaffeebusch.

Anyhow, just driving past, there were so many plants that we saw, which Moira pointed out to us. Here you see a coffee tree.

Und hier versteckt sich jemand ganz schüchtern. Wahrscheinlich, weil sie nicht mehr die Nationalpflanze ist, wie wir erfahren haben – weil es sie auch auf den anderen Inseln gibt, hat man ihr den Status entzogen.

And here someone is hiding rather timidly. Probably because it is no longer the national plant, as we found out – because it is also to be found on the other islands, so it was deprived of that status.

Direkt daneben: ein Kakaostrauch. (die drei, Kaffee, ex-Nationalpflanze und Kakao standen übrigens alle nebeneinander, einfach so am Straßenrand)

Right next to it: a cocoa bush. (those three, coffee, ex-national plant and cocoa stood right next to each other, just there at the side of the road)

Wir sind unterwegs zu einer „Familie“ Wasserfälle. Schon von weitem hatte uns Moira „Papa“ und „Mama“ gezeigt, an einem „Baby“-Wasserfall kamen wir auch vorbei, der war eher unspektakulär. Aber die Landschaft war auch so schön …

We are on our way to a “family” of waterfalls. From far off already Moira had pointed out “Papa” and “Mama” to us, we also passed a “Baby” waterfall, which was rather unspectacular. But the landscape was pretty in any case …

Und außerdem sind wir jetzt auch gleich da!

And we are almost there now!

… Mama Wasserfall dagegen aus einem Fluss. Und dann vereinen sich die Wasserläufe und fließen ins Meer.

… Mama waterfall on the other hand by a river. And then the waterways unite and flow into the ocean.

Wir haben am Aussichtspunkt ein paar Minuten abgehangen, …

We hung around at the lookout for a few minutes, …

… sind dann an spannenden Pflanzen und schönen Blüten vorbei zurück zum Bus …

… then walked back to the bus, past interesting plants and pretty flowers …

… und dort gab es eine kurze Erfrischungspause.

… and there then we had a short break for refreshments.

Dann gings weiter und wir haben am Wegesrand soviel gesehen … Kokospalmen, Bananen, oder hier Sternfrüchte – Moira nannte sie five-star-fruits (fünf-Sterne-Früchte).

Then the ride continued and we saw so much on the side of the road … coconut palms, bananas, or here star fruits – Moira called them five-star-fruits.

Und immer mal wieder Brotfrüchte.

And time and again breadfruits.

An einer heißen (laut Moira zu heißen) Quelle sind wir nur vorbeigefahren …

We only passed a hot (according to Moira too hot) spring …

… dann über diese Brücke …

… then went across this bridge …

… zu einer Schwefelquelle. Da haben wir kurz angehalten.

Schon spannend, was da so alles blubbert.

Quite amazing, all that bubbles there.

Drum herum gab es immer wieder schöne Blumen zu sehen.

All around there were nice flowers to be seen.

Leider kann ich Euch zu den schönen Pflanzen weiter nichts erzählen. Ich würde ja nachforschen … aber das Internet ist an Bord teuer und quälend langsam.

Unfortunately I cannot tell you much about all these pretty plants. I wouldn’t mind researching that … but the internet here on board is expensive and terribly slow.

Wir sind dann wieder weitergefahren, zu einem letzten Stopp, da gab es Erfrischungen. Wahlweise Saft mit oder ohne Rum. Und ja, es mag sein, dass jemand aus unserer Gruppe da was gekauft hat … ich wars nicht! 😊

We then traveled on, to one last stop where we got refreshments. You could choose between juice with or without rum. And yes, it might have happened that one of our group bought something there … it wasn’t me! 😊

Auf dem Weg zurück zum Schiff sind wir dann an einer zerstörten Kirche vorbeigekommen. Moira hat uns erzählt, dass sie 1976 bei einem Hurrikan zerstört wurde, dann wieder aufgebaut … und dann kam 2017 der nächste Hurrikan!

On the way back to the ship we then passed a damaged church. Moira told us that it was destroyed during a hurricane in 1976, then they rebuilt it … and then 2017 the next hurricane came along!

Ja, und dann waren wir schon wieder beim Schiff, und so um sechs herum gings dann weiter. Bis morgen!

Yes, and then we were already back at the ship, and around six or so we were on our way again. Until tomorrow!

Guten Morgen! Ich war wieder früh wach und bin gleich mit Kamera und Laptop auf den Balkon. Wir sind bisher ja immer nachts unterwegs und laufen dann ganz früh die nächste Insel an. Da tauchen dann immer „Pilot“ Boote auf, die uns wohl an den Liegeplatz dirigieren.

Good morning! I was up early once again and went straight onto the balcony with camera and laptop. We are so far traveling during the nighttime and then reach the next island very early in the morning. That is when the “pilot” boats show up, to guide us to our berth, I guess.

Hier sieht man ganz gut die Größenverhältnisse. Diese Kreuzfahrtschiffe sind wirklich echte Riesen!

Here you can see the difference in size quite well. These cruise ships really are true giants!

Tja, ich war mit dem Laptop beschäftigt … und wie ich dann mal wieder auf die Insel blicke: regnet es in Strömen! – Naja, wir haben heute ja auch einen Ausflug in den REGENwald gebucht …

Well, I was busy at my laptop … and when then I did look out at the island once more: it is pouring rain! – Oh well, after all we did book a tour into the RAINforest for today …

Wir sind auf jeden Fall zum Sammelpunkt, dann wurden wir in kleine Busse gepackt (von einer sehr energischen und lustigen jungen Dame: „don’t go links!“, „I love you all!“) und los ging die Fahrt.

Anyhow, we went to our assembly point, there we were put into small buses (by a very energetic and funny young lady: “don’t go links!”, “I love you all!”) and off we went.

Ich habe mich extra vorne hinter den Fahrer gesetzt, da war das Fenster ein wenig offen … aber aus einem ruckeligen Kleinbus, der enge, gewundene Straßen den Berg hoch hastet, lassen sich nicht viele gute Fotos machen …

I made sure to sit behind the driver, there the window was slightly open … but out of a bucking minibus, which rushes up the hill on narrow, winding streets, you don’t get the chance to take many good photos …

Aber dann waren wir am Startpunkt unserer Wanderung. Leider an derselben Stelle, wo auch das Ziplining und die Seilbahn zu finden sind.

But then we reached the starting point of our hike. Unfortunately at the same spot where you also find the ziplining and the gondola lift.

Während unserer Wanderung hat es weiter geregnet, oft sogar ziemlich heftig. Wir haben den Regen aber nur gehört, nicht gespürt. Durch das dichte Blätterdach waren wir perfekt geschützt.

During our hike it kept on raining, at times quite heavily. But we only heard the rain, we did not feel it. We were protected wonderfully by the dense tree canopy. (XXX?)

Der Weg ging zum Teil sehr steil den Berg hinauf. Die meiste Zeit waren mit Brettern einfache Stufen angelegt, dazwischen ging es einfach über Wurzeln und Steine.

The path went up the hill, at times quite steeply. Most of the time there were steps put up with simple boards, in between you simply walked across roots and rocks.

Der junge Mann, der uns geführt hat, hat hier und da etwas erklärt … aber da wir ganz am Ende der Truppe waren, haben wir nicht alles mitgekriegt. Zu diesem „Baum“ hat er erzählt, dass der um einen bestehenden Baum herumwächst und ihn „erwürgt“. Daher bleibt dann in der Mitte ein Hohlraum. (das sehen wir später noch)

The young man who led us, did explain some things here and there … but since we were right at the end of the group, we did not catch all of it. Regarding this “tree” he told us that it grows around an existing tree and strangles it. Thus a hollow space is left in the middle. (we will see that later on)

Wir haben auf jeden Fall den Regenwald genossen. All das Grün, all die verschiedenen Blattformen, alles schien so lebendig!

In any case, we enjoyed the rainforest. All that green, all the different shapes of leaves, everything seemed so very alive!

Wir waren 15 Leute, die sich schwitzend den Berg hoch gearbeitet haben.

We were 15 people, who laboured up the hill, sweating.

Gut, dass deswegen immer mal alle eine Pause brauchten, da konnte ich dann wieder die anderen einholen. Denn es gab viel zu fotografieren …

Good thing that therefore everybody needed a bit of a break here and there, then I had the chance to catch up with the others. Because there were lots of photos to be taken …

Die meiste Zeit gab es aber einfach nur ganz viel grün in allen Schattierungen.

But most of the time you simply saw lots of green in all kinds of shades.

Dann hat unser Guide uns einen Baum gezeigt, der von oben bis unten voller Stacheln ist – nicht anfassen!

Then our guide showed us a tree that is covered in spikes from top to bottom – do not touch!

Da kann man schon die Stirn in Falten legen.

Oder sich einen Bart wachsen lassen?

Or make you grow a beard?

Ich hab doch erwähnt, dass es über uns fleißig geregnet hat? Hier und da konnten wir an der diesigen Luft sehen, wieviel Wasser da unterwegs war.

I mentioned that above us it did rain quite busily? Well, here and there the misty air showed you how much water was about.

Bei dieser Pflanze hat der Guide erklärt, dass sie sich vom Baum in die Höhe tragen lässt, ihm aber nicht schadet.

About this plant, the guide told us that it lets itself be carried up by the tree, but it does not harm it in any way.

Tja, und dann waren wir am Ende unseres Weges, da wo auch die Seilbahn abfährt. Wir sind einfach den Weg, den wir kamen, wieder zurückgegangen.

Well, and then we had reached the end of our path, the spot where the gondolas depart as well. We simply walked back the way we had come.

Wenn es nach mir gegangen wäre, hätten wir gerne viel langsamer gehen können – es hätte noch viel zu entdecken und fotografieren gegeben.

Had it been up to me – we could have walked much slower. There would have been so much more to discover and take pictures of.

Denn solche kleinen Kostbarkeiten sieht man natürlich nur, wenn man auch mal ein bisschen stehen bleibt und sich umsieht.

Because such precious miniatures you only spot of course, when you stop for a while and look around a bit.

Doch wir sind relativ schnell die Treppen hinuntergeplätschert …

But we rippled down the steps rather quickly …

Ganz am Ende des Weges haben wir eine andere Route genommen, durch eine Art kleiner botanischer Garten.

Then towards the end of the path we took a different way, through a bit of a botanical garden.

Übrigens war das Wetter jetzt wieder sonnig und trocken – wir sind also nicht nass geworden 😊

By the way, the weather was now again nicely sunny and dry – so we did not get wet at all 😊

Schon während der Wanderung hatten wir immer wieder Vögel gehört aber nicht gesehen. Dieser kleine Kerl ist mir auch fast entwischt …

During the hike already we kept hearing birds here and there, but we had not seen any. This little guy here also almost escaped me …

Noch einmal winken zum Abschied, dann geht es zurück zum Schiff.

So, der erste Tag unserer Karibik-Reise bricht an … und wir sind natürlich viel zu früh wach. Dieses Foto ist von kurz nach nach sechs. (in Deutschland ist es schon elf)

Okay, the first day of our Caribbean voyage is starting … and of course we are awake much too early. This photo was taken just past 6 am. (it is already eleven in Germany)

Aber immerhin haben wir auf die Weise ein bisschen mitgekriegt, wie das große Schiff zwischen zwei Inseln durch ist, um dann in einem großen Bogen den Hafen anzulaufen. Wir besuchen heute St. Vincent.

But at least that way we got to watch how this huge ship moved between two islands, to then steer toward the harbour doing a wide turn. Today we visit St. Vincent.

Und außerdem schadet es ja sowieso nicht, früh aufzustehen, es gibt immer eine Menge zu tun. Blog-Einträge vorzubereiten, zum Beispiel …

And then, it is never wrong to get up early, there is always loads to do. Preparing blog entries, for example …

Wie praktisch, dass Miri in ihrem Zimmer einen Kaffee-Automaten hat und ich als einzige keinen Kaffee trinke. So konnte die Familie ein bisschen vor-frühstücken und ich weiter Fotos sichten.

It comes handy that Miri has a coffee maker in her room, and that I am the only one who does not drink coffee. That way the family could have a bit of a pre-breakfast, and I could check photos.

Ja, und dann war es irgendwann Zeit für unsere ersten Ausflüge. Die anderen drei werden mittags zu einer Bustour aufbrechen, Torben und ich hatten für neun Uhr das Whale Watching gebucht. Also ab an den Pier und warten, bis wir alle zusammen haben. Dabei haben wir dann Vögel beobachtet:

Yes, and then it was time for our first excursions. The others will go on a bus tour around noon, while Torben and I had booked a whale watching trip for nine in the morning. So we go down to the dock and wait until we have all participants collected. During that time we watched some birds:

Eigentlich war geplant gewesen, dass wir alle auf einem größeren Schiff nach Walen suchen und dann noch einen Abstecher nahe zum Vulkan machen, der ja letztes Jahr ausgebrochen war. Da hätte man dann sehen sollen, wo die Lava ins Meer geflossen ist. Aber das wurde geändert, wir fahren in zwei kleinen Booten raus (auf unserem waren wir neun Gäste, eine AIDA-Dame, Kapitän Rick und sein Helfer Kevin).

The original plan had been that we would all search for whales while on a larger boat, and to also take a detour close to the volcano that had erupted last year. There we should have been able to see where the lava had flowed into the ocean.  But they had changed that, now we will go out in two smaller boats (on ours we were nine guests, a lady from AIDA, captain Rick and his helper Kevin).

Zunächst sind wir nah an der Küste geblieben und Rick hat uns wichtige Gebäude der Hauptstadt Kingstown gezeigt. Das rechts mit der Uhr beherbergt wohl eine Menge Regierungsbüros, wo man sich mit dem Handel befasst. Links daneben das Haus mit dem roten Dach, da ist die Polizei ansässig, und links, das Gebäude mit den Streifen, da ist wohl der Fischmarkt.

At first we stayed close to the coast and Rick pointed out important buildings of the capital Kingstown. The one on the right with the clock seems to contain a lot of government offices, where everything connected to trade is handled. Next on the left, the house with the red roof, that is where the police is situated, and on the left, the building with the stripes, that seems to be the fish market.

Dann haben wir diese Landzunge umfahren. Oben sieht man die Festung, von wo aus eigentlich die Insel vor Feinden von außen verteidigt werden sollte. Aber zuletzt waren die Kanonen wohl ins Landesinnere gerichtet. Da waren die Kolonialherren mit „ihrem Volk“ nicht so ganz zufrieden …

Then we went around this tongue of land. At the top you see the fortification from where originally the island should have been protected from enemies from without. But towards the end the cannons were directed inland. That was when the colonial masters were not quite pleased with “their people” …

Weiter unten am Hang sieht man ein weiteres Gebäude. Rick hat uns erzählt, dass hier früher die Leprakranken untergebracht waren. Heute hat hier ein Fernsehsender seinen Sitz.

Further down the slope you see another building. Rick told us that in old times people who suffered from leprosy were placed here. Today a tv station is to be found on this spot.

Seht Ihr die Treppen, die hier in den Fels geschlagen wurden? Das war der Weg für die Leprakranken hinunter zum Wasser.

Can you see the steps that were hewn into the rocks here? That was the path for the lepers down to the water.

Neben den Treppen oder auf dem Foto hier seht Ihr, wie man immer wieder schön die Gesteinsschichten erkennen kann.

Next to the stairs, or on this next photo you can see how time and again you can nicely discern different layers of rocks.

Als nächstes haben wir unter einem Überhang einen Reiher entdeckt.

Next we spotted a great heron under a bit of an overhang.

Dann kamen wir an einer Werft vorbei. Laut Rick werden hier Schiffe instandgesetzt.

Then we passed a shipyard. According to Rick they do repair ships here.

Als nächstes kam das industrielle Zentrum der Insel. Hier wird Mehl und Zucker verarbeitet.

The next thing we saw was the industrial center of the island. Here flour and sugar are processed.

Dann die nächste Felsnase. Und Ihr seht vielleicht die weißen Stellen?

Then the next rocky outcrop. And you might see the white areas?

Aber denen haben wir erst mal wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, denn vor uns war eine Schildkröte. Wir hatten davor schon zweimal kurz eine auftauchen sehen, aber diese hier blieb länger oben und ließ sich ein bisschen beobachten.

But at first we did not pay them much attention, because in front of us there was a turtle. Twice before we had already seen one come up for air for a moment, but this one stayed on the surface for a longer time and we could watch it a bit.

Dann noch einmal ein Blick auf die Vögel auf den Felsen …

Then a look back to the birds on the rocks …

… danach machen wir einen Abflug und fahren weiter.

Und dann hat Rick uns diese Stelle gezeigt: Hier wurde eine der Anfangsszenen von „Fluch der Karibik“ gedreht.

And then Rick showed us this spot: Here one of the opening scenes of “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed.

Als nächstes haben wir, wie dieses Boot vor uns, eine kleine Höhle angesteuert. Hier leben Fledermäuse, die man auch leise hören kann – gesehen haben wir keine.

Next, like this boat in front of us, we steered towards a little cave. Bats do live here, which you can hear a bit – we have not seen any.

Aber schon alleine die Felsendecke ist beeindruckend. (Übrigens schnorcheln hier wohl gerne mal Leute durch die Höhle, es gibt nämlich auch einen schmalen Ausgang auf der anderen Seite.)

But the rocky ceiling in itself is quite impressive. (By the way: it seems that people like to snorkel through the cave, because there is also a small exit on the other side. )

Und dann sind wir raus aufs offene Meer, wir hatten ja gehofft, Wale und/oder Delfine zu sehen. Tja, das hat leider nicht geklappt. Aber wir haben die Fahrt trotzdem genossen.

And then we went out onto the ocean, after all we had hoped we would get to see whales and/or dolphins. Well, that did not work out unfortunately. But we enjoyed the ride nonetheless.

Das Wetter war toll, die Leute auf dem Boot eine nette Truppe, und unser Kapitän hat uns immer wieder was gezeigt. Hier seht Ihr jetzt immerhin von weitem den Vulkan, dem wir gerne näher gekommen wären 😊

The weather was great, the people on our boat were a nice bunch, and our captain kept pointing things out to us. Here you can see the volcano that we would have liked to get a bit closer to, at least from a bit farther off 😊

Rick hat sich dann entschieden, einen anderen Abstecher mit uns zu machen, wenn es schon keine Wale gab: Wir sind wieder an die Küste, zu einem weiteren Spot, an dem „Fluch der Karibik“ gedreht wurde:

Rick then decided to do another detour with us, seeing that we were unable to find any whales: We went back toward the coast, to another spot where they shot “Pirates of the Caribbean”:

Und auch hier wurde gedreht. Das meiste steht nicht mehr, denn Rick hat uns erzählt, dass nur für den Film hier Fassaden aufgebaut wurden.

And here as well they shot scenes. There is not all that much left standing, because Rick told us that they had just put up facades for the movie.

Tja, wir haben dann abgestimmt: Eigentlich sollte noch ein Ausflug zu einem Strand Teil des Programms sein. Aber Rick hat uns gefragt, ob wir das wollen oder lieber weiter nach Walen suchen. Das Ergebnis war 2:7. Also haben wir weiter – wenn auch erfolglos – gesucht. Aber das Meer war sehr ruhig, die Fahrt war einfach nur schön – den Wellen zuzusehen hatte etwas von einer Meditation …

Well, and then we took a vote: We were really meant to also do a stop at a beach as part of today’s program. But Rick asked us whether we wanted that or rather keep looking for whales. The result was 2:7. So we kept on scanning the waves – if unsuccessfully. But the ocean was very calm, the ride was just gorgeous – watching the waves was somehow like meditating …

Es gab dann auch noch einen leckeren Rum-Punsch, was will man mehr?

And we then also got some rum punch – what else would you want?

Tja … und dann gings zurück zu unserem momentanen Zuhause – schön war der Ausflug, auch ohne Wale und Delfine!

Well … and then we went back to our current home – it was a nice excursion, even without whales and dolphins!

Wir müssen jetzt an Bord, etwas essen, etwas ausruhen … und uns vor allem schick machen!

We now have to get on board, eat something, rest a bit … and most of all, dress up!

Denn heute hat Renate Geburtstag. Die Kabine der Eltern war dann auch extra hübsch arrangiert.

Because today Renate has her birthday. And the cabin of the parents was then accordingly prettily arranged.

Und für den Abend hatte Dietmar einen Tisch im „Casa Nova“ reserviert. Auch da hat sich die Crew viel Mühe gegeben, den Tag besonders zu machen.

And for the evening Dietmar had booked a table at the “Casa Nova”. And there as well, the crew did a lot to make it a special day.

So, es geht mal wieder auf Urlaub! Und so exotisch dieses Bild auch aussehen mag, da sind wir noch ganz banal in Deutschland, genauer gesagt in Frankfurt am Bahnhof. Da müssen wir nicht nur hin, weil hier unser Flug beginnt, hier treffen wir auch unsere Reisegefährten … Torbens Eltern werden am 21. Januar ihre goldene Hochzeit feiern, und dazu haben sie sich gewünscht, dass ihre Tochter Miri und ihr Sohn Torben (samt mir als Anhängsel) mitkommen auf eine Karibik-Kreuzfahrt. Ach … da haben wir uns nicht lange betteln lassen 😊

Okay, once again we are off on a vacation! And no matter how exotic this photo might look, here we are still in plain old Germany, in Frankfurt at the train station, to be exact. Not only do we have to go there because this is where our flight will start, this is also where we meet our travel compagnons … Torben’s parents will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on January 21, and it was their wish that their daughter Miri and their son Torben (with me as an addendum) join them on a Caribbean cruise. Well … it did not take all that much persuading 😊

In Frankfurt haben wir uns also am 12.1. abends getroffen, haben unsere negativen PCR Tests alle mitgebracht, dann vor Ort alle noch einmal einen Schnelltest gemacht … damit haben wir alle Vorbedingungen für die Reise erfüllt. Wir haben am Bahnhof / Flughafen in einem netten Hilton übernachtet, und am 13.1. gings dann los. Rüber zum Flughafen, zur richtigen Halle, dort ein Blick auf die Abflugtafel … und da stimmt was nicht!

So 12.1.  we met in Frankfurt in the evening, all with our negative PCR tests brought along, then right on site we all did another quick test where you get the results after 15 minutes … and with that we met all the requirements for the voyage. We spent the night at a nice Hilton at the train station / airport, and on 13.1. off we went. The few meters to the airport, to the right hall, there one look at the table of departures … and something is not right there!

Naja, so um die zwei Stunden Verspätung, damit kann man ja leben. (Ihr erinnert Euch, unser letzter Abflug, der nach Vancouver, fand einen Tag zu spät statt – da wird man genügsam)

Oh well, around two hours of delay, that is something we can live with. (You remember, our last departure, the flight to Vancouver, took place one day too late – that makes you humble)

Wir haben also die üblichen Stationen durchlaufen bis wir an unserem Gate waren und haben dort dann mit Elefanten-Geduld gewartet bis unser Flug aufgerufen wurde.

So we went through the usual stations until we were at our gate and there we waited with the patience of an elephant until our flight was called.

Und dann um 12:20 hob das Flugzeug mit uns allen drin ab! Kaum hatten wir die Startbahn verlassen, waren wir auch schon durch die Wolken, die unheimlich niedrig hingen.

And then at about 12:20 pm the plane took off with all of us inside! We had hardly left the runway when we were already above the clouds which were incredibly low.

Der Flug war nicht spektakulär, zu sehen gabs entweder Wolken oder Meer … aber wir hatten einen netten Flieger und haben viele Filme geschaut.

The flight was not extraordinary, you could see either clouds or ocean … but we had a nice little plane and watched lots of movies.

Um kurz nach sechzehn Uhr Ortszeit haben wir dann Bridgetown auf Barbados erreicht.

Shortly after four in the afternoon local time we then reached Bridgetown on Barbados.

Dort sind wir vom Flugzeug auf Busse umgestiegen und wurden direkt zur AIDA perla gebracht.

There we changed from the plane to busses and were brought directly to the AIDA perla.

Wir haben unsere netten kleinen Kabinen bezogen …

We moved into our nice little cabins …

… und haben danach ein bisschen die obersten Decks erkundet. Und ja, da mag es auch Cocktails gegeben haben!

… and then explored the upper decks a bit. And yes, there cocktails may have been served!

Unser letzter Tag in Vancouver, der irgendwie zwei Themen hat: Regen und Corona …

Our last day in Vancouver, which somehow has two themes: rain and Corona …

Zu letzterem sind uns viele lustige Plakate aufgefallen … alle haben COVID-19 satt!

Regarding the latter, we noticed lots of funny posters … everybody has had it with COVID-19!

Wir sind dann mit dem Seabus rüber nach Nordvancouver, denn für mich ist das ein:

Und dann war es Zeit, zurück zum Hotel zu fahren, wo wir unser Gepäck gelagert hatten. Immerhin hat der Regen aufgehört …

And then it was time to get back to the hotel, where we had stored our luggage. At least the rain has stopped …

Wir haben auch ganz brav genug Abstand gehalten!

And we were good and kept enough of a distance!

Ähem … ja, ich weiß, ich hab gesagt, unsere Koffer sind im Hotel … sind sie auch … die alten. Aber wir haben doch auf Granville Island eingekauft … das passt jetzt in den neuen Koffer!

Ahem … yes, I know, I said that our suitcases are in the hotel … and that is where they are … the old ones. But we went shopping on Granville Island, remember … and that will now fit into this new suitcase!

Ja, das wars dann schon fast. Wir sind dann mit drei Koffern, einem Rucksack und einem Laptop zum Flughafen. Auch da fällt einem überall Corona ein: der Abflugplan ist schon deutlich leerer als in früheren Jahren!

Well, and that was almost it. We then traveled with three suitcases, a backpack and a laptop to the airport. There as well, you think of Corona automatically: the departures schedule is quite a bit shorter than in years past!

Auf Wiedersehen, Kanada!!! Es war wieder mal sehr, sehr schön, trotz Regen 🙂

Tja, wo sind wir da wohl wieder? In aller Herrgottsfrühe (und -kälte)?

Well, where might we be here once again? At the crack of dawn (and in the cold)?

Natürlich im Stanley Park, zu sehr früher Stunde, der Biber wegen. Auch wenn wir die leider nicht gesehen haben, dafür kam ein Waschbär den Weg entlang. Der war genauso erschrocken wie wir!

In Stanley Park, of course, at a very early hour, because of the beavers. And even if we did not see them, to make up for that, a raccoon came down the path. It was just as startled as we were!

Um sieben waren wir im Park und sind die dunklen Wege entlanggestolpert.

At seven we were in the park and then stumbled along the dark pathways.

Tja, Biber haben wir heute früh nicht gesehen (aber gehört!) … aber natürlich die üblichen Enten …

Well, we did not see any beavers this morning (though we did hear one!) … but of course the usual ducks …

… und auch einen Adler – mit Baumaterial?

… and also an eagle – with building material?

Irgendwann haben wir dann aufgegeben. Zwei Herren erzählten uns, dass sie an der „Seawall“ Otter gesehen hätten, also sind wir da hin. Ein schicker Sonnenaufgang!

Eventually we just gave up. Two gentlemen hat told us that they had seen otters at the seawall, so of course we went over there. A gorgeous sunrise!

Keine Biber auf dem Wasser, keine Otter … nur so ein Tier mit ganz langen Armen …

No beavers in the water, no otters … just a strange animal with very long arms …

Hab ich schon erwähnt, dass es kalt war? Sobald es hell war, sind wir in das Café von gestern, um uns ein bisschen aufzuwärmen.

Did I mention that it was pretty cold? As soon as it was light, we went back to the café from yesterday, to warm up a bit.

Dann wollten wir eigentlich zum Hotel und uns nochmal hinlegen … aber haben uns dagegen entschieden, es gibt so viel zu sehen. Zum Beispiel mal wieder ein paar Hochhäuser für Euch: Das Cardero, das 2021 einen Preis gewonnen hat.

Then we had originally been planning to go back to the hotel for a nap … but then we decided against that, there is so much to see. For example, once again, some skyscrapers for you: The Cardero, which won an award in 2021.

Oder hier das „Alberni“, ein geschwungener Turm, den der japanische Architekt Kengo Kuma entworfen hat.

Or here the „Alberni“, a curved tower which was designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Sieht unwirklich aus, nicht? Daran wird ja noch gebaut, aber dieses Gebäude hier unten steht schon länger in Vancouver: Das „Qube“ wurde 1969 gebaut!

Looks unreal, doesn’t it? Here the construction is still in progress, but this building below was erected a longer while ago: The Qube was built in 1969!

An einem Sockel in der Mitte sind die Stockwerke „aufgehängt“. Damit gilt diese Konstruktion als besonders erdbebensicher.

The stories are „hanging“ from a core in the middle. This construction is thought to be especially earthquake-resistant .

Und noch mehr Stahlseile, aber ganz woanders, denn jetzt sind wir wieder „motorisiert“, nämlich im Skytrain unterwegs.

And even more steel cables, but at a totally different spot, because now we are once again „motorized“, meaning, in the skytrain.

Zuerst gehts zum VanDusen Botanical Garden. Auf dem Weg dieser Blick: (Klar, der Vordergrund ist nicht sehr malerisch, aber es geht auch eher um den Hintergrund und den Himmel. Was für ein super Wetter endlich mal!!!)

First we are on our way to the VanDusen Botanical Garden. And on the way there this view: (Sure, the foreground is not all that picturesque, but the important things are the background and the sky. What a spectacular weather for a change!!!)

Im Park lässt es sich bei diesem Wetter sehr gut aushalten.

Inside the park it is very enjoyable with this weather.

Es gab mehr und mehr Sonnenschein.

There was more and more sunshine.

Hier hab ich die Jacke noch zu, aber bald wurde es dafür zu warm! – Man beachte, wie gut die Haare zum Herbstlaub passen. Darauf wurde ich tatsächlich zweimal angesprochen!

Here I have my jacket still zipped up, but soon it got too warm for that! – You do notice, how well my hair compliments the fall foliage. Twice actually, people approached me because of that!

Weiter gehts: Im Rosengarten gibt es eine Sonnenuhr …

On we go: In the rose garden there is a sundial …

Wir haben da eine ganze Weile zugeschaut, diese Beeren im Strauch sind wohl superlecker! Und dann haben wir gesehen, weshalb wir vor allem hier waren: Kolibris.

We watched here for quite a while, it seems that these berries on the bush are scrumptious! And then we saw wthe main reason why we had come here: hummingbirds.

Und ich glaube, der hat gemerkt, dass wir da waren – und vor allem die Kamera. Trommelwirbel: Die Titanic-Position!

And I think it noticed that we were there – and especially the camera. Drum roll: The Titanic posture!

Diese Grundammer ist anderweitig beschäftigt. Ach so, Carl von Linné hätte wohl von einer Pipilo maculatus gesprochen.

This spotted towhee is busy with other things. Oh, sorry, Carl von Linné would have spoken of a pipilo maculatus.

Wir sind dann nochmal zum nahegelegenen Queen Elizabeth Park gegangen. Ihr erinnert Euch, da waren wir vor drei Tagen im strömenden Regen.

We then went once more to the Queen Elizabeth Park nearby. You remember, we had been there three days ago, in a downpour.

Heute sieht das alles ganz anders aus.

Today things look quite different.

Nach einem kurzen Blick sind wir wieder weiter und haben auf dem Weg zum Skytrain diese Burschen entdeckt.

After a quick peek we walked on and spotted theses guys on the way back to the skytrain.

Diese interessanten Gestalten hier haben wir dann schon an unserem nächsten Ziel gesehen:

When we discovered these interesting fellows, we were already at our next destination:

Hier gibt es immer viel zu sehen, zu essen und zu kaufen. … Wir wussten, es wird gefährlich, wenn wir in dieses eine Geschäft gehen … „Dragonspace“.

Here there is always lots to see, to eat and to buy. … We knew it would be terribly tempting when we enter this one shop … „Dragonspace“.

Aber wir haben alle Bedenken fortgespült. (und ja, es mag sein, dass wir ein bisschen eingekauft haben, auch wenn die Koffer eigentlich schon voll sind …)

But we simply flushed all concerns. (and yes, it might just be that we did buy some stuff, even though the suitcases were rather full already …)

Reden wir von etwas anderem: In der Nähe ist ein Fußgängertunnel, in dem wir letztes Mal schon schöne Graffiti entdeckt hatten. Auch da haben wir heute nochmal nachgesehen.

Let us talk of other things: Nearby there is a pedestrian tunnel, where last time already we spotted pretty graffiti. So we checked things out here as well.

Wir sind dann kurz zurück zum Hotel. Torben hat sich danach um Verpflegung gekümmert, ich mich um die wirklich wichtigen Sachen 🙂 Das bedeutet: ich bin nochmal in den Stanley Park, in der Hoffnung, nochmal einen Biber zu sehen. Eine Stunde lang stand ich da und habe gewartet … und gewartet … und gewartet. Dann wollte ich aufgeben als ein Herr kam und mich ansprach, wir haben eine ganze Weile über Biber geredet, und da kam er dann auch vorbeigeschwommen.

We then went back to the hotel for a bit. Next Torben took care of some food, while I took care of the really important stuff 🙂 Meaning, I went to Stanley Park once more, hoping that I would see a beaver one more time. For one hour I stood there and waited … and waited … and waited. Then I was ready to give up when a gentlemen came over and talked to me, for quite a while we chatted about beavers, and then it did actually swim past.

Tja, so haben wir am letzten ganzen Tag in Vancouver nochmal eine Menge Punkte abgeklappert, die uns letztes Mal so viel Spaß gemacht hatten … Und morgen gehts wieder nach Hause! Das fühlt sich schon sehr nach Abschied an …

Well, so we ticked off a lot of spots here in Vancouver all day, spots where we had had lots of fun last time … And tomorrow we will fly back home! It already feels very much like a farewell …

Das trockene Wetter sorgt doch gleich für gute Laune!

The dry weather lifts the mood no end!

Wir wollen heute zum Stanley Park, und da es ja mal nicht regnet, sind wir den meisten Weg gelaufen.

Today we want to visit Stanley Park, and since it is not raining for a change, we walked most of the way.

Downtown gibt es ja eine Menge spannende Wolkenkratzer zu sehen (der, an dem die Fenster geputzt werden, ist eher langweilig …). Dies hier ist das „Marine Building“, das aufgrund des Art-déco-Baustils als Sehenswürdigkeit gilt. Vielleicht sehen wir uns das beim nächsten Besuch auch mal von innen an …

Downtown there are a lot of interesting skyscrapers to see (the one where they are cleaning the windows is a rather boring one …). This one here is the „marine building“, which because of its art-déco architecture counts as a historic landmark. Maybe next time we come here, we will also take a look at the inside …

Nach seiner Fertigstellung im Oktober 1930 war dies für 9 Jahre das höchste Gebäude der Stadt. Und kostenintensiv war es! 1,1 Millionen Dollar teurer als geplant.

After its completion in October 1930 this had been the highest building in the city for 9 years. And it was terribly expensive! It was $1,1 million over budget.

Aber wir haben nicht die Zeit, hier bei den Gebäuden rumzuhängen oder oben drauf zu liegen …

But we do not have the time to hang out here near the buildings or even lie on top of one …

Wir sind beim Convention Center in Canada Place losgelaufen und immer am Wasser entlang.

We started our walk at the Convention Center in Canada Place and then always along the shore.

Und was wir da entdeckt haben, waren eine Menge interessanter Infotafeln. Man kann nachlesen über eine Explosion im Hafen, über Holzfäller oder auch wie den Lachsen über eine blockierte Stelle am Fluss hinweg geholfen wurde. Oder über die „Champagner-Safari“: „Viele haben versucht, das Peace River Land im Nordwesten von B.C. zu erforschen und vermessen, eine wilde Gegend, größer als Deutschland. Niemand war dabei so spektakulär erfolglos wie die Bedaux Expedition von 1934.“

And what we discovered there, was a lot of interesting information tablets. You can read about an explosion in the harbour, about wood cutters or also about how the salmon were helped across a blocked part of a river. Or about the „champagne safari“: „Many have attempted to explore and survey the Peace River country in northeastern B.C., a wilderness larger than Germany. None proved as spectacularly unsuccessful as the Bedaux Expedition of 1934.“

Wir wollen nicht aufgeben, auch wenn das Wetter nicht sehr vielversprechend aussieht.

Man möchte ja fast meinen, dass diese knalligen Farben nicht echt sein können. Wie angemalt wirken die Blätter teilweise:

One might think that these gaudy colours cannot be real. The leaves sometimes look as if they have been painted:

Gliederfüßer sind zu sehen, ob als Krabben im Wasser …

Arthropods can be seen, whether as crabs in the water …

… oder als Spinnen an Land.

… or as spiders on land.

Aber wir schauen uns schon wieder viel zu viele Dinge an und kommen nicht vom Fleck. Dabei wird man hungrig, und kühl ist es außerdem, also machen wir einen Zwischenstopp im Café Villaggio. Davor gibt es spannende Steinplatten zu sehen. Nur leider haben wir keine Erklärung dafür gefunden, was sie bedeuten.

But we are once again looking at too many things and thus are not getting anywhere. Doing that, you get hungry, and on top of that it is also rather cool, so we take a break at the Café Villaggio. In front of it they have interesting flagstones. But unfortunately we found no further information about what they mean.

So, lecker wars!

Weiter gehts, und dann sind wir endlich am Ziel: Stanley Park. Hier haben wir bei unserem letzten Vancouver-Aufenthalt schon viel Zeit verbracht. Der Park ist riesig und hat so viel zu bieten …

On we go, and then we finally reach our destination: Stanley Park. Here we spent a lot of time already during our last stay in Vancouver. The park is huge and has so much to offer …

Wegen Corona können wir vieles, was wir vorhatten, nicht machen. Hoch zum Lookout im Harbour Centre zum Beispiel darf man aktuell nicht. Aber in den Park, dachten wir, darf man auf jeden Fall. Doch dann hatten wir gelesen, dass da gerade vor Kojoten gewarnt wird!

Because of Corona we are unable to do a lot of the things we had planned. You are for example currently not allowed to go up to the Lookout in the Harbour Centre. But we thought, we will definitely be allowed into the park. But then we had read that there is a warning out about coyotes!

Wir haben dann gelernt, dass es schon ewig Kojoten im Park gibt, nur kriegt man die normalerweise gar nicht zu sehen. Doch irgendjemand war wohl so schlau, sie zu füttern … und jetzt erwarten sie eben etwas zu fressen und gehen auf die Leute los.

We then learned that coyotes have been living in the park for ages, but you normally never get to see them. But it seems that somebody was so very smart to feed them … and now of course they expect food and attack people.

Wir haben uns schöne Dahlien angesehen. Nur leider ist alles sehr nass.

We then looked at pretty dahlias. Unfortunately everything is very wet.

Aber oben in den Bäumen lässt es sich aushalten …

But up in the trees it is not that bad …

Oder aber man geht gleich ins Wasser. Mit der richtigen Ausstattung ist das kein Problem.

Or you might as well choose the water. With the right equipment, that is not a problem.

Ein Brautenten-Männchen zeigt sich hier in all seiner Pracht. Wobei das Weibchen durchaus auch schön ist, wenn auch etwas zurückhaltender …

A male wood duck here shows itself in all its glory. But then, the female is also quite pretty, if a bit more low-key …

Wir sind hier am Beaver Lake, wo wir letztes Mal das Glück hatten, frühmorgens Biber zu sehen. Jetzt ist es kurz nach Mittag, also ganz klar die falsche Tageszeit, um sie zu entdecken.

We are at the Beaver Lake here, where last time we were lucky enough to see beavers in the early morning. Right now it is just past noon, so clearly the wrong time to spot them.

Aber es gibt auch so viel zu beobachten. Was will das Eichhörnchen mit den Kieseln? On line habe ich einen langen Eintrag gefunden, dass dieses Verhalten schon öfter beobachtet wurde. Aber man weiß wohl nicht wirklich den Grund dafür …

But there is also much else to observe. What for is the squirrel collecting pebbles? On line I found a long article stating that this behaviour has been watched several times already. But it seems nobody knows the reason for it …

Naja. Wir gehen jetzt mal wieder ins Aquarium.

Oh well, we will now once again visit the aquarium.

Wir haben uns wieder viele Fische angesehen und sind auch wieder in die Ausstellung „Amazonas“.

We once again looked at many fish, and also once again went into the „Amazon“ exhibition.

Neben Faultieren gibt es dort auch viele Frösche zu sehen, hier ein blauer „Färberfrosch“.

Next to sloths there are also many frogs to see, here a blue „dyeing poison frog“.

Oder auch Schlangen: Eine Langnasen-Strauchnatter. Spannend: diese Schlangenart hat die Giftzähne hinten im Kiefer.

Or snakes: Here a baron’s green racer. Interesting: this snake species has the poisonous fangs at the back of its mouth.

Und hier dann eine Große Anakonda, eine der größten Schlangen der Welt. Hinter diesem hübschen Köpfchen kommt noch eine Menge Körper …

Ihr habt es geahnt, das ist die Gelegenheit, auch mal wieder eine Spinne unterzubringen. Eine wunderschöne Weißknievogelspinne.

You guessed it, this is the perfect opportunity to once again insert a spider picture. A gorgeous whiteknee tarantula.

Als nächstes sind wir zu den Fledermäusen. Da war es naturgemäß sehr dunkel, nicht die besten Voraussetzungen für gute Fotos.

Next we went to the bats. Of course there it was rather dark, not the best conditions for good photos.

Wir sind dann nach draußen zu weiteren „alten Bekannten“, den Seeottern.

We then went outside to more „old acquaintances“, the sea otters.

Letztes Mal hatten wir eine „Tier-Begegnung“ gebucht, da durften wir sie füttern. Aber heute leider nicht. Tut uns ja leid!

Last time we had booked an „animal encounter“, where we had been allowed to feed them. But not today. Sorry!

Eigentlich hatte ich vorgehabt, dieses Mal den Besuch bei den Pinguinen zu buchen, aber wegen Corona ist das aktuell nicht möglich. Und jetzt ist es fünf, das Aquarium macht für heute zu und wir gehen zurück zum Bibersee.

Originally I had been planning to book the encounter with penguins this time, but because of Corona that is currently not possible. And now it is five, the aquarium is closing for the day, and we go back to the Beaver Lake.

And then we stood there, like this heron. We did see lots of birds: ducks, sparrows and also nicely a Cooper’s hawk.

Um 18:10 haben wir dann beschlossen: Wir warten noch zehn Minuten, ob ein Biber vorbeikommt, dann gehen wir. Es wird auch schon wieder zu dunkel …

At 6:10 pm then we decided: We will wait for another ten minutes, whether a beaver drops by, then we will leave. It is also once again getting too dark …

Das war dann wohl sein Stichwort 🙂 Zwar ist er nur von uns weg geschwommen, aber wir waren trotzdem begeistert. Ein schöner Abschluss für diesen Tag!

So, unsere treuen Leser kennen sie schon: Kennengelernt haben wir Jen und Rob 2018 auf Hawaii, dann haben wir uns in Lissabon getroffen, und jetzt sind sie zu uns ins Hotel gekommen – hier sitzen wir alle auf ihrem Bett 🙂 Ja, auf ihrem Bett, sie verbringen die Nacht im selben Hotel, damit wir abends keinen Zeitdruck haben, durchaus ein Glas Wein oder Whisky oder was auch immer trinken können, und damit wir dann morgen früh noch gemütlich zusammen frühstücken können.

Well, our faithful readers already know them: We first got to know Jen and Rob 2018 on Hawaii, then we met in Lisbon, and now they came to our hotel – here we are all sitting on their bed 🙂 Yes, on their bed, they will spend the night in the same hotel, so that we have no time pressure this evening, can drink a glass of wine or whisky or whatever else, and so that we can then tomorrow morning have a nice unhurried breakfast together as well.

Erst mussten wir natürlich stundenlang reden … So dass wir dann fast spät dran waren fürs Essen. Wir hatten bei einem Restaurant der Kette „The Keg Steakhouse“ reserviert. Und wir haben so lecker gegessen!!!

First of all we had to talk for hours … So much so that then we were almost late for our dinner. We had reserved a table at a restaurant of the „The Keg Steakhouse“ chain. And the food was so yummy!!!

Thanks for the treat!!! And afterwards we went to Gastown for a bit.

Ja, das erste Foto sieht nicht sehr tropisch aus, nicht wahr?

Well, the first photo does not look all that tropical, right?

Wo sind wir wohl? Nun, gegenüber vom Bloedel Conservatory. Das ist inmitten des Queen Elizabeth Parks in Vancouver. Und wer schon lange unseren Blog liest und sich außerdem alles merkt, der weiß, dass wir am 15. März 2018 schon mal hier waren, kurz vor fünf, um dann zu erfahren, dass hier um fünf die Türen geschlossen werden.

Where might we be? Well, across from the Bloedel Conservatory. Which is situated in the middle of the Queen Elizabeth Park right in Vancouver. And those who have been following our blog for a while and who on top of that also remember everything we write, will know that we have been here before, March 15, 2018, just before 5 pm, only to discover that the doors get locked at five.

Also haben wir dieses Mal alles anders und besser gemacht: Wir haben vorab gebucht, was in Corona-Zeiten unerlässlich ist. Und wir haben morgens den ersten Slot genommen, damit hoffentlich nicht viel los ist.

So this time we did it all differently and much better: We booked ahead of time, which is a must anyhow in Corona times. And we took the first available slot in the morning, hoping that then not so many people would be around.

Das bedeutet aber auch, dass man bei Regen vor verschlossener Tür steht, wo es keine Möglichkeit zum Unterstellen gibt. – Nur bei den Toiletten ist das anders …

But that also means that when it rains, you are left standing in front of the locked doors, where there is no possibility to take shelter. – Unless you count the toilets …

Da wir ja brav früh dran waren, falls ein Skytrain ausfällt oder was auch immer, waren wir a) viel zu früh dran um 9:20 (aufgemacht wird um zehn) und b) außerdem durch den Weg von der Haltestelle bis zum Park und dann bis zum Gewächshaus rundum durchnässt.

Since we had left early, just in case a skytrain might be canceled or whatever, we were a) much too early at 9:20 am (they open at ten) and b) on top of that, after our walk from the train stop to the park and then all the way to the conservatory, wet through and through.

Gut, dass es innen immerhin wärmer ist. Aber die nassen Jacken schleppt man ja trotzdem mit sich herum … Es gibt natürlich jede Menge tolle Pflanzen zu sehen.

Good thing that inside at least it is a bit warmer. But nonetheless you still lug around your wet jackets … Of course there are a lot of magnificent plants to be seen.

Und außerdem jede Menge Vögel. Hier zum Beispiel ein Goldfasan, sehr farbenfroh!

And on top of that you see loads of birds. Here for example a golden pheasant, very colourful!

Und Kois gibt es auch. Übrigens: Der hellorange, das ist „Dragon Gate“, Vancouvers ältester Koi, immerhin 35 Jahre alt. Er hat ursprünglich im Dr. Sun Yet-Sen Garten gelebt. Doch nachdem er zwei Angriffe von Flussottern überlebt hatte, wurde er im Oktober 2020 hierhin umgesiedelt.

And they have kois as well. By the way: The light orange one, that is „Dragon Gate“, Vancouver’s oldest koi, with an age of 35 years. Originally it lived in the Dr. Sun Yet-Sen garden. But after he had survived two attacks by river otters, he was relocated here in October 2020.

So riesig viel Zeit zum Schauen ist aber nicht … man darf nur eine Stunde im Gewächshaus bleiben. Es ist zwar nicht so riesig groß, aber viel Zeit sind die 60 Minuten trotzdem nicht, um alles zu sehen. Fleischfressende Pflanzen wie diese Kannenpflanze …

But we do not have all that much time for looking around … you are only allowed one hour inside the conservatory. It is not all that big, but 60 minutes is still not very much to discover all that there is to see. Carnivorous plants like this pitcher plant …

… Orchideen …

… orchids …

… und immer wieder Vögel. Die können frei herumfliegen und setzen sich hin, wo es ihnen passt, zum Beispiel auf Banklehnen, wie dieser australische Königspapagei.

… and lots and lots of birds. Those can fly around freely and sit down wherever they like, for example on the backs of benches, like this Australian king parrot.

Sie haben aber auch ihre eigenen Ruheplätze, wo man sie nicht stören kann, außer durch Blicke – und die beiden hier schauen schon, als hätten sie genug von all den Paparazzi …

But they also have their own resting places where people cannot bother them, except by staring – and those two here are really looking as if they have enough of all the paparazzi …

Dieser Gelbbrustara aber, genannt Art, lässt sich bei der Federpflege überhaupt nicht stören …

This blue-and-gold macaw though, called Art, is not bothered and keeps on grooming its feathers …

Das hier sieht auch fast nach Federn aus: ein rosa Puderquastenstrauch. Was für ein Name!

This here also looks a bit like feathers: a powder puff plant. What a name!

Übrigens, es gibt nicht nur Vögel und Fische, sondern auch jede Menge kleiner Vierbeiner.

By the way, they do not only have birds and fish, but also loads of little quadrupeds.

Zurück zu den Vögeln. Man hat schon den Eindruck, dass Mali, ein Gelbhaubenkakadu, weiß, wie schön sie ist. Sie ist schon über 30!

Back to the birds. You do get the impression that Mali, asulphur-crested cockatoo, knows how pretty she is. She is older than 30 years!

Dieser Vogel hier müsste eine „Dominikanerwitwe“ sein – wer denkt sich eigentlich diese Namen aus??? Im „Prachtkleid“ trägt das Männchen noch vier sehr, sehr lange Schwanzfedern.

This bird here should be a „pin-tailed whydah“ – who ever comes up with all these names??? With its breeding outfit, the male also wears four terribly long tail feathers.

Und hier guckt ganz ernst der „Schönbürzel“!

And here, with the severe look, that is a „lavender waxbill“!

Etwas größer: ein Zwergara mit dem Namen Nelson.

A bit larger: a hahn’s dwarf macaw, with the name of Nelson.

Die kleineren Vögel hat man manchmal nicht gleich entdeckt, wenn sie nicht gerade an den Futterstellen unterwegs waren. Hier seht Ihr einen Reisfinken.

The smaller birds you sometimes didn’t discover right away, unless they were sitting in the feeding areas. Here you can see a Java finch.

Und oben auf dem Dach sind zwei Zebrafinken.

And up on the roof there are two zebra finches.

Das war nur eine kleine Auswahl, es gibt so viel mehr zu sehen. Aber erstens wollen wir Euch nicht ermüden, und zweitens haben wir in der kurzen Stunde auch gar nicht alles entdeckt. Also am besten selber mal hingehen und sich alles ansehen.

That was only a small selection, there is so much more to see. But first of all we do not want to tire you, and then we also did not discover everything ourselves, in that one short hour. So the best thing is: go there yourselves and check it all out.

Benannt ist das Bloedel Conservatory übrigens nach Prentice Bloedel, und eröffnet wurde es am 6. Dezember 1969. Noch ein farbenfroher Abschiedsgruß und …

… zurück in den Regen. Auch hier draußen hätte es schöne Farben gegeben, die Bäume in ihren Herbstkleidern. Aber das Wetter lädt nicht zum Verweilen ein. Auch wenn wir uns im Gewächshaus einen (kleinen) Schirm gekauft haben.

… back into the rain. Here as well, there would have been nice colours, all the trees in their fall garb. But this weather is just not very inviting. Even if we did buy a (small) umbrella in the conservatory.

Da kann man nur fliehen! Ab zurück zum Skytrain und dann zum Hotel.

All one can do is just run! Back to the skytrain and then to the hotel.

Dort haben wir uns umgezogen und sind dann einkaufen. Regenjacken, trockene und warme Oberteile (Torben hat da schon was neues an), ein größerer Schirm … die Gummistiefel waren uns dann doch zu teuer, dafür dass sie auch noch hässlich waren …

There we changed and then went shopping. We got rain jackets, dry and warm tops (Torben is already wearing something new here), a larger umbrella … the rubber boots were just too expensive, considering that they were also terribly ugly …

Und zum Abschluss gönnen wir uns noch bei „Trees“, wo es angeblich den besten Cheesecake von ganz Vancouver gibt, etwas Leckeres.

And to finish the day, we treat ourselves to something tasty at „Trees“ where supposedly you get the best cheesecake in all of Vancouver.

Heute verlassen wir Victoria … sehr früh morgens, also war nicht mal Zeit für das übliche tolle Frühstück. Aber wir haben eine reichlich gefüllte Verpflegungsbox gekriegt!

Today we leave Victoria … bright and early, so there was not even time for the usual grand breakfast. But we received a very well filled snack box!

Dazu müssen wir natürlich wieder die Fähre nehmen.

For that we have to take another ferry, of course.

Und wir hatten das wohlüberlegt geplant: Von Victoria rüber nach Tsawwassen, das ist eine Strecke an ganz vielen kleinen Inseln vorbei. Wir dachten, da gibt es bestimmt eine Menge zu sehen.

And we had put much thought into our planning: From Victoria towards Tsawwassen, that is a route that passes a lot of little islands. We were sure there would be lots to see on the way.

Tja … aber wenn es so regnerisch und grau ist …

Well … but in such rainy and dull weather …

Hier und da waren wir mal wirklich ganz nah an einer der Inseln, da wurde dann klar, dass es schon schöne Ausblicke gegeben hätte …

Here and there we got really close to one of the islands, and then it became clear that, yes, there would have been nice views …

Aber in dem Grau … Naja. Ich war natürlich trotzdem die meiste Zeit an Deck. Und ich hab sogar zwei Weißkopfseeadler nebeneinander entdeckt … weit weg und in der trüben Luft nicht wirklich toll zu erkennen:

But in all that grey … Oh well. Of course I was on deck most of the time, nonetheless. And I even spotted two bald eagles sitting next to each other … far away and in that hazy air, you do not really see them all that clearly:

Und dann mussten wir schon wieder ins Auto, runter von der Fähre und ab auf die Straße.

And then we already had to get back into the car, off the ferry and onto the road.

Prinzipiell waren wir ja ganz begeistert, was sich für Fahrradfahrer in Vancouver alles getan hat. Mit klaren Radwegen, vielen Leihrädern und Fahrradständern. Aber hier sollen wirklich die Radler neben den rasenden Autos existieren?

In principle, we had been excited to see how much has improved for cyclists in Vancouver. With designated cycle tracks, lots of rental bikes and bicycle racks. But here, really? The cyclists shall exist next to the speeding cars?

Wir sind auf jeden Fall nach Downtown gefahren.

In any case, we drove downtown.

Da haben wir unser Gepäck im Hotel abgegeben und sind dann gleich wieder Richtung Flughafen zurückgefahren.

There we dropped our luggage off at the hotel and then drove right back towards the airport.

Da haben wir unseren Leihwagen abgegeben und haben einen Abflug gemacht.

There we dropped off our rental car and then took off.

Mit dem Skytrain, der mittlerweile sehr praktisch bis zum Flughafen fährt.

With the sky train which by now, very handily, runs all the way to the airport.

Das wars für heute, draußen ist eh nur Regen, Regen, Regen …
